Very comfortable. Windows opened. They had donuts and gifts for us when we got on. Seats 1-10 are on the east side and sunny, but we got the best views as we got into the mountains. The car had a bathroom, drinks, and the wonderful Darlene to take care of us and fill us in on the history. Beautiful views. Just awesome. Stopped up top somewhere for a nice lunch. Salad bar, several soups, turkey dinner or meatloaf. The sweet green beans were unusual and delicious. Several desserts, warm peach cobbler was good. Very nice people up there doing the lunch. The train trip took about 6 hours with 45 minute stop for lunch. You can walk thru the cars and there is an open car for better views. Went thru 2 tunnels. We bused back from Chama to Antonito. Took around an hour and pretty views also on the ride. So glad we finally took the trip.

My daughters, significant other, and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip aboard the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. We were in Antonito, CO by 8AM to checkin as I was notified to be so we could ride about one hour to Chama, NM, via charter bus. We took this route since my SO lives near Antonito. As soon as we arrived at the train station, we had enough time for a restroom break which had a super long line of older women - just being truthful - LOL, then it was all aboard engine #484. Keep in mind, there are restrooms on the train. Our first docent in deluxe car B was awesome! She was funny. Pointed out features and historical facts in a timely manner. She had breakfast pastries out for us before we sat down. The docent we had after lunch at the halfway point was terrible. I spent most of my time standing with the breeze in my hair in the gondola car. The precipitation the landscape received as of June 27, 2024, made the ride much more enjoyable. It was gorgeous. The buffet lunch at Osier was surprisingly delicious. It was prepared by a women's group. Two adult and two child tickets for the whole ordeal was not cheap: $711.90 which included historical preservation fees in addition to other fees. I only wish the chairs were more comfortable and adult beverages could be bought and drank in the deluxe cars. We arrived back in Antonito at about 4:30PM. I probably won't do it again for a long time if ever again, but I have amazing photos of my daughters and memories I hope I'll not soon forget. Highly recommend.

There's free parking near the F Street Bridge, including fairly large lots on the other side from Riverside Park. We learned a lot about the history of Salida, the architecture, and some exciting historical events all within a few blocks on F Street! It was a beautiful day. The trees were flowering. Tourist season hadn't quite started, yet. It was an easy walk and there was often seating, if needed. Along the way, we passed some lovely eateries. We walked along the riverwalk afterwards, ate at a local restaurant, and bought stuff after window shopping. For those who play Pokemon Go, there were 2 gyms and many Pokestops along the way. That colorful tree (gym) really is a colorful tree! Go find it!

This is a seasonal destination so try to come in the summer when the tours are running so you can walk and climb amongst some of the areas.

A wonderful and beautiful park!…read more Mesa Verde means 'green table'. This national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the best-preserved Ancestral Puebloan ancestral sites in the United States (nps) - it celebrates people. The snowy peaks in the background is San Juan Mountain. We visit multiple Mesa Top Sites, (900-1100, nps). MTS means top archeological sites within this park. We first stop at the Far View Terrace Cafe for bathroom break and also pick up our lady guide; then driving up north, stopping at the PitHouse, ending the tour at the information & research center in early afternoon about 2pm, that includes an hour lunch at Far View Terrace Cafe, with a wonderful view. Two other cafes are the Spruce Tree Terrace Cafe, and the Knife Edge Cafe. The Cliff Palace is impressive. But the tour didn't take us there - only viewed it from afar. I actually bought a mug that changes with heat and a pretty conch bangle from the gift shop. The information center is cool; the museum is ok.

My son and I planned ahead and purchased our First Class tickets several months in advance to secure our seats. The adults-only First Class car had sold out nearly three months ahead, but we were fortunate to obtain seats in the Prospector First Class car, which welcomes families. The First Class experience was excellent and included comfortable your own attendant, restrooms, individual padded chairs, unlimited nonalcoholic beverages, a souvenir insulated cup, and a keepsake gift bag. Guests were also treated to a blueberry muffin at the start of the trip and a chocolate chip cookie on the return journey, which added a nice touch to the overall experience. The scenery is truly the star of the trip. The breathtaking views of the mountains, river rapids, forests, and rugged canyon landscape are unforgettable and worth the price of admission alone. For the best views, I recommend sitting on the right side of the train traveling to Silverton and on the left side during the return to Durango. While the large windows provide good visibility, I found that photography from the seats can sometimes be obstructed. If capturing great photos is a priority, consider choosing seats near the middle of the car so you can easily anticipate upcoming viewpoints. Alternatively, seats near either end of the car offer quicker access to the outdoor platforms, where the best photographs can be taken. Passengers should be aware that the historic steam locomotive creates a fair amount of movement. The train rocks and sways regularly, which is part of its authentic charm, but those prone to motion sickness may want to take preventative medication before departure. The crew advises maintaining three points of contact whenever moving about the train, which is excellent advice. The journey is approximately three and a half hours each way, with several stops to refill water for the steam engine. While passengers are welcome to bring their own snacks, there is also a food and alcoholic beverage car available for additional purchases. This is certainly not an inexpensive excursion. Our two First Class tickets cost just under $500. When the staff asked whether it was our first train ride, I laughed and thought, "Yes, because this is probably not an everyday experience!" However, after seeing the spectacular scenery, I can honestly say it was worth every dollar. When you arrive in Silverton, I recommend heading directly to the restaurant where you'd like to eat rather than wandering around first. Time is limited, and lunch lines can become quite long. Silverton itself is a charming former mining town filled with restaurants, souvenir shops, and fudge stores. While shopping opportunities are plentiful, expect typical tourist-town pricing. Overall, this was a memorable and worthwhile experience that combined history, adventure, and some of the most stunning scenery in the Southwest. If you're visiting southwestern Colorado, I highly recommend making the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad part of your itinerary. It was an unforgettable highlight of our trip.

Considering that I wouldn't have been able to stop if it was the common museum hours like 10 or 11 am open, I was very thankful. Moreover the information they provide within the exhibit in the building (the aerial photos are awesome!), and the great booklet they hand you for the self guided tour through the ruins are excellent. Make sure to have a hat and wear good footwear, as there are no shades and the path down to the ruins are steep. Also don't forget to thank the museum staff, and buy something from the shop to support them!

Julie reached out via email asking what my interests were, and together we cultivated 2 distinct tours, one in the town of Telluride (Ghost + History) and another, which was an excursion. Julie did not disappoint, in fact, both experiences were way-beyond my expectations. Julie was delightfully engaging, very much prepared, and local-lore knowledgable, She was an absolute joy to be around and learn from. Before flying to Telluride, I read Tomboy Bride, which is Harriet Fish Backus' account of living in the mines as an assayer's wife beginning in 1904. Julie built on that historical accounting with a thoughtful discussion, and a tour of some of the less-talked about locations, notably the 'cribs' near the river and their function, along with a visit to the Sheridan Opera House (1913 Vaudeville) and other important locations. The standout experience, for me, was the excursion and hike to Mystic Falls, with historical stops along the way, including a great view of Trout Lake. I include a triumphant pic of Mystic Falls after a relatively easy hike down to the rocks. I cannot say enough about how fortunate I felt to have known and learned from Julie.
