I've enjoyed Mornings Kolaches at a number of functions over the years, and I finally bought my own from this location. So glad I did. Service here was friendly and efficient on my visit. Prices are comparable to other kolache joints. And the place is clean. The kolaches, though... First, the bread is yeasty and somewhere between airy and dense, which is wonderful in my book. The fillings are marvelous. Though I've tasted several varieties, I always go back to the sausage and cheese. According to the company's website, they use Hormel products. All I know is that the sausage is quality and not over-salted like so many other kolaches out there. My favorite, indeed! read more

I'm not usually a stop and grab Kolaches kind of girl but this morning I was craving one and decided to try Mornings since it's close to work and I think I recall a co-worker saying she really liked them. It kind of missed the mark for me. I ordered a sausage and cheese and an egg an cheese kolache. They were approximately $2.70 each. I felt like the bread was a bit too soft ( I like mine a bit more firm) and I didn't get any flavor from the egg, cheese or the sausage. Not to mention I saw a teeny baby bug across the register as I was paying so that was a slight turn off. read more

The workers pulled the tray of the jolly peno popper kolaches and said they were out. Not only did he order before the phone order, but he was standing in the store and the only customer there. The kolaches here are incredible. All the flavors. 100% recommend. The only reason I knocked off a star is because everytime I go in and pay with card for a single kolache and a drink, they watch me sign the little sheet as if expecting me to tip. And when I don't tip, they don't say have a nice day... I don't like when people expect things that should just be an action of courtesy. Makes me feel obligated to tip even when I didn't want to in the first place. People need to learn the etiquette of giving their guests privacy when they are signing the receipt for them. read more

A kolache? What's that? And don't you think Texas is a strange place to look for a kolache? Actually, Texas is the perfect place to look for a kolache because Galveston is where the kolache first entered the U.S. Texas is not just big, it is diverse. Texas pulled together a very wide collection of cultures during the immigration land rush years of the mid-1800's. Each of these cultures added a unique flavor to Texas making a truly diverse society, rich in traditions, music, dance and food. The Czech/Slovak's brought a type of pastry consisting of a fruit or cheese fillings call the kolache. In Europe it was originally only a sweet dessert. Like most things coming to the U.S. the kolache changed and now you can find fruits, meats, cheeses and/or vegetables as filling. Mornings Kolaches has been going strong since their humble beginning in 1991. They now have seven stores. But the big news was the bold move in 2004 when they created the "California Panitos", "the beautiful sandwich." If you have not tried a California Panito, then you should. Even today our Czech cultural beginning are growing. (Oh, if you live in California like I do and want a California Panito or even a real kolache I recommend you go home to Texas. So far there are none for sale west of Houston.) Czech immigrants also settled in the middle of Texas. If you want to celebrate and, really who doesn't, I recommend a visit to Caldwell, Texas. I haven't been here personally, all of my donut shops are nearby thankfully. Though, I was given a leftover bag from Mornings Kolaches. Inside was a chocolate chip muffin and a chocolate chip cookie, the driver I was helping left the two sweets for me. I guess he had gotten a sugar rush from the other two; a donut and kolache he had already eaten. The chocolate chip muffin was overly sweet. It was soo chocolately from the cake consistency and chocolate chips. I was taken over by it; my mouth was unbearable to swallow the sweet cascaded down and around gums, tongue, and palate. All I was looking for is a swig of water to wash the tough muffin away, but no H2O in sight. Same with the chocolate chip cookie, it was good; Yes, but too sweet to be eaten on a hot afternoon with no liquid to aid my throat. It gave me all the strength and rush to the brain to hustle on and off the truck to deliver packages. But I would advise you to drink something after eating it. Don't be like me, (sarcastically choking and gasping for saliva) while my driver drives and continues to pass me boxes. Lol, I'm joking! This is hands down my favorite kolache place in the Houston area! I have been going here since high school and I have still yet to find any kolaches better than their ham & swiss. They use sweet bread that is just addicting and load up on cheese, which I am definitely a fan of. The biggest downside to Morning Kolaches however is that they are not open on Sundays! That is usually the day my family wants to buy a big box but unfortunately cannot. They would make so much money if they were open on Sundays. If you are in the South Houston area, definitely try out Morning Kolaches, you will not be disappointed! read more

