First of all, the 2-3 miles leading to the winery is up the mountain on a primitive road. It's def part of thr experience, but plz be prepared. If you're someone who is scared of country roads or heights, might not be your jam. The property is absolutely stunning. The views!! The wine was delicious and they did offer a charcuterie board with variations. They also offer pizza on weekends, I believe. It's a huge lodge, seating inside outside patio with upstairs and downstairs options. Everyone was super friendly and it had a locals only vibe, felt Tucker away and private. But you get there and there's people there, so it's a known gem in Dyke, VA. A must see if you're in the area! read more

The view!! We brought a picnic to enjoy on the deck, with a bottle of their deliciously refreshing Chardonnay. There's also plenty of seating in the tasting room inside, if the weather doesn't cooperate. The road to the Vineyard is unpaved, narrow and bumpy but the challenge is well worth it to enjoy such a beautiful and serene place. I highly recommend either a 4WD or AWD vehicle and note that low to the ground vehicles will scrape. read more

My brother and sister-in-law have membership in this vineyard. It is two hours from Alexandria, Virginia. Nestled in the Shenandoah Valley, the ride alone is worth the trip in the fall. We got to enjoy the annual members party throne by the Stonewall Vineyard yearly. Live music was fabulous. Really enjoyed the dancing. Wine tasting all day. They barbequed a pig and served with all the trimmings. Absolutely delicious!!! The staff was accomodating in every way. The Petit Verdot was one of my favorites. read more

Getting here is an adventure. This winery sits on top of what feels like a literal mountain in the Shenandoah. If you plan on going here, just know and plan to make sure that your vehicle can get up steep hills, round curves with steep ledges and no barriers, etc. The winery itself is great. Very nice people and staff. The wines are very good as well. The only food option they have are charcuterie and cheese boards. The views were absolutely stunning overlooking the valley (probably the best view I've ever seen at any Virginia winery). 4 stars only because getting into the winery could be tough for some others that are not equipped with the right vehicle. read more

We went for their annual party for wine club members as guests with my brother. It took a bit to get there but it is in a most beautiful setting! It's located up in the Shenandoah mountains and has amazing views! The wine was wonderful as was the atmosphere and the staff. They served a delicious meal and had a fun band for the event. I don't think they serve food normally but would definitely go there for wine tasting and drinking whenever I'm back in the area. read more

STUNNING! I have been wanting to come visit since we moved to RVA in March. My mom came to visit so i decided this would be a great time for a visit. AMAZING Views, Super fun drive up the mountain to the vineyards, Adorable boxer puppies greeted us as we walked in :), Wine slushies and Wine flights, New Deck with mountain views and fresh mountain air, we had a wonderful time. One thing I would comment on - My mom and I are short women so when we were sitting at tables we could not see the mountains over the railings. This little vineyard sits on top of a mountain- literally. And getting there is a challenge to say the least- you have to drive on a one lane steep mountain road. We made it up in our sedan so most people should be able to drive up though if it rains may be tricky. But the vineyard at the top of the mountain is beautiful! The wines are excellent and interestingly the grapes are grown right outside the tasting room. I would definitely go again. read more

