I am genuinely disappointed by my experience at Mount Everest Restaurant and Bar in the Inner Harbor. My wife, our 6-year-old daughter, and I stopped in for an early dinner after spending several hours at the National Aquarium. The restaurant's proximity (under five minutes away) and strong online rating (~4.6) made it an easy choice. We were also influenced by a promotion advertised on their website: buy two entrées, get the third (chicken or vegetarian) free. When we tried to order under that promotion, our server told us they had not run it in "many years." If that is the case, it should not be listed online. It factored into our decision to dine there, and advertising an outdated special is misleading. That said, my negative review is not based primarily--or even secondarily--on the inaccurate promotion. Restaurants ultimately succeed or fail on taste and execution, and that is where this meal fell well short. We ordered the Lamb Junelly, the Kabob Platter, and two garlic naans. The Lamb Junelly, which I requested at a medium spice level, leaned noticeably sweet. It contained surprisingly little lamb, and while I did not find it overly chewy, my wife did. Overall, it lacked depth and balance. The bigger letdown was the Kabob Platter (chicken tikka, lamb seekh kabob, shrimp, and chicken tandoori). All three of us agreed the chicken tikka was dry and nearly flavorless. That says something, given how hungry we were after skipping lunch. My wife captured it best: "I was so looking forward to the Kabob Platter, and I was so disappointed by it. I left the restaurant almost sad." I felt much the same. Service was acceptable but inattentive. Our server never checked in during the meal. Had he done so, I likely would have asked for lemon slices to brighten the kabobs. When we left--around 6:00 p.m. on a Thursday--we were the only guests in the restaurant, yet there was no acknowledgment from our server or the staff members sitting nearby. That absence of basic hospitality stood out. This is not an inexpensive place (garlic naan costs $7 apiece). At those prices, execution and attentiveness matter. On this visit, both fell short. Among the many restaurants I have visited, this would land in my bottom quartile. I would not return, and I would not recommend it--especially for the à la carte dinner service. read more

This restaurant, for me, is a hidden gem! I've passed by often and happened to stop in for their all you can eat lunch buffet ($15.99)-- it was truly incredible and I can't believe I hadn't tried it before! Every dish served in the buffet was delicious I went back for seconds. The vegetable pakora in particular was a hit among the group of people I came with! The workers were also kind enough to replenish our naan basket when it got low, making sure we had everything we needed. As an extra bonus, there was also dessert! The gulab jamun and rice pudding were both perfect in my eyes, the right balance of sweetness without being overpowering or too rich for me. I recommend this place incredibly highly, such great value and such great food I am so excited to come back! read more

Craving for some Indian dish so I decided to try this place out. They have an AYCE lunch special so that's a plus. Place was empty, granted it was on a Wednesday. Not a whole lot of options at the buffet line. They have butter chicken, tandoori chicken, saag paneer, pakoras, chana, and some samosas. They also have warm chai and some gulab jamon. What they had to offer was very yummy and they also give out fresh, warm naan so that was great. For the price range, which is decent, you'd get more in a non-touristy area, but business is business, I'm not fussin' about it much. Staff are friendly and attentive and making sure to promptly refill the food trays. All I know is that this place satisfied my cravings and I might comeback again, someday. read more

Back again--this time for the buffet at the "other" locally-owned Mt. Everest. This one in a glitzy chain area at the Inner Harbor (NOT Hampden). Service and food do not disappoint! The buffet has all the Indian/Nepalese favorites that you normally wouldn't eat at one time. Going back two times (and a third, for dessert), I was able to get rice with some of my faves, such as saag, masala, tandoori chicken, and vegetarian pakora. I enjoyed the ability to make a small salad of fresh carrots, cucumbers, peppers and lettuce (with choice of the usual dark brown sweet or green sour sauces). Lastly, I had some kheer and homemade sugared doughnut holes (gulab jamun) in silky sweet syrup. Yum! It was quiet on a Monday afternoon during the winter season, but the always on-point service and loungey background music give the feeling of an enjoyable and busy evening just about to begin... (Note: Free or metered parking "ain't" easy around these dang busy downtown Inner Harbor streets, but I found convenient metered spots just off Pratt and across from the restaurant--otherwise, just rideshare it with some friends!) read more

