I thought popping into Moose for brunch on a Sunday would be a good idea. Unfortunately it was heaving and I had to sit outside for 40 minutes waiting for my table. Not a big deal as they said there was a wait but it was unfortunately double what they told me. They also shouted 'Keeley for 1' at full volume outside which embarrassed me a fair bit! When sat at the table I had to ask fellow diners if they would be calling back to take my order or if I ordered at the bar area because there was a queue there and I hadn't been seen for around 15 minutes, a very long time considering I'd spent 40 minutes sat outside looking at the menu! Food ordered I went for the New York moose (parma ham and poached eggs on a bagel with hollandaise sauce) and a cappuccino. Both made up for the time I had waited and my embarrassment. I must start by saying when we walked into moose we were pretty happy after pizzas at slice. We just wanted some coffee and dessert. We had no reservation but were seated straightaway. Between the four of us we ordered a waffle with ice cream, a stack of blueberry pancakes, a snickers milkshake, a cappuccino and two earl greys. Everything was exceptional; the service, the food, the drinks, the presentation, the portion sizes and the staff! We walked in happy, but walked out happier! Moose Coffee may very well be the best place in Manchester to find fairly authentic American breakfast, if not one of the top in the UK. The Manchester shop is not the original, as it grew out of Liverpool a decade ago from people who loved the breakfast diner culture in the states. There are three locations now, and the fourth will be a toss up between Leeds or Birmingham. There's a lot to love about Moose Coffee. Unlike several nearby diners, Moose does not dwell on American kitsch. Instead, the focus is solely on doing things well with the right ingredients that can be procured in the UK. Brittany A. and I stopped in for breakfast at 10AM recently on a Tuesday morning. On a gorgeous day, outdoor patio seating increases their seating by about 40%, but even without there was plenty of tables available for the two of us inside. The interior makes the most of its space without feeling cramped, and is tastefully decorated with the moose theme without camp or succumbing to the dreaded hipster pallet wood and Edison bulb combo. The cafe's menu is mostly breakfast items, but a variety of sandwiches are available as well. Almost none of the menu items could be considered typical or boring in their own way, as even something as simple as scrambled eggs has a twist on them, in this case being made creamy and at least on my dish, covered in hollandaise sauce. The classics are all well represented here, including American style pancakes (not those sad crepe-like things), waffles, french toast, seven kinds of eggs benedict, and even huevos rancheros. Sides include potato hash and surprisingly, 'streaky' bacon (aka proper breakfast bacon). I chose the Van Alen, consisting of a giant egg pile atop a bagel and hollandaise sauce. The meal was heavy enough that I could not have possibly finished. While tackling the task at hand, I sipped on a very competent americano. Brittany ordered (to both our surprise), the Moose Rich Grits. This is the first time I have found grits on a menu in the UK, fyi. The ultimate product was closer to polenta (this dish was thicker in consistency than grits) than what you'll find in the southern US, but still reminded me greatly of home. Most menu items range from £6.20-£8.20, and will probably leave you stuffed until dinner time. The service at the Moose is exceptional, as we were checked on no less than five time during our visit, with the general manager closing out our bill and asking how the food was for us. If you are used to the typical full English breakfast, I highly recommend Moose Coffee as something very different and delicious. read more

After seeing good Yelp reviews for this place, I decided to call in Moose Coffee myself. They don't have any allergen information so I had to sit down with a member of staff, she told me what was gluten free and what wasn't, she didn't appear to be too confident as they was some products like beans she reccomened to me before coming back and saying they had gluten in because of the mustard. The potato hash also has the gluten mustard in, I don't understand why that is needed. I know a few places like Mr Thomas' Chop House who make it gluten free in Manchester (it is awful but that is because of the way they cook it) and I also do homemade versions at home, which still taste pretty great without mustard. Mustard mostly is gluten free, so either she didn't check or they had a brand what did contain wheat. The resturant was quite full on my visit, and actually quite noisy, it could definitley do with being slightly larger as it felt like it was squashed into a small space. I ended up ordering an orange juice and had to cancel my order and left, I didn't want to eat here as they really didn't give me confidence about eating there with me ordering something "gluten free" to find that it was not. It is vital this information is written down, she actually told me she thought the sausage was gluten free, but she couldn't tell me because they had cut the information off, which is pretty disgraceful. I also found everything to be on the pricer side as well, especially with the food. This seems like a nice place if you do not have any dietary requirements and because I didn't have the food it would be unfair to give 1 star, but I do feel 2 stars is quite fair based on my experience. read more

