I had never tried Kumari in the past so I was excited to say something new and then learned upon sitting down that they offer buffet lunches on the weekends for about $18 all in. The service was really spectacular considering, and the tea was really delightful. Mango Lassi was too sweet. The space is quite large and they have seating on both sides of the restaurant. This is a no-frills restaurant and sometimes you have to grab silverware and napkins yourself but with two people working there and a restaurant full of people I thought the service was great. My friends and I used to come here pretty frequently when I was a graduate student at Hopkins. Vaguely remember the food being great, and I used to look forward to the Masala chai. Came back for a weekend to show my husband around and thought it would be a good idea to check this place out again after so many years. I recently placed a huge to-go order from Kumari and was really impressed by the quality and flavors. There's a lot of Indian options on this stretch of Charles St. and I've been making a point to try them each out to see which one I like the best. Kumari is probably my favorite so far. I placed an order online and although I didn't receive a message once it was ready, it was all bagged up and waiting for me when I arrived at the estimated time. We ordered... - Chicken tikka masala - Butter chicken - Lamb biryani - Vegetable pakoras - Naan I was really impressed by the flavors of all the entrees. All the sauces were so rich and creamy. The tikka was distinctly different from the butter chicken and clearly marked on the to-go containers. The lamb biryani was to die for! I loved the aromatic rice and the lamb just fell apart with so much flavor. It was about $80 for everything but it was a huge amount of food. My only complaint is I wish the tikka and butter chicken had better portion of meat. It was a lot of sauce and rice and not a lot of protein. I stopped by Kumari for lunch with some friends this past weekend when we were in Mount Vernon for a few hours. They had a lunch buffet, which on the weekend is just a couple of dollars more than on weekdays. Overall, I thought that the food was okay, quite inconsistent. Some dishes in the buffet weren't bad. I enjoyed the palak paneer and pakora. The rice on the buffet had sat way too long - it had crisped and dried, and I didn't up eating the rice I put on my plate. The Tandoori chicken was dry. The restaurant is nice - comfortable, traditional, quite large (would be good for larger groups). The service was fine - sort of not present at lunch buffet (they left a large carafe of water for us to share and we didn't see any servers after that until we went up to the counter to pay - but that makes sense during buffet lunch). Overall, it was fine. There are definitely places I prefer over Kumari, but if you're looking for an Indian lunch buffet, Kumari isn't a bad option. read more

