Seeing multiple prospective adopters leave without a cat made me question how the adoption process is being handled. I fully understand the importance of screening adopters and ensuring animals go to good homes. However, there is a difference between careful screening and poor customer service. My experience left me feeling like helping cats find loving homes was not the priority. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and works to improve how prospective adopters are treated. She sent me the money to get Miley cremated so she could come back home which is $60 for the cremation. My daughter sent $80 so she could get her nose print and fur clipping. I called her while there and told her that the clay paw print was a extra $30. She said okay and asked for that as well. My daughter sent me the $30 for Miley's clay paw print. I and my daughter paid a total of $110 for her rabbit to come home. We paid on card and left Miley with APF. We trusted APF to make sure our wishes were fulfilled and granted. I was called yesterday August 19, 2026 towards the end of day that Miley had been returned and was ready for pickup. I was unable to pick her up yesterday so I went and picked Miley up today. I arrived at APF around 12:10pm. I walked in and picked up her remains. I was looking thru the bag when I noticed that the paw print was not there. So I walked back in and addressed the issue. They made it feel like I was lying to them and went and checked the receipt and saw that I did pay for it but never got it. Then they said that they will talk with the people tomorrow when they come in and I told them no because it wasn't going to fix the issue it's not like they can do her paw print now as she is cremated. I told them I wanted a refund. They asked me my address and I told them that they could refund it how I paid for it. They said that they aren't able to do that which I found highly aggravating. So they are mailing me a paper check. If this happened to someone who had lost a child in birth and they never did their child's hand and foot print an the child was cremated the parents and family would be highly upset and emotional. This is the same thing. Some people view there animals as there kids and treat them as such. There are no words in which we can express our aggravation, hurt, and there is absolutely no way they can ever correct this for us either. I'm shaking writing this because this is something that we will never be able to look at again. When I look at my dog's paw prints, my cat paw print, I an my daughter will never be able to look at Miley's paw print.

The- shelter tested her with cats after I left and we all made the decision Pearl would not be a good fit- she was very tense around the cat they introduced her to. The employees were SUPER patient and kind, which i appreciated because I was indecisive and nervous (but excited) about adding another cat to our household. The setup to meet cats is unusual-- you go into the room behind the cat cages and can open them one at a time to meet the animals. I thought it was a really good setup. We were asked to wash our hands in between times to avoid spreading germs. They also have reading rooms where you can sit and read to extra shy cats to help socializing them. I didn't look at dogs, but it seemed like they were working hard to take good care of them and socialize them as well. I think if we ever decide to get another animal I'd try here.

The manager there the older, tall, Caucasian woman with short brown hair with highlights or whatever. I came in obviously anxious to make sure she was okay. This woman was so incredibly judgmental and rude to me for no reason like I was interrupting something. I just wanted my cat back that was the entire reason I went to pick her up. The women in the other part of the building were sweethearts. I thought that was that I wouldn't have to go back. I checked the stray page again a few days later to ensure none of the other cats I previously rehomed were brought in since I didn't want them to end up like my one girl I picked up a few days earlier since I am in a much better spot now. That being said I saw a cat that looked like a possible match to a different cat I rehomed. I called and asked for information on the cat. They neglected to mention how old the cat was when I was on the phone with the woman. I drove 45 minutes one way since they said I can come in and make sure it wasn't her. I get there and once again the manager was a problem again with her attitude. I was talking with a different person at the front desk, and she cuts her and myself off multiple times. Manager tells me to go wait over in the area with the chairs with an attitude she has had since she seen me walk through the doors. I wait for my turn to see if I can view the cat, I was curious about. I was told on the phone I could then as soon as it's my turn. I explain the situation again for the 3rd time. The person goes and asks the manager if I can go back to check even though they already said I could. I wait another 15-20 minutes. The manager finally comes in and I have to explain the situation AGAIN! She cuts me off while i'm talking and asks if I have proof of ownership. I explained my proof of ownership and how I rehomed her due to my medical issues. She accuses me collecting cats and then goes on to belittle me and talk down to me like i'm stupid. Proceeds to continue talking for 10 minutes saying a lot of cats look alike and it doesn't mean that it's her. I explained that yes, I understand that but, if one of the cats I rehomed was on the streets I would like to take them back and keep them since I'm physically and financially able to again. She continues to cut me off saying it's not my responsibility and a bunch of other condescending comments that really rubbed me the wrong way. After 15-20 minutes of listening to her she asks how old the cat was I told her and she said no it's not your cat that this cat is a year old. At this point I was livid. I drove 45 minutes one way just to be lectured by someone that has ZERO right to be lecturing anyone. I try to leave, and she continues to go on about how it's not my responsibility if one of my cats ended up at MHHS after I rehomed them. I absolutely cannot believe someone would put someone like her in a manger position. I genuinely hope they find a better manager for this establishment because this entire experience left a godawful taste in my mouth. Please do better. This humane society has gone downhill.

