Out in Baltimore, I am visiting my sister for the week and excited to see what the city has to offer as far as food goes. One place my sister raved about was Lumbini. She doesn't have the same palette as I do for food, but when she mentioned a buffet for $16, she was definitely speaking my language! The restaurant is located in the heart of downtown, and it is dripped out in Indian/Nepalese decor. Really tall ceilings, there are plenty of seats, and even a full functioning bar in the back. My favorite detail in the Lumbini is the huge chandelier hanging in the front of the restaurant. Service was great. There was only one person taking orders and running food out, but it wasn't incredibly busy. Most people were coming for the buffet, and there was no need to take orders for that. The waitress just showed me where the plates were, and I went to work! Wow people the food here is phenomenal, and they have such a wide variety of options for the buffet that it is absolutely a steal. My personal favorites were the Chicken Curry, Chicken Tikka, Sang Paneer, and the Samosas. Everything here was amazing. It is somewhere you have to go when visiting Baltimore! read more

I ordered takeout via DoorDash and chose the Chicken Tikka Masala and Shrimp Korma.. I can't say I was completely satisfied. One thing I've noticed is you do not have the option to select spice level.. That would have been nice to add a kick. The Shrimp Korma came with 5 shrimp and broth the consistency of soup, lacking the nutty flavor and texture I'm used to with Korma across the board. I probably wouldn't order this again. Got to try a series of wonderful dishes! Two different kinds of momos (dumplings): fried and steamed - were both flavorful and awesome. I personally liked the steamed ones, but I think many will enjoy the deep fried version of it tossed in spices and sauce. Goat curry was also on point. My favorite was their Nepali style chow mein. Spicy, but the flavor was awesome and I couldn't stop eating it. No worries, because the pudding at the end cleans your pallet and refreshes everything. I love living on the same block as this Indian/Nepali restaurant on Charles St. I highly recommend it. They have a solid command of the Indian food basics, reasonable prices, and always provide courteous, attentive service. I'm trying to start a trend of getting Indian food when one goes to jury duty #jurycurry. Spread the word. This place happens to very close to the Baltimore city courthouse. I'm a pretty adventurous eater but I usually stick with Saag Paneer or Palak Paneer when eating Northern Indian/ Nepalese. Their Saag was delicious. I should also note that I ordered it "spicy" and I was delighted by the level of heat. it was just enough coax a few beads of sweat off my brow. I loved the atmosphere. Went here with a friend for lunch and even though we were the only ones in the restaurant for most of the time we were there it still took quite a long time to get our food. That being said it was all very good. We split several dishes: samosas and a salad for appetizers then Fish Tikka Masala and Tandoori Chicken for main dishes plus an order of naan. The Tandoori chicken was nice and juicy (this dish is often dry and unappetizing), the Fish Tikka Masala was quite fishy but the sauce was a good compliment, the samosas were fine, and the salad was tasty and fresh. Overall I'd recommend and would definitely come back here but just not when on a time crunch. read more

I'm a huge fan of dives and hole-in-the-wall eateries. The kinda of place that you would walk by and never know the mistake you made in passing it over. Lumbini sounds Italian and the green awning supports that thought. However, the most delightful and amazing authentic Nepalese & Indian dishes await you inside. Walking over several blocks from the office, I was pleased with with quiet and classy layout of the restaurant. While only a few tables had patrons, the lunch crowd soon came in. Yet, the noise level was never overwhelming. Lunch is a buffet and while I sampled the traditional items - naan, chicken marsala - the most delish was a spicy chicken choila. It had enough spice to remain in the mouth and open the sinuses but not enough to overrule the flavor. The hot Nepali Tea was also a nice surprise. With the consistency and look of coffee, this should be savored. Don't hesitate to make Lumbini one of your frequent dining delights! read more