Kumari's lunch buffet id very reliable and a good value! Try to get their early for the freshest food. If you go late the hot bar begins to dry out. Located in the upper level of a renovated building, the dining room is very clean despite the age of the building itself. Staff are polite and check on you to ensure you're comfortable without being too pushy. I appreciate that they always keep our drinks filled and cleared our table as necessary. Had the buffet today with an Indian friend who also cooks and likes it here! I used to go here when there were more bars, nightlife and the dearly departed Mt. Vernon Stable. I'm sorry I've been away so long--but anyhoo...buffet food and kheer were solid but seemed to have less variety and pep than the Paradise buffet (in Woodlawn, near Security Blvd). The chai tea was a trifle "(American") sweet but good (better than Sweet 27 Bar but not as supreme as the chai tent couple at Hopkins/BMA--sorry, I'm just being honest). The cashier was very nice, hoping I'd come back! Overall, the buffet is good for an afternoon brunch/lunch break and sit down with a friend. I never go to Baltimore, therefore it's highly unlikely I will be back. However, if I lived closer I definitely would. I went for lunch and didn't realize they have a lunch buffet. They had just cleaned out the buffet to prep for dinner but we were still able to order off of the menu. They had a few table up a few steps that look out the window which was really nice! It looks like they have more tables towards the back of the restaurant but I could be wrong. I had the Garlic Naan, Chicken Tikka Masala (lvl 1 spice), and Chicken Biryani (lvl 2 spice). I think we were the only customers inside but the food took awhile to come out (about 30 minutes if I remember correctly); it took long enough I almost called our waiter/server over to confirm she put in our order. The first thing I noticed when she brought out the food was the portion size. It looked a lot smaller than I was expecting, BUT the dishes were deceptively small. Trust when I say there was PLENTY of food for two. Also, I was really shocked at the amount of naan that comes in an order. Other places will charge the same price, or more, for a significantly smaller portion of naan. The food was delicious. I was taken aback at how sweet the main dishes were, but it was still yummy. Even after eating plenty of helpings, we only got through half of the food (though we finished the naan). The sweetness of the food might throw a lot of people off, especially if the Indian food you've eaten thus far has never been sweet. Aside from the sweetness, the food was so flavorful and aromatic. For the price, the lunch buffet was great! I enjoyed the food quite a bit, but I felt as though the selection could have been a bit better when compared to similar restaurants. The chicken tikka was a classic, rich and savory with good amount of heat (got the medium, very doable). One wish is for the chicken pieces to be a little more tender. Gobi manchurian was a sleeper pick but really glad to have gotten it! Deep fried and crispy cauliflower pieces spiced fantastically. Order a basket of garlic naan to round it out. I Placed an online order via grub hub around their opening time 11:30am. It was ready in the projected 25 minutes as stated--- I was in a hurry, so this was great. I was able to pull up right out front and run in, and my order was waiting at the door. I didn't pay to park, so I didn't have time to check my order. I was excited to see that everything was correct when I got to my destination. Most tandoori chicken is too dry to eat alone in my opinion-- but this one was moist. Delicious food, but... Mine was stolen. I ordered delivery, gave my address, the name of my apartment and my apartment number and my phone number. When the driver got here he called the number he had and the person who answered told him he was at the wrong address I guess? So he took it to someone else's house. My concierge tried to stop him. I called and tried to get them to bring it to my house or pick it up, but it was too late my food was gone. Absolutely incredible food for a very decent price. We have never tried this spot and ordered delivery and it was amazing. It arrived way faster than was scheduled, the food came piping hot, it was perfectly seasoned, and the portions were huge! Pro-tip: don't order Indian spicy unless you really mean it! This had me sweating and fogging up my glasses, y'all but that painful burn is just too good, I can't pass it up. We ordered the butter lamb and chicken tikka masala, both were fantastic. I liked the vegetable samosa, it was flavorful and crispy yet moist on the inside, however I've never had the filling completely mashed, it was an interesting texture that I didn't hate but didn't love. Tried Kumari yesterday with my girlfriend due to the proximity to our hotel. We absolutely loved it. Started out with the vegetable samosas. Very flavorful (especially with the plum sauce). I got the chicken curry, my girlfriend the chicken tikka masala. Generous portions of each with a large dish of jasmine rice to share and garlic naan on the side. As we were finishing up, we received a complimentary order of gulab jamun, the perfect way to end the meal. Service was fantastic, our server making sure we were doing all right throughout our meal. Great ambiance with lovely art and aesthetics throughout the restaurant. I am hoping that Kumari gets plenty of business (the restaurant was unfortunately pretty empty at dinner last night) because it's definitely worth a return visit next time I'm in Baltimore. read more

Kumari is a nice spot in the wonderful Mount Vernon neighborhood for authentic South Asian food. Besides being in a great location, the inside of the restaurant is well-decorated and comfortable, and the service is friendly. They bring complimentary papad and chutneys when you sit down which are delicious. The menu is large and mostly everything I've tried here has been pretty good - my only complaint is that a few of the curries had WAY too much added sugar so they were too sweet. The 2nd time we went, my husband asked for less sugar in his dish and he liked it better. If you think you'd be the same way you may want to make sure your order gets less sweetener, too. I'd probably rate them more around 3.5 stars for this reason but I rounded up. (Also, don't get the strawberry lassi - that's the one thing I've ordered here that was just awful.) read more

