I've been hesitant to shop Chelsea's Nest because I'm not a big fan having to calendar my shopping…read moredue to limited hours of business and weekends only. But it looked so good I figured it was worth a try. When arrived at 9:00 a.m. on a Saturday I was disappointed to find there was very little available and no bread for sale . Not wanting to leave empty handed, I purchased a small jar of homemade jam and 3 giant cookies - chocolate chip, biscoff cookie butter, and I think one was chocolate caramel (spoiler alert: They were all good, but the cookie butter one was to die for!) Then as I was leaving, I was delighted to see a gentleman coming out with an armload of hot and steaming sourdough rounds in several flavors. I opted for a loaf of the jalapeno pepper jack and a rosemary olive. I'm not really into sourdough but my sister is crazy for it so I went mostly to pick up something for her. I went straight home with my plunder and we cut right into those loaves. Since sourdough is hugely popular in Tuolumne County, I think I've tried everything out there - none of them have been particularly memorable or enough to sway my opinion of sourdough. Until now. Chelsea's Nest has made me a true believer in the deliciousness of sourdough bread! The jalapeno pepper jack bread was amazing - hot hot hot, and yet very tolerable to a not-so-spice girl who can't handle much heat. It was utterly delicious. But the winner hands down was the rosemary olive loaf. Usually you're lucky to get two or three olives in the entire loaf of bread but not with this olive laden slice of heaven! I regret that I did not take a picture after cutting into it because there was literally a layer of olives rolled into the dough, like a green speckled rainbow. The bread was doughy and chewy - all the things you hope for in a good sourdough bread. It was like an out of body experience that brought tears to my eyes and I am literally drooling at the memory of it. It was simply THE BEST sourdough bread I've ever had! I am counting the hours until I can go back and try other flavors - there was a carrot cake loaf that I didn't get because no one in my family likes carrot cake. But after sampling two of Chelsea's flavors, I'll bet it was spectacular. I should have bought all of the bread (oink oink oink) but how would I know how good it was going to be?!?! I just hope I can be as lucky to encounter the variety I did last weekend, but it's probably too much to ask for it to be hot and fresh like it was that magical day! Believe me, it's worth the trip, it's worth the time, and it's definitely worth the price! So spin the wheel and take a chance that there will be an abundance of treasure waiting for you at Chelsea's Nest. You will be so glad you did! NOTE: just a follow-up to my first post. I made it back today and to my delight there was a carrot cake sourdough loaf there, like it was waiting for me to come back - it was indeed everything I hoped it would, AND MORE!!! It was absolutely amazing!