Who would have thought Basil Fawlty was not only alive and well, but had had a sex change and was working in a wannabe hipster hangout in central Manchester. That was the thought that hit me on a visit to this pseudo American dinner. Don't get me wrong the food is great, especially the pancakes, which I had with peanut butter and chocolate, delish, especially if you've got a sweet tooth, but the customer service was severely lacking on our visit. Something you wouldn't expect 'stateside'. After standing in line for around an hour, we asked how much longer the wait would be, only to be told by the young waitress that we should 'count ourselves lucky as some have had to wait for two hours.' I didnt really know how to note Moose Cafe... I've been there few times and have always been very satisfied by their food and drinks! I especially love the Sugar Ray or Nova Scotia! I also had the opportunity to try their huge pancakes that were yumy and definitely helpt me to recover from my hangover! :) However unfortunately this place is getting too popular and they probably need to open a 2nd place! last 2 times I went there it took me over 30 minutes to get served (while they told us 10 to 15 minutes wait) so it was a bit frustrating as we were on our lunch break. so if you have time give this place a go, definitely worth it! otherwise wait for another time! read more

Despite going into Moose on Pride weekend, we were served really quickly. I had a coffee, orange juice and pancakes with bacon and maple syrup. We've tried to get in here before only to find that the wait for a table was too long (a very good sign!) so we popped back for a mid week coffee. We both had lattes and a bagel - hard to go wrong with these, but the coffee was nice, the bagel was fresh and tasty. The interior is great here - everything is moose themed; I'm a particular fan of the antler lights. The menu leans heavily towards those enormous breakfasts which are so famous in North America. The location is great too - close to Market St and St Peter's Square but slightly off the beaten track to get away from the crowds. The other major thing to comment on were the staff - incredibly friendly and attentive. We'll definitely be coming back. read more

Moose Coffee serves absolutely delicious food, the only issues aren't on the plates. To get those issues out of the way they are the queue (plan to wait 30 minutes for a table) and the hit-and-miss service. To be fair to the staff they have never in my experience been rude, but you do wait a while for your food (office lunches aren't really an option) and they are a bit odd with the substitutions (can I swap my fried eggs for scrambled? No, but I can swap them for poached. Ok...). To be fair to the staff again, the flip-side of them making people wait is them being very generous to those at tables enjoying a leisurely brunch. In short: Go at a quiet time and you'll get the brilliant food, untainted by any niggling issues. So let's talk about the food. Moose serves 'American/Canadian inspired breakfasts', which means American pancakes, big egg dishes, waffles, French toast, and grits. This is big on flavour, and mostly big on sugar (though some of the egg dishes are pretty healthy, and the porridge of course). And all of it tastes fantastic. I mean good enough to make the waits more than worthwhile. I went to Moose with 6 friends who allowed me to taste most of the types of food available: not a single thing tasted bad. The pancakes are the big draw for me, fluffy and sweet and simply to die for. All come with maple syrup and butter, with bacon or blueberries or nutella available (note that this tends to come cooked into the pancakes, not on the side). The waffles are seriously sweet, but as with the pancakes the freshly cooked taste avoids it being overwhelming. The eggs seem cooked to perfection every time (someone has it down to a science in the kitchen). None of us tried the grits, but I've had the porridge and it was tasty enough (came with blueberries too, sweet and healthy). The potato hash is a bit garlicky, and the only thing I wouldn't actively recommend. The prices are pretty decent too. A stack (3) pancakes will set you back £5-7, depending on your extras. The main breakfast menu is in the £6-8 range. And the food is seriously filling. 3 pancakes is all I think anyone could comfortably eat, and to my surprise my full feeling didn't quickly fade as it sometimes does after fatty foods. Drinks are a couple of quid, which frankly isn't bad. Ultimately, other reviewers are right: Moose Coffee needs to expand. But don't let the congestion keep you away from this food. Either find a quiet time or factor a delay into your trip - your taste buds will tell you it's a tradeoff worth making. read more