I had dinner here once. The food came out extremely slow and had to take it to-go because I imagined I would come and dine for one hour, but it took 50 minutes for the food to come out. Nonetheless, the food was excellent and thought I'd give this place another try. Then comes today. I went in for lunch before noon and the same server showed me to the same table as last time. The place is quieter than other Indian buffets and less claustrophobic since it's more bigger. The food is actually better and seems healthier than other places. This review is based on delivery (through Grubhub). Delivery was quick and polite and the food arrived piping hot. We ordered two entrees (mutter paneer and gobi Manchurian) and single orders of butter naan, kheer, and mango lassi. I'll review each element separately but collectively, the meal was delicious. The servings were all exceptionally generous and the flavors, while mild, were delicious and balanced. Mutter paneer (served with rice): Creamy, rich, and mildly flavored. I prefer a more red mutter paneer but this was a good creamy version. The sauce is thick and and luscious, with gentle notes of cashew, tomato, and cracked pepper. Don't let the pepper deceive though, the cream lulls out any heat. The peas were perhaps 2 minutes overcooked: not mushy but they didn't have that bright freshness either. The paneer was drier than I would prefer, but was generously heaped throughout the dish which I greatly appreciate. Gobi Manchurian (served with rice): This will never be ideal for delivery. The precious crunch inevitably fades to a slightly greased limp. I was a little surprised to see a mix of cauliflower and broccoli but was unbothered (and honestly they tasted the same). The fried crucifers, peppers, and onions, bathed in thick and tangy tomato-based sauce that hung somewhere between a paste and a glaze. Spicy but balanced and the aromatics remained crisp and refreshing. Naan: Generously sized, this was a superb naan. Fluffly, pillowy, and fresh. It wasn't over-buttered or over-charred, as many naan are. It had the perfect bite and sturdy texture to scoop up all the thickly sauced bits. Mango lassi: My least favorite part of the meal, this lassi tasted more like a thinned yogurt than what I picture for a mango lassi. Sour and thick, the mango was a quiet second string to the yogurt. A good drinkable yogurt, but that's not the item I intended to order here. Kheer: HUGELY portioned in a drinking cup. The pudding was bright, mild, and fresh and the rice were perfectly cooked to a gentle bite. I would have personally liked to see some cardamom or rose-water here but that's just personal preference. read more

I ask to sit a little away from the door n another couple. the guy says no in case they want to put the tables together for a group...they were not busy at all!! Ok so we sit where they want us to n tell him we have a groupon which we got as gift. ..he says we need to order an appetizer n 2 main dishes...this was not written on the groupon or online...n he wanted me to bring up the coupon on my phone...I tell him we got it as a gift!! A little while later a white couple comes in n the younger waiter sits them at the table I had asked earlier to sit at. They seem to be nicer to the white customers. I was game because I'll confess that I never ate at a Indian Nepalese / Himalayan restaurant. I ran there and found that it is a cute small restaurant that actually has a loft to eat besides their main floor. I looked over the menu and while my co-worker decided to order the Chicken Daal (boneless chicken pieces cooked with lentils) I ordered Chicken Dhania (boneless chicken pieces cooked with Himalayan spices and garnished with cilantro). On the side, we ordered the butter naan, a baked leaven bread...all I can say is that THIS BREAD is crazy addicting especially when it's warm, buttery, fluffy and so goooooooood. Our hostess was really helpful and assured us that we would be satisfied with our choices. The chicken dhania is full of flavor and the basmathi rice was perfect (which looks so similar to jasmine rice). Overall, I didn't find anything wrong from our service to the food! Customer Service: Quiet, Friendly, Efficient Prices: Reasonable Location: Perfect little restaurant on Charles Street Ambiance: Clean, lighted and despite it being small, it was just right Food: Stellar food! I came here this past weekend and had a great dinner. I wasn't expecting a whole lot since they were on Living Social, and sometimes restaurants on there are on their way out of business...but Lumbini exceeded my expectations! I ordered the chicken tikka masala and it was very flavorful. It was a little skimpy on the meat, but still good overall. My entree also came with rice, a salad and raita (yogurt that helps with the spiciness of Indian food). We also ordered a side of the garlic naan and it was really tasty! This might actually be the best naan I've ever had. It had plenty of pieces of garlic and green onions on it. I also tried a bite of the lamb vindaloo and it was spicy and the meat was very tender. Prices were reasonable at around $40 including tip for the two of us. And as for parking, theres metered parking out front. I thought I would have to head back to MoCo for some good Indian food, but turns out Lumbini was a great option right here in the city. Can't wait to come back to try the lunch buffet! read more

