Located on east River Street, Morrell Park is the only river front park in Savannah. It is a linear passive park that many people pass through as they walk along the river. During my visit two guys were filming their Islamic religion show so of course I had to make a cameo in the background.
The park contains two monuments. The first is the famous Waving Girl statue n honor of Florence Martus who would stand with her border collie and wave at every ship entering the port from 1887 until 1931. The second monument is a cauldron that was lit for the 1996 Olympic Game for the yachting event held in Savannah. Park amenities include benches, landscaping, and interpretive signs about the history of ships which are posted next to the fence lining the river. It is said that this 236 x 26 foot park has the softest grass in Savannah. Sometimes the city hold yoga events in the park and it is the perfect place to take a respite from the shopping on River Street and watch the boats sail by. read more
