Love the friendly kids who work here (okay, they're not kids, but I'm old). Love the coffee, love the atmosphere, love the great books at cheap prices. This is a gem in Waltham and I come as often as I can. My only complaint: they're not open early enough, so I can't get my Starbucks fix on my way to work. On top of this being a great bookstore and a great cafe and a terrific coffeeshop, it also has an incredible mission - to help at risk youth. How could it be any more perfect!!! read more

I just stumbled into More Then Words on a lunch break....and boy am I happy I did! The owner of the store was super friendly and helpful. You can tell he loves what he does. There is a great selection of used books, but also new arrivals. The books were priced around $5-$8. In talking to the owner I found out they frequently have guest authors that visit as well. What a great place! Serves a good cause, and if you buy a large coffee, you get a free book (any book!). The atmosphere is generally relaxed and casual, and I've never seen too many people in there at once, which is a plus for me. I will say that some additional seats would be great, and because there tends to be teenagers in there from time to time, it's not necessarily the best place in the world to get reading or work done if you don't have a quality pair of noise cancelling headphones. I volunteer at this very hip used bookstore on Moody Street in Waltham on a weekly basis and I truly look forward to every shift. This place is fantastic in so many ways. It is run by a nonprofit org (TeenLeep) with a good cause; providing teens (who are mostly in state custody) with job and entrepeneurship training. These kids are awesome! Hard working and motivated to do their jobs well. The store is well maintained and very comfortable to browse in. They have an amazing selection of great used books in every genre for very cheap prices. They have a comfy clean couches and chairs and free wi-fi access. They have awesome open mic events on the third Friday of each month, which boast some of the best local slam poets as feature performers. I attend these faithfully, they are really fun! The walls are covered in paintings (for sale) created the teen artists of their sister art entrenpreneurship program, Artists for Humanity. These young artists have also created t-shirts, pottery and greeting cards (also for sale). More Than Words is a very cool and rewarding place to shop and to volunteer. Check it out! Moody St. also has many great restaurants and an independent movie theater. More than Words is a perfect post dinner or movie destination. edit 8/21/08 If I could double the amount of stars I would. This is a great bookstore with a great cause. I would give it more than five stars if I could. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted with a smile and a "how are you today?" The inventory is mainly used, so the selection will vary from week to week. However, I can always find something that I had been wanting to read. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. The shelves are neat and tidy and well-organized. They even take donations of books so that you can keep your book shelves just as well organized. read more

I've been volunteering at More Than Words for several years. It's a fabulous, well-run, caring organization. More Than Words has created a great model of helping young people gain control of their lives by learning to run a business. In addition to learning business and leadership skills, the youth also receive a lot of support and mentoring from staff and volunteers. The organization shows a lot of appreciation for its volunteers. I really enjoy working with the youth every week, and seeing them make progress toward their goals. I highly recommend More Than Words as a rewarding and meaningful volunteer opportunity. read more

Visited this awesome little shop for the first time during one of their recent sales. First: the selection of books was curated very well and I found a lot of things that I'd like without having to sort through a Barnes & Noble size store. Second: the staff is wicked friendly and helpful. Third: it all supports a good cause. I LOVE that we live in a town with multiple bookstores, which is a rarity these days. Very nice place to sit down, have some coffee or a snack, and buy books for 1/2 price or less - they're 'used', but many are in such good condition that they look new. Staff are high school students who are very nice and also very competent. It's nicely furnished and clean. You're helping a good cause (the bookstore has training programs for youth) and doing something nice for yourself as well - a win-win situation. This place is a great bookstore with an even greater mission of giving youth a chance to gain employment skills, and offering other services to them. The store is clean and has a great variety of books. I had a yelp deal voucher and when my books rang up very slightly over the amount for the voucher, the owner waived the extra few dollars, which was very nice of him. He asked how my experience was and if I found everything I was looking for, but in a sincere way to promote true customer service. I really enjoyed this place and will return! read more

I love bookstores. This charming used bookstore has a wonderful selection, comfortable chairs that invite you to sit and browse through a book while sipping a yummy latte. Really interesting store with nice staff and a great cause. Their CD's are really awesome from my days of youth, I bought 98 Degrees, Gavin DeGraw, and the Varsity Blues soundtrack for a total of...... five dollars. As one who always goes to the best local bookstore in each city I visit, MTW remains one of my favorite bookstores in the world. It's comfy, has great coffee, staff are super friendly, and it's integrated into the community. It is more than just a book shop like NE Mobile or other stores, but like a sanctuary for people who love a good story. Charlotte's Web is just 10 feet across from Jack Kerouac is just 15 feet across Great Expectations, which sells for pennies on the dollar. Plus, Moody st. is kind of a funky place to be -- Lizzy's, Tuscan Grill, Upper Crust, Mother India and Solea all in throwing distance and all very delicious. The furniture can't be beat, and you don't feel like you are being rushed out of the store like some shops in Cambridge. A++ read more

I took 15 grade 8 students to the open mic last night and they absolutely loved it! It was a first for all of us and we had such a great time. What a powerful educational and social experience. I first visited this bookstore with my children ranging in ages 9-16. I was pleasantly surprised by the level of courteous, friendly, knowledgeable and professional service. The book store is ample, sunny and yet provides a cozy atmosphere. Very comfortable seating located in various locations within the store and an ample selection of books. I have yet to leave the store without purchasing 5 or 6 books. read more

I really loved my visit to this store in 2012. It was full of great books for fair prices, and the store staff was helpful, courteous, and kind. I totally loved the vibe and ambiance here, and the store had a great selection. Furthermore, I understand that they assist at-risk youth obtain jobs and establish themselves. If I lived in Boston, I'd certainly shop here more often and would even consider volunteering. I bought 6 children's books for $5 that were in a bargain book section. Great price and the books look as close to new as they can get while being used. I didn't realize it was a non-profit until I checked out their website after I went there. With that, I will be going there more often and will look for books to donate. read more

First impression: friendly, helpful and attentive staff. A very nice feel to the place. The "wi-fi" is free and works well. Their hours are perfect (open 'til 10pm on weeknights, 11 on weekends). The only problem here is the very limited seating. It's more of a bookstore than a cafe. The books selection seems to be all used books, as I am pretty sure that their stock comes from donation (and I overheard one of the managers say that any books they cannot use or sell get donated to somewhere else). Books are very reasonably priced and it's nice to see a used bookstore that sells something other than old romance novels (a dying breed). From what I've gathered in the past ten minutes (writing this as I'm sitting here) this is a not-for-profit organization geared toward helping (as much as I hate the phrase) "at risk youth" and working closely with the community. The slogan on their stylish sign reads "Empowering Youth to Take Charge of Their Lives by Taking Charge of a Business". This is a valiant and admirable effort and the most interesting business I've come across since moving to Waltham. Congrats, I wish you well! read more

I've come into the store multiple times in the past year, since I live right down the street. They have a good selection and great prices. I am giving only 3 stars becuase of the staff. While they are friendly there always seems to be too many in the store at once. Typically when I'm here there is more than double the staff per customers. They're usually standing or sitting behind the counters chatting, loudly. Or they're standing in the aisles gabbing. The past several times I've been in the main topic of conversation is the break of one of the staff members and how long they have on the timer. I'm not sure why it's such a big deal that they only have 7 minutes left. And usually the staff is taking their break in the store - chatting with those still on the clock. In my experience, good staff usually take their break outside to take a breather, they have a watch and come back (and quietly rejoin the others) on time. When I come in here I feel like I'm stepping into staff social hour. I would come here more often and spend more time (and money) in here if the staff were a little more professional. read more
