When the Brookdale Lodge renovations are complete, this is going to be an incredible experience…read more I first visited years ago before renovations began. The great Brook Room, is incredible-With different levels, quirky design, an actual mermaid room that I hear will still be operating when renovations are complete-I have few words to describe the enormity and beauty of it. The space has an energy to it, and both times that I was fortunate enough to take a tour, when I left I felt something like nostalgia... I can't wait to see it when it's completed! My recent visit was prompted after learning that it is under new ownership and is being fully renovated/restored. The people orchestrating this are doing an incredible job and it looks like it could be a main attraction for this side of the Bay Area/Santa Cruz. This river that runs through the Brook Room, is where a young girl tragically drowned and is said to haunt the lodge. The crew told me that they are keeping her room as it is in her honor There are allegedly several ghosts that over the years people have encountered. I had the honor of speaking with the crew working on renovations, and they all had stories of their own experiences. There are also elaborate secret tunnels that were used by celebrities and during prohibition! Al Capone, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Henry Ford and Herbert Hoover, Joan Crawford, Hedy Lamar, and many other historical figures and celebrities dined here in its prime. The bar has already been completely restored and is equipped with a sound stage for live performances-And just outside a cute outdoor patio next to the river, which includes the allegedly haunted well... The hotel that is fully renovated is just outside of the main building. I didn't view the rooms, but trust me-It is a huge difference than it was before renovations when I visited years ago. I hear that they are planning to complete the full renovations in 2027, and have the entire space open for business. I can tell you I'll be one of the first visitors:)

WARNING: Unsanitary! This hotel does NOT have full mattress encasements to protect the mattress…read morefrom bedbugs, bodily fluids, spills, or allergens. There is a thin fabric top mattress protector instead of the industry standard six-sided zippered mattress encasement. Room 223 and room 114 have stains on both sides of the mattresses. Make sure you thoroughly inspect your bed as soon as you check-in. These mattresses are a straight up health risk. BYOB! (Bring your own bedding) The service of the staff is wonderful. Every employee I interacted with was incredibly kind, well intentioned, and friendly. The location is breathtaking, the onsite amenities (gift shop, bar, live music, diner) are a nice perk. However, the experience was completely ruined by cheap management. The front desk is not open 24 hours, with no front desk hours posted on the website. I wanted to complain at check-out, but nobody was there at 7am. The hotel will charge you $5 for any unreturned keys. They are not even custom keys with the hotel name, they are generic keycards that cost $0.25 each. I know this because I found the exact keys and keycard envelopes they use on Amazon. I truly think they don't use any hotel supplier companies for anything. The housekeepers are clearly given too many rooms to turnover. When you first walk into the room, things look clean at first glance. However, there are small details that would be easily addressed by a housekeeper with enough time to clean, or a housekeeping manager to inspect the rooms prior to check-in. Empty body wash and shampoo bottles, stains and handprints all over the walls, dead bugs in every corner, cobwebs, sticky floors and countertops, stained sheets, stained mattresses, ripped comforter, food crumbs left in sofa bed. Each room was clearly rushed to get ready with the bare minimum requirements for a turnover being met. Considering every single pillow case and sheet had a stain on it, it's reasonable to suspect that improper detergent is being used. Hotel bedding needs heavy duty industrial-grade detergent, not the typical soaps you would use at home. Experienced travelers will notice a lack of that classic "hotel smell" that's a result of the cleaning solutions used. The most important thing management cheaped out on, and THE MOST DISGUSTING part of this place, is that this is the ONLY hotel I have ever seen without a proper mattress protector. Thats right, any bodily fluids, bed bugs, mites, lice, fleas, pet dander, biohazards, etc can get right into the mattress you are sleeping directly on top of. Oh, and per the policy on their website, there are NO refunds once you check-in! The poor staff was essentially helpless and unempowered. They really wanted to make things right but had no way of doing so other than offering another set of sheets and a different room, which unfortunately had the same issue. The ADA lift up the stairs in the middle of the property is broken. I watched multiple senior citizens and disabled guests struggle to operate it, only for an employee to inform them it is broken and non-operational. There is not even an out of order sign on it. A wheelchair user was forced to go all the way around the property to get to his room. I felt bad for everyone staying here. Worst of all, and truly the most inefficient, regretful decision a hotel manager can make, is that any discounts or refunds must be individually approved by management. That is penny pinching to the extreme. You should trust and empower your employees to take care of the guest. If you are worried about employees comping too much or comping when unnecessary, give them a guide or some training! Leaving issues unresolved until management can give a thumbs up just results in angry customers and low ratings. Shame on you for not trusting your hardworking staff. Management, do better. Your decisions are an insult to the hotel industry and hospitality staff. Go manage a Super 8 if you want to be that cheap, and leave this beloved historic lodge to an expert.

