I bought my road bike from Mountain Man and have had bikes tuned up there about three times. I feel confident in expressing how I feel about Mountain Man as a bike shop: LAZY. I took my time shopping for a road bike and visited several stores. I was impressed with the level of service and the friendliness of the Mountain Man staff. I ended up dropping more than $2K for bike, shoes, pedals, etc. When I asked about a basic fit, the salesman/technician replied, "Oh you know, just raise the seat to whatever's comfortable." Strike One. Seriously? This isn't a little kid's Walmart bike. This is a road bike. Every miniscule detail of fitting will affect how my back, knees, neck, and arms will feel after a ride. Just because I'm a beginner, it doesn't mean my comfort is worth less than an experienced rider. I immediately thought it was weird that the technician doesn't even make a simple seat adjustment for you after purchase. FYI: Bike Works will give you a general fit. The road bike later had a nagging issue so I took it into Mountain Man for a general tune up. The general tune up usually encompasses adjustment of derailleurs, shifting, and brakes. I explained the issue to the staff at the store and was surprised to learn that no one currently on staff knew much about bike mechanics. Not. One. Person. Oh well, at least they're not doing the tune up. The turnaround time for bike service is pretty quick over there, but I'm guessing it's because they don't have as much business as their local competitors. I can now see why. When i picked up my bike and tested it out, the same issue occurred. My annoyance levels began to rise. Again, I dropped off the bike at Mountain Man, but this time purchased a part to hopefully fix the problem. A day later the bike was ready! I was stoked to finally not have this irritating problem. I rolled the bike out to the bike rack, and BAM, there was the issue again. What the hell is going on? There was a loose nut so the bike went back in the store (again). The mechanic quickly tinkered with the nut and sent me on my way out, like I was wasting his time. Was it fixed? No. Now I have to go to Bike Works and have one of their staff take care of this. I get the feeling that Mountain Man does not give a crap. There's an air of lackadaisical work that will keep myself and other endurance athlete friends to stay away. I'm not going back. read more

As a beginning road bike rider I searched for weeks, going back & forth to all of the bike shops in the city to choose a good bike. Finally I decided to purchase a Specialized bike from mountain man. I asked a lot of questions that I thought was relevant. I was told my bike was only a year old & this was the best bike for a beginner. I was told that the bike was brand new 2015 & I was getting a deal. I rode the bike home after purchasing it to try it out. After riding the bike I realized it it wasn't as smooth & great as promised. I also googled the serial number to find out I bought the lowest brand of Specialized bikes, the components of the bike were basic & would not last long, the bike was actually manufactured in 2014 & the so called discount I got was actually the regular price because the bike wasn't brand new. I put the bike up to return it the next day. The receipt says, return only within 14 days & with receipt. When I brought the bike back I explained to the sales associate why I was unhappy & I would either like my $1300.00 back or an ungrade. The sales associate argued with me & even resorted to using profanity. He was very unprofessional & disrespectful. He refused to return my money or help. Luckily myself & my girlfriend have class & continued to be calm. We asked to see the owner when the associate said the owner was on lunch then going to the bank & wouldn't return for an hour or so. I decided to wait. About two minutes later the owner came from the back as if he was there the whole time. He was calm but no help at all. They pretty much said this was my issue that I didn't know all these things. Call it a lie or just say they didn't tell the whole truth & took advantage of the fact I was a beginning biker. I was mostly upset because I spent good money & they don't give a damn about the customer. Believe this is the last time I will ever step foot in Mountain Man Bike & Ski shop. Poor customer service, dishonest & disrespectful. I've already consulted with a better bike shop that has offered to help when I will need to keep my new bike up-to-date. read more

I was not a customer, but I called in a panic with a roof rack problem on my way from Chicago to New York. These guys took the time to listen to my problem and try to explain a fix. Mountain Man might know what they are talking about as a alpine ski retailer, but they are completely clueless about cross country skis. While they won't market themselves as a complete cc ski dealer, they are the only real ski shop in NW Ohio, and they sell the equipment so you think they might have a clue. My wife and I went in for their late season sale to pick up our first ever cc ski packages. We made it very clear we were beginners and had only rented gear a few times. While the overall selection was picked over due to the late season date, They did have the right ski length for the both of us. But the attendant helping us couldn't answer any questions about the skis, the bindings or boots. A slightly more experienced worker helped fit my wife and tried to show the other attendant how to do it. I was fitted for boots and was told they didn't have my size and wouldn't be getting in any more boots this season. I was fine with this because I thought we were getting a good deal on the skis and bindings. They showed us an entry level binding and a higher level more performance binding, but couldn't really tell us the difference other than price. We picked the entry level binding because we felt it would fit our needs. They were out of poles, but I'm not really faulting them for that poles are easily accessed online. My main annoyance is that when I was fitted for boots the attendant failed to tell me that they only carry SNS bindings and since they don't have my size that maybe I'd want to look for SNS compatible boots. Nothing was mentioned about keeping