Never get a dog from Mountain Rose Bordoodles. We had a horrible experience. They are an unethical company that doesn't care for either their customers or their dogs. They are quick to communicate up until the point at which they receive your deposit. After that, communication completely stops. This affected many aspects of getting our dog, the most egregious of which was that we paid for extra training, and they trained the wrong dog, keeping our Zuki for three extra weeks with him receiving no training at all during this time. It's bad enough to make such an incompetent mistake, but the way we found out made it far worse: they didn't even have the decency to call us, and only wrote us a letter that was placed in our welcome pack that we found out about after we picked up our puppy from the airport and had taken him home (see the letter below). They did refund our money for the training only - as no training was done - but no further compensation was given. Despite multiple requests for a follow-up call, we didn't hear back from them at all - so we know nothing about the environment in which Zuki was raised, how he was fed, what kind of kibble he ate, where he slept, his personality, how he was socialized, etc. making us go in completely blind with training him from scratch. We also obviously did not prepare to be training our puppy from scratch, so didn't even have the benefit of the additional preparation. In addition, receiving our puppy at 13 weeks with very little training or socialization really limited the socialization window for us, harming Zuki in the long-run: most research shows the window to socialize a puppy to new environments and experiences goes until they're 12 weeks (or 16 weeks at most). Zuki went from a farm in Utah to a townhouse in Washington DC with a very different environment so having some of this background would have been critical to determine where to start socializing and training him (to ensure we could maximize what little window we had left if any). Imagine finding out they didn't train your dog through a letter after he was already home, and then not even having the decency to get on the phone and answer some basic questions or ask how Zuki is doing. While we love Zuki, it definitely soured what should have been one of the most exciting experiences in any dog parents' lives - the day their dog comes home. And to ensure we both were around to train and socialize Zuki, my husband had to cancel his Thanksgiving travel plans to visit family, breaking a decades-long tradition due to Mountain Rose's error and lack of communication.
I wish that were the end of this review, but there are other aspects of getting Zuki that were also entirely unacceptable. When we saw Zuki on their website, they took over two weeks to respond to basic questions about his personality so that we could decide whether or not he would be a good fit for our lifestyle, and then gave us a day to decide whether we would want to adopt him or not. Given their long delay, Zuki's training - or what should have been his training - started later than planned. As part of the training, we were supposed to receive a report card at the end of each week as part of our signed contract; to receive this report card, we would have to email and call them several times, and then receive it 3-4 days later than expected, with no apology. Their internal communication was also horrible - with differing responses from Richard, the owner, to the admin staff, making it extremely difficult to prepare, know when he would be coming home, etc.
I should also say that the biggest communication breakdown was with Richard, the owner and the supposed trainer of our dog. If the head of this facility can be so unethical, imagine how he leads his team. Meanwhile, they have been busy expanding their operations into breeding sheepadoodles, managing their training program, possibility selling beef dog treats, etc. while they cannot even manage the core of their business. I would never recommend anyone get a dog from Mountain Rose. read more
