I stayed at the Uppercross House Hotel for 9 days recently getting my daughter settled into nearby Trinity Hall and was so pleased that Mother Reilly's is the house restaurant/bar! What a fun, friendly, action-packed place! Since the kitchen keeps later hours (10 p.m.), I often found myself grabbing a late meal there and I was pleasantly surprised to find that each thing I ordered was absolutely delicious! From Prawns Pil Pil (would love the recipe) to Mother Reilly's Skillet Potatoes to the Vegetarian Mixed Plate and more - each dish was fresh and tasty. Sometimes I went in without my daughter and always felt welcomed. The staff was super accommodating and friendly no matter how busy they were. And busy they are! There is always something happening at Mother Reilly's! There is a live music night, an open mic night, a quiz night, and days dedicated to whatever big sports event happens to be taking place. My husband is coming to town soon and staying at the Uppercross - and I can't wait for him to check out Mother Reilly's, too. read more

It was another great night-love true mixed plate of tapenade, peppers, bruschetta as an app. It's such a cozy true Irish pub, service is great. Music is always enjoyable. We travelled from The other side of town to enjoy this gem and will make sure it's always a stop when we visit. read more

Looks very, very small on the outside but is huge on the inside. Has student pints which I love, and the people are friendly enough. Just the right balance of class and run-down. Basically meaning my chair was broken and falling apart, but my glass was clean (I think). These days only royalty seam get clean glasses in a bar, so I guess I was royalty..... I'll have to try the food at some point. Fyi, they have "Mid-Strength Guinness" (2.5% abv) if you care. read more

SUCH a great place!! I am a little biased as I play music here every Monday night with our band Loose. Dave, who owns the place, is a gentleman. Gerry and Mark behind the bar are so fab as well. Great service, truly Irish. Lovely waiters and waitresses, hard working people. Monday night is great for traditional Irish music Tuesday night has one of Dublin's only free table quizzes Thursday night has an open trad session The food is delicious, especially the tuna melt... if you're into that sort of thing! The decor is cosy and well, just lovely! The smoking area is large, covered and heated. I have never had a bad night in here in the 2 years I have been a regular. It's always been great craic! Very cute little pub in Rathmines featuring my most favourite of features - random higgledeepigledee rooms, all leading into each other, all different levels and sizes. Small, big, cute, compact, teensy, pocket sized, randomness. They have a kind of indoor-outdoor-ish beer garden out the back which is nice also. I only had a quick two drinks here so can't vouch for food, but the bar staff are lovely, grand for a good chat, and the general surroundings are spot on. I'll give it a 3.5 based on the fact that I likedt he surroundings and both my father and my wife thought their food was tasty. I ordered the chicken teruiyaki but it arrived 5-10 minutes after the other dishes because of a "chicken-beef mix up" apparently. I waited patiently, as you do and it came out. The salad was nice but I felt it was a little out of place with a dish like chicken teriyaki. Maybe that's just me, I don't know. The rice was nice and fluffy, the stir-fried veg was tasty but the chicken was overdone. I think they may have butterflied it to cook it more quickly because of the mix-up but someone hadn't kept their eye on the grill and it was overdone. I'll go back again because my two didning partners liked theirs but it's fair to say I was a little disappointed in my own fare. read more

Ma Reilleys is the ultimate local. The interior is dark and cosy, with flagstone floors, oak beams and worn old wooden furniture. The lighting is low and atmospheric, with candles shoved into old wine bottles dripping with layers of old wax on every table. The clientele are a mixed bunch, from the solitary bearded man perched at the bar nursing a pint of the black stuff over the Irish Times crossword, to the group of rowdy students availing of the excellent value 'Student Pints' for just €3.50, every night of the week. There's live music organised every Friday night in the bar, which is free, and as the pub is the local watering hole for many of the area's musicians, impromptu jam sessions are struck up regularly in the heated beer garden out the back. The type of place Frodo Baggins might enjoy a drink, Mother Reilly's prides itself on maintaining a jovial atmosphere within the periphery of an old fashioned, rustic, country pub with oak beams a plenty and snug lighting. I visited this countrified alcove buried underneath the Uppercross House Hotel many a time for a hearty Guinness before ever sitting down for a warm meal. 'Hearty' and 'warm' are words that too can be used to describe the general ambience of this welcoming retreat. The essence of warmth emanated by your surroundings is thus carried through into the food and drink. I enjoyed a plentiful steak and chips, finished of by a wicked banoffee pie. This really is pub grub at its most heart-warming. After such a bountiful meal I was delighted to retreat to the quaint patio smoking area that, in décor feels very disconnected from the rest of the pub because it is essentially like a conservatory that's a bit out of form, bit of rust here and there but nonetheless remains very charming owing to it resembling something a bit bigger than a classy greenhouse. This courtyard therefore offers an opportune retreat from the tavern. With reasonable prices this really is a captivating refuge away from the bustling Rathmines neighbourhood. I've only been here twice, and both times it was for the Tuesday night quiz. Its great fun and attracts a pretty big crowd. Good atmosphere, good fun, good drinks! Next time I'll try some food. We went along to the quiz last night with a couple of friends, and met up with some of S_'s old work buddies. The pub looks like a real pub, old wooden furniture and hard stools. I can't comment on the quality of the pint as I was expecting busy morning so I just had a couple of lager shandys. The quiz is good craic, the rounds are varied and the questions are not so hard that with a few people you can cover most of the bases reasonably well. For those who care, we came second, pipped at the post by 1 point. TIP Don't over complicate things or look for trick questions. If it looks like the obvious answer, it probably is. All in all, this seems like a decent old style pub and I'd like to pop back again for a couple of decent pints and maybe a bite to eat; the food I saw coming out looked like decent pub fare. read more

