Went for lunch on a Saturday, was sat quickly and greeted by a server relatively fast. The watermelon and cucumber salad was very refreshing, the only thing I would mention is that there was a tad bit too much dressing sonfelt very oily while eating. The lobster ravioli was 50/50 for me personally, while the lobster was cooked well and the sauce flavorful, the only lobster was what was topped on the ravioli and not actually stuffed in with the cheese like I was expecting. It was still good, just not as "lobster ravioli" as Im used to. The pizza is a very thin crust but they did a wonderful job of not burning the crust despite this. Upscale Atmosphere, Chill Vibe. I went here to try the thin crust tavern style pizza. Walking in it is a clean, fun, and well decorated place with low light. The open kitchen balances the vibes making it seem lively and open. The server was friendly and we were seated quickly, I ordered the cheese + cheese and my partner the watermelon and feta salad. Both were fresh and delicious, the pizza was nice and crisp as expected with high quality ingredients, as was the salad. I also enjoyed a fun mixed drink prepared at the bar which was great. To finish off the dinner we had the watermelon sorbet, complimented with a rosemary sugar cookie. It was an interesting and delicious combination! Second was roasted beets which were paired with an ingredient I couldn't figure out and was not to my taste and beef tartare which was ok, but far from the best I've had. It is sandwiched in-between a few other restaurants and with little signage, I had to look around a little to see where the front door was. Inside there is an expansive bar along with 2 smaller bar areas in front of a large dining room on the side. Lots of dark wood interior and a nice decor. Some booths and tables inside, and a few tables outside. Their Happy Hour takes place during the weekdays at both the inside bar and outside tables. We sat at the inside bar and ordered some drinks. They were quite pricey for the small pours and the sugary additives. Better to drink beer or wine here. The Happy Hour food was very good. We started with the Deviled Eggs and the Croquettas. Stopped in here for lunch and first thing you notice is it's designed like a classy old school bar/Restaurant which I think is pretty cool. I was seated immediately in a small booth. I decided to order the tavern brisket dip and beer. The sandwich part wasn't bad although the dip could have been confused with water with some oil because it had no flavor at all and added nothing to the dish. The french fries were made just how I personally like em with some crunch and low/medium salt level. I gave this place three stars but it's more like 3.5 mainly because well it's a nice place it's not doing anything at least with the lunch that almost every other place in the gayborhood part of Philadelphia doesn't do slightly better since there's a ton of restaurants and bars in this area. Pretty good! Visiting fab Philly for a conference downtown, my fellow Elite Yelper and I both came upon Darling Jack's in our search. A third friend suggested a nearby chain, but why forego local flavor and vibes for a cardboard cutout thats available anywhere? It was a late meal so we shared an appetizer and entree: charred broccoli + steak frites. Taking one for the team, I conceded to a medium well cook. And it was still good! I almost always have broccolini instead of broccoli, so was caught off guard by the bright green florets when it arrived to the table. But also very good! The pickled fennel was a delight, and I would have liked even more. Darling Jack's is a great Center City spot that hits the sweet spot between neighborhood tavern and upscale casual dining. The vibe is lively, the bar seating is excellent, and it's an easy place to settle in for a relaxed night out. The long hots pizza was the standout, perfectly crispy crust with great flavor, just the right heat from the peppers, and balanced toppings that make it hard to stop eating. Definitely a must order. Service was fantastic throughout, friendly, attentive, and made the experience even better. And honestly, happy hour here is a must stop if you're nearby, great energy, solid deals, and a perfect place to start (or end) your night in Philly. Really loved dinner and this cozy bistro style spot! We got the whipped ricotta and calamari for appetizers and then I ordered the duck ragu pasta and my husband ordered the steak frites. We were lucky to get one of the two window seats for Let's Do Lunch promotion. We were disappointed that the menu listed on the Let's Do Lunch website was misleading. The menu lists 3 courses. It does not list that it is only a shared app OR dessert. Each restaurant is different so it would be helpful to have this listed on the menu. The server was a bit annoyed to be asked about it. We shared the roasted beet appetizer. The beets were cooked to a nice texture. The sauce on the bottom was pored well. We both had the fish and chips. The French fries were hot and crisp. So I'm very particular with burgers I like to have lettuce and tomato and onion in them. This one specifically did not have that, but I was happily to find out that I could add them if I wanted to the reason why I added vegetables to my burger is because I'd like the freshness that it gives the burger I get tired of the burger otherwise, if I don't have any veggies, the server was amazingly kind and I was able to accommodate this request 10 out of 10 experience will definitely recommend. Came here for brunch but they have a lack of brunch foods. It is mostly lunch foods. That being said, got the chicken and waffles. The chicken was piping hot, tender and flavorful. The waffle was ice cold though. Maybe it was cause it was sitting in the syrup for too long before the chicken was done? One of my favorite happy hours! While I can only speak to their happy hour