The place itself has a couple table inside to sit and eat if you'd like, with a couple registers up front where you order. They have a great variety of kolaches as well as some pastry options. Our friends north of the Bay Area corridor will attest to their out-of-towners that you haven't visited Houston if you haven't had a kolache from Shipley's. While that in itself may be true, unbeknownst to most Houstonians who live outside Clear Lake, Pasadena or any other of our coastal communities is the culinary marvel that is Morning Kolaches. There's a certain art in the dough that this chain of kolache bakers have mastered during my three decades of eating stuff that prevents me from ever getting down to a 32-inch waist. Sure, you could have the standard jalapeno kolache here, which is the mark of any good kolache shop. But if happen upon a tray of bacon-and-cheese delights coming out the oven, grab yourself one and I'm willing to bet my 401K that you will not have a better-tasting breakfast ever for under $2. The bread is the perfect marriage of a regular roll and a sweet roll. It's not flaky and it's not gooey. It's fluffy and oh so nice when you bite into it. When you walk in the door, the aroma of freshly baked sweet breads lifts you off the ground and carries you to the counter. At the counter, you gaze at the wide array of kolaches. You can choose from the traditional and more common sausage and cheese (with or without jalepeno), the fruit-filled kolaches, or the ranchero -- my personal fave. The ranchero is a scramble of eggs, sausage, onion, and bell pepper with a southwest flavor. Even better, there's a frequent buyer card! It's just the right amount of sweet that sets it so apart and so much better than the run-of-the-mill Shipley's. People like the recipe of the bread so much that they sell rolls for the Holidays. You can pre-order rolls by the dozen and pretend you made them yourself! nom nom nom. They have Sausage, Sausage and Cheese, Sausage and Cheese with Jalapeno, Ranchero, Italian, Ham and Swiss, Bacon and Cheese and Bar-B-Q Beef. They also have cinnamon rolls, cream cheese and fruit kolaches. The fruit comes in Apple, Apricot, Strawberry, Cherry, Peach, Lemon, Blueberry. All the prices range from $1.05 - 1.25 a piece or $10.50 - $12.50 a dozen. They also have a frequent purchase card, so every time you pick up a dozen you get a stamp towards a free one. My only thing is that I wish they were open longer and inside Houston's inner loop. If they opened an all day or late night store in Houston I might die from gaining copious amounts of weight too quickly! I always get sad because I can usually get out to Clear Lake on Sundays, but guess what they are closed on Sundays. Oh my freaking goodness this is so good. Way better than Kolaches Factory or equivalent. It's cheaper and better dough FO SHO! Most other kolache places just don't meet the quality to this place. I'm more of a simpleton and get the sausage and cheese kolaches but I get like 3 or 4. (I could get more but I have to control myself) and avoid the awkward stares as I harf down such delicious treats with such quickness. Located within the strip center near Pet Co closer to the side where the gas station is if you're searching for it. Outstanding place to get Kolaches in the Clear Lake area. Specifically, the variety is outstanding, the quality is well above average, and the prices cannot be beat. I usually get three kolaches for about what you'd pay for a breakfast meal at any fast food restaurant (~$4) and it tastes way better and is more filling. The location is plain the the place is small. It's a grab and go type arrangement. The service is usually fast, they work to move customers through. It is true that sometimes they run out of items, especially late in the morning. This is a good indication that you're getting fresh kolaches, not yesterdays. Or they could stock everything all morning and have to charge more for wasted product. Like any good bakery, they run out of stuff late in their hours. I honestly went about a year in Houston before I tried a Kolache. Then I carpooled with a colleague one morning and he stopped at a little spot near the Kemah bridge. Hey these things are pretty good. I then ate Kolaches pretty regularly until one faithful morning. I was doing some coverage for a Doc who allowed pharm reps to provide food to the staff when they came in. On this first day of coverage work the rep came in and placed her food out then asked me to hear the pitch, I told her to make it quick. I figured I would grab one of these biscuit things she brought in while she gave me the script. As she talking I take a bite, (in my mind I am thinking as her voice goes Charlie Brown telephone).......ZOMG! What is this? Is it a bun or a biscuit or what? IS THIS A DIFFERENT TYPE OF KOLACHE? Much better than the once I purchase that are just buscuits wrapped around a link and slice cheese. I THINK THIS IS A KOLACHE, A SUPER KOLACHE, THE BEST KOLACHE EVAR!!!!!!!!!! She ended her pitch and asked for a signature. I told her, I would only sign if she told me where she got these super kolaches. She says " I just stopped some random place, I usually get donuts at Shipley's but I was running late. Look on the box over there." YES! NOOOO! She had covered the labels on every box with her pharmaceutical stickers. I then found the missing clue that would lead me into Kolache coma for my remaining time in Houston, the reciept said Mornings Kolache. Hands down, best kolaches in Clear Lake. what makes morning kolaches better than the rest is the dough. they use a sweeter yeast dough than kolache factory or shipleys. it is delish! the sausage and cheese is my personal fav. the boy loves ham and swiss and bacon and cheese. warm doughy pockets of artery-clogging goodness. if savory kolaches aren't your deal, try the cream cheese kolache. it will open your eyes to a whole new world of calorie binging. morning's also makes muffins: glorious morning (carrot cake muffin), blueberry and chocolate chocolate chip. and, if you're lucky, you can grab a cinnamon roll before they fly off the shelves. the sell katz coffee and have at least 3 varieties daily. there is one lady there who is super friendly and always makes you feel like a regular, even if you've only been there one time before! Cons: they're not open Sunday! boo. oh well. i guess that is good news for my waistline. My boyfriend used to live right next to Mornings, and even though we've moved, we still make the weekend trek to get the kolaches! read more

