Hosted my daughter's bridal shower here. The function room is so pretty as are the grounds. Katrina, the function coordinator, was the best. I wanted a tea party. Katrina worked with us to have mini-tea sandwiches - chicken salad, cucumber, smoked salmon, fig and goat cheese. She provided gluten-free and dairy-free options. I wanted to have three different kinds of tea on each table and she was fine with that. We provided our own tea pots that we had thrifted. Katrina decorated the room with napkins in the wedding colors. She even made the napkins at each seat into roses. They were placed on each plate and looked lovely. We brought in our own scones and mini pastries. The mimosa bar was a hit. The staff was great - all very friendly and helpful. At the end, they emptied and rinsed all our tea pots so they would be easy for us to get home. I thought the price was very reasonable. I highly recommend the venue and Katrina and her staff. I am trying to think of another excuse for an event there! read more

Mt. Hood was amazing accommodating a last minute request to host Junior Prom pictures due to bad weather. Grounds were in perfect shape for the outdoor shots and we were able to use the function room for indoor pictures when the rain started. So thankful for their flexibility! read more

This is not a current review, but when I was a kid I often snuck onto this and other area courses including Cedar Glen, Unicorn and Sagamore. Most of the time staff looked the other way. We stayed away from other golfers (possible then) and golfed free. Very hilly as the name suggests. Later I played it with my uncle Dan Walsh. Great memories. I think the pro was Rollie Hancock. I live in California now but still play it now and then (paying). read more

Very disappointed that the golf course decided to do away with non resident senior citizen discounts. When I inquired why I was told the city of Melrose made them stop that practice and when I asked the cities mayors office why they said it was the golf course that made the decision. Played the front 9 Holes of Mount Hood and would come back again to explore the back 9 holes. It was twilight hours so only $35 and $6 for push cart rental. Mount Hood is well maintained with consistently smooth greens that provide nice roll. The course has a beautiful sunset view of Boston and has a little castle at hole 8 you can walk up to see the skyline. It's not overwhelming challenging but had narrow fairways and plenty of trees. My ball hit a tree and it bounced backwards but luckily still in bounds. It definitely provides a nice challenge to beginners. Deciding to walk this course made it more difficult because of the hills but very glad to have gotten 3 miles of steps in. It did feel like a nice hike in the woods so bring bug spray especially during twilight hours. Needless to say I will be renting a cart new time to play 18 holes. read more

I'm not from Boston, but after golfing at Mount Hood, I can understand why the locals call it a "hidden jewel." Visiting from LA and being not familiar with the area, we took a chance and drove to the suburb of Melrose to golf here. Here's a rundown: Staff: I talked with the people in the pro shop, the lady running the snack bar, the cart girl, a groundskeeper, the rangers, and the starter. I mean it when I say that EVERY SINGLE ONE of those people were friendly, kind, helpful, and authentic in their conversations. Food: Smash burger and fries. Need I say more? Golf Course: Great condition, greens were well kept, fairways were good, and it was challenging. Enjoying the scenery was a good trade off for a bad shot. Some of those trees actually saved me from a worse shot. We only played the front 9, but I'm sure the back 9 was just as nice. Overall, go play this course. I apologize now to the locals who want or keep it a "hidden gem" but hopefully more outsiders like me will get to have the same experience as I did. read more

Nice course, loved the layout but they charge way too much. My golf bag got lost in the airline and so I rented the worst set of golf clubs that were probably 30 plus years old (not exaggerating). I felt like due to my situation not charging me for the old rental set would have been a nice gesture. I had just flown 3,000 miles only to not have my own set with me due to airline mishap... Played the front 9, then went to see if I can play the back and she wanted to charge me again for the crappy rental set. I said never mind and won't be returning. $140 for 9 holes w/cart, rental set, tees and golf balls...sheesh. read more

I haven't played at the course and doing a review for an event. I attended Easter morning sunrise church service and mount hood graciously hosts the church and the community for morning church service. Directly after service they provide coffee and pastries in the snack lounge. The staff has been friendly and helpful. Bathrooms are clean and I'm looking forward to next year! read more