specials, there's lot to say and I'm sure the full menu is just is good. A nice variety of apps and small plates. Their smash burger and whipped ricotta is always a hit. Happy hour menu includes a variety or drinks and plates that can get you fed a full meal for under 25 bucks. Seating is typically a bit tough to grab, especially if you dare to go during SIPS, but once you get in the service is quick and staff is friendly. The place has a throwback feel with a long marble bar, dark wood accents and red-and-white tile floor. The menu is just as classic with a small but well-curated selection of starters, salads, and entrees you'd expect to find in an elite steakhouse. I chose the iceberg wedge salad and my husband got the wagyu french dip, which were both excellent. Before those arrived, though, we began with the whipped feta and roasted beet starters, each perfectly executed. I also got the "healthy green glow" cocktail -- something like a very fresh, herbal gimlet that made my mouth water. Everything we ordered there was a cut above, full of flavor and plated with flair. My mom, brother, and I were traipsing around the city on the first Sunday of February when it was suddenly dinner time. A quick search told me Darling Jack's was a quick 7-minute walk away. Braving the wind and chill, we trekked there without a reservation and hoped for the best. They were able to seat us immediately, which was awesome. I don't think I'd risk the no-reservation thing during peak times though. The host was super nice and let me know the space used to house Lolita's. I knew it felt familiar for a reason! We were seated in a half booth in their dining room. The booths are super comfy and the ambiance is cozy and warm. Our server, Jason, was top tier. He was on top of things all night and also just very friendly; he even snapped our photo for us. My brother ordered a red wine, I ordered their spiced vodka drink, and my mom asked for a sweet cocktail with a gin base. They crafted a sweetened gimlet for her, and she loved it. My brother and I enjoyed our drinks as well. I ordered the pepperoni pizza, which was super thin and delightful with a nice but not overpowering kick to it. My mom and brother both ordered the butternut squash ravioli, and they loved their dishes. We also started with the mozzarella sticks. There were three of them and they were PERFECT. Legit possibly the best I've ever had, truly, without exaggeration. For dessert, we were all stuffed but couldn't help but indulge. My mom had the banana pudding tiramisu and adored it. I ordered the cheesecake and it was pretty good. My brother had the chocolate mousse and also liked it. This spot shines on all fronts. I wouldn't hesitate to return. Darling Jack's is the type of place that will become your favorite. The ambience is warm and cozy, while also being chic and classic. The juxtaposition is the result of two distinct spaces comprising the whole. The first area when you enter is a cool bar with a few two person booths and small tables. The second area is the cozy classic dining room with pane glass window allowing in natural light and allowing diners to see and feel the hustle and bustle outside. Both spaces are abutted by a tidy open kitchen. In the winter, the kitchen's pizza ovens and grills are as warming as a fireplace hearth. The entire vibe and service is friendly, able, and knowledgeable. The food is simply excellent. The charred broccoli is mouth watering superb. The cruciferous vegetable is charred and tossed in white balsamic dressing, tonnato, pickled fennel, and Royer Mountain cheddar melty topping. This is the queen of all restaurant broccoli dishes. Add a crock of French onion soup, and that might be my last supper starter course. I love pizza, and their cheese pizza is nothing basic. It's the dough, the ovens, the quality ingredients, the mix of provolone and mozzarella cheeses, and the soul they put into making it that has me always ordering it. I should try the others, but I am like a five year old who only wants his cheese pizza. I treat the pizza like a second course to, begrudgingly, share with the table. It is a perfect prelude to the butternut squash ravioli. Just reading those words and these ingredients: butternut squash stuffed raviolis, hazelnut brown butter, sage, smoked ricotta salata, and a healthy dose of garlic. Pasta, butternut squash, brown butter...how could this be anything but phenomenal? It is just that since the cooking is precise. My favorite dish here is the Coal Grilled Trout! Coal-fire may be the magic being spun in the kitchen. The trout is so fresh one would think the restaurant caught it using a fly rod on the banks of a winding Wyoming river somewhere. The perfectly cooked trout is encased in celery root farroto, herbs, green olive-fennel gremolata, and lemon. View the photos accompanying this review for a visual. Now go there and experience the joy. On to the desserts! I rarely have room, but when I do, I get the Warm Apple Bourbon Bread Pudding. The name does it justice. Topped with crème fraiche ice cream, bourbon caramel, and salty walnuts; you will happily break all the dietary oaths and New Year resolutions. I must share some of this review love for the cocktails, too. The bartenders make the perfect old fashioned (in the best possible way) Old Fashion (ask for extra Luxardo cherries). Moreover, almost every specialty cocktail on the menu is worthy of pulling up a barstool and imbibing a tipple or two. The Turtleneck is the perfect balance of sweet and savory with Grand Marnier (my favorite liquor digestif) and chocolate bitters. Also, Jessie's Goldrush with chamomile bourbon and honey will have you rethinking the Jack Daniel's Honey based drinks in favor of this far better choice. What is more, the prices are so reasonable compared to high falutin establishments with fancier aspirations but woefully less substance going for them.
