We had a wonderfully impromptu weekend sojourn to Fable Farm this past Saturday to pick up some local cider and donuts. Little did we know that Fable is also home to a slew of chickens and goats who are packed with personality and pluck, and totally made our day with their sweet and adorable antics! We had a great time watching the animals hang out and peck around their spacious pen enclosure, safe from the masked onlookers who came to gawk at the majesty of farmland critters. Honestly, any interactions with cute barnyard characters is a high point to my day, so Fable gets five stars on that alone! We also loved the local farmer's market that sets up here, and even though it was close to closing for the day, we were able to browse around for a bit. I didn't buy anything, but the produce looked fresh and there were lots of other locally made goods like honey and soaps. We'll be back for sure next time when we have more time to look around at all the offerings! The local cider and scrumptious donuts were our initial mission, and they did not disappoint. The cider was juicy and tangy, and I couldn't stop drinking it for the rest of the evening once we got home. I was able to limit myself to one cider donut (brushed with cinnamon sugar - yum!), but that was so difficult! My boyfriend's mom was delighted with the cider donuts we brought home for her, too. There was a lot going on throughout, including awesome live music, hot apple cider, farm store filled with gourmet products, multiple food vendors, pumpkin cheesecake tastings, and of course the vast orchard where all the apple trees were, which were all located uphill. There were over 10 different types of apples, such as Mutsu, Evergreen, Macoun, Snapdragon, and Honeycrisp. I mostly collected the more unique kinds. I also managed to locate the Pear trees, way behind the hay riding area. I picked Asian and Bosc pears. We went on a hay ride, which was $5 and it was rustic, bumpy, giving a sweeping view of the beautiful orchard grounds. Back in the main area, we had lunch. By this time, lines were pretty long, so we divided and conquered, as well as found a place to sit. I shared Pork Ribs and Fries, which were both very tasty. The Ribs were delightfully tender and well seasoned. Fries were perfectly crispy. One draw back was that most everything at the store and most lunch items were quite expensive. Overall, there were great vibes, and I really enjoyed the views at the farm, apple / pear picking, as well as the hay ride.

Most of the path around patriot's park covered with vendors on both sides. This includes veggies, bread, meat, cheese and everything in between. In addition, there are prepared food vendors that offer stuff to eat there, as well as an interesting assortment of other vendors including mushrooms, teas, coffees, beer, liquor and more. Plenty to see--including showy things like paella making, gots and pizza making occasionally--and it's really just nice to walk around. It's also adjacent to the library, a kids playground (why gets mobbed), and is a short walk from Beekman St. Parking can be a challenge if arriving late however there's typically enough unless it's a crazy weekend (ie: around Halloween). Definitely worth a trip at least once in awhile if you're nearby.

That's all. Just Thursday. Despite today's Thursday drizzle, we did just that and spent an hour or so wandering around the grounds, chatting with the vendors, enjoying the live music, and everything else you do at a Farmer's Market. It's a good-sized market with plenty of space in its aisles and between booths. We saw a big choice of fruit and vegetable stands, meat, dairy, poultry and seafood vendors, plenty of food vendors, and even a few adult beverage booths. The Parlor pizza and Nit Noi Asian food stations were among the busiest vendors. We stopped at Nit Noi and picked up a frozen bag of shrimp dumplings ($16) and a jar of soy chili oil ($5). PRO TIP The Market is located pretty close to the Saugatuck River, and if you explore the grounds you'll find a footbridge that crosses the river and a walking path that follows the river, So if you gorge yourself on Farmer's Market pizza and ice cream, you can walk it off to some degree.

I appreciate that they've added select Saturday dates recently, as it's helpful for those of us working during their usual Thursday hours. My favorite vendor is Riverbank Farm, which offers delicious produce and prepared foods. I was slightly disappointed to find that their winter prepared foods are currently sold frozen, as it altered the texture and taste a bit. We picked up the classic hummus, a carrot sage hummus, pesto, vegetarian borscht, and carrots. The hummuses took about six hours to defrost at room temperature, while the borscht took a full 24 hours and was still a bit icy on top. Both hummuses were great as per usual; I preferred the flavor profile of the classic, which features garlic scapes, while two family members preferred the carrot sage. The pesto was quite oily, so it paired very well with pasta, though it did congeal once it went back in the fridge and required time to sit out again the next day. Similarly, the regular hummus hardened a bit overnight. The borscht wasn't our favorite, but I think that may have been due to the frozen-and-unfrozen nature of the dish. The carrots were delicious! We also enjoyed a vegetable quesadilla from Boxcar Cantina, which came with pico de gallo and avocado slices. The vegetables were fresh and the flavor was yummy, although it wouldn't be my first choice from their menu. While it had a solid amount of vegetables, I would have preferred more, as the edges were either plain or just cheese. We'll definitely keep coming back!

We weren't able to see any chicks or baby turkeys but we did see baby cows and some cute lambs. Muscoot Farm isn't a petting zoo, but the animals do come up to you sometimes if you're quiet and respectful. I was surprised that I didn't see any of their horses and that they didn't have any male turkeys, but we got to see some of the feeding time, and I even got the chance to learn a little about how the Farm used to be run. The farm doesn't require payment, but they do take donations so please donate when you come so that they can continue feeding and caring for the animals and the land, and so they can continue to pay their employees. This farm is a great place, and I hope that anyone who reads this review comes to visit.

I find it hard to pick a fresh pie or food sometimes because the flies are all over everything. You can't wash fly poop off your pie. But the staff is friendly and welcoming and the place is generally well maintained. They hold events, have all kinds of seasonal activities for the public. I look forward to buying a basket of apples and other delicious treasures there every fall. It's great to see families, children having fun there...making new memories. This place has given a generation of wonderful memories to a lucky few who have shared their time there. It's truly an orchard, country store and a country experience.