Ive played a lot of courses and truly have never had a worse experience. Paid $80 to wait at each tee box only to then be hassled by the starter that we were "falling behind and needed to pick up the pace". I may not be a pro but our foursome are not bad golfers, yet the pace they were apparently expected to maintain was simply outrageous. They clearly are booking too many tee times with not enough time in between, trying to squeeze as much money as they can at the expense of the experience. We were hassled again on the back 9:00 by the same starter, when we asked if the group behind us was right on our tail he told us that they had to wait for a minute to tee off, which is something that is expected at every single course ive played before, especially when the tee times are crammed with less then 10 minutes in between. Stressful, longest 18 holes I've ever played, felt like if you didnt hit perfect shots and get par the starter was gonna get back on you. On top of all of this, you'd expect with the high price point and amount of tee times theyre jamming in every day theyd have the money and the decency to maintain the course. Cart paths are all beat to absolute shit, rough isnt maintained well. Will never be coming back here and would not recommend it to anyone. read more

Decent scenic course within a short drive from the city. One of the few 18 hole options that's a municipal course. We arrived early to have lunch on the clubhouse patio. The food was ok. Basic sandwiches and typical appetizers. Service could of been a bit better, our order was done but was missing a sandwich, then it took another 10 minutes. Panini's were cold in the middle. On to the course..It was confusing finding the way around to the start off. There was no starter waiting, so the ranger drove by and told us to hop in a cart and proceed to the first hole. The vibe was very relaxed. There was a backup from our tee time by 20 minutes so we waited a while to tee off, then waited at practically every hole and the same with the party behind us. It made for a slow game. The course was in good shape. I liked the layout. Some hills but long fairways and not too many sloped holes. A few ponds and a good mix of different pars, mostly 4's. The surroundings were peaceful. There were signs of the history of the course with old stone walls, even some random fireplaces on the edge of the woods. There is a large stone tower overlooking the course on the 8th hole. The clubhouse has a very rustic look to it with its stone facade and paned windows. Prices were reasonable. It was $28 (9 holes) each then $8 for a cart. I will be back for more play, hopefully without a long wait. read more

**DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!** Under new management. Brian is the rudest inept golf course manager/human being I've ever encountered in my 20 + years playing golf. Ballooning greens fees, Backed up tees... weeds in the bunkers... burned fairways, rude rangers. The course is falling apart, starting to resemble the old "billy goat" course it was nicknamed. Obviously the money is being redirected elsewhere!! Since taking over he's fired all of the previous starters and replacement them with high school kids with no experience. He's also begun destroying leagues that have been loyal customers for decades. Some over 30 years! Golf at Mount Hood was such a better place before handing the day to day operations over to a completely incapable human. It's a terrible experience playing there now. This review comes after viewing and being involved in numerous interactions with Brian. Also from conversations with his staff who agree he's out submarine the golf course and patrons. I'm a huge fan of "The Hood". It's always among my top choices when considering a golf outing with pals and here's why: 1- It's an easy drive from Boston. 2- Its affordable 3- The staff is friendly and helpful (and this is important. Try dealing with the staff at Leo Martin in Weston, and you won't take a friendly staff for granted again). 4 - The course is interesting and challenging. It's forgiving enough for a high handicapper like me (I shoot high 90's), yet more advanced golfers that I've brought there enjoy it too. 5- Amazing views of Boston 6- The clubhouse is cool. There's a great little bar (with big flat screens and a friendly barkeep) in a really neat old stone building. In the Summer, it stays nice and cool. Cons: no driving range, can be pretty wet through mid-May, not the easiest place to find without GPS. read more

Terrible terrible experience this Sunday. Wife and I tried to play 18 holes. When we made the turn they put a tournament out in front of us and told us we have to take a rain check and can't finish our back 9. When I made he tee time I confirmed it was for 18 holes... the moron in the pro shop told me 18 holes... spoke to the starter for 20 minutes on the first tee and we spoke about how things will open up when we play the back 9. Someone screwed up and they wouldn't refund our money. Terrible and unprofessional way or doing business! I argued to the guy in the pro shop how we don't live in this area and will not be able to even use the raincheck before December 2016 he could care less and made this entire scenario the fault of my wife and I. The kid in the pro shop also told me he could refund my entire purchase of 18 holes... but he won't and we can live with the rain check or call the professional Monday. Looks like we will be talking to the pro next week... play a different course! read more

Course was in good condition. Paid $65 for 18 with a cart but the round ended up being 5 hours long due to a slow group in front of us. Worst of all, they wouldn't let us pass and the rangers (two teen/twenty year old girls) didn't seem to care. Overall, the course is exciting to pay with a few challenging holes although the greens are receptive which makes things a bit easier. However, I would suggest the the staff enforce playing through and kindly suggesting that the weekend warrior slugging beers pick up his ball after 10 strokes on a par 4. read more

