Beautiful winery! The view from the winery is absolutely gorgeous. Without a doubt, this is the best view from a winery in the Charlottesville area. I am kicking myself for having lived in Charlottesville for 4 years and never visiting Moss Vineyards. My expectations for wine in Virginia are typically low, but, as an added bonus, we loved their Cabernet Sauvignon. We will definitely visit Moss Vineyards again and I'm looking forward to trying more of their wines. read more

Hands down the best view of any winery in Charlottesville, and possibly NoVa. Really, it's that nice. Your extra long drive up the gravel road is rewarded by open unobstructed views of the valley of rolling mountain ridgelines. An epic spot for a winery tasting room. The property is very well kept, and the buildings have great architecture...as one would expect from an architect that designed everything. The winery had a few folks enjoying the outdoor covered areas as we arrived, a very welcome sight, and the tasting room was empty, which made for super quick and pleasant service. We even saw one of the owners out pruning the vines as we arrived. The work never stops at a winery. Unfortunately that's where the positive comments come to an end. It's just sad that the wine was not good. Really...not good. I really hate leaving negative comments, look at my other reviews, but the wines earned the 2* rating. As I've mentioned before in previous reviews, I primarily review the wine first, venue second. 2.5* is probably a more accurate rating. Since we had another winery to visit later in the day, we split our tasting. That's always a nice option if a winery allows. My wife rarely, if ever, wants to dump wine in a tasting, but I had to finished her portions. She didn't even want to grab a glass to sit out and enjoy the stellar view. I can't remember the last time that happened. Even the best view in the area couldn't get me to go for a higher score. I'd like to say it was just one bottle that was open too long, but when all of the wines weren't to our liking, there's something else happening here. The rose tasted like straight apple juice with an almost brown coloring in the bottle and glass. Even their boldest red, a Bordeaux style blend, which we normally love, wasn't up to par. It's not minerality or earthiness, it's just not a clean tasting wine. Plenty of folks will enjoy their wines, and I can't mention enough how the drive is worth the view, but it was just not our cup of tea. read more

Moss is named after it's over-achieving owner, who not only is the winemaker, but a painter and the architect who designed their tasting building. 9 acres of vine, and maybe 1,000 cases/year (so definitely on the smaller side). The view is quite lovely (and definitely worth the rocky road getting there). And Jason my server was a superb host, who somehow managed to service us as well as the crowd that (thankfully) left not long after my arrival. My 4 stars is mostly due to him. What I tried: 2015 Viognier: Honey or apricot notes; couldn't tell which 2014 Rose: Strawberry notes, and nice dry finish 2013 Vino Rosso (Red blend): I got some dark fruit, especially plumb and dark cherries. 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon: Earthy and very tanic 2014 Architella Riserva: Very dark but surprisingly smooth. The drive to this vineyard is up a dirt road which feels like you are going to the middle of nowhere... Then you arrive to a very nice contemporary building and amazing area. Then you turn around and the view is stunning. We showed up a bit early before the vineyard opened and Barry the owner invited us down to his barreling room and we go to learn about his wine and his experiences in the business. He was very nice and then he began our win trying experience. After not being very satisfied with the wines in VA this place ended up having a nice selection of wines and most of our group liked most of the wines. We ended up buying a case and shipping it to our home in Florida. Barry and his wife truly care about their business and even mentioned he throws batches out when he doesn't like the flavor which is something very unique. Moss Vineyards is a cozy little winery facing the eastern front of the Appalachians.We visited recently on a Sunday afternoon for a wine tasting. The road in is a well maintained single lane gravel road. I was excited about visiting Moss Vineyards for the first time - due to all the positive reviews on Yelp. Our new favorite place. And after 190 Virginia wineries, that's saying something. Here's why: 1. The view is killer. A single-track gravel road carries you up to an imposing 2 1/2 story towering white edifice with a wall of windows looking out over picnic tables and vineyards sloping down the valley. Down below, the red-roofed tasting room is dominated by floor-to-ceiling windows framing bright red Adirondack chairs pointed toward one of the most spectacular, tapestried views in Virginia Wine Country, especially if you're lucky enough, as we were, to visit in the fall. Holy mother of wine. 2. The wine is awesome. You may have noticed that we hardly ever comment on wine, for a variety of reasons. Winemakers change. Tastes differ. We aren't Masters of Wine. Plus, winemakers can get a little touchy. You know how it is. But Moss Vineyards...yowza. On nine acres, owner Barry Moss focuses on vinifera, including Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, plus some Viognier and the rare-for-Virginia Vermentino. The very small production features several stellar wines, chief among them the impressive Architeturra, a Cab Sauv, Merlot, Petit Verdot blend. The views alone make this place a must go to. Google maps had a bit of a hard time finding it, which make sense, it's on the side of a mtn in the middle of nowhere. But if you find it, you'll be amazed. Oh and the wine, the wine is very good, I'm by no means a wine expert, I do enjoy my wine, these were very tasty, the white (only one) was my fav, however a tad pricey on bottles. Heck they could serve me a box of wine and I'd enjoy it with the views they have. read more