Once again, here is a Nepalese restaurant that serves Indian as well as Nepalese dishes. I was craving Indian and was happily satisfied. Our dishes, malai kofti and chicken tikka masala were awesome. The malai kofti consisted of 3 soft dumplings made of nuts, vegetables, herbs and golden raisins in a rich creamy golden sauce. This was amazing! The chicken tikka masala was tender and the sauce was rich and scented with freshly grated ginger. You can tell that the kitchen grinds and uses fresh spices. Each dish was fragrant and perfectly executed. The butter naan was soft, buttery and bubbly. A bonus here is the Nepali Tea, a creamy, lightly sweet and spicy/earthy tea - I guess like a chai. This was like a dessert. The night we ate at Lumbini, it was quiet and only a few tables were occupied. At first, I was a little worried, but the food was fantastic. I found one on Yelp at the Lexington market or close to it but after I got to the market I found myself in a neighbourhood that made me quite intimidated. I've been in Baltimore for 4 nights and never felt particular threatened but I got out of there and headed to this one on St Charles. Lumbini is my second favorite Indian buffet in the Mt. Vernon area, coming in real close behind Kumari. A quick comparison: Both offer unlimited chai tea as part of the buffet.. Selection is pretty similar, except Kumari's desserts are far better. On weekdays, Kumari is $1 cheaper, but its price goes up on the weekends while Lumbini's stays the same. In summary, if you want lunch buffet on a weekday, hit up Kumari because their kheer is amazing. If it's a weekend, go to Lumbini because you'll get pretty much the same thing at a better price. Anyways, back to Lumbini. Best thing about this place = metal trays. Ditch the sissy plates and load up one of these babies to really feel like you're getting your money's worth. Their ~$3 mango lassi is thick and tart. It tastes like real mango, none of that artificial stuff. As others have said, the chicken in the tikka masala can be a bit dry, but they have several delicious vegetarian options as well as the occasional goat or cod curries. They only have regular naan, but I prefer it to the garlic kind so that's fine by me. In the dessert section, they usually have kheer, some carrot-based dessert, and the dough balls in syrup. I'm never terribly impressed by any of these. Rating Breakdown: 1.5/2 Stars for Taste - I'm a huge fan of desserts so the lackluster kheer really detracts from this place. It lacks flavor and has a consistency that is more on the watery side. I've learned to avoid the chicken, which can be on the dry side, and load up on vegetables and curry-soaked carbs instead. 1/1 Star for Value - For a $10 buffet, this is as good as it gets. Whenever I go to other Indian restaurants and buy an entree for over $10, I think to myself...wouldn't I rather spend this money on the buffet at Lumbini? Frankly, the answer is almost always yes. 1/1 Star for Customer Service - The waiters always keep your water glass full. I brought a Indian-buffet virgin here once and the waiter patiently explained how mango lassi is not, in fact, mango juice. Management is cheap, rude, ignorant and incompetent. Food is okay. Definitely not worth the hassle of dealing with the pathetic management. They increased my order delivery amount by 25% without consulting me, then were adamant on not changing the order amount to the original unless I cancel and reorder. When I tried to order again, the manager refused to take my order saying that the delivery man doesn't feel like going out again. Looks are simple (lamb in sauce), but spices were a wonder, tender yogurt marinated lamb cubes, buttery, tangy, creamy, lemony sauce; a little tart, a hint sweet with coconut milk, savory with curry spices. The Nepali Thali "plate", selections of various dishes are so worth a try, get them to share.