Normally when I drive through the "Hood", I try to go quickly to avoid getting shot at, being sold fake crack, or being solicited by junkie prostitutes. However, I found my time here at Mt. Hood golf course to be quite pleasant. While the course is somewhat short, there were certainly some challenging areas. The fairways were in decent shape and it was a relatively short drive from the city. One of the best features of the course is actually the view of the city and the harbor that you get from just behind one of the tee boxes. They have this castle tower that you can even climb up to make the view even better. I was impressed. The reason for the 3 stars is two fold. The first is that there is no way that this course is worth $65 dollars to play. It is still a muni course that certainly has its downsides. The second is that the greens were long and furry. You had to smash your putt to even get it to the hole. Like most golfers, I like my greens short and fast. Cut your greens Mt. Hood, this is not a Furries convention, then you can charge $65 bucks per round. read more

We had our daughter's wedding at Mt. Hood on Saturday evening. It was spectacular! We live in San Francisco, and planned the wedding with Laura, the event manager at Mt. Hood. She was absolutely wonderful to work with, and worked very hard to make our daughter's day a huge success. Laura and her staff made sure that the wedding we had visualized happened just the way we wanted. She was always available to answer questions, and often made suggestions that enhanced the flow of the ceremony and reception. When we wanted something a bit different from what was on the function menu, she made it happen. She worked with the caterer to give us a great autumn buffet, complete with two carving stations. We received rave reviews of the food from our guests. In fact, we had nothing but rave reviews about the entire wedding! Mt. Hood has a beautiful event space, with huge, soaring ceilings and a massive stone fireplace. Our daughter's ceremony took place in front of the fireplace, and we had the cocktail hour under a tent on the patio. Laura and her staff turned the room over from ceremony to reception in just about a half hour, even though we had complicated place settings. When we returned after cocktails, the fire was roaring, the candles were lit, and the space was spectacular! The night was perfect. We cannot say enough about the staff. When our daughter was changing into her second dress, a member of the staff showed up at the door with a glass of water for her, because the staff member hadn't seen Kristyn drink anything yet. She wanted to make sure that the bride was hydrated. Thank you Laura and staff.....the wedding was perfect! read more

TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE experience here this past week. Booked a tee time for 18 holes only to be turned away at the pro shop. The course is accepting tee times online for 18 holes and not honoring them upon arrival due to their leagues. Any decent business would either fix the system or find a way to honor the tee time. However at Mount Hood the cohort of old, grumpy, lazy white men enjoy their power trip by telling people that they cannot play their course (even when a tee time confirmation has been presented to them) I had played here in the past and the course would receive a 4/10. Love this course. Bang for your buck, I don't think it can be beat in the greater Boston area. I've played here a few times this summer with two different groups of people and both were very wowed by the course. The grounds are very well kept. The course is absolutely stunning with seriously breathtaking views of Boston, esp from the 12th tee (I think?) with the stone tower. Most of the tee boxes are elevated which makes for great views. The course is perfectly challenging for a mediocre golfer as myself (~100) - nice open fairways but lots of hills and doglegs and such. Forgiving but not too forgiving. No driving range but 15 min from Golf Country in Saugus on Rt 1 if you want to hit a small bucket to warm up beforehand. Snack bar has a decent enough selection of food and beers (both draft and bottle), and there's a huge patio overlooking the 9th/10th holes on one side and a huge flatscreen tv playing golf channel on the other - great way to take a quick break after 9 or relax after 18. read more

This course is so poorly managed and it is a shame. Great layout and challenging holes. Unfortunately, the starters, rangers, and proshop attendants do not care about general course management. From calling to book a tee time to trying to keep up the pace of play, Mt. Hood employees are careless about their attitude towards the course. Tried to golf here on Sunday. Had a tee time at 1230. Did not tee off until 1pm. Starter was completely incompetent and blamed the delay on the proshop double booking tee times. The round took 3.5 hours to complete. Three group wait on most tees. Never saw a ranger on the course. I live in Melrose and will never golf here again. A waste of time and money. Better managed courses in vicinity. read more

You've come a long way, baby. When I was a kid, this place was horrible. Dead grass, crummy clubhouse. Forget it. But several years back, it was bought out and completely re-vamped. Some of the most maddingly (?) difficult holes here. But it's quite well-maintained. 18 holes. All are unlike any others you've played before (OK that may be a stretch). But I find this place hilly, unique, and fun to play. You will too. read more

