We wandered into white hall after stopping elsewhere and being disappointed with both the service and wine...and this was such a pleasant turn of our day! The ladies working were friendly and knowledgeable, we split a flight and did not taste a single bad wine. They said all (or almost all, my memory is a little fuzzy on that fact) of them are dry, and I loved that you could choose four of your liking. We tried the viognier, cab, petit Verdot and merlot - they were all so perfectly balanced and delicious. We sat by the fire and had a great time, it was so cozy. It had been several years so I decided to revisit. At 50 acres it is one of the bigger vineyards in the area, although it sells most of its fruit (only 2000-ish cases/year). It also has one of the prettiest driveways I've seen so far! The wines tended towards very light, even for the reds. If you're not a tannin fan, you'll find a lot to like here. 16 Viognier: Floral and honey notes, honey on the palate 15 Estate Chardonnay: Grassy notes, not much oak 17 Le Gras Rose: Nice! While White Hall's Estate Merlot and Estate Chardonnay were two of the best wines we've had in the region, we were quite disappointed by the lack of customer service. Arriving at the winery two hours before closing, the staff refused to serve us two of the wines included in our paid tasting -- not because they ran out, but because they didn't want to open a new bottle just for our group of three and any others joining for a tasting prior to closing. If this is a policy of the winery, I would highly recommend letting people know BEFORE they start the flight that this is the case and/or discounting the tasting accordingly. We may return for more bottles because the wine truly is exceptional, but we will likely not be enjoying tastings at the winery in the future. read more

A long overdue update, White Hall earns every bit of their five star review, with some pretty spectacular wines. It has been years since I've been to White Hall, and while I gave them a four star the last time I was a bit turned off by a perceived uppity atmosphere and some only above average wines. I've come back to eat/drink my words a little bit, as the wine here is exceptional. White Hall sits in a very nice facility with a small tasting bar in the center. Our pourer was passionate about the wines, and let my fiancee and I try the two tasting list options available - their standard list and a new reserve list (I believe it was $8 and $10 respectively). Let's go in order, starting with the whites. You start with the exquisite sparkling Thibaut-Jannisson Blanc de Chardonnay, a dry refreshing sparkling wine with crisp acidity. Next was the 2015 Chardonnay, aged in stainless steal and French/American oak, it's one of the better balanced chardonnays between acidity and oak. For a Chardonnay with a bit more complexity, try the 2014 Reserve Chardonnay, aged in french oak with light oak and a crisp fruity taste. They also make one of the better Gewurztraminer in the area, with a rich floral dry style. They also make a pretty solid Vigonier that's not my favorite in the area, but does the state grape of Virginia proud with the delicate dry flavors. Next, White Hall produced some exceptionally well-crafted reds. Starting with the Cabernet Franc 2015, a dry red that is surprisingly bright on the palate with a hint of toasty oak. The limited-vintage 2014 Merlot, a medium bodied red with more fruit forward flavors that some will like and other won't. Much better is the Cabernet Sauvignon, with good tannin structure and dark fruit flavors, with a hint of oak. But the Cab Sauv if better when it's blended with the Petit Verdot in the 2014 Petit Verdot, my favorite of the bunch, with fantastic tannins and rich berry flavor. We also tried the sweet 2014 Edichi port style dessert wine, wonderfully sweet and well balanced - dry drinkers won't gag on this like other dessert wines. Overall, White Hall is the real deal and should definitely make your list of got-to wineries in Crozet. I give a slight edge to their whites than their reds, but there's plenty to offer here for a experience levels. read more

We had a wonderful visit and the staff was friendly and informative. While we were there they experienced a register malfunction, causing a constant beeping sound but they carried on in spite of the noise. Wines were good, but not great, and we liked their offerings of red better than white. We bought a bottle of 2009 Merlot and 2010 Cab Sauv. Part of our "day two" tour in the Charlottesville area and we were not disappointed. This was one of the wineries on the self proclaimed Appellation Trail. read more

