I am impressed and I shall return! They have something that is hard to find these days - a classic burger! If a person wants one with cheese, they just need to order the The Pennsport Burger. This makes it fair for us lactose intolerant people, because we are not having to pay $16 for a burger that has cheese we cannot eat. Instead, we order a classic burger for $13 and it is quite good! Most places in philly have tried to get me to pay for the burger with cheese price and they become angry when I say "No thank you, I will not pay for cheese that I'm not going to eat, so I will refrain from ordering". Then I walk out. Some of them offer to refrain from adding the cheese, but they still want me to pay for the cheese. Outrageous. Anyhow, Moonshine has a new fan because they are not unethical. Great lil classic south Philly pub with some decent food and good prices. They have some classic bar food and also entrees. Decent beer list and also some great cocktail options to try, which are so awesomely priced you definitely should try! Quizzo on Tuesdays is a fun crowd and quite challenging. Had the signature Pennsport Burger which was amazing - perfectly grilled. Generous serving of tots too. Orange creamsicle cocktail was also just great as a sweet treat in the summer. We come here entirely too much. It's a great neighborhood bar that has live music and always has whatever Philadelphia sports game is playing on. They also do Quizzo and comedy nights so fun. I always get buffalo wings and loaded tater tots. Buffalo cauliflower when they have it is really good. Tomato soup and grilled cheese or hummus plate are good options too. Great little bar! Walk in your greeted with the bar and this night there was live music playing. Continue past the bar into a small dining room which leads to another dining room. Awesome service, super friendly and fun. This night we just hit the place for drinks and apps. Large beer list, and a lot of moonshine infused cocktails. The moonshine orangesickle was amazing. Good food. Recommend off the specials we got fish tacos and tortilla chicken soup. Fish tacos were great. Also got some fries and they were HOT. and delicious. Tortilla soup was not hit though. Barely warm don't know what happened. But it was really good so I ate it super fast. I also got the manhattan jack Daniel's special. I was warned they don't make good manhattans and that was quite true. To me it tasted like a dirty sock and watered down. lol but once I drank half of it the liquor kicked in and I stopped caring so much. But I normally make it at home with an American rye whiskey like bulleit and sweet red vermouth and bitters, which I was not getting notes of vermouth at all in this manhattan and whiskey wasn't strong. One of my to go place for drinks and brunch previously but recently has been one of my favorite place to go for spring, summer and early fall because they are dog friendly outside. Might be too cold for late fall and winter for outdoor. Drinks are always delicious and strong -- I've had just classic amaretto sour, margaritas and mimosa to their menu drinks item the blackberry lemonade, watermelon margarita and state of mine. The food hasn't disappointed me yet. I've had the chicken & waffle, burgers, the omelette and probably more things that I can't remember but everything has been good and reasonably priced. I've always mostly good service as well. When I have my dog, we are offered water which is never necessary but awesome. Will be back soon. read more

Been here a few times and disappointed each time I want to love this place but i just can't. Service is ok and the location is awesome. But the food and drink has been consistently terrible. Once ordered Meatloaf Au Poivre... which seemed like a great idea. And while the sauce and meatloaf where probably really good - whomever prepared it took the pepper part of the recipe way to far... the entire plate was covered in whole, uncooked black peppercorns making it inedible :( I wasn't sure if it was a joke or not. Again it's in a great spot so I've been back - but each time I've ordered something it's been tough to finish. I'm not a picky eater and have brought other folks who say the same. Started with a couple of Cocktails - they had me at $5 Bloody Mary's- and an Orange Mooncicle (highly recommended!) Brunch was Chicken & waffles and a chicken Sammie. Both cooked to perfection. Ample portions & a nice honey glaze on the chicken. The star of the day was the staff. All were kind, accommodating, and knowledgeable. What an eclectic crowd this place draws most unusual as I looked around, no matter I was there for a late lunch. I was quite satisfied with the burger I ordered, it was slightly overcooked but tasted alright. Others in our party remarked that while their food was just okay it wasn't quite what it use to be and felt the place had slipped a bit. Still another wasn't satisfied at all with the avocado, tomato grilled cheese sandwich and I had to agree. The bread was barely warm, cheese wasn't melted, the center was stone cold, it never should have left the kitchen like that. The apps on the other hand were good, fried calamari with an Asian dipping sauce and the loaded fries were a hit. They have a nice selection of drinks but unfortunately some come in very small servings for the cost especially the wine and Tennessee wildfire. The blackberry lemonade was great though and a decent amount! As for food, I've only tried to sweet potato fries and they were good, also in a good sized portion. My dining partner got the Brussels sprouts and she thought they were delicious. They have heat lamps so we sat outside in a very nice patio! Fun neighborhood bar and grill! Came here for some St. Paddy's day action and it was a fun vibe. The place is intermixed with residential buildings but the signage is clear so you can't miss it. We found street parking not too far and walked over. Outside I noticed they had their outdoor seating prepped, and some heat lamps (that were off when we arrived). Looks like it would be a fun place for some outdoor nomming and people watching in better weather. Inside it's a Irish pub atmosphere - which was a perfect place to be for St. Paddy's day. There was some live music being played, and a decent crowd. It wasn't too packed or too empty, so ambiance was comfortable. We sat at the bar and ordered a round of spicy Bloody Mary's (yes spicy), and a hummus platter. The server was very generous with the vodka in the Marys and the hummus was perfectly shareable for two! Overall, great service - quick and casual. This place was recommended by a friend for brunch and it definitely looks like it can serve it up. My husband and I decided to try this place based on all the wonderful reviews! We made a reservation for 7pm in a Saturday. They have a cute outdoor dining area set up in front. They also have a few reserved parking spots in the lot adjacent to the restaurant which is really nice! Especially considering the subway doesn't stop near this area. