We used to love going to this winery! Unfortunately the old lady that pours the wine is a complete jerk! She ruins the experience every time! She is rude, not friendly, and our last visit was the last straw. She accused me and my mom of stealing a champagne stopper and it wasn't until we showed her OUR stopper was engraved she stopped and rolled her eyes at us. Such a shame because the wine, beer, patio, snacks and everyone else who works there is awesome. Just that old bitter lady at the front needs to go! read more

Less than $30 for most wines and the best part is that they are already aged quite a bit before release. The service was great, too. Rachel was super friendly and laid back. We bought several bottles of 2019 & 2020. It's awesome to get wine that's six-seven years old at this price point. Super glad we stumbled upon this gem. We will be back for sure. Being a local resident, I do get to enjoy many of views tastes and service. I had family out from Texas and up from Los Angeles. We decided to go and check out a few places that were close to town as we did not have a lot of time. 1. There was not a "welcomed greeting" or vibe as we came through the door. The place was desolate and had two people walking out as we were coming in and we felt not wanted. 2. Aesthetically the place is dilapidated. 3. Unpleasant and dead to the ear. 4. Did a flight and landed it real quick. The taste of their wine is less than desirable. 5. I don't know if the man in the woman are married that are behind the counter, but both of them were hammered slightly rude and unpleasant to talk to.. note: there are so many other wonderful and welcoming places in the immediate area of this vicinity that I suggest you to not waste your time or taste here. read more

Just finished up two wine tastings and a brief sample of some beers and everything was delicious! Great wines with a great view! We had arrived with our two small dogs and the staff behind the counter where friendly as well as the other patrons tasting! The wines were much more our style - more on the dry side than the sweet - love the types of vines growing in the foothills! Some of their Reserve Chardonnay, Meriticious Red was great and took home a bottle of the Barbera Rosato. Their Malbec, Syrah and Petite Syrah were also some of my favorites, as well as the Barbera. The experience is casual, the views are great, the price is right, but the wines are mediocre. (Didn't try the beers) The biggest problem is that the winemaking style here seems to result in wines that are rather nondescript... the typical flavors you'd expect from those varietals don't tend to shine through. So it's more like they have two flavors here: white (which I wasn't a fan of their white varietals), or red (which taste ok, but range in body from light to medium... not a single hearty, full-bodied wine here.) The syrah tasted almost just like the cabernet sauvignon (and neither one was as dark and rich as they usually are)... the malbec, too, was a medium-bodied affair, but we found it the most interesting of the lot, with a sort of cedar-like flavor. But the prices are affordable and the view of the vineyards is quite nice. read more

I absolutely love this winery and have been there more times than I can count. The property and views are gorgeous. The wine, especially the rosé and California champagne, is really delicious. The issue is the staff. Quite simply, they are rude. They do not seem to care if you're there or not. I joined the wine club during a visit, yet never received a shipment. When I returned to the winery months later and inquired about it, I was told there was an issue with my credit card. First off, there wasn't; it was determined that the charge was never processed. Secondly, had there really been an issue, why didn't someone reach out to me about it? Instead, I get credit card shamed when it was the winery's oversight. When I "re-joined" the wine club, I was told that I could request white wine instead of red wine. They said I would get an email in advance of the shipment and, at that time, request white instead of red. Two days ago, I received my first shipment (did not receive an advance email). It contained one bottle of rosé and two bottles of Merlot. Two bottles of Merlot?! With all of the varietals they produce, couldn't they have been a little more creative with their offerings? It felt like they were trying to unload an abundant supply of Merlot. When I inquired about it, I was told that I "should've received an email"--yes, I should have! But, alas, I did not. After these two incidents, combined with the lack of friendliness in the tasting room (unless you're a local), I decided to cancel my membership. The man I spoke with at first tried to defend the two bottles of Merlot by saying they are different years (ok, but it's still Merlot!). The woman said she'd cancel my membership, but because I had only been sent one shipment, she's going to charge me $50 to cancel my membership. I told her that they do not make people feel appreciated for being customers and wine club members, then told her to charge me $50. It's a small price to pay to cease ties with a winery that doesn't care if you go there or not. Aside from that, they only offer a 20% discount to members. I belong to a winery in Avila Beach that offers 40% discount to members and makes customers feel welcomed and appreciated, the way it should be! I'm hoping the winery is finally sold (it's been on the market for a couple of years) and the staff is replaced with friendlier people who don't make customers feel uncomfortable the second they walk in the door. read more