I have been here twice and the two experiences were very different. The first time I went was in December last year and we had to wait one hour for a table, this was fine as we hadn't expected to get one very quickly. The food was good, I had a breakfast burger and my friend had a hot dog with pulled pork. However, the place is let down by the fact that they don't take reservations and they expect you to wait for an hour within the vicinity of the restaurant in case a table materialises sooner. If you're not there, you lose your spot. This is unacceptable for a number of reasons 1. They have NO tables or seats on the patio outside the restaurant so people are expected to stand outside for an hour. 2. There is no heating in the outside area. Waiting in the cold is your only option. 3. The location is so close to the city centre and there shouldn't be any problem with nipping to a few shops On my second visit my experience was much less positive. Once again, we had to wait for an hour and had expected this, so it wasn't an issue. However, when we finally got a table they took our drink orders and then left us for over 30 minutes without taking a food order! We tried to catch their attention, but nobody noticed us and in the end we rudely had to request to take an order. There was no apology whatsoever from the staff. The food this time was below expectations and the potato hash had too much mustard. Overall, my two experiences have made me want to find another place for breakfast when my friends come to visit. read more

Had to wait half an hour for a table, well it was Bank Holiday Monday. It was worth the wait. What an extensive, different and well thought out menu. I chose the 'Lone Star Moose' which was exactly as the menu describes, a 'meat feast' and was completely delicious. If I have to nit pick then I would say the Dijon Mustard was a little stronger than I expected but other than that I couldn't fault it. Prices don't appear cheap, but the portions are American style so you do get a good amount of food for your money. Absolutely incredible breakfasts including possibly the best pancakes I've ever had! Be warned, this places is popular and on the weekend you might have to wait for a table but it is so worth it. I had the 'double Dutch' - two huge fluffy pancakes containing just the right amount of chopped bacon, complete with two fresh fried eggs on top. I covered these with a heap of maple syrup and it was heaven! Apart from the waiting, the only other thing to note is that it's not cheap by breakfast standards, but it's definitely worth the price. After hearing all the hype about Moose from others I decided it was about time that I gave it a try. To be honest my expectations were very high and unfortunately the reality fell way below what I was expecting. My biggest hang up is the queuing system which seems a bit bonkers to be honest. When our group arrived we were told there was a wait, we were really hungry but decided to hang about and see if we could get a table. I asked at this point if we could have a rough estimate of the time we would expect a table as it might be worth putting our name on the list and coming back later if there was going to be a long wait only to be told it could be anytime within the next hour and we'd miss our place if we weren't there. We were so keen to try Moose we decided to risk it. The weather was pleasant and we enjoyed a bit of a chat in the sunshine and all was well until it turned out we'd been waiting over an hour. Then to add insult to injury a group of 5 just turned up and got a table ahead of us. This was really annoying as we were a group of 6 and would happily have squeezed in around the table given. I went to ask the girl in charge what was going on only to be told that the table they wanted us to have was still occupied and there was no way of knowing when it would be free and she can't ask people to leave. Fair point but why not give us the other table then knowing we'd been waiting so long. When I pointed this out she shouted back that I should be grateful that we hadn't been waiting 2 hours like a lot of people have to do. I mean come on there has to be something seriously wrong with their queuing system if people have to wait 2 hours for a table no place is that good that anyone would be prepared to wait that long!!! Why not work like a restaurant who tell people a time when they want a table back by to solve this problem and give the people who are waiting an actual time they can have a table by to make the whole experience more pleasant for their customer who is afterall going to spend money there. I was just about to tell them where to stick their table when it became free so we stayed and ordered. The menu was interesting and full of American classics. I ordered the vegetarian Bronx brunch which was basically griddled potatoes mixed with peppers, halloumi, mustard and artichokes with poached eggs on top. The poached eggs was ok but the rest of it tasted odd and didn't work well together at all. I also didn't like the way they served the packets of butter on top of my warm toast so that when I opened them the butter was just pure liquid that had to be drizzled rather than spread on the toast. A couple of my friends didn't enjoy their breakfast either. They ordered the pancakes and expected the bacon and sausage to be served on the side like they do in America only to discover it was mixed in the pancakes themselves as the sausage was smoked it gave the whole meal an odd flavour. I think Moose is a gimmick that is only popular because there's not much else like it in Manchester once a better place arrives which serves nicer food, has a better queuing system or even here's an idea lets you book a table for a group of 6 or more this place will be blown out of the water and I look forward to the time when it is. read more

