Fun experience especially with Seattle city backdrop in the distance and availability to row over to gas works park. The process was simple: pay $18/hr, guides provide you jackets, how-to's if you've never kayaked before, and the kayak itself. The only thing I did not like was how expensive it is for this activity. No line--we were out on the water in about 5 minutes. We managed to kayak all the way to Gasworks and back within one hour (as two young, reasonably fit people). Kinda hard to rate non food places for me because I don't know what constitutes a 4 or 5 star. Lets just say 4 star is a thing I'd do again, but not regularly. 5 star is something that I'd want to do a lot. But I'm not sure what that 5 star item would be... I went paddleboarding for the first time here right before summer started and it was probably around 75 degrees that day at 4pm. Turned out to be warm enough! I thought it would be chillier since it's water activities, but granted I didn't fall into the water, it was fine! When I see people doing this, it looks super easy, but then I think about it, I'm like that's hard! It turned out to be something in between. You get a life jacket from this place, safety! I got used to standing/balance on the board pretty easily, but paddling was a lot of work from a standing position. When you get tired, you can sit down, and it's like kayaking haha. Lake Union is also a great spot for this. It's generally pretty calm waters, except when you come across fancy boats going by. I went for just shy of 2 hours, which was good enough for me. I bought a groupon so I think it was $15 for the two hours. Regularly $15/hour. They were able to accommodate a group of roughly 10 just fine. Parking around SLU is a bit tricky. There's street parking, but I bet it's probably for only up to 2 hours ($1.50-$2/hr I'm guessing). There's a parking lot right outside of this place, but it's probably more expensive per hour. SOOooo...come on a Sunday when there are no street parking restrictions. read more

Other Pros: Beginner friendly, which was good because I was with Mom (an inexperience kayaker). They provided a large waterproof bag for personal belongings. I've rented kayaks or paddle boards from here for the past 3 years. The location is great. You can park for free on the street on Sundays or pay for parking in the lot. There's a couple of restaurants nearby if you're hungry before or after your water activity. The service is great from all of their workers, and they're very friendly. During COVID, they only take reservations in advance so make sure that you call a few days in advance to make a reservation especially for nice sunny days! read more

Really liked this place for renting paddle boards and kayaks! Our 5-person group went together and had zero wait on a beautiful sunny, Sunday afternoon! I liked their system for getting checked in and getting on the water, which was very streamlined. The life jackets and oars seemed clean and in good shape. I had a great experience on paddle boards. Only minor complaint is that our friends that went out on a tandem kayak had a hard time steering. I noticed half way through our trip that the Moss bay staff hadn't helped them to drop their rudder (yet they were told to use their feet to steer, which would only work with the rudder in the water). Back on shore, I noticed that they didn't drop the rudder for anyone launching on kayaks. Rudders are not strictly needed for steering (you can use oars, but it takes a bit more work in tandem kayaks). The conflicting advice on using feet to steer led to confusion, so it would be nice to provide a bit more staff training to make sure instructions match whether or not rudders are put down for the kayaks. If you are renting kayaks from them and having trouble steering, take a peek behind you and ask if they can set you up if you're not sure how to put the rudder down yourself (by pulling on the cord behind you). All in all, staff was very friendly and efficient, and I definitely plan to be back! read more

We rented two kayaks and two paddle boards this week and had a great time! We showed up right when they opened at 10 AM and were out on the lake within 15 minutes. The service was great, all the kids that work here are super friendly and cheery. My daughter had never kayaked before and I'm no expert, so I do wish the gal could have explained maneuvering a bit more - but she figured it out after some frustration. Rented paddle boards from here on a clear sunny day. We waited almost 30 minutes for 4 paddle boards, but it was well worth it. Kayaks seemed to be more available and therefore had a shorter waitlist. It took less than 5 minutes to get out on the water once we were called down to the docks. My husband and I decided to try paddle boarding after work on a sunny Seattle day. The price was very decent ($15/hr) and there was also a groupon deal going on. The equipment (boards, paddle, life jackets & dry bag) were all in great shape. The staff was helpful, made it easy and we loved that there weren't too many restrictions other than be safe and responsible on the water. They even allow children as long as parents are comfortable and also allow expecting moms (I'm 29 weeks pregnant). I would suggest going during off-peak hours. Lake Union tends to get busy with boat and seaplane traffic. The water is a little merky but not too bad given its a lake. SLU park is a great place to paddle to and make a pit stop to sun bath or swim. For a longer trek, Gasworks Park is a doable paddle. Just simply paddling around the lake and taking in the scenery was relaxing and enjoyable! We will definitely be back on the next sunny day! read more