This used to be my wife and I favorite Indian restaurant but over the last year or so the quality of the food has gone downhill. We have ordered many dishes from this restaurant over the years but our favorite dishes from here would have to be the butter chicken and chicken korma which we ordered tonight and it was TERRIBLE! The so called "Butter Chicken" tasted like CAMPBELL's tomato soup with chicken and no seasoning they should have paired it with a grilled cheese it would have been better. I don't like to give out low stars often but I was truly disappointed. I do want to start off saying I ordered through GrubHub for delivery. I feel that maybe it is better to eat in person as food might be fresh. I just ate this today for lunch. And I picked it up 5 minutes after it being delivered to my front desk. Delivery took less than 45 minutes from start to finish which was great. Flavor was there the sauce itself was delicious and not too spicy. The rice was cooked well and soft. They do give you a good portion which is great! The two stars I took away are solely for the chicken. It was extremely dry and hard. The outside of the chicken cubes were red like it was cooked previously for another dish as a Tandoori and left for1-2 hours untouched. I will not order from them as delivery again but will try their lunch buffet in person to give it another shot. read more

A jewel of Mt Vernon, Kumari serves up delicious Nepalese/Indian food at very reasonable prices. Pre-pandemic it was particularly known for its huge lunch buffet, but while this is temporarily on pause there is still great food to be had here for delivery or pickup. My go-to dishes are always the Tikka Masala and Malai Kofta and I'll tell you why - the SAUCE. I don't know their secret, but Kumari has the most shockingly tasty sauces I have ever eaten on many of their dishes, and these two dishes come with some of my favorites. As mentioned in other reviews, it tends not to be too spicy so it's ok to ask for at least 3 stars of spice if you like a little heat with your food. I usually also throw in a mango lassi and some garlic naan :) kind staff, good food, big portions, wholeheartedly recommend. They've been feeding me for years! read more

I tried their delivery service the other day. Ordered Non-veg bhojan which came with naans, rice, one mutton curry and one dal. Everything was delicious and the meat was well cooked. Also ordered gulab jamun and strawberry lassi. Lassi was too sweet and gulab jamun was disappointing. I was super impressed with how fast their delivery was. I ordered on yelp around 12:23 in the afternoon on a weekday. Food was delivered by 12:59 pm. My friend and I visited tonight for dinner before a play. The restaurant was mostly empty except for a few other tables and a person or two at the bar. For a Wednesday night, I didn't expect much more than that, considering there are so many Indian/Nepalese restaurants in Baltimore, including Nepal House right across the street! The interior is very long and big and has plenty of seating, interesting decor and art, and a warm cozy feel. My friend ordered the lamb tikka masala, and I ordered the chicken tikka masala. My dish was presented appealingly and had lots of cubes of chicken. However, the dish was sweet instead of spicy as I had asked. I wonder if this is common with the Nepalese take on chicken tikka masala, because this happened at two other Nepalese restaurants. Still, I gobbled it all down. The chicken was cooked and seasoned well; did not taste stringy, stale, or chewy; and had a tangy aroma. We received a nice big bowl of plain rice, which was adequate for two adults. We did not order any naan. The service was very good--attentive, friendly, cordial, professional. I would return but only after trying the rest of the Indian/Nepalese restaurants in the area. I paid $16 for my meal (reasonable for Mt Vernon) and left a $3 tip. read more

Came here for lunch buffet. I had a volunteering event from 9a-2p on a Saturday so knowing that I would be 1) hungry and 2) too late for lunch and too early for dinner, I planned to have this meal last me for both lunch and dinner, which was the perfect decision. There were a variety of curry, meat dishes, veggie dishes, samosas, rice and naan, masala tea, rice pudding, soups, etc - everything you would hope to be there. There wasn't an overwhelming number of foods you could try which is also sorta a good thing. After two plates, I felt like I pretty much had tried everything enough, and was feeling at peace with how much I had eaten. I then had rice pudding and more tea to top it off, and then I started feeling really full. Pros: Spacious enough so that you don't come out smelling 100% like Indian food. Lots of seating, in addition to the fact that it wasn't packed - we were seated pretty quickly. Indian lunch buffet total was like $13.75 (before tip). I came with two other friends and they were able to split checks among all 3 of our credit cards pretty easily . So in conclusion: buffet that serves both the purpose of being tasty and putting you into a food coma after. I can see why people like it! read more

The rice in the Chicken Biryani was dry, the kind of dry that comes from sitting in a fridge for a while; the chicken was a little dry as well.
