Tried Akbar for takeout last night for the first time and I've gotta say, of all the Indian spots on Charles St, this is probably my least favorite. It's not that it was bad necessarily, other places nearby are just better in my opinion. We ordered two chicken tikka masalas, garlic naan, and paneer pakora. I was disappointed to see, upon returning home, that they only gave us one side of rice for two orders of chicken tikka. That seemed a little strange to me especially since each order of chicken tikka was almost $20. The sauce had nice flavor but the chicken was tough and didn't fall apart like others I've had in the past. I would've preferred butter chicken but couldn't find it on their menu - maybe I just overlooked it or they have it listed under another name? The paneer pakora was OK, the breading was super thick and not crispy enough. The mint cilantro chutney it came with was unexpectedly spicy. I can handle my spice but I've just never had green chutney have that much of a kick to it. I didn't try the naan but my boyfriend said he's had better. All together it was $60 which seemed a little steep for what we got. The inside is surprisingly cute though and they do offer a lunch buffet. Would I return? Probably not just given the other options in the area. read more

$15 dollar lunch buffet on a weekend? That's 3 stars of the 4 right there. But we happened upon this restaurant when we were in the area and stepped in for the lunch buffet. It wasn't an extensive offering but it had the classics. Chicken tikka masala, paneer saag,rice, pakora, etc. So it's both vegetarian and non vegetarian friendly. It was a little sad to see the place empty. In my opinion their lunch buffet is definitely worth checking out. Food tasted great and service was attentive. read more

I've passed this tucked away spot for years but finally stopped in for dinner before a Center Stage show one night. The staff was very friendly and welcoming -- helpful when we had questions, and quick to get us anything we needed. We ordered the fish pakora and chicken tikka masala, and were very happy with the flavor, especially the rice! The fish was slightly salty but sauces helped offset the seasoning. Otherwise the chicken masala was fantastic and the naan was also a pleasantly large serving that was perfect with the amount served for the entrees. read more

I visited this restaurant with a friend from Kerala, India. According to her, their dishes are authentic northern Indian dishes. The lunch buffet was nice! Especially, their chicken tikka masala was delicious. Yogurt seems to make the dishes mild despite the use of many spices. Their mango lassi was also nice. The person there was kind and attentive. this is one of the best experiences i've had at a restaurant in a long time. i went here with a friend on a quiet wednesday evening where there was only one other group in the restaurant. the service was excellent, everyone was super polite and kind. i ordered the indian tea to start, which was surprisingly sweet in a brown sugar-type way. they also brought us some thin crackers with a variety of condiments to start. for my main, i ordered the chicken xacutti and plain naan. the portion size was good and the flavors were complex. i ordered medium spice and i would say it was more along the mild end, but you could still taste it. i also tried my friends platter, which included dal, a samosa, and gulab jamun. i was quite impressed by the gulab jamun; although inconspicuous it was the best gulab jamun i've ever had! the lighting was a perfect level of dim and it felt really upscale inside. i would recommend this as a good date night place or a place to take your family. i will certainly be back here again. read more

Service was good. I came in to pick up a takeout order for Kerala Pepper Chicken and Chicken Vindaloo. I did not get bread when I ordered, so I asked them to buy it there and it was out pretty quickly. The food definitely was tasty, but I was disappointed that the Kerala Pepper Chicken was on the menu as having fenugreek in it and actually did not have any. It was probably curry leaves that were actually in there, which is fine and common in this dish, but they are different things so I was kind of let down because I was craving the taste of fenugreek. read more

I tried theirs Sunday Buffett. Parking was hard to find. Buffett was very basic with and with very limited items and does not look clean. I tried Naan, paneer, chicken Tikka, and Veg korma. It tastes good. I wish they charge more and add more items. Service is decent. read more

