Add a glass of their Syrah or Pinot, and it doesn't get much better than that. You can tell Marco Cappelli is a master of his craft. They're sustainable, high-quality, well-made wines and unlike anything I've had before. I was there on the weekend and treated myself to their pizza, which was amazing! Perfectly cooked and paired beautifully with the wine. I also tried their charcuterie platter, which was the perfect complement to the tasting. I loved how thoughtful their wine club is, too--it's a refillable bottle system, which makes it eco-friendly and super convenient. This spot is an absolute hidden gem, and I'd recommend it to anyone visiting Placerville.

The entrance was a little odd but once we walked in, it was super cute and welcoming. We walked into a quaint little room in the back and to our surprise, everything was set up. We had 6 flights of wine with individual cheese board pairings. The hostess gave us the history of the mansion and confirmed that it is haunted. We enjoyed the wine and bought a case of wine with a little of everything, the mojo Cali, and the limonello. All very good. At the end of our tasting, there was a power outage! Pretty spooky..... Ruggero is always hospitable and never forgets his club members as we appreciate his excellent vintner skills. I highly recommend visiting the winery and enjoy the various specialty wines alongside Ruggerio's pizza and pastas if scheduled accordingly. The winery is a little over an hour's drive from the Sacramento metro area but well worth the time.

The only time to do it is when I feel strongly that something is wrong. Not even the panoramic view can save Skinner anymore, and that used to be my favorite part. The wine is not as good as it used to be, either. Customer service has gone downhill over the years and is now some of the worst I've ever experienced in my life. If you have mobility issues of any kind, please be warned before coming here. This was our last stop during this year's Passport weekend a few months ago. I know, why didn't I review before? I should have. I don't have an excuse other than being behind in my reviewing as a way of life on Yelp. I was also and continue to be embarrassed. Reading this might cause second hand embarrassment, fair warning. I have been having ongoing back (sciatica) issues which can make it painful to stand or walk for prolonged periods, and I was really going through it on the day I was last here. So, I decided to use the handrail and try to go down the stairs to the tasting area. I really should have used the ramp (I did on my way out, undaunted), but instead slowly made my way down the stairs trying not to wince. I probably just looked like another drunk fat girl having trouble with stairs. And in fact, I did indeed to one staff member in particular. She clearly knew nothing about wine, and one wonders why she even found herself working here. When pouring for me and my friends, she gave me a tiny pour in comparison. I know I probably looked down at it and frowned, being tired, in pain, and wondering uhhh why? Her response to this was to laugh loudly at me and tell me that I was clearly drunk walking down the stairs like that and didn't need anymore wine. She was watching me, she said. (Watching me struggle down the stairs. What a nice person.) She continued to laugh thinking she was so funny and superior. Yikes on bikes. Girl, when I tell you I was shocked I mean I was stunned silent. I didn't know what to say or do. Not only did I feel embarrassed for myself but I felt embarrassed for her. Why would you do that to someone? Someone you don't know? My friends were kind and distracting and made me feel better, and I didn't want to cause a scene so I didn't say much of anything else to her. I just wanted her to go away, to be frank. I know she couldn't know what I was feeling if I didn't say so but you know what? It does not matter. What she did was not only hideously rude and unprofessional. It. was. dangerous. You do not. discourage someone. from using mobility or accessibility aids. The way they were intended. Ever. For any reason. That is what they are there for. Drunk or not, which I was not. But even if I was. People like me who have only started recently to experience mobility issues are in an especially vulnerable adjustment period, and the last thing we need is to think about our pride and how someone might make fun of us if we decide to use a railing the way it was intended. And not just a random someone at that. A person this winery employs. This was an incredibly unsafe, terrible experience that I never wish to relive, and I hope nobody else, abled or otherwise, encounters this. Skinner, this was completely unacceptable. No, I don't know her name, but she was incredibly rude, loud, and the least knowledgeable person I've ever encountered at a winery.

THE SETUP Now located in Placerville, CA - a mere eight (8) miles from its old location in Camino - but now much closer to the business center of the thriving metropolis of Placerville - Crystal Basin Cellars has amped up their profile and marketing efforts to grow their business. Having been a fan of Crystal Basin Cellars for the better part of a decade now, I've thoroughly enjoyed taking my treks up here to The Apple Hill region of the foothills to take in the bounty of Crytal Basin that it wonderfully shares through it's vineyards, barrel rooms and wine bars. RELATED ENDEAVOR In addition to the winery itself, it should be pointed out that Crystal Basin Cellars has a "Crystal Basin Station" - it's stand-alone Wine Bar - located in the Historic Folsom Street district. MY WINE PICKUPS Owner Mike Owens signed me up to his White Wine Redneck Club last time I was up visiting him and the Crystal gang at their old Camino facility: I get three (3) wine pickups a year with 3 different varieties of white wine (my choice) for only about $60 each pickup (3 bottles, not bad!), all excellent wines. The last few times, it was far easier to get my pickup from their Folsom location when I was doing other stuff in Old Historic Folsom. However, this time, I wanted to visit this NEW location. It was a lot of fun to get the tour of the new winery facility with KZ, try some new wines (such as Renegade White), and do my Tri-Annual Wine Pick-up! EXTRA EXTRA! And I can't miss mentioning the awesome new line of mustards, olive oils, balsamic vinegars, spices, pretzels and other yummies you will find filling up the shelves. SO GOOD. We did a tasting and our wonderful host was so friendly and helpful explaining the history of the winery and all the different wines we were enjoying. After our tasting, we bought a bottle and sat in the gardens to enjoy the beautiful day and surroundings. There's a lot of different vineyards you can choose from in the area, so make sure Boeger is on the list!