any eye on the types of boots/bindings. When we left the store, obviously my next step was to look for boots online where I found dozens of manufacturers, at multiple price points for boots compatible with NNN bindings. There were so may available, that it wasn't obvious that there were any other type of boots on the market. I guess I would expect a retailer specializing in skiing to be more attentive to something like this, especially for someone who clearly stated they were new and just starting the sport. I bought a reasonable pair of mid level boots at a price point I was comfortable with to get me started. When we picked up our skis after getting the bindings mounted, I tried a dry fit in the basement and found that my boots and bindings didn't work and that is when I started to do more research and found that the workers at MM failed to discuss a very important element of the package. They only carried SNS bindings and I had ordered NNN boots. Only Salomon and Atomic make boots compatible with SNS bindings and there are dozens of companies who make NNN boots, another thing the crew at MM failed to identify. Since they didn't have my size and suggested I look online, you would think this would have been good information to share, unless they really didn't know there was a difference? Once I learned that all of this wasn't compatible I went back into the store where between the three workers in the store, none of them knew the difference between NNN vs SNS boots and bindings. I had to show them why the two systems weren't compatible. Even one of the attendants admitted they didn't know the difference and another attendant was completely indifferent and couldn't have cared less that I had an issue. They questioned why I couldn't buy an SNS boot online, and I replied that I could, but didn't want to spend $300 for a top of the line racing boot and the available size selections were very poor even online at this time of the year. Since none of the attendants could help, I had to leave a message for a manager and we'll see if/when I get a call back in several days when he returns. I am 99.9% sure they don't carry NNN bindings. Still not sure why they only carry SNS bindings when the rest of the free world offers both and the majority NNN. I want them remove the SNS bindings from my skis and source new NNN bindings. If they can't swap them out, I am 100% sure I won't be returning to them to purchase or install the NNN bindings I'll have to source myself. I'm also pretty sure I won't be purchasing any thing from the store going forward. Their sales staff is just taking up space. I guess its sort or like the old adage of not buying seafood at a steak place. CC skiing isn't their specialty. Maybe try them for your alpine gear, but I wouldn't send anyone their way for CC skis. In this case I think they have really dropped the ball and their employees are not the best trained they could be. Another poster reviewing them as a bike shop mention that they thought they were lazy and I would have to agree. Follow up: When I left the store on Mon., the employees had me leave a message for the manager who was to return on Wed. Wednesday came and went and no call. I waited until late in the day Thur. to call and speak with the manager. As suspected the manager was completely indifferent to my problem, unsympathetic, it's my problem. I have visited this shop on many times, as well as many others across the region. I can tell you without a doubt that the majority of the staff has no clue about ski or snowboard equipment. Do some research yourself and go there to ask some questions, you will see for yourself. First example, started shopping for new skis and boots a couple of years ago. Went to mountain man and spoke with a salesperson. As it was my first purchase, I accepted that this guy was an expert. He really pushed some racing boots on me. He also really pushed a size which was painful, telling me that I could go faster, and they would be comfortable when I lean forward. There was never any account for foot shape, skiing style, etc. but I did t know better. I went home and did a ton of research about boot fitting and spoke to some shops around the country on the phone. I went back to check the boots out to apply what I learned. Another guy was working that night. I asked to try those boots on and he returned from the stock room to tell me that it must have been the last one, as there were none left in any size. I then became a little suspicious that the first guy was pushing a size because it was the only size. The new guy then brought out some boots that were about a size or two too big and were obviously from several seasons ago. They were rear entry! I told him they were too big and he said I should wear a couple of pairs of thick socks. Go ask anybody with any clue about skiing and ask if you should wear a couple of pairs of thick socks. I am fricking 49, I am not going to grow into them! Next story, a friend bought a pair of smith goggles at their big sale a few February's ago. He was told they were new stock. He goes out west and realizes his peripheral vision stinks. He tries on his brothers smiths of the same model and then realizes he was sold some goggles a few model years old. He could have gotten a much better deal on old stock on Amazon The last example is when I looked at some snowboard bindings. I will tell you that I have done a ton of research and had some good questions. The sales guy had no idea what canting is. Anyways, the bindings seemed a great deal on a last years model. These particular bindings changed tech in 2013 and then again in 2015. I didn't care about them not being 2015, but was cool with them being from last year, even the year before. So, against my better judgement from past bad experiences, I bought them. I am 1/2 hour from buying them and I notice on the box that it says 2012 by the upc symbol. I immediately called and asked if I could bring them back. They said nope, just store credit. I felt misled about the age of the binding but he said that's just the way it is. I have no interest in store credit from this place. I love to shop local, but I will just either buy online or go to Ann Arbor or up to the shop at the mountain. read more