So glad I found another hidden gem in my area! Since COVID I've been deprived of eating out, especially at any sort of buffets. I'm happy to know that this restaurant offers their lunch buffet again! I love to have variety when I eat Indian and they have it all. Their buffet is stocked with great staples like palak paneer, tandoori chicken, butter chicken and even gulab juman. Every time I visit, their staff is very attentive and the food is always refilled right away. Their manager is great about providing good service and keeping their customers satisfied. A hole in the wall gem is an understatement. First off it's underground lol. To start off the flavors were so good we took the leftover Sauce not protein (there was no protein left) home in a container! I ordered the garlic naan, paneer, and Lamb . The lamb was absolutely soft but the paneer curry was amazing. Both dishes came with rice. The environment feels very private. It reminds me a lot of a traditional Italian restaurant. We were in Baltimore for a few days this past week, and due to COVID we mostly enjoyed takeout meals from restaurants walking distance from our hotel. It was kind of great actually, because we tried some really excellent restaurants, including Akbar. We ordered ahead on their website, and the food was ready on time when we arrived. (It appeared they were open for dine in, and the restaurant was really charming, cozy, and beautiful, and I'd love to eat a meal in sometime!) We tried three dishes - Goa Fish, Crab Malabar, and Palak Paneer - all medium. The Goa Fish was great - the coconut in that! And the fry on the chunks of fish! This was my favorite. My husband preferred the Crab Malabar, which I also enjoyed. We both liked the Palak Paneer as well. Our dinner came with plenty of rice. Overall, it was a good meal! They had a lot of traditional dishes we were familiar with but we tried a few seafood dishes to try something new and enjoyed them both! When I say I am very disappointed it is an understatement my sister and I went in today to beat the lunch crowd and after fixing our plates and blessing our food I noticed a huge (RAT) running up the middle of the floor I said to my sister my eyes are playing tricks on me but then we both notice the RAT running back down the middle of the floor towards the buffet set up the staff came right behind it with their phones using their flashlights to search for it they never asked why we were standing in their chairs yelling which left me to believe they know they have a rodent problem they never even apologize to us as much as I love their food I will not be returning to this establishment again. read more

Only the second time that we found yelp-wisdom a little bit misleading. It was really a bagful of events that resulted in a rather subpar experience at this establishment that was rated quite high by yelpers. THE FOOD: Weekend lunch buffet which really falls short on choices for vegetarians. Three three main entrees - black lentils, peas+potatoes, and spinach - were all generic, kind of cold, and not much of anything else. Sorry, let me add one more - tofu disguised as a masala paneer dish (see pic). Aargh!!!! The app selection was also very poor as compared to a typical Indian weekend buffet at other places. Lentil donuts (Medhu Vada) did not have the right accompanying soups (sambar) or chutneys. THE SERVICE: We arrived here around 2:30 pm on Saturday (they close for lunch at 3:00pm). Apparently it was too late for us to order a la carte and we were steered towards the buffet. Alas, on top of that, they hurried us through the meals. I bet you their dinner service is better. Perhaps, if we had arrived earlier, we would have enjoyed warmer meals. Nevertheless, not keeping the buffet spread warm is not forgivable for Indian food. If you are a vegetarian, be prepared to get underwhelmed with their buffet choices. read more

You can always order out or decide to eat in but whatever I decide to do, I've never been let down. As you descend down into Akbar, you'll find intimate tables close to each other and I've always had attentive service. If you are staving, I recommend ordering a shurat appetizer because everything is prepared fresh and may take a few minutes. I try to venture out from my favorite dishes and it all seems to be pretty good. Last time I tried a chicken dish and the lamb meatballs that came with a really good yogurt sauce. It was steamy as they brought it out to the table and I almost didn't get a good snapshot of the dishes :-) read more

This was always our"go-to" restaurant. We loved the food and got to know the people who worked there. Unfortunately, it's not the same. The warmth we felt is missing. attempts have been made to spruce up the decor, but the shabbiness was part of the charm. The food is also different, but we actually really liked it. The onion kulcha was better than before. Our server was a member of the family that owns Akbar now and he was great; personable and eager to be helpful, so that was good. There is a bar, but they really don't do cocktails, although our server tried his best to make a martini. Stick with wine and beer. We'll probably go back because of the server and the decent food, but we miss the old place. read more

I found this through an online search; I wanted an interesting restaurant close to the Walters Art Museum, as my Son and I were spending the day there. We walked the 3 blocks and here we are! A cute little basement restaurant, good rating stickers all over the door. We were hit with the smell immediately. The amazing smell of good Indian food. This was only the 3rd time I've gone to an Indian restaurant, and it was truly wonderful. Service by 2 different waiters was perfection. very friendly and gracious. We decided to try a few appetizers and 2 entrees. My son is a vegan and there are plenty of options for the vegan diner. I am an omnivore and I loved the extensive menu - so much to decide from made it a little difficult to choose. Appetizers in order of our favorites: Samosa Chaat, Aloo Tikki, Mulligatawny Soup. Entrees: Bengun Bharta (Mashed Eggplant/spice blend/pullau), Pullau Begam Bahar (lamb/chicken/shrimp/spices/almonds/raisins) I had a Taj Mahal Indian lager beer which was much sweeter than an American lager.