Thank you fellow Yelpers that i read reviews before deciding which vineyard we were going to visit during our cousins weekend in Gordonsville. Please do not be scared away from the reviews regarding the drive up the mountain to get to the vineyard. Yes, it is a one lane dirt road with winding turns, what i recommend is that you DO NOT DRIVE UP THERE WITH A SEDAN... A SMALL SUV OR ANY SUV IS A MUST. We had a rental .... a Ford Excursion... yes the "bus", and we got up there without a hitch. there are two turns on the road that would be challenging if two vehicles are meeting up(coming up and down at the same time.... but that's it... just go slow. It is worth the drive, the Views from the top while sipping some delicious wine, is BREATHTAKING!. The staff... super friendly.... we ordered pizzas and a cheese platter... the pizza was actually very good. You can bring your own picnic and your dogs..... A MUST GO!!!! A group of three of us visited Stone Mountain Vineyards this past Sunday (5-14-2017). I followed the recommendation on their web site - of NOT attempting to input the address into my GPS or any Maps apps. The road up the mountain - is as others have stated - narrow and steep in places - and you need to pay careful attention to driving - as there are some steep drop offs with no guard rail. If you encounter a vehicle coming the other direction - there are some sections where backing up to find a place to allow the other vehicle to pass would be extremely difficult and challenging. We encountered this very scenario on our way down the mountain. Fortunately, the other car was very close to a wide spot and so he backed down a bit and pulled in to it - to allow my full size Ford F-150 4x4 to pass by. The tasting room is gorgeous! Lots of hardwoods and lots of space to sit and hang out! Upon entering the building - we were immediately greeted by Chance - a cute, friendly winery dog! We also met the owners who chatted with us and gave us a lot of background and history on the winery and the area. Very nice folks! We first did the entire wine tasting - then purchased a bottle of the Cab Franc to take out on the deck and enjoy with a picnic lunch we had brought. We asked first if it was permissible to bring our own food in - they told us no problem. While out on the deck, Chance visited constantly in order to inspect the area around our table for any food particles that had fallen, and then of course instantly hoover them into his bottomless gullet! The views from the deck were beautiful! At 1,780 feet above sea level - Stone Mountain is the second highest winery in Virginia - according to Jim - one of the owners. I will return some time soon! Absolutely stunning views! The drive is a bit twisty on a gravel road that can become washed out if it rains, but the views at the end are definitely worth it. Stone Mountain Vineyards have the best view from their winery out of any of the wineries I have been to in the area so far. The tasting room leans into the rustic wooden cabin aesthetic and there is plenty of seating outdoors to admire the view from. In addition, the Viogner and Rose were as good as any that I have tried in Virginia. I would highly recommend Stone Mountain Vineyards and I know that I will make a return visit soon. read more

While there was a thick layer of fog completely concealing the wonderful view that brought us here in the first place, I loved y experience here. The inside is socially distanced with a bunch of tables scattered around a beautiful wood-labeled interior. There was live music and the wines were delicious. Can you say adventure. Forget the wine how about the journey to get to it!. The absolute unexpected pleasure of traversing the the climb to reach the winery was mind-blowing. My fiance braved the drive in our SUV on the windy, twisty, curvy, steep, wet, beautiful scenic road to the top of the mountain....with friends hanging on in the back seat. It was epic. I've done Jeep excursions in the islands and gone muddin in the bogs of NC...this rates above that on sheer unexpected fun. Wine is good, venue is beautiful, and the views are SPECTACULAR. ....getting there however is EXTREMELY challenging. The winery is located up a mountainside which is only accessible via a steep, and frankly scary, gravel mountain road. While the road is state maintained, it is VERY treacherous, with uneven terrain, hairpin turns, single-lanes, and no guardrails to prevent an inexperienced motorist from careening down a steep slope. And don't even get me started on how nervous I got when trying to let a car coming the opposite direction pass you. I understand that the state may be slow to make improvements to it, but I think putting a sign at the foot of the gravel road warning drivers about what they are about to embark on would be prudent, and frankly, advising people without off-road ready cars to be extra cautious. The three stars are for what I perceive to be a somewhat passive, and perhaps even dismissive, approach to advising approaching customers about the journey they must embark on to reach your facility. read more

Visited over Memorial Day weekend (yes this is a late review :) and was blown away by both the place and the wine. Heck, I'd live there if I could; I loved the wooden cabin tasting room almost as much as the wine itself. Favorites were the Bacon Hollow Petit Verdot (does it go well with bacon? I'll have to try!), the Meritage, and the 2010 Merlot Reserve. Honestly everything was good, but those were the standouts. I also lucked out that my servers were kind enough to allow me to try a few wines that normally aren't on the serving menu. Their vineyards have some excellent slopes and a 1700 ft altitude. And just when I thought I couldn't like them any more, they told me Gabriele Rausse - one of VA's premiere wine makers - was the one who helped plant them. Stone Mountain is a trek to get to; if you're afraid of narrow roads this place might be scary. But please go, it's worth the trip! I'm already planning a trip during the fall so I can enjoy the view again. read more