Came here for the lunch buffet on a Friday. The spread was basic, with one meat curry(chicken tikka masala) tandoori chicken and a couple vegetable options. Chai was on offer and it was fine. As I sat down, I noticed the AC was not working that well. Service was okay and the waitress was friendly, but seemed to struggle with the few tables. At $19.99, the value proposition is just not there. I get that it is in the middle of Baltimore. However, Fogo on the other side of the building has a lunch salad bar special at $18 and they have plenty to offer. read more

I came in for the lunch buffet. It was full of freshly cooked dishes. They offered 6 or 7 main dishes and plenty of sides. It was a little bit on the bland side but I understand that buffets are for the masses so there is that. The paneer was outstanding! The naan was also served fresh and hot. I really liked that to soak up some of the sauces. It was an equal split of vegetarian and meat dishes. Sadly on my visit there were out of papadam. The tea was very flavorful. Decided to do the AYCE for llunch as it's the best way to sample a number of dishes. It was the right move. The Chicken Tiki Masala was spiced just right, with the Chicken being so moist. Same could be said for the Goat Curry with the Chicken Pandori being the third protein and very good. Vegetable Pakora was the winner (for me) as I soaked all that goodness with their Naan. Having the ability to start my meal with a salad (all fresh) topped with their dark brown sweet sauce added to my delight as to this lunch. The Yellow Dal fry was also excellent. Finished with the Gulab Jamun and their tea to mark my best meal in the city. read more

Very disappointing indeed ! The first thing that comes to mind is how pedestrian the food actually is---the cooking lacks any semblance of the depth of flavor that any average Indian restaurant likely has in spades. We started our meal with the Samosa Chaat appetizer which was actually decent and far and away the best dish of our meal ---7/10. The Naan was a joke. You can tell a lot about an Indian restaurant based on their Naan and boy was this some god-awful Naan. The Salmon Tikka was the worst offender though. Charred beyond recognition & devoid of any flavor this was perhaps one of the worst Salmon dishes that I've ever eaten.The Tikka masala sauce that it was served with was loaded with sugar and you could literally taste all the artificial colors they added---yup they sure don't skimp on their artificial colors (specifically Red-30 which is the worst color you can possibly add to food). Moving on , we also had the Saag Paneer ---about average, again completely flavorless-- 5/10. Finally we had the Chicken Momos (that I had so much hope for since this was a Nepalese owned restaurant) turned out to be a major dud again 5/10. The chutney that came along with the Momos was basically inedible.Truly shocked The only positive comment I'd say about the restaurant is that the service was prompt and efficient. Our Server was knowledgeable and friendly so good job there buddy. Oh and I completely forgot---the prices ---omg the prices!!!---these were Manhattan prices with Baltimore quality. $20 for Channa Masala, $5 for the most awful Naan imaginable---lord have mercy! For reference these prices rival The Royal Taj in Columbia and as you well know, that is a bonafide upscale Indian benchmark in Maryland. Mount Everest is a very ordinary hole in the wall restaurant in Downtown Baltimore where ( during our meal )2 homeless people came in to use the restrooms---this ain't no fine dining if you know what I mean. All said and done I'm quite confident when I say that anywhere else(Say In Northern Virginia or Montgomery County) Mount Everest would not last more than 6 months ! I'm pretty sure the Afternoon Buffet is a hit with the local workforce but when we went at Sunday 7 pm (on Father's Day no less) the restaurant was completely empty with one party waiting for their takeout order. If you're a connoisseur of quality Indian food then please stay away from this sinking masquerade. Quite simply, the food is awful and an insult to the wonderful flavors of the subcontinent. Very nice hole-in-the wall. Clean environment, and friendly staff. They recommended the buffet and everyone in the family enjoyed something different. The Samosas were my favorite, my daughter loves the two types of rice, and my husband tried every other dish and said they did not disappoint. Large vegetarian selection as well. Son had chicken tenders and fries (bc kids ‍) and loved them. Also- fresh Naan bread for the win read more

Very nice waitress and good service. She was a family member of the establishment. Naan was superb, tasted homemade. All their food might be homemade, but the sauces are very rich and creamy -- not bad, but too much so for me and my wife -- and too mildly spiced. All the sauces seem to use the same cream base as they have a similar underlying flavor. The family appears to be from the Himalayan area of India. So I am guessing that is why the sauce is super heavy, using lots of ghee (butter) from goat milk. read more
