Marty is one of those individuals who has found his true calling. I honestly don't know how he manages to achieve the results he does, but if my experience in working with him for three sessions bears any resemblance to the outcomes he gets with all of his clients than I would say: Trust this man's magic hands! After he worked on my hips, lower back, and chronic shoulder pain the next day my shoulder felt as if I had never sustained an injury at all, and while riding my bike I suddenly realized, "Wow! I feel so powerful and energetic all of the sudden" (only later connecting the dots to the work with Marty the day before)... and that was after just 1 hour! For my third session I arrived after two weeks with a strange and very uncomfortable pain in my left forearm that just sprung up one morning out of the blue (likely from a previous sprained wrist). An hour later and the sensation had completely vanished. This is not hyperbole--Marty is seriously talented! I have no doubt that if you've been suffering with any number of acute or chronic painful conditions there he can likely help you to feel better efficiently. At this point the majority of my chronic issues have subsided but Im going to buy another 3-pack and keep working with him just to see how much better I might eventually feel in my body with more of his careful attention. OK, if I could give Marty 100 stars, I would in a heartbeat. I came in with a bum hip, low back pain and just feeling achy. In one hour, I felt so much better! Marty knows what he's doing, he targets the area that is causing the problem, and then proceeds to fix it. I felt totally at ease w/Marty, he makes the process fun. I highly recommend Marty for massage! My profession requires me to work at a computer all day long. No where is this more evident than in my tight neck and shoulders. It does not take long for the knots to build up! I am often amazed that Marty can identify my pain points just by observing the subtleties in my movements. What Marty was able to do for my dad really and truly gave my dad his life back. My dad flew off of his bicycle and injured his shoulder a whole year ago and he just couldn't find anyone to help him, even his primary doctor called it hopeless. Marty is a sensitive and caring man and listens very well when he asks what you'd like to have done with your body. Because he is married to Elena, he is TOTALLY safe for all women. The moment you meet him, you'll know what I'm talking about. Yes, you can believe the 5 star reviews here. I've seen countless bodyworkers over the years, but none of them have been as intuitive and as skilled as Marty. I came to see Marty with a neck and shoulder issue (injury?) to have him work on alleviating the pain and limited mobility I had. Thinking that he would work exclusively in that region, he discovered that the issue really was related to a recent surgery in my abdomen! He then proceeded working from there and even without working on my neck, things got remarkably better. A few more sessions with Marty and I was back to normal. Totally worth the few 'co-pays' I would have had to pay to see a doctor who would have prescribed me pills which would have treated the symptom, not the cause. Marty was recommended to me by my physician. I have significant and longstanding myofascial adhesions from myriad sports injuries involving my low back and pelvis. After 3 surgeries, the resulting compensations led to insidious changes in my biomechanics. I found Marty through a friend who studied under him, and he came highly recommended. I have done a 10 series with Marty, and it has vastly improved my chronic low back and hip issues. After trying massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, and physical therapy, I believe Rolfing, and Marty's expertise with it, was the thing that tipped the scale. I continue to see him for maintenance and further work. I find this kind of work much more effective and lasting than regular massage, which is undeniably nice and useful but in comparison seems like a fleeting spa treatment, at a similar cost. Meanwhile, chiropractic work only lasts until your unworked muscles and fascia pull any adjustments back out of place. I just finished a 5 day course on Structural Integration with Marty at the SF School of Massage and Bodywork. I found Marty to be an excellent teacher on the subject. I scored when I found Marty--Although I do a lot of yoga--and have practised with very knowledgeable teachers who give detailed, accurate instruction, I do have various pings and dings from not totally straight spine, sitting too much etc. I have found some lovely chiropractors--and a good physical therapist but Marty is the cream of the crop ! I came to Marty with very significant back pain as a result of bulging discs. I brought in two sets of MRI results, and Marty read and interpreted them before doing any bodywork on me. Recently on a trip to S.F. I developed a low grade headache that had been bothering me for a few days. A good friend of mine recommended that that I go and see if Marty could do anything for me. I figured I have nothing to lose. I gave him a call and fortunately fo me he was able to fit me in. Not only did I get a good massage but when the session was up I noticed that my headache was gone. I saw Marty yesterday after struggling with carpal tunnel issues and related tendonitis for about 8 months.Like most people, I work on a computer all day, which is unavoidable -- so my problems had been getting progressively worse despite many efforts to fix them (sleeping with a wrist brace, forcing myself to take breaks/stretch at regular intervals, changing my workstation setup, etc.). I also saw a highly recommended physiatrist a month ago who was not particularly helpful, either. I am actually studying to be a massage therapist. I am an athlete and I continue to pull my left hamstring. I went to see Marty in the hopes that I has a trigger point and not a real pull. I entered Marty's space and was pleased to see that it was sparce and real. He had the necesary items. It felt theraputic and not like a spa. I am interested in healing and no so much in relaxation. He spoke with me about my concerns and we even discussed the fact that I had a scheduled work out the next day and wanted to be able to perform. I had the pleasure of getting to know Marty when I signed up for a 2 week intensive massage course at the SF School of Massage. This was a vacation for myself after a difficult time in my life, both professionally and personally. Marty was one of the 4 amazing teachers I had- the joy he has working in this field was evident for all of us in the program. And the amount of knowledge he brings to the table (pun intended!) - I left the program with a new found respect to body therapists. In class, with just a few moves and within 10 minutes, Marty was able to bring relief and repositioning to my tailbone area, which I had hurt several months previously due to a bad fall. This area had been paining me for about 10 months- I could not believe the difference I felt. The protruding bone in the area of my lower back- gone. Recently, I saw him for a private one-on-one session for extra work in that area and in my shoulder. I immediately began to feel a difference in the movement of my body. He also went over a few body mechanic positions with me as well as gently explained proper ways of sitting. Stress is part of our lives. I'm on a journey to learn how to balance it but I'm also on a journey of learning how to ask for help.