I am giving this five star for the view although they rate this across the board. The unobstructed view of miles of valley and mountains is incredible and alone worth the trip. We loved the building itself. There was ample seating inside and outside which is unusual for most vineyards we have visited. You can also bring food which is unusual but their selection for food is limited to cheese boards. BUT to that point, we had Brie cheese with baguette and crackers. The bread and cheese were excellent with an exceptionally large portion of cheese. The price for what we got seemed way too low. We had leftovers. The wine was good. We only tried flights because we were driving. This vineyard is so worth the trip. Be forewarned though if you are nervous about driving on narrow mountain roads let some else drive. To get to this incredible view and great vineyard, you have to get up the mountain on a graded but unimproved road. Easy but not for people afraid of heights. I promise that you will not be disappointed if you make this effort. Lastly, the owners, Jim and Deanna were on site and exceptionally friendly. read more

Spectacular experience! If you let the "scary mountain drive" deter you from visiting this gem, you're certainly missing out. Margot was our wine hostess and did an excellent job. The wines surpassed our expectations; my cohort actually joined the wine club (he never does that!). Honestly one of the most stunning views I have seen at a winery in Virginia. This is absolutely a hidden gem in the Charlottesville area and well worth the visit. My photo does not do justice. The winery had plenty of space and was not overly crowded due to the location. Don't think the views alone are worth it? Don't stress-- the wine is also wonderful. They had a wide selection of wine choices and they were all delicious! I have visited multiple wineries in the Charlottesville region and this is my new favorite. My only word of warning? Take a sturdy vehicle and call for directions instead of blindly following your GPS! There are two routes for the mountain, both unpaved roads. However one is state maintained and easily navigated and the other is.... far more precarious. We took a four door sedan and we "made" it via the more precarious backroad but I wasn't sure in a few spots. read more

It is rare that I love all of the wines at a tasting, but I did love them here. I'm a red girl, but their selection of whites was amazing. Now....I do reccomend that if you visit, come in a jeep or some sort of vehicle that can handle rough gravel on the side of a cliff. The ride up was scary, but definitely an experience for my friends and I . I don't think we've ever prayed and laughed ever together but we did that day! But the view when you get to the top is amazing. Oh! Try the pizza if you get a chance! It makes everything a million times better. read more

The drive up to the vineyard is bumpy and steep but worth it!! Stone Mountain literally has the best view of any vineyard I've ever been to. It looks over lush green mountains that go on and on as far as you can see. I did the regular wine tasting. It was 10 dollars and worth it. Each wine was very good and the man doing our tasting was very attentive and knowledgeable. The tasting room is large and spacious with attractive furniture. We ordered a baguette with champagne cheddar. It was warm and delicious. It came with a side of grapes and chocolate. We sat on the deck and listened to live guitar music while enjoying the beautiful mountains and food. Do yourself a favor and visit this vineyard! read more

There are two ways up, the back way is "broke back Mountain" and unless you have a vehicle that is good for off roading & you're up for a adventure, DONT TAKE IT. As for my husband and I, we have a all wheel drive SUV & we were up for the adventure and it was terrifying but awesome. The 'front way' is grated and much easier of a drive, we took this way on the way down. I'm giving the winery a 4 because the red wine was good but not great. They definitely were stronger in the whites. Their wine slushes are fantastic & the view makes the trip up 110% worth it. It is incredible !! The food looked and smelled amazing but we didn't eat. We ventured up the hill to this winery late on a Saturday afternoon, around 4:15PM. They close at 5, but they still took their time to give us a great tasting experience and told us to go ahead and enjoy our wine there, even though they were closing soon. We ended buying several bottles and a bag of chips to enjoy there (they have Rt11 chips!!!). The view is AMAZING from their deck... one of the best in VA! We've been to nearly 200 wineries in VA and this ranks in the top 5! Yes, the drive up the hill can be a little scary, but if you stay on the road, you'll be just fine. And on the day we went, there were several families with kids there, so clearly others made it up the hill... you can too! read more

