I did online research and called around to other equipment shops but no one was as helpful as Chris at Nicols. First, she answered my questions in depth over the phone, even calling the other location to see if they had was I was after. When I went to visit her in the shop, I felt like she was the first person I could talk to who really understood my skill level, and the equipment that would be best suited for me to improve. She took the time to listen to my experiences. When I told her about some of the runs I was trying to do at Boyne, she knew exactly what I was talking about. She was really supportive in answering questions about skis I found elsewhere. I really felt like she cared. I didn't get my skis here (went with an older model), but I bought my boots (Chris helped me pick them out) and had them install the bindings. The prices in the store seemed really fair. I expected them to be high for a specialty, in-store shop but that didn't seem to be the case. My husband made a special request and asked them if they would do the bindings same day. They said they would try (no promises) and ended up getting it done! They also carry accessories and apparel, like snowpants. I am so pleased to have found Nicols! I now have a go-to place in my neighborhood for equipment, gear, accessories, and apparel!

Two terrible experiences with the marine service and parts department yesterday…read more 1) On Tuesday I called about getting a PWC battery. I was told to call ahead of time so they can add acid and charge up the battery, no problem. I was told the battery was $172 (before taxes, etc). I called the next day to order the battery and when I picked it up I was charged $203 (before taxes, etc.) I told the salesperson that I was told the battery was $172, he didn't care, he charged me $203. 2) They add 3% if you use a credit card, but not if you use a debit card or pay by check. No problem, I get it, but I told them you should let people know ahead of time (I would have brought a debit card), the salesperson said "sometimes" we tell the customer (huh?), the salesperson could care less. The salespeople's attitude was that they didn't care at all that they screwed this customer. I'm afraid they have lost a longtime and repeating (PWC and ski package) customer. Maybe business is so good they don't care about customers.

The Ski Company usually has a few pairs of higher end demo skis (very gently used factory demonstrators) available and that's what we opted to buy instead for a price well below list. I have also bought quite a few pairs of skis for myself based on thier recommendations, and couldn't be happier. Prices are always fair. This is the only ski shop I will buy from in MI.

I needed new boots as I had been nursing my Burton boots for far too long…read more I was impressed by their knowledge, their selection, and their willingness to spend time on me, knowing I wasn't committed to making a purchase. I was allowed to try on several different types of boots until I finally settled on the pair I bought. Two days later, I brought my boyfriend in to their tent sale. They gave him the same time and attention, allowed him to try on several boots, look at several different pairs of skis, and allowed us to stay even after they closed. My boyfriend bought skis, poles, and boots and was very happy with the experience. Overall, we were both very happy, and this will be my go-to shop moving forward.