From the outside Mother Reilly's looks like it might be in the running for smallest pub in Dublin, but behind those doors is pub that extends well back and is filled with different rooms and areas. Near the bar at the front entrance there's a snug little area of stools and tables that lead to the more old manish pub style. When you round the corner you're met with a row of booth type tables. There's a large smoking area, that's covered with around 6 or seven tables. On weekend nights they have live music playing near the bar, and others having a bit of a session outside in the smoking area. I was there a few weekends ago and saw a great blues band, that everyone in the audience was fawning over. It's a great intimate venue and there's a great connection between the crowd and the band. The best part about it is you don't have to pay a cover in-- and they were having a special on pitchers of Miller lite for €12. I have to admit I'm not Miller Lite's biggest fan, but at that price I couldn't really complain! read more

Came across this pub as I was taking a stroll after dinner one night. My girlfriend was out with a friend of hers for drinks so after dinner decided well lets have a pint or four lol, and just sit back and see if there is anyone interesting to talk to. Mother Reilly's was the first pub I came across and glad I decided to go in. I noticed it was about 730PM and there was a sign outside that said trivia 930pm. Figured well maybe we will stay for trivia lets see what the crowds like. After a pint I noticed it was still kind of quiet so figured lets have another and head home. Thats when it was like they must have opened the flood gates, it had to be about 50 people came through the door, thats when I realized I for sure was staying. The trivia is just the right amount of difficulty. Put it this way as an American who had some help from fellow people at the bar I did fine. All in all I had a great time, and would do this more often if I was in Dublin more. Very friendly crowd and bar staff. Would not hesitate to come here on my own again for trivia night. This is as close to perfect as a pub can get. The staff are equal parts friendly and quick; the decor is classic Irish pub style; the building is like a rabbit warren with different areas playing different types of sports; there is an open fire; the beer is fresh and tasty; the smokers area has enough heating to keep you warm; the restaurant area's roof is all glass that opens to the sky and gives the room natural light, a complete contrast to some of the other areas which are dimly lit and cozy. Still very good. Any students living in Rathmines could do worse than coming here for a drink. They have student prices on the alcohol and they ask you before you order. The staff are really sound. There is open fires about the place which is great. The smoking area is heated and there is a nice, friendly atmosphere. Visited Mother Reilly's on Sunday of the May Bank Holiday - Food was great but experienced LOUSY service. It was slow and no offence but the server looked gloomy and depressed that he had to be at work Ok they just opened up for food service however our server seemed more interested in drinking his cup of coffee. He didnt know the soup of the day he had to go to the kitchen and find out. He never once asked us for drinks. We gave him the benefit of a doubt because his shift had just started but by the time the starters came out (20 mins from time of arrival) we had to ask for a jug of water for the table to which he brought down 6 pints of water with ice. I only ever frequent Mother Reilly's for their food as it is good and tasty but with their service getting slower and slower each time I go, I'm becoming reluctant to return. The female servers are far more efficient in dealing with the customers and are always on the ball in regards to the customer's needs (drinks, fresh napkins and cutlery etc) - something that the male server on that Sunday seemed to LACK!! read more

Best place I have been to in Dublin. I watched the Mcgregor v Diaz fight there last night and the staff and the regulars made me feel at home. It was a great place to just have a beer and chill. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but Mother Reillys or "Ma's" has all the things a pub should have; a bar, live music now and again, decent food and a roomy heated garden for the smokers among us who'd like more than a open-air closet to kill ourselves in (there are often impromptu jam sessions in the smoking area too). read more