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. They had $5 Bloody Mary specials so I had one. It was ok, a little spicy, but it was solid. The food menu has a lot of choices. I was kind of hoping for something a bit light, without ordering a salad, and that was a challenge since everything on the menu is pretty much comfort food. I decided on the short rib dip, and my husband had the short rib dinner with Mac and cheese. Our food came out quickly! My short rib sandwich was really good! The fries were crispy, but lacked seasoning. My husband's short rib was good, but the Mac and cheese was horrible! It tasted like it had been grilled. It tasted charred and burnt-Smokey, not like they used smoked cheese or something, but like they had somehow put it on a grill and burned the life out it. So, unfortunately his Mac and cheese went to waste. Overall, we had a nice time. The food was ok, not amazing, but ok. The service was good and friendly. Found this cute neighboor place while I was out shopping. At the beginning our service wasn't the greatest and we almost got up to go but decided to stay based on the reviews we read about the food. It took a while for someone to come out to our table and it was clean. Once the waitress came out we made sure to put in all our orders at once so we wouldn't have to wait again for her to come out .... We sat there for a pretty long time and the place was empty. We order a bunch of appetizer and they were all good. Entree was ok. Asiago chicken with risotto. Recently dined here on a Fri night after getting multiple gift cards for them from an event. I had never heard of Moonshine nor been the Pennsport area before, but decided this was a great opportunity to check it out. Getting the table was a breeze during prime weekend hours and service was extraordinarily nice! The food is the reason I'm giving it only 3 stars though. The food was SO salty. We ordered the French onion soup (tasted great but too salty), their flagship blackened chicken on pesto gnocchi (again would be much better with less salt), cheeseburger with added cheddar and avocado (meat wasn't good at all and fries were too salty), and the surf and turf comprised of steak and shrimp (steak tasted cheap, shrimp good, potatoes were OK). We came here on a whim for dinner one night. We asked to sit outside and they kind of placed us all the way in the back where we were kind of forgotten about. To start we got the lunar sangria and fried pickles. They were both delicious. For dinner I got the chicken piccata ravioli. It was very flavorful but the ravioli were a little under cooked. Would recommend pulling the shells though! 5Rice Bowl/ Brown Rice, shredded carrots, mushrooms, broccoli, poblano peppers, scallions, sesame seeds, and sweet soy sauce: Highly recommend as a vegetarian option but you can add protein if you like! The sweet soy sauce was distinct but delicious. 3BYO Burger/ Lettuce, Tomato, and American cheese with fries: Ground beef was a little gritty and flavorless. Nothing really special about the burger. My girlfriend and I checked out Moonshine over the weekend after we realized we had set out too late to go to nearby The Dutch despite still being in the mood for brunch. Moonshine, even with a full specials page of its menu, wasn't doing much in that line, but we were pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed what we ordered, all the same. There were a good few things that caught my eye on the menu, but I was pretty hungry by this point so I kept it simple and hearty with "The Pennsport Burger"; my gf ordered a mild version of the (no longer-)blackened chicken/gnocchi dish. Drinks wise, I started with one of the $5 special Bloody Mary's (one of the only concessions to brunch), followed by a draft beer. The food was strong in both cases; my gf wasn't really in the mood for lunch/dinner fair when she ordered, but the kitchen nailed her dish with vibrant, flavorful pesto and satisfying, pillowy gnocchi. I tried it myself and would love to order the dish sometime with the blackened seasoning intact. My burger was also good stuff; I don't know if it was quite medium rare, which is what I had requested when asked, but it was juicy and its toppings made it distinct from your standard bar burger - it has to earn its claim to being the neighborhood's burger, after all. It does so with mozzarella, tomato jam, prosciutto, basil aioli, and caramelized onions. To be honest, I didn't notice the prosciutto much, visibly or in the flavor mix; but each bite of the burger was loaded with flavor, so it's possible the prosciutto just hid in the background, taste-wise. Everything else on there was fully assertive and added nicely to the burger itself, complimenting the beef patty and making it feel different, but not in any overwhelming way that made me forget I was eating a hamburger. It came with tots (I could have had regular or sweet potato fries, alternatively), which were very crisp on the outside and light inside. Beyond that, the Bloody Mary was fine, though nothing to write home about (hence I switched to a beer to finish out the meal); but then again, it was $5 and only the second Bloody Mary I think I've had in the past year, so I wasn't complaining. We went during lunch on a sunny, warm Saturday, so I was fine with being told that because we didn't have a reservation we could only get the isolated high-top near the hostess' station...but I did find it a bit odd that the rest of the outdoor seats never really filled in to the extent that we couldn't have gotten a more normal seat (granted, there could have been cancelations and they may not have been seating the last stretch of tables along the restaurant's side, but it still seemed unnecessary for us to get relegated to last-ditch table). All the same, we liked it enough that it's safe to say we'll go back again - especially because the food was the highlight and we generally enjoyed ourselves. read more