The evening reception we attended here was perfect in every way, especially the wine. The Viognier was my favorite. The setting and the views are amazing and the layout of the venue (nice patio area, huge windows, etc.) ensures that the guests will be able to enjoy it no matter what the season or weather. I was concerned about parking because a member of our group uses a wheelchair, but there is an easy drop off spot in front so that's not an issue. It was evident that the staff and management went above and beyond to make sure the guests enjoyed a festive and memorable evening. 10+ read more

We were in the area looking for another winery and saw a beautiful house on a hill, with huge chimneys that stood out and as we got closer, saw the flag and sign for Moss Vineyards. We drove up their very long driveway to find that it took us to this beautiful house on the hill! Upon entering we looked back out at the views they have of the hills and valleys below and were amazed by the beauty! What a picture-perfect place to enjoy a nice wine! We were greeted by the owner and she gave us great service and explanation during the tasting. She even gave us a vertical tasting of two similar wines, but different years. This was a great idea, as we noted subtle differences, but they were still both amazing! The tasting room, restroom, grounds, etc were all very clean and well-taken care of. We can't wait to go back during the summer months and experience this beautiful vineyard again!! read more

First, the positive. The venue is stunning - rolling hills, mountains, with many different sitting areas to enjoy the gprgeous views. They have obviously put money into the winery itself with beautiful buildings and landscaping. However, they so need to invest in better winemaking. They have very limited offerings and the wines are not tasty or balanced. We make the trek to Moss so bought a bottle of the Viognier. It is very tart and had white residue chunks floating in the bottle. I could not drink it. We inquired as to the pariculate and the wine tender advised that this is "common in Viognier" and he gets this question a lot. He offered to get the manager but being Father's Day we did not want to cause a scene. We were disappointed they did not offer to refund the bottle as it was undrinkable. The last two trips we have made to Moss we have literally been the only guests on this expansive property. The quality of the wine is keeping folks away. Apparently they have won medals for their cider so possibly concentrate on that endeavor. If and until the wine is improved we will not be back. We would love to return so we hope that happens! read more

One of the Monticello Wine Trail's best kept secrets, with inventive wines, a gorgeous view, and an engaging tasting experience. I must have driven by Moss at least a view times before taking the gravel road to one of the most underrated vineyards outside of Charlottesville. Don't let the modest driveway fool you (if you're using a GPS don't be surprised if it tells you to turn where there is no driveway - just continue on that road about a half mile and look for the signs); after driving through some gorgeous woods, the grounds open up on a beautiful vineyard and winery on the side of a mountain. At the top, you are treated to one of the best views of the mountains I have ever seen at any winery. With plenty of outdoor seating, you're invited to sit down with a glass of wine and look out onto the landscape. Moss is far away enough from any major roads that you'll hear almost complete silence. It's one of the most peaceful wine tastings you're ever going to have. A beautiful view and new facilities mean little, of course, if the wine isn't any good. Fortunately, Moss Vineyard's embarrassment of riches continue. For around $7 you are able to try 7-8 different wines, including two vertical tastings of the same wine from different years (the only winery I can think of that does this). You start with the crisp and refreshing Viognier, full body with floral tones. Next to the Rose, the perfect summer wine that's a little dryer than most other Roses I've tasted, which is for the better as I am turned off my sweet wines. After moving past the soft and tasty Cabernet Franc, you move on to your vertical tastings of the 2012 and 2013 Vino Rosso Bordeaux blend and the 2010 and 2013 Architettura Reserva. Of the two (or four), I loved the 2013 Vino Rosso - softer, smoother with a complex red berry taste. The Architettura has a bit more of a darker earthy taste that many red drinkers will love. Being able to try different years and taste the difference provides a very original and memorial tasting experience. You'd be surprised how the taste varies from year to year. Our pourer Jared was excellent, engaging with us and asking us for our own thoughts rather than just reading from a script. Overall, this may be my favorite Winery on the Monticello wine trail. If you're a red drinker this is a must visit for you - but really if you enjoy good company, excellent wines, and an unbelievable view, you'll find lots to love at Moss Vineyards. read more

Driving up to this location, and then partaking in the wine, you can tell why this winery has five stars across the board. This is one of the best wineries in the state. Barry Moss, the owner and winemaker, himself conducted our tastings on a misty Saturday morning, and is a generous and entertaining host. The wines are simply outstanding, and the prices are right. The covered outdoor seating area doubles as a live music venue, and they hope to get some amazing acts here - not the usual basic cover bands you find at so many other wineries in the state. Think rock legends (although some would call them "has beens" now...) The driveway is a steep, shorter version of the infamous road leading up to Stone Mountain Vineyards, which is not far from Moss. But I love the view better at Moss - you're just a little above the tree line. With the green of late April and the mist rising off of mountains, you could take a photo, post it on Facebook, and refer to Scotland or Ireland, and folks would believe you're there. The Architettura is as good as the reds you'll find for $35 and more at Barboursville. Perhaps time for Barboursville to rethink its pricing model? This location is an across the board winner. read more

