We had gone through a lot with my dad before he passed away and so we knew what we wanted and what we didn't. Unfortunately, the informal network we used for my dad didn't have women caregivers so we were back to to square one. After doing a lot of research with the local senior center and online we called For Papa's Sake, which is based out of the town next to where my mom lives. From the very first phone call I suspected we had gotten lucky. After a couple of calls and some group discussion between me, my mom and a For Papa's Sake senior person we decided we'd try them out. And am I glad we did. They listened to my mom's and my requests, likes, dislikes, deal-breakers etc. and they never batted an eye. They did say it might take a bit longer than usual (given our needs) to find the right care giver, but they called back in less than 5 days and we had a care giver within 10 days to 2 weeks of that 1st main discussion. That care giver has worked out so well. It has really improved our lives and I can go days without worrying about my mom...what a relief. That's what For Papa's Sake provides: relief! If you are looking for an alternative to a nursing home or aged care facility or whatever you want to call it, For Papa's Sake really cares and I would encourage you to give them a call. They have worked out great for us and I would not recommend them for something so important if they weren't doing a great job.

(Sorry to break your 5-star streak, Sylvie!) The cost is reasonable, and the shift hours are more flexible than other home help agencies. Sylvie was always responsive to any question or concern. When I contacted her with an urgent need for 24-hour care on short notice, she made a herculean effort to fill all the time slots, and came through for us. The agency seems to be highly selective in the caregivers they choose. Not only were the helpers generally more experienced than one finds in other agencies, they also appeared to be well-trained, resourceful, and highly intelligent. My mother has a long history of hostility toward home caregivers, and she did not like all of these caregivers either (although she did click with one of them, and there were a few others she probably could have come to like, given more time). However, I found all of them extremely kind, competent, and capable. My only issue was that some of them did leave a bit of a mess behind and disturbed my mom's impeccable arrangements of linens and other belongings somewhat. A minor matter, and partly my fault, for not leaving better instructions on how to find what they needed. Highly recommended.

Shola explained clearly what they could and could not do for my sister, what their schedule could be, what the rates were. Before plans were finalized, I also got a call from Jonathan Wishnick, the owner -- this truly is a business where the owners know what is going on and care about their clients. When Senior Helpers went to meet my sister, they called back with some concerns about her situation of which I had been unaware -- thanks to them, we were able to resolve those problems and now my sister is thriving. For two months we have had a lovely lady named Sara going to my sister for three hours each day. Now that my sister is in better health she will have a visit only once a week. My sister loves Sara's visits. I'm not sure if I can say enough about how grateful I am to Senior Helpers. I was terrified when I learned that my sister had been hospitalized, that she was sent home unable to care for herself -- and I was thousands of miles away unable to help. I almost cannot believe that there could be a "business" that can step in and fill the place of family, taking care of my sister with such dedication and kindness. I am eternally grateful!

I was referred to HomeWell Care Services in Lake Forest and spoke with the owner, Ines Eisner, MD, PhD, who immediately grasped our situation and offered a viable plan. I was impressed by her professionalism, knowledge, and sensitivity and felt like I was speaking with a personal friend. Ines visited my husband at rehab, and then met me at our home to inspect the setting and offer suggestions to facilitate recovery. On the morning of my husband's discharge, Ines met us at the Whitehall and introduced us to our lovely new caregiver, Noreen, whom I soon referred to as our "Guardian Angel." Noreen moved into our home for two weeks, assisting my husband with all of his needs on the road to full recovery while simultaneously helping me around the house. Rehabilitation impacts not only the patient, but the entire family. Noreen was invaluable, maintaining a very positive and cheerful attitude -- she was tireless and couldn't do enough.