The best thing about this vineyard is the wine and the staff. I pretty much liked all the wines. I do think their reds are better than their whites though. The staff are all great, definitely one of their biggest assets. They are very knowledgeable and personable. Even though they are busy, they still have time to make your wine tasting experience great. We were able to do the wine tasting outside, which was great because it was a beautiful day. They also do a tour of the facilities, which is nice. The only reason it is 4 stars instead of 5 is because I think the place itself could be nicer. Setting is not as nice as King Family, although I do think the wines are better and so are the prices. I also thought that the drive there was very scenic and enjoyable. Again, as a pseudo-expert on VA wine, I have to start by saying that I hate giving 5 stars. But, I can't find a single fault. From the hospitality (and hilarity of the staff), to the surroundings... but most of all, this place is 5 stars because of the wine. The group I was with couldn't find a wine we didn't like. Often, I actually find that dangerous, it means safety, it means a lack to try something new. That's not this place. This place seems like its run by vintners practiced over every vintage and trying growing season that you can imagine. Everything that they try, they succeed at. The reds are the star here. They have a wide variety and try a lot of rarely attempted grapes, and those work, but what works even better are VA standards. Their Cab Sav is bold, strong, deep and balanced with a long finish. They are selling the 2007 now, and it will age beautifully, but has that beautiful balance of being ready to enjoy now. They have a Cuvee des Champs, their Meritage. As perfect a blend as you can hope for. The best and most simplest word I can describe it with is 'smooth.' It glides through all tasting receptors and stays with you in a pleasant finish. I can't knock a single wine, from the whites to the deserts, they stand out. That's probably the most important thing to say here, their wines make an impact on a VA wine scene that is very active, but often hard to stand apart from. They take chances, they succeed, they work tirelessly hard to keep making new and interesting wines, and are prepared to move forward if it doesn't work out. For instance, I asked them about their Syrah, which was good but not as great (for one, Syrah just doesn't grow right here), and they mentioned that this would be their last year growing it as it just doesn't quite work. Big points for me when a place is so confident in their quality that they'll admit when something doesn't live up to their high standards. If I would have been in a smaller group and had more time, I would have found it difficult to buy less than two cases. Some to enjoy, some to share and impress friends, and others to shelf and wait. I'll be back, and it couldn't be soon enough. Cheers to this place. read more

After my second visit to White Hall, my initial suspicions were confirmed. Everything here is just fine, but not much is stellar. We stopped in for a tasting and skipped the tour since we did it last time. It's nice that this winery offers tours, though, since not a ton do anymore. Service was very friendly, if a little slow. The guy who ran our tasting was friendly, honest, funny and fun to talk to. Like I said, most of the wines were just okay, though. They've got a lot of options spanning light whites, heavy reds, sweet patio wines and a few obscure options like Touriga, but as I tasted, I didn't find myself falling in love like I would have hoped to. Surprisingly, I thought their dessert wines were best. Sweet without being syrupy, both the red and the white were very pleasant. So, we ended up with a bottle of the Soliterre, an ice wine with fruit and honey flavors. Tastings were $5 each, and each person's $5 was refunded if you bought a bottle of wine, so we got one free and paid for one. There just wasn't another wine we loved. This winery is also a ways out in the country, so I'll probably wait a while before I head back. read more

Full disclosure: I'm not a huge wine guy, but I love visiting vineyards. And our recent trip to White Hall confirmed why I like going to them so much. This place pours on the warmth and genuine charm. Everyone, from the woman conducting our tasting to the owner who provided us with a tour of the vineyard was personable, knowledgable, and a definite pleasure to spend an afternoon with. The grounds are beautiful, and the drive out to White Hall is well worth the trip. It really was a perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon, and I hope to be able to visit there again. One more thing, in my completely amateur opinion, their Gewürztraminer was fantastic. During a trip to see my crazy "Indian-princess" boss (as Kev refers to her) in Charlottesville, and to tour Monticello, Kevin and I decided to also check out White Hall Vineyards with the Northwestern Alumni Association. Aside from being the only 2 people under age 50 at the wine-tasting event, we quite liked the vineyard. In fact, this is where I was first introduced to VIOGNIER! As it is now my favourite white wine, I would definitely recommend White Hall, because prior to our visit, I was a Viognier Virgin. White Hall Vineyards is one of those places where you want to buy every damn wine they pour. They're one of the oldest vineyards in the state, and they know what they're doing. Chalk up another winner in the Virginia Viognier canon, but you won't go wrong with any of the wines. Less stuffy than Barboursville or King Family, and another mountain view that works in any season. I'd suggest more indoor and outdoor seating options, but those are minor quibbles. Went here on a Wednesday afternoon and wasn't that impressed. We had just come from King Family Vineyard and wished that we had stayed there instead of making the trip over to White Hall. The views are great driving to White Hall, but there's not really much of a view from the tasting area. The woman who did our tasting was very knowledgeable - fairly standard tasting. Their souvenir wine glasses were odd - much smaller than a regular wine glass. It looks out of place in my cabinets. In all, it's not a bad place to stop, but I probably won't be back. read more