I've been to Moss Bay a couple of times now for kayaking. They have everything you need, and it's completely okay if you're a beginner! I'm glad my friend checked Groupon before we arrived! Definitely helps to save a bit and share the cost. I've always done the two person kayak (share the paddling effort!) The guys that run this place are always super friendly and helpful. I've been here several times now and have referred all my friends to this rental spot. There is plenty of parking off of Fairview and the side street adjacent to the dock where Moss Bay is and they have plenty of kayaks and SUPs to satisfy your paddling needs. My friend and I took out some kayaks two hours before closing and traversed back and forth across Lake Union looking at boathouses..then we decided on a last minute push to the Mountlake Cut in the second hour and we were on a major time crunch to get back. I got back first just past closing to apologize to the guy working there and to wait for my friend to paddle her kayak in - he was super understanding and didn't make us feel bad about being late. Great location in SLU. Plenty of parking (nearby pay lots). You can rent kayaks and paddle boards here. The place starts getting super busy around noon. I went around 1 pm with a large group (who all wanted paddle boards) and it took over 40 minutes (after we signed up and got in line) for enough boards to be available. People who had much smaller groups 2-4 people got to go quicker. People who wanted kayaks went out right away. Once you get to the dock, you get your life jacket, drop off your stuff in their cubbies and can grab a waterproof bag for your belongings (all included with your rental). After that they put you on a board and you're off. You get to go at our own leisure and when you're ready to go back you can do just that. After you get back that's when you go back to the rental stand and "checkout" where they see how long you were out and charge you based on that. It is also right next to a restaurant with an outdoor deck which makes it nice to grab food/drink before or after. read more

We came here of course for Kayaking. It is located on the south side of the Lake Union. Very easy access by public transportation or car. We actually came here by bike. It is a very calm and quiet place. The rental is very reasonable, $16 for single Kayak and $24 for double. The scenery on the lake is absolutely beautiful. The water is calm and cool and is also great for swimming! You can see the Needles right in front of you. Highly recommended for people like outdoor activity. This is a great place to rent kayaks or SUPs. You walk up to the little hut to rent (leave your drivers license with them) and then head out to the dock. They put the kayak or SUP in the water for you and give you a quick lesson and you're on your way. Really nice and helpful staff. Totally hassle free. Beautiful day in the PNW so kayaking seemed like a great day time activity to try out. The staff is really nice and friendly. They make sure to answer any questions you have and explain the basics of kayaking and they give you some tips too. Pricing isn't too bad either. Less than $20 an hour.. not sure if that's expensive as this was our first time. Kayaking itself is fun, but the struggle was definitely real. My sister and I did a two person kayak and while it was fun, it was hard syncing our paddles together. Perfect arm workout too. I'm pretty sure I'll feel the burn tomorrow morning. FYI; kayak in a swimsuit. Unfortunately, my sister and I came unprepared and lets just say.. I was sitting in a pool of water in the kayak and my jean shorts were SOAKED. First experience kayaking was with Moss Bay last week and it was a great one. First, I did a little research and I found 3 rental facilities around Lake Union. One that was closer to me didn't have as good reviews but I gave them a shot bc they were closer. I gave them a call every hour all morning bc I wanted to get some quick info with it being my first time. No answer, straight to voicemail. So I decided to try Moss Bay. I gave them a call and got through to them on the second try. They were very kind and made me feel super comfortable from the phone all the way to when I showed up. They understood that it was my first time and sensation be to that. The price was very reasonable, $17 for first hour for single kayak then prorated after that every 15 minutes. One hour was enough time to get from South Lake Union to Gas Works Park and back in a big Loop for my first time being out there. A couple of notes, they give you a dry bag that's great to keep your things. There's a place for your shoes on the dock. And a life vest is included. I ended up going back Friday w my wife for a double kayak. The single is a lot more wobbly but you don't have to coordinate with another paddler. Double is a little easier if you get timing down with your partner. Double doesn't seem to ever flip over because it's so much heavier. My wife doesn't know how to swim and she did the double w me no problem. Only reason for the 4 is that they didn't do any kind of adjustments to my kayak for the fitting or explanation on how it was supposed to feel. I don't think my single was set right bc it was very uncomfortable. I could have used a tad more instruction. But can't complain, it was a great experience and I'll definitely be back. This is a great location to kayak from Lake Union. We had a living social deal so it made it a great deal for the couple hours we spent on the lake. The scenery is great as you can see the city skyline plus also the Gaswork park area. The only negative is that if you have never kayaked before they do not give much instruction of how to do it. Good thing I have kayaked before, but this was my gf first time. They should have at least instructed in how to row with your paddle. They do not take reservations here as it is first come first serve. When we arrived we had to wait about 10 minutes because they had rented out all the two-seat kayaks. I wouldn't say this is the place to kayak if you're looking for something super quiet and peaceful, as there are lots of things going on when you're kayaking here - you're sharing the water with little planes taking off and landing, paddle-boarders, jet-skis, speed boats and duck boats and crew boats and everything in between. Having said that.. I really enjoyed kayaking here. Great views of Seattle and the Space Needle. Everything was easy, from getting in to getting out. We went yesterday (Saturday) when the weather was really nice and waited maybe ~30 mins for a double kayak (we arrived at 2 PM just FYI). Should you bring your phone to take photos? I would have.