Absolutely gorgeous views. One of the most beautiful wineries I have ever visited. Wine and beer? Yes. People were walking down into the vines and no one seemed to mind, so we went on a little adventure down to the pond. The staff was very friendly and accomodating. The Viognier and the Cabernet Sauvignon were my favorites. The Viognier didn't carry the strong perfume that they typically do, but the taste was right on point. It's a perfect summer wine, or all year if you live in California like I do! The Cabernet Sauvignon, with soft touches of cherry and cedar was very exiciting. read more

Never noticed their Yelp rating, and this is tragic so I had to leave my own... this place is AMAZING!!! We just moved to the area so we joined as wine club members. Not long after we were invited to a dinner and wine pairing free of charge, not to mention the many times we've spent the afternoon on the balcony with a picnic and friends. The kids have always loved running through the property as well, climbing trees and rocks. It's just gorgeous and quite a plus they have beer as well as wine. Such a wonderful, laid back place. Arlene and Dan have been here forever, she is the hospitality and Dan makes the wines and beer. Don't come here if you are looking for a pretentious experience, it is not going to happen. A visit it about relaxation, enjoying a fantastic vineyard view, hearing and seeing the birds that know what a special place this is, and drinking great wines and beer. Don't dress up, come as you are and be who you are. A lot of love and work goes on here, mostly by the two people who make it a perfect example of a home grown winery that make it the neighborly place it is. Beautiful view looking down on the vineyard but that's it. Plain and boring inside the tasting room. No seasonal decorations inside or outside. No humor , little conversation. I get the feeling of "taste our grocery store wine and leave. I don't want to help you ". There's so much Gold Hill could do with their facility but choose not too. I've been here 3-4 times since my initial review and wanted to give an update on my overall experience after a number of visits. First of all the wine is still good especially the Cab Franc and the Meriticious Red. And the Champagne is a favorite of my wife's and we buy a case every time we run out. I'm lowering my score mainly due to the staff and experience with the staff, first of all when I do a tasting I expect and want a brief description and a little history of the wine I'm tasting. The staff just pour it and walk away, then if you try to get some info on the wine they really don't know much about it! They aren't really enthusiastic about their wine and excited to talk about it. It's a shame... Also lowered score a star because they don't seem care about staff wearing masks during this pandemic! I've been here 2 times during the pandemic and both times there wasn't one staff member wearing a mask, no matter what your beliefs are, when you run a business you should follow the rules. When I go to a restaurant I expect that the cook washes their hands before handling my food for the customers safety whether or not that cook believes it's necessary to wash their hands. I expect health safety practices from a winery and wine server's as well ! read more

I cannot recommend this place enough! I chose Gold Hill initially because my boyfriend normally complains about wineries, so I figured a place with beer for him would be perfect. From the first Second we arrived, we loved Gold Hill. We were welcomed warmly and the two ladies at the bar ran up to greet my dog (which I LOVED!), and then jumped into figuring out to how to could help us. We spent about an hour doing the tastings and then got a glass to enjoy while we walked around the vineyard. It was BEAUTIFUL, with picnic tables spread throughout looking over the green hills. We ended up getting a few bottles to take home along with some other goodies (mustard, bbq sauce, and honey) Beautiful scenery, incredible customer service, and excellent wine and beer. My friend Alesha, her boyfriend and I decided to come to Gold Hill Winery for a little wine tasting since this is her favorite winery in the Placerville area. It's located quite a drive off the freeway down a little two lane road next to David Gerard Winery. Once you get there the scenery is beautiful. They have an event space for weddings as well as a separate tasting room with a relaxing deck to sit outside on and enjoy your wine with a nice view of the surrounding hills and their vineyard. For wine tasting they have a list of white wines and a list of red wines to choose from. You get five sample pours per person which I thought was quite generous. The lady helping us seemed a little put off that we were out wine tasting at the winery (maybe he had better things to do than help us?) but the other lady working with her was very nice and offered us some chocolates to eat; which the original lady promptly took away without us having a taste. This unfortunately is quite typical when younger adults go out wine tasting. I wish they had more food or snacks available to purchase because there isn't anywhere to eat around the winery. They also brew their own beer which I thought was a nice change of pace from the typical winery. I'm not a big beer person so I stuck to the wine, but they looked really good. My favorite wine was their Viognier which I purchased a glass of to enjoy on their deck. My friend purchased a glass of one of their red wines as well as a bottle of it since her Dad is a member of their wine club. I would definitely come back to Gold Hill again for another glass (and possibly bottle!) of their Viognier because I haven't stopped thinking of it since! read more