Holy Jesus wait until you see the road to get to this place. To call it a road is an EXTREME stretch of the definition. Goat path might be a better way to describe it. The vineyard is located on the Wineries of Virginia state map and since we were in the area and with nothing to do, we opted to visit here because it was the closest to the area we had rented a cabin at. You know you are in trouble when the car navigator basically tells you good luck - that's right, my navigator puts a big message on the screen "entering unknown area, use caution" Those bastards in Japan must have known that the "road" up to this place was about 3 feet wide - either that or the computer just couldn't compute how the road could go from sea level to 2400 feet in just a few hundred yards... After a bunch of tracking back and forth on rainy country roads, we found the turn off and started heading almost straight up. The pavement ended and from then on it was hard packed dirt and gravel. After a few more minutes spent in the car, sitting at an angle of 55-plus degrees and approaching a hairpin turn, my occupants started whining and getting nervous. There are no guardrails and you are literally looking over the edge of a cliff. Of course, it was raining and the fog was setting in- perfect. The road just keeps going up and up and there is no way to turn back or god forbid, if someone is coming down there is going to be a problem. After a lot of sweating and praying we made it - we found this place, parked and went in. Trust me, you will need a drink when you get up there. The owner is kind of a weenie. He reminded me of a stuck up stooge "I own a vineyard" was about the only thing he didn't say out loud. I made some jokes about that road and he was like no big deal- bullshit, he knows damn well that road is a bitch because on the back of the ball caps they sell it even says "how bout that road?" We met some people who were coming out as we were on the way in and everyone was laughing and joking about the road. That said, the wines are decent. The Pinot Grigio was very good and the others were ok. The ride down was better only because we could see more of what was coming but it was still unnerving at times. If you go, make damn sure you have good tires and brakes. Better yet, take your friends piece of shit pickup truck. read more

Don't be intimidated by the drive up there, it is not as arduous as everyone makes it seem, and the panoramic view of the area is well worth the trek! Go up early to beat the crowds and make sure you follow the directions posted on their website, not your GPS or mapquest! The winery is a rustic building built into the side of the mountain, with a spacious tasting room constructed in floor to ceiling hardwood. Two types of tastings are offered, a $5 - 11 wine and $7 - 15 wine tasting. We chose the $7 option to partake in Stone Mountain's reserve wines and easily left with a three pack of the Bacon Hollow Sunset, Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, and Twelve Barrels Meritage. You may want to pack a picnic lunch or some snacks as there is limited to no food options offered either at the vineyard or found in the surrounding area. read more

So I just read that Chris Breiner, the owner and winemaker of Stone Mountain Vineyards, died on Valentine's Day this year. No information on how he passed away but I am saddened by this. He was a little off-putting at first until I discovered his initial off-putting style was really dry-as-a-martini wit. He took me and other visitors down for a private tour of his wine cave a few years ago and became a totally different person. If you haven't been to Stone Mountain Vineyards (they will continue to be open to the public and make good wine), it's worth a trip up the face of a mountain (literally--although not recommended for those with vertigo). The winery view is the best in the Commonwealth (just you, your fellow wine lovers and the eagles up there), the wine is above average to very good (nothing excellent but all wines are drinkable), and the tasting room is low key (no freaking live bands), naturally beautiful and elegant. I do not have a 4 wheel drive vehicle, so climbing up the mountain in my car was memorable...and of course coming down the mountain has been etched into my brain. Play "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus on your way to this winery. If you don't understand what I am trying to say....the mountain is rather steep and narrow! However, it is sooo worth it. The views are breathtaking, the staff is kind and friendly, and the wine does not disappoint. I visited during COVID-19 and they required masks indoors and there was outdoor seating available. This place would be perfect for a wedding venue (honestly considering it, however still contemplating the drive up for all my guests hah) but seriously THE VIEW. This place is the type of place you want to spend the entire day at. We planned a day filled with wineries and this was our first stop and we did not want to leave! The wines weren't bad, the trip was a lot of fun - if you like narrow dirt/gravel roads up a ridge to about 1700 feet above sea level. We didn't know that using a GPS was not recommended so we headed out of Charlottesville to begin a day of winery tastings. The drive was actually fun - wouldn't want to do it at night or in the rain, however. The first thing we were asked was if we had followed GPS directions ... The people in the tasting room couldn't have been nicer (guess we didn't cross paths with the much maligned owner) and the wines weren't too bad - the Pinot Grigio was actually pretty good. We bought a bottle of 2008 Reserve Monticello. What they cannot prepare you for is the incredible view - too bad we missed the peak leaves by about a week. We left the winery by the "main" road and it was much better. Who knew there were so many dirt roads in Virginia? read more