Moose coffee is one of my absolute favourite places to get breakfast. I first visited the one on Liverpool with my parents but as that's quite a journey, my usual is now the one in Manchester on York St. It serves a selections of breakfast, mostly American/Canadian standards like pancakes and huevos rancheros but the main star for me is the eggs benedict. They offer this breakfast with many different options like pulled pork and smoked salmon as well as the traditional bacon. This also comes with two eggs and two muffin halves, which allows you to have two options. I had half pulled pork and half smoked salmon, which was amazing. My partner had the huevos rancheros, a first for him but was apparently a success as he keeps asking when we can go back! The only downside is that you will often wait for a table on Saturday or Sunday morning as this is quite a popular breakfast spot. read more

Found this gem randomly on an outing in town with my partner. I love the decor with the quirky 'Moostranaut' (as I like to call it) painting and interesting lighting. We arrived at brunchtime and found that the menu is huge! At least for the breakfast options, so it took a while to choose. We eventually played it safe and had (I forget the actual name now) the bacon and eggs with their original potato hash. It was nice, a bit too much food (but that's not much of a complaint) and maybe a tad too mustardy for my personal taste but I will be back to work through that menu! The staff were really friendly and helpful in finding us a place to sit that was comfortable (my partner is a wheelchair user and it was busy that day). We will definitely be returning! read more

Had heard the word mouth spreading bout this place so me and Claire I. went to check it out one morning (early afternoon). The place is quite small , smaller than I thought it would be but the decor is cool very coffee/diner placeish with random moose paintings on the wall and a chandeliers. the breakfasts were tasty but not mind blowing like I was expecting, the service is great and the pricing isn't too bad either. But for me maybe I expected too much because I was a little underwhelmed by this place maybe I need to give it another chance having only visited once so see you soon Moose Coffee. read more

Great lunch, and they let dogs in! Quick service and a good variety of food on the menu, especially for vegetarians. The bench seats were very comfortable. I would highly recommend anything that they do with chorizo in it! The coffee and fresh orange juice were really tasty. Worth a visit if you're in the area. After hearing a lot about moose coffee and loving American style breakfast, I was excited to finally take my partner for brunch there on Wednesday morning. Upon arrival we waited at the door where there was a sign to wait to be seated, after waiting a while we ventured inside. Although there were about 8 staff milling around it took another five minutes for anyone to acknowledge us and let us know what we needed to do. Already the place was not what I expected, mixing American breakfast with a liberal helping of British pretension. When ordering at the bar I again waited to be acknowledged and ordered a waffles and a pancakes with bacon. Upon requesting scrambled eggs with my waffles I was told they could only do fried. We received our food and I was disappointed to find that the waffles were not American waffles but Belgian waffles that looked like they came from a packet. I requested more syrup and was asked to pay even though I had paid for the meal already. All in all the food was tasty, if not stingy on the bacon but the service and the general atmosphere has left a lasting sour taste in my mouth. read more

Went one afternoon with a friend who recommended it to me because she said the food tastes good and the portion sizes are decent. I tried the pancakes and ordered it with the bacon and maple syrup and WOW it was beautiful. The pancakes were ginormous and fluffy, the bacon was beautifully crispy with the little jug of syrup and butter at the side, mwah beautiful! My friend ordered pancakes with blueberries and vanilla ice cream and that tasted great too. The place was laid back and chilled plus the staff were quick and friendly, what more could you ask for?