This is my favorite vineyard in Virginia. I live in NY but I've had it shipped here on numerous occasions. The property is also very beautiful- I have been several times. In the mountains of the Shenandoah Valley - you will enjoy an unbelievable view while you sip on decadent wine. I heard they have new additions to the property - an open air building outside with a wood oven. I cant wait to make it down there again. read more

The one nice thing about this place was it had a view. We've been to many wineries and were very disappointed and unimpressed with this place. The amount of wine that they give you for the tasting was SO tiny. My husband called it 'microscopic'. Barely enough to wet the tongue. The wine pourer didn't engage at all, didn't carry a conversation, said one sentence about each wine and that was it and there was only one other person there. We were in and out of there within 5 minutes. We've had much better wines for a third of the price. We will not be going back. read more

Wow! What a gorgeous facility. I wasn't expecting such a modern winery but this exceeded all my desires for what a winery should be. Everything feels very new and clean, and we had a great tasting here on a Saturday afternoon. The wines were delicious and we had a great time chatting with our hostess while we tasted. There were other groups that came in during our tasting, but we were always well taken care of and accommodated. If we weren't planning on visiting more wineries today we certainly would have bought a bottle and sat outside on the lovely lawn chairs while we drank. Without specifics I will say I walked in carrying my Va Wine In my Pocket book (like a winery guide to Va) and the owner jumped on me asking if I was a "bride to be". I told her no and she pointed out that she saw my spiral book and thought it was a wedding planning book. Immediately everything went down hill from there. Neglected is an understatement. Out of the 7 wines I was able to try 3 before I called it quits due to lack of service. Because I wasn't wedding venue shopping I wasn't important. Views were indeed gorgeous. The wines for what I was able to try weren't anything special. The service was downright pathetic. If you're reading this and Moss is on your list of wineries you want to check out don't let me sway you; just walk in and announce "this would be a great wedding venue for me" and I bet you will have the best service ever and a really enjoyable time. read more

Came here on a Saturday afternoon in the spring with a group of girlfriends and had a great time! The property is far away and cell reception is lacking but don't worry - they have free wifi. The buildings are beautiful and they are in the process of building a small event space on property as well which will be awesome once it's complete. Their wines were good and I highly recommend the viognier. read more

My girlfriend had never done a wine tasting before and I'd visited Moss Vineyards as a wedding photographer, but never had the opportunity to enjoy the wines. So, on an unseasonably warm January day we decided to check it out. Moss is owned and operated by a husband wife team whose passion for their wines is unmatched. As we had our tasting (everything was delicious, but my favorite was the viognier) Mrs. Moss told us all about the vineyard and how/why they picked the land. After the tasting we ended up sharing a glass on the patio overlooking an incredible view of the valley between the blue ridge mountains. When we got back to the car we noticed we had a flat tire. Without hesitation Mr. Moss pulled out a jack and changed it out for my spare tire in minutes. The whole day was a wonderful experience and I can't recommend Moss Vineyards enough! read more

Was a participant in a wedding there. While the wedding party was IN LINE AND READY to walk down the aisle, the wife of the owner came out and told us that since her husband had to tell guests where to park, there would be an extra fee. I was shocked by her rudeness. She was just as unaccommodating Friday night during the rehearsal. She snapped at several members of the wedding party. She made us feel very unwelcome and a burden. Barry, the owner, was very kind, but his behavior just couldn't outweigh hers. I am sorry to write this, because the venue is absolutely gorgeous. But when you are paying that kind of money, you expect to be made to feel welcome. read more

I just thought Wedding Couples might want to be aware that this venue does not let you conduct your Rehearsal until 7:00 p.m. when the tasting room closes. Other Vineyards seems to manage both guests and their high-paying Wedding clients. If this were me, the late hour would be a deal breaker as it leaves no time for a Rehearsal Dinner ... besides the fact that any commercial eating establishment is not a short drive away. Perhaps the owners could be persuaded to let couples have the Rehearsal earlier in the day Friday, though, as some other Vineyards do when they have a wedding back-to-back (but certainly not just for the convenience of a few patrons who might show up on a Friday). That is my 2 cents. Perhaps for you, the stunning scenery outweighs this monkey wrench. read more

Beautiful venue and great wine with amazing potential for weddings. Barry is great and accommodating, the event center and pavilion are gorgeous. But there was a total lack of communication the whole entire year leading up to the wedding that then resulted in Ellen demanding various things the night before that were not communicated prior to, even though the venue was booked over a year in advance. She was very unwelcoming and made it seem that maybe they just aren't ready for large events yet. I was stoked for working with owners of an amazing venue that seemed laid back and accommodating the entire year prior to the Friday before but then was greatly overstressed and overwhelmed friday evening and saturday morning by Ellen's demands and lack of welcoming attitude. Not what a bride wants the weekend of her wedding. I would recommend she not be around for the events or she communicate all of her requirements more effectively the months leading up to the wedding. So much potential here, just need better execution, maybe in a few years they will be capable of hosting weddings more effectively. read more