I'm from California, and let me tell "y'all" what a treat kolaches are! My girlfriend introduced them to me and though I admit to not having tried kolaches from anywhere else, my girlfriend says these are the best and I figure I shouldn't argue with a local. I've only ever had Mornings Kolaches, and this is one of those times when ignorance is truly bliss. My personal favorite is still the first kolache I ever had: jalapeno. The bread is soft and sweet which serves as a nice contrast to the sausage, cheese, and bits of jalapeno. I've also had the ranchero and a bite of a cherry cream which were also good, but no kolache experience is complete for me without a jalapeno kolache. It is honestly a taste of heaven, and though I've had some awesome food in Houston, kolaches were the biggest pleasant surprise. I love kolaches so much that I've had them on every trip to Houston and have had them delivered to Los Angeles whenever the girlfriend visits. If you go and they're out of jalapeno, chances are that I am responsible. Sorry! If you're dating someone from out of town and want to make sure they stay with you for the long haul, kolaches may be the way to go, especially the ones from Mornings Kolaches. I don't understand what all the positive reviews are saying. Yes, the kolaches are good, but they are by no means "amazing." And the food can be good, but if the service isn't there, the food might as well be trash. Good food can make your morning, but bad service can ruin your day. This is the second time I am came here. I walked in a full hour before closing and less than half of the menu was still available. They were cleaning up and it took them over a minute to realize that the person standing there was a customer. They were less than courteous. Instead of greeting me they just stood at the register. They have the best kolaches in the world by far! I miss this place so much since I don't live in TX anymore... The bread is so soft and fluffy and the fillings are yummy. My favorites are the ham and swiss or the sausage and cheese. So good if you happen to catch a new batch when they are still toasty hot! So simple yet so good. One of my only regrets from moving from Houston back to my home in Pennsylvania is that there are no Kolache bakeries here. Heck no one even knows what they are. Czech style kolaches made by a guy probably named Juan?? I've had some great kolaches in my life, shout out to Czech Stop near Waco and The Kolache Factory in College Station. The Whale told me that Clearlake was spitting out some mean kolaches... had to give it a shot. We ended up getting the bacon and cheese, boudain, jalapeno poppers, jalapeno sausage with cheese, and ranchero. Bacon and cheese - It wasn't warmed up in the microwave so i'll let the fact that the cheese had congealed slide. but since bacon and cheese is a classic combination, you really can't go wrong. Boudain -one of my favorites, I like boudain.... put it inside sweet and pillowy pastry? Done deal, i'm not sure why other kolache joints add boudain to their menu... probably because boudain is more common near Nawlins :-( Jalapeno poppers - Another one of my favorites.... cream cheese, jalapenos, and bacon?? Did i mention cream cheese? To be able to create a kolache that had every flavor profile of a popper was pretty cool, props Mornings Kolaches Jalapeno sausage with cheese - by the title, you'd think it was a sausage stuffed with pork, jalapenos, and cheese.... wrong. Unfortunately, the kolache was merely a sausage with a sliver of jalapeno and american cheese.... but since i'm obese, i still ate it anyways :-) Ranchero - a play on huevos rancheros, it's a kolache with some eggs, beans and salsa. I'm guessing Juan came up with this menu item and i'm glad he did. This is my favorite kolache place ever. It is perfect that it has such a convenient location in Clear Lake. I think there are several other locations as well. Each kolache is $1.40-$1.80 I think and SO worth it. My favorites are ranchero, cream cheese, bacon and cheese, and ham and swiss. They are constantly being made fresh and if you're lucky enough to get a fresh, warm one, it is the best thing that has ever melted in your mouth. Customer service is great too. They always offer to heat up your kolaches for you, so they still have their warm freshness. The dough is insanely soft and drool-worthy - haven't found another place that is comparable. They are quick. They also have a loyalty program, where you get a stamp for every visit and after 10 visits, you get 3 free kolaches and a coffee. MUST TRY FOR ANY KOLACHE LOVER. read more