While their fee is a little higher than most, part of it is returned once the adopted puppy is neutered. In retrospect we regretted not adopting Diego's brother as well. My one issue was that because we are seniors, they were concerned as to how we would provide for our dogs as time progressed. We explained that our respective wills provided for immediate family, our daughter and husband, to assume guardianship in the event of our demise or incapacitation. Despite all this, the process turned into what felt like an endless stream of emails about our dog's veterinary files, with repeated requests and questions that were often unclear or inadequately explained. The biggest issue was communication. Several emails were short and on the rude side, others incomplete and confusing, leaving us unsure about what information was actually needed. Rather than resolving things, each exchange seemed to generate another email and another question. A simple phone call could likely have clarified everything in a matter of minutes, but the volunteer in question, Tamara, didn't leave one nor do I have her last name. I completely understand and support careful screening by rescue organizations. The welfare of the animals should absolutely come first. But a thorough adoption process also needs to be clear, consistent, and respectful of prospective adopters' time. In the end, the process became so unnecessarily complicated that we decided not to continue. It's a shame, because we were genuinely hoping to give another dog a loving home. I hope the organization considers improving its communication with prospective adopters.

They were very…read morecareful in the adopter selection process and the checking of the applicant and I am sure that their thoroughness weeded out many applicants but there are certain issues in adopting that are not appropriate. I am sure that the thoroughness has saved many a pup from a bad situation. They were dedicated to the rescue of many lovely little dogs and for that, I am happy to have been a part of them. I recently adopted a little Chihuahua from them, she was from a shelter in South Carolina and came through their gracious network. From the time of my first inquiry with them to adoption I found their communication to be on point, clear, candid, and open minded. I spoke to Jennifer, Nancy, Marge, and others. I From the time of my inquiry to adoption was a time frame of about 2 weeks. My experience was they promptly replied to my emails, picked up my phone calls, would return email me back even late hours into the nights and weekends, this organization is obviously driven by a profound sense of service and devotion. I would probably mention that since they are volunteer driven, if you have your heart set an a pup with them and it doesn't follow up through to adoption, be patient, be kind, and keep trying. It doesn't mean you are not a good person or candidate for a dog! I invite you to keep faithful and remain patient , it will all be worth it in the end once you can connect with your adoptive family member. They are not a for profit business, they are a for-happiness and pro-altruism rescue. They are a 501c3. Offer to volunteer, foster, and keep an open heart and mind. Each dog is a unique individual and I would encourage you to understand that once the time is right you will connect with your forever baby. They followed up with me afterwards, assisting me with procuring multiple medical records from out of state, even going the extra mile to mail me microchip and rabies tags. They even patiently and lovingly replied to all of my updates that the dog they placed with me was thriving. Wow. I'm writing this because I cannot believe the happiness my little angel has brought to me, she came from a tough past and now it is her time to be treated like royalty. The staff love and care for these pets like they were their own. We adopted our first dog in 2011 and to this day, there are still people at the shelter who remember him from when he was there! The trainers do everything in their power to teach the dogs commands to make sure they are well-behaved. One of our dogs learned commands by hand signals while he was there! Also, all of the pets are given full veterinary care, including all their vaccines and getting spayed/neutered. It is part of their policy and NOT ILLEGAL as the clown from New Jersey stated in the negative review he left from 2018. Every shelter spays and neuters their cats and dogs to prevent further overpopulation of "unwanted" pets and also prevent puppy mills. How were they to know that the guy was actually going to get the puppy fixed in NJ?? Disregard his ridiculous review. In the two months that they lived with us, we were never able to touch her. They pooped and peer all over our home (on our bed and various rugs) despite having three clean litter boxes. We consulted with foster people, our vet, the spca- tried EVERYTHING (feliway, cat attract, containing them in small areas)- whatever was suggested and could not stop the behavior. We called Animal Kind and left messages, trying to get there help. No one called us back. Once someone did actually answer the phone and "understood our concerns." We had to surrender them and I cried for a week. They are back on the website with their same initial and inaccurate description. It was a very traumatic experience for us and most certainly for those poor kitties. I pray someone takes them home. And I will never go to Animal Kind again.

Update: After taking our new cat to the vet for a new patient check up, we learned that our cat's…read morepre-adoption health check missed or failed to inform us of a terrible and painful dental infection. Our poor kitty's gums were fire-truck red! She has since received treatment and is doing better! We also learned that it is not uncommon for sick cats to be adopted out of animal kind. I do not fault the main staff, as they have so many cats that they care for and so few people. I am however disappointed in whoever performed the health check. Any vet that could miss a dental infection like that is either under-informed or negligent as checking a cat's mouth is a very routine part of a check-up. So I do not understand how a vet would miss that without acting out of either ignorance or negligence. I sincerely hope they do better going forward