We had our wedding here in 2015 and it was magical. The location and the trees were everything I…read morehad dreamed of for our special day. It is not for anyone who cares about upscale furnishings or is fussy. We are pretty easy when it comes to accommodations, we don't mind sleeping on the floor if need be :P for us the most important part was a place that could accommodate 150 for the ceremony and reception and be available for any and all to crash the night. This was it! We had about 90 people crash the night (camping, cabins, and bunkhouses). We had a caterer who brought in their own BBQ rig for the dinner and we danced into the night. We had a campfire and made ample use of the hot tub and sauna. Next morning we used the kitchen and my father-in-law made arepas for all the overnight guests. It was just lovely! They did all clean-up and provided plenty of chairs. It was a little difficult for some the of the older folks to navigate. You cannot accommodate anyone who is not able to climb a minimum of 3 stairs. We've talked about holding another party here in the future because it was so easy to coordinate with Bob and we had such an amazing time. It's about the best deal you can get for such a long period of time to accommodate so many people. We had access to the place for the 30-hr deal and it was cheaper than most of the places I found in SF even though they ranged from 4-8 hours.

Laurel Mill Lodge is totally cool. It was exactly what we wanted for our wedding (summer 2007)…read more We got everything we wanted and more: our choice of caterer, our own wine and beer (they didn't allow booze which was okay, we had plenty of wine!), ability to spend more than 4 hours with friends and family, beautiful setting for the ceremony, dance floor, not making your guests drive home drunk after your party...no other venue offered all this. We rented the place for the Fri - Sunday package. We had our rehearsal dinner Friday night (inside the lodge), the wedding and ceremony Saturday (out in the meadow) and a nice big brunch Sunday (up on the deck) before heading out. I loved that friends and family all got to stay on location so we got the spend the whole weekend with them. So many weddings we've been to you go through all the trouble to get there and then you watch the ceremony, have dinner, maybe dance and are lucky if you get a chance to congratulate your friends. Our caterer stayed the whole weekend and did all the food in the kitchen there without issue (we rented a Uhaul and brought all the food, flowers and stuff with us). We also hired 2 extra staff through the lodge for help during the reception. We hired a great driver (need to find his name) to shuttle people from the 2 big hotels on the summit so that parking didn't get too crazy and so anyone intimidated by the mountain road could park at the Inn at Pasatiempo or the Hilton Scotts Valley. He drove a 20 person shuttle (and we brought a uhaul) so the person complaining about the narrow road must have a really huge car. The cushy cabins are rustic and comfortable. They have king sized beds and running water, bathrooms, heat. Nicely tucked into the redwoods. Very quiet and peaceful. They each have a nice deck so you can enjoy the woods. The other cabins are more camp style - bunkbeds, no bathrooms. Fine for easy going people or those who drank too much! Some friends also brought their own tents and camped in the meadow. We had a big camp fire and enjoyed the jacuzzi and gorgeous night (meteor shower and all!) until wee hours of the morning. It isn't the place for everyone, but it was perfect for us and I'm sure many others. It would be really nice for a family reunion or that type of event too. Yay camp!

We booked the Hilton Scotts Valley last minute for a little two-night staycation from the East Bay…read more After booking, I started reading some of the negative reviews and honestly got a little nervous--but we ended up having such a great experience! The lobby was cute and clean, the staff was friendly, and our room was clean, comfortable, and perfect for our getaway. I actually slept SO well, which never happens for me in hotels! The location was great. We went sailing in Santa Cruz and did a beautiful walk through the redwoods. We also decided to have dinner at the hotel one night and were so pleasantly surprised! The food was great, they have daily happy hour, local beers, and some of the best appetizers we've had at a hotel restaurant. Sid was our waiter and he was wonderful--friendly, attentive, and made our dinner even better! We have four kids and are in the middle of sports season, so it was SO nice to get dressed up for dinner but not even have to leave the hotel. Overall, such a relaxing weekend and a much better experience than some of the reviews had me expecting. We would definitely stay again!

Poor Service, Hidden Fees, and a $300 Smoking Fee Charged to Non-Smokers…read more My stay was extremely disappointing and reflects a breakdown in basic service standards and billing practices. During the stay, there were no towels available at the pool, daily room cleaning was not provided, parking transactions included additional service fees, and coffee from the lobby/breakfast area carried a $5 charge. These issues were inconvenient, but the primary concern arose after checkout. After departure, I was charged a $300 smoking fee based solely on an air quality and humidity detector reading. I do not smoke. During the timeframe in question, I was using a small water-based clothing steamer to remove wrinkles from clothing after travel. The charge was not disclosed at checkout, and no physical evidence of smoking was provided. Hotel staff acknowledged that these types of sensors can be triggered by factors unrelated to smoking. Despite this, no independent review or investigation was conducted, and no additional evidence beyond the detector reading was provided. I was directed to dispute the charge through my credit card issuer. I escalated the matter to Hilton corporate customer service, but the case was redirected back to the same property without independent review. The General Manager did not respond to multiple outreach attempts, including email and a request for a callback. After researching, I found similar complaints from other guests regarding smoking fee disputes at this property, raising concerns about how these charges are determined and reviewed, and the reliability of the technology being used. I support non-smoking policies; however, issuing significant charges based solely on a sensor reading without supporting evidence or meaningful review is not acceptable. This experience has significantly impacted my confidence in both this property and the consistency of issue resolution within the Hilton brand. I would still welcome a fair review of this charge and a good-faith effort to resolve the matter appropriately.