The wine here was on par with Virginia wines, with a few stand out such as the Merlot, which is definitely sold out as of this posting as there was 3 bottles left when we left. However, we were extremely turned off to this vineyard as we had to witness the tasting room manager browbeating the single tasting room pourer who was absolutely excellent. In my opinion that is something that should be saved for either after hours or during a time with no customers. We were disgusted as to how this lady was treated for a couple dollars of a mix-up with the previous group. We will not be back, and I hope to see the great pourer at a new vineyard that treats people with respect. I spent Saturday afternoon here with my boyfriend and two friends. They were doing the Art in the Vineyard event, and it was a pretty diverse display of pieces, including artisan crafts and jewelry in addition to the art works. Everyone was extremely friendly. We did our tasting outside with a delightful woman named Charlee (forgive my spelling, it's my best attempt) who apparently just returned to working at the vineyard after being gone for a little while. She was so charismatic and fun, and answered our questions with total charm and lots of jokes. The 2010 Gewurztraminer is incredible. It wasn't too sweet, it was just right, and we bought a bottle later. The Petit Manseng was pretty sweet but I liked it. I'm not a big reds fan but my friends loved the 2009 Cuvee des Champs. She can talk about basically anything - she was up with a lot of the esoteric crap me and my friends chat about. My boyfriend must have hugged her two or three times. I hope she doesn't steal him. Then we did a tour with Tony Champ, the owner. He was really funny and showed us every step of their wine making process - opened up the destemmer, pointed out details, explained the functionality of the components. We're all pretty inquisitive and he explained everything. He's a chemist, and he explains things from a very objective perspective. We tasted the Petit Verdot grapes right off the vine, and they were incredibly sweet. He explained the jackets on the reservoirs in the fermentation room, showed us a vat with an active fermentation that was about a week old with a developed cap on top, and told us details about where their barrels are made and how they utilize them over the life of the barrel. It was all really fascinating and made me appreciate the detail and technique that goes into the process. And I was delighted when he actually used the word "unctuous." How often do you get to hear THAT word conversationally? Awesome. We settled back at a table on the lawn with a cheese plate and the bottle of the Gewurztraminer (if you want a cheese plate, I think you have to reserve them ahead though, so call ahead). Lisa Champ came by and chatted with us while we enjoyed the wine. Everyone was so genuinely friendly and warm. I'm not really much of a wine guy but I wouldn't hesitate to go back and spend another afternoon there again this fall, it's so beautiful and the wine there is so good for the reasonable price point. I came here yesterday with my friends as part of a bachelorette party. I know that Charlottesville wineries get bachelorette parties of varying levels of loudness and obnoxiousness. My friends and I were a group of 6 and walked in quietly and politely to the bar for a tasting. As we were walking up to the bar we heard an older gentleman tell a coworker to take us, basically because he didn't want to deal with us. We sat down to do the reds only wine tasting. It started with a rose sparkling wine that I really liked and that was the best the tasting got. The rest of the wines weren't good. They all tasted very young and lacked depth. I dumped out nearly every wine that we tasted and by the end of the tasting the 6 of us had dumped out the equivalent of a bottle of wine. Not a single one of us liked any of the wines we tasted except the sparkling. And even the sparkling lost its appeal quickly as the wine warmed up and the bubbles went away. The outdoor atmosphere was really nice, but the poor treatment we got negated any desire we had to spend time there, and we certainly weren't going to order a bottle (which we did at every other vineyard we went to that day). read more