I played Mt Hood this past weekend for the first time. It was an enjoyable day. The course is in great shape. There were a few wet holes due to recent heavy rains, but otherwise the course was very playable. The greens were all in phenomenal shape. It is a short yet hilly course, par 69, with 3 par 3's on both sides, and just 3 par 5s. A couple of par 4s are reachable by big hitters. But there are plenty of places where an errant shot can get you in trouble. And I found many of them. Play was one of the slowest I have ever experienced. Our round took 5.5 hours which is horrible. We waited on virtually every shot. Most par 3s had a two to sometimes three group backup. And there was no course ranger to be seen moving play along. I drop a star for this. The wow factor of the course is the view of The Boston skyline and harbor, especially from around the 11th and 12th holes. For a quick great view of the city, which is still 10 miles away, climb the stone tower just off the 11th green. Gorgeous. But here, I have a complaint. Old Glory that was flying high on the pole at the top of the tower was severely tattered and torn. I don't know if the golf course is responsible for this tower and the flag, I suspect they are, it needs to be replaced. Everyone knows you should not fly such a tattered and torn U.S. flag. The 19th hole was nothing to write home about. The bar had a strange very narrow layout that made ordering confusing. It was a little high priced as well, as was the golf that ran $68 for 18 holes with cart for the weekend rate. But back to the golf. Overall it is although I played terrible, I liked the course and will go back, this time with my "A" game, and hopefully a quicker pace. read more

Don't get me wrong, mount hood is an amazing golf course. It has an interesting layout and is filled with amazing views of the surrounding area. There is one big problem though. I can't vouch for the course but I recently attended a bridal brunch here and can say that the overall experience was a solid, "not bad." But let it not go unmentioned that my assessment is certainly in no disrespect to the people who funded this event at which I was a guest. The grounds were nice with a small pond and rolling hills leading up to the club house. It's a charming, old stone building with exposed wood beams inside and a stately stone fireplace that reaches to the top of the vaulted ceiling. The corridor leading to the restrooms from the function room was pretty rough and tumble but the bathrooms were spacious and clean. There was coffee and tea, muffins and breakfast breads, orange and cranberry juices (not fresh squeezed though) and strawberry and pineapple salad to start. For the brunch buffet, you had your choice of scrambled eggs, shredded hash browns, roast turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce. To finish the meal, each table was given a plate of mixed cookies and pastries. They hadn't arranged enough trays so our table's choices had been pilfered from various tables around us by the hostess which was awkward. The waitstaff were generally attentive but we had to ask several times when our table hadn't been given enough forks or napkins. Also, there were kitchen staff who kept walking through the function room to access the bathrooms and it was slightly off-putting to see someone in greasy kitchen attire walking right by the bride and groom-to-be opening gifts. Overall, the architecture of the space was lovely and any issues were resolved. read more

Horrible facility in deplorable condition. Had a teetime and teed off 40 minutes late as they had a men's club event that was way behind schedule. Teeboxes were mostly dirt, fairways couldn't be differentiated from rough. Nothing but weeds for any surface that wasnt dirt. Greens were just little circles that were so slow they were a waste of time. Bunkers were grown over weeds , dirt and rocks. I drove a long way to meet a friend there as the place was mid way between us. A total waste of time and money. Took nearly 3 hours to,play the front and I quit and went into proshop to ask for a partial refund. No way. They only offered a 9 hole rain check credit. I gave it to a young kid who was practicing. I would give up golf if I had to play this course regularly. Total crap. read more

It's a shame because this course could be something special. There's been problems for a long time with their tee times which they just refuse to fix. How many times can I finish the front 9 only to find 3/4 groups of a league waiting to tee off on 10? I've argued with the starters to no avail. Ive played this course every week give or take for the last three summers. Solid course challenging and yet still enjoyable. Early in the season the greens can be a bit spotty but after early June everything is in great condition. The clubhouse has decent food and solid beers on tap. Highly recommend for an inexpensive 9 or 18. read more

Getting a 2 b/c the course is usually in good condition and pretty challenging. Other than that don't bother going unless you really wanna play the longest round of your life. Never seen a course like that with staff that could care less. Their "starters" if you want to call them that would send singles and twosomes out all day if they could. I've played there many times and every time is the same....so don't think to yourself maybe he should give it another try. Don't believe the guy in the pro shop either if you call up and ask if you can walk on. He will tell you yes and you will wait 30 minutes minimum before you can get on the 1st tee. Sad that it's such a nice course to play and the people who work their could care less about the people that come there. Someone should let them know there are other nice courses in the area that people can go to so hopefully they can wake up. read more