We came for the wine but we stayed for the beer. Someone spied the beer taps behind the bar during our wine tasting session. We found out they offered a 5 beer sampler for $7.50. A few of us abandoned wine tasting for a chance to taste the brews of Gold Hill. "Light" Beers: The Gold Trail Pale Ale - Crisp and refreshing. "Dark" Beers: Old Miners Scotch Ale - Creamy with rich coffee notes. Hanks Honey Porter- This had a subtle sweetness that wasn't obnoxious and didn't result in a "dumbed down" version of beer. I took my time with this one after the first sip. I regret not buying a few bottles to take home. read more

Did they just pour syrup in this instead of sugar? (2/10) Hank's Honey Porter - smooth, good finish, balanced, better quality (5/10) Axe Pic'n Stout - Fail! Is this water out of a river? (1/10) Estate Wine: Viognier was good, smooth, ready now - 6/10 Reserve Chardonnay - 6/10 Cabernet Sauvignon was smooth, notes of vanilla, good finish - 7/10 Barbara had a peppery finish, drink now, good - 7/10 Zinfandel had a peppery, sweet taste with a finish that was too strong on alcohol - 6/10 Overall, this is a laid back venue with a great view. It is refreshing to see a vintner take on the challenge of brewing, and while I appreciate the bravery, perhaps they should stick to wine making... There is some hope there. read more

I was here for the 2011 Barrel Tasting and was sad I didnt get to try any of the brews also. Darn! I am not sure why no one was working the beer tastings table but we were here for about an hr and no one came to work the table. The view was great, pretty pond and really peaceful area. Anyways the wine was great, it is at this winery I learned how to say Meritage correctly. It is Meritage like 'heritage'....who knew?? Their Meritage-like Meriticious wine was smooth and delicious. I was in a wedding here. The view from the deck is outstanding. The reception room doesn't look like much, but once it was decorated for the wedding it was beautiful. Mind you the winery does not supply or do any of the decorations. I'm not a wine drinker but they have beer too. I tried their red and it was quite good. There is only a swamp cooler in the reception room and it was a hot day so it was pretty warm. The parking is not ideal for a big wedding. The website says there is room for 100 cars. I am note sure where they are talking about. There is a dirt lot, with no lines, and no indication of how to park for optimal space. Parking was definitely a problem. Other than that is was a lovely place and a lovely wedding. read more

Pros: beautiful view, wine is decent, and good case specials. Cons: no longer free to taste. The tasting fee is $15 for 8 wines. It was a busy day and we got about half to 3/4 way through the tasting when the rude lady pouring yelled to the room that they were not doing any more tasting. We did not get to finish the tasting and it was only 4pm when they close at 5. She was very short and irritable and looking at past reviews it appears this has literally been an issue for years! Why would you not do something about this if so many people are having a problem with someone. It is enough to lose customers and have people not come back. In addition, when they stopped doing tasting we decided to try a glass of the sangria. They ran out while serving us and only gave a 3/4 pour but still charged full price! Honestly as nice a day as we were having I left here extremely frustrated and will not return. I will also be sure to let anyone know to skip this winery and go literally anywhere else. read more