This has one of the most beautiful grounds of any central Virginia winery and probably the most beautiful drive to get there. They don't aspire to greatness or a a giant selection of varietals like Barboursville does, but they have a good selection of inexpensive, easy-drinking wines. Oddly enough for me, one of the wines that really sticks out here is the sweet white. I'm generally not a fan of sweet wines because of the sickeningly sugary aftertaste; however, the one that White Hall makes has a nice acidic kick at the finish that rounds things out well. read more

When we moved to Virginia, we had no idea there was a 'wine scene'. After we finally discovered Virginia wine, this was the first winery that we decided to visit. It's a beautiful location. The tasting room is simple, with just a tasting bar and some tables set up to display wine, brochures, wine keys, etc. The wine is great - we especially love the Vin Gris in the summer. We're also big big fans of the cabernet franc (we were cab franc newbies before coming here). One thing that I don't like about this vineyard is that we felt they went TOO FAST during the tasting. We've been there twice and it happened both times. It was especially bad on our second visit, when our server did not even explain the wine to us, she just kept pouring more wine as soon as we had finished the previous taste. Once I even asked her to slow down a little because I was getting overwhelmed, but she didn't listen. Great wine but I felt way too rushed. Come here for great wine but be prepared for a very fast tasting! read more

Fantastic wine at great prices. They were having a "bonus" pouring of the viognier theday we were there. What a great wine, light and refreshing. Only downside, the tasting room is small, a bit cold, and doesn't have any great setting to encourage you to stay and enjoy a bottle on the premises. The location is beautiful, so if its warm you can sit at the picnic benches. I'd go back for the wine, especially their reds, but it would be an even better experience if they had some cozy setting or offering snacks for purchase. read more

We love visiting and supporting the VA wine industry. We have visited over 50 VA wineries to date. Beautiful views along the drive to White Hall. However, not really any views once at the winery. The tasting room was quite spacious with display of the awards and a glass back wall with a view of the stainless steel tanks. Our hostess Annie was friendly, knowledgable and went out of her way to make our tasting experience as nice as possible. Very nice generous pours and a nice tour of the barrel room enhanced our experience. The Viognier was outstanding. The reds were quite nice also. My wife and I spent a few days in Crozet. Very relaxing time! Decided to visit a local winery, and had several to choose from. Looked through a couple of websites and decided to try White Hall. There was one other group in the tasting room when we arrived. The woman running the tastings was extremely friendly and helpful. I wish I had gotten her name to recognize her here. We had a great time and enjoyed the wine tasting. We ended up buying several bottles and will visit again next time we're up that way! read more

the scenery is lovely, but if you enjoy wine i would suggest bypassing white hall. the pours are generous. i'm not one to dump out wine, but i could not drink the overly sweet whites and...the reds are a little foggy due to our generous pours and "bonus tastings" we were given that weren't on the regular tasting menu. the guy pouring was a character - didn't want to talk in depth about anything and kept eating the oyster crackers he set in front of us. there are so many great wineries in virginia - i wouldn't go out of your way to visit this one. read more

I'm a big Virginia wine buff, and I've been to probably 25 or so wineries in a variety of regions around the state... I love White Hall. Without even having tried them all, I would say that it's one of the top 5 wineries in the state. It's a little out of the way but a friend and I stumbled on it while driving around to some of the other wineries in the area. Granted, we were the only people in the place at the time, so of course we got good service, but the staff was extremely friendly. The pours were the biggest pours I've ever seen at a Virginia winery and there were lots of wines to sample. They had a standard tasting list but they also had an additional suppliment that they offer certain wines from based on the season/what's open/whatever. Not every person is going to like every wine at every winery, but I have to say, this place had the highest number of wines that I would recommend to a friend. The setting is also beautiful. It's hard to go wrong here. This place is definitely worth a visit. read more