The note by R.E. talking about penciled graffiti holds true - very inappropriate especially if you have a youngster with you. What an awful experience. I signed up for a tee time online and it clearly stated 18 holes. I even got an email confirmation that stated my tee time and 18 holes. Well, I get there, and the miserable SOB in the clubhouse just shakes his head when I tell him I have a tee time for 18 holes. He said there were tournaments in the afternoon and after I made the turn there probably wouldn't be any room for us to play. I physically showed him the confirmation email and his response was "What do you want me to do?" I told him he should honor my tee time because I would've went somewhere else if I had known I could only play 9 holes. He told me "that's too bad, you shouldn't have made the tee time online." I'm sorry, but how the hell was I supposed to know that there was a glitch in their online system. When I asked for a third time if there was any way he could squeeze us in on the turn, he said something to the effect of, "What, am I supposed to tell other paying customers that you're allowed to cut in front of them?" My response - yes, that's exactly what you should've done. He said it wasn't his fault and tried to blame me for making the tee time online. When I said how bad that kind of customer service was he again stated, "too bad." I don't think I've ever met a more miserable person in my life. Oh, and the course...average at best, and constantly backed up. They have absolutely no idea how to schedule tee times and keep up pace of play. If they got rid of their starter/ranger staff and learned how to take tee times, it wouldn't be a bad place to play on a consistent basis. But as of now, there's no way I would go back. read more

This is one of the better courses close to the city. Located is Melrose it is actually a billy goat course so if you are playing 18 take a cart! You can walk 9, but trust me, cart for 18. Once you get to the 6th hole you forget that you are anywhere near the city with the trees surrounding the fairways. Then on the back nine there are a few elevated tees from where you can see the Boston Skyline. It is really a fabulous view. There are some tough holes, no real carries unless you count some huge rocks/hills in the fairways, but some fun elevated tees. The greens are in great condition. On the weekends you can play unlimited on the weekends after 3:30. read more

Terrible condition. Greens were just aerated and they didn't inform us before we played but still charged full price. The bunkers had chunks of asphalt in it and the fairways were dead and spotty. It looked like someone had a case of beer and drove over it drunk. Reminds me a lot of Leo j Martin in Weston. Do not have an event at Mount Hood. Held my sister's bridal shower here and was highly disappointed/angry. First off, the event coordinator double booked our date, didn't realize until 2 months later, and we were forced to reschedule. The silverware was filthy and we had to request they be washed again. The food was mediocre, and the portions were small. Not to mention the room was freezing and we had to ask several times to please put on the heat. We were told the fireplace would be lit but there were no logs. The staff was helpful, but not very attentive. Every time we ran out of juice or sugar, we had to ask them to be refilled. There was no table to put the opened gifts on, and when I inquired about it, I was told to put them on the floor in the corner. Half of the time we could not find the event coordinator, as she was off tending to other things. Also, potential customers cut through our room (while my sister was opening her gifts) and they were brought on a tour of the place/ upstairs to go over prices. I thought this was extremely rude. Since it was a nice day, there was hardly any parking. Guests were forced to park in the very back of the lot. To top it off, we were over charged $400 dollars (when we were given an exact quote numerous times). Overall, it was a very unprofessional experience and I would not recommend it to anyone. This place is absolutely garbage, don't ever go here. The workers are the definition of garbage. The tee boxes are grab grass, fairways aren't taken care of, greens are fair but only mid season. Prices are ridiculous for what they have to offer and the back 9 is literally in the mountains, golf carts are old dirty and aren't taken care of, everyone there treats the place like crap. Very crowded with mediocre golfers on a recent Sunday . Starter messed up the tee time and appeared to be drinking jack and coke. Cart was covered in penciled graffiti and had seen better days mechanically. Overall it's a nice course with a couple of tricky holes and a good little bar in the clubhouse. Forget about this place on weekends. They use online and telephone tee time bookings which end up in triple tee time bookings. Yesterday tee times were running 25 minutes late and they didn't even have enough carts. 9 holes took more than 3 hours and some holes were 25 minutes from put to the next tee off. Rangers don't do anything, no moving players along....the course doesn't care as they make money..too bad as it is a nice local course...extremely poorly managed. The typical response is "any metro Boston course is busy on a nice weekend"...false...you're course is just poorly managed. read more

Fun little course with some nice views of the city, but there are WAY too many leagues making it a challenge to get a tee time.

I'd give this a solid 3 stars after a late season round in November. The greens were surprisingly still in great shape (not aerated yet), but they still changed full greens fees, despite the course being very empty.
