Once Rick opened this gym, my gymnastics and desire for the sport increased so much. When I was younger and attended multiple other gyms in the valley, it was just something to do, there was no dedication, or desire to get to a high level, it always seemed impossible. After training in Region 5, I myself saw how the level of gymnastics was way higher than I had ever seen here in Idaho. The coaches really cared, and supported the athletes in their dreams to become great athletes. Rick opened this gym to raise the level of gymnastics here in the state, for people like me who have a dream, and the desire to compete in college. I have never seen a coach care so much about the athlete's safety and health in my entire life. He has brought in numerous different people to help our gymnastics and physical well-being, like a running coach, nutritionists, physical therapists, and more. He cares so much about conditioning and stretching, because without strength and flexibility, it is so easy to become injured. I have competed at Mountain West for 6 seasons and I have seen the level of gymnastics improve tremendously. Ten years ago, I never would have believed that I could make it to level 10 Nationals, but with the help of Rick and all of his support, that dream came true last year. His current coaching staff is wonderful and everyone is on the same page. He always reaches out to amazing coaches throughout the nation for any extra drills, or conditioning we could try, because he cares so much! Rick is always so funny and makes us laugh all of the time. I would recommend Mountain West Gymnastics to anyone, the team is so close, and supports each other in and outside of the gym. Due to the move from CA, when we began looking for a new gym, we felt that our daughter should ultimately have the last say. After all, she is the one training and we want her to feel comfortable and safe with her coaches. After working out at 3 different gyms, our daughter (age 11 at the time, level 8) chose Mt. West Gymnastics. She has been with Mt. West for almost 3 years now and loves her coaches and her teammates. We have seen major improvement in her skills and we are in awe of the advancements made. Coach/Owner Rick Bonnell is always looking to better the athletes with the most updated training and choosing competition meets to ensure they get the most experience and exposure. At the end of last season, Coach Rick told my daughter and I that she should learn a new Vault. She didn't want to because it was out of her comfort zone. They worked on it this past summer and when she wanted to give up, he encouraged her to stick with it. Well, this season...she executed her new Vault and not only did she receive the highest scores in all her years as a competitive gymnast but she also gained the confidence that even when things aren't easy, put in the work and you will succeed. Our family previously had a competitive gymnast elsewhere in Boise. When we started considering whether it was the best fit or what others might be we were impressed with the consistency of the competitors we saw from Mountain West at meets. Though smaller than many of the bigger teams, it was impressive how consistently the gym was represented on the podium across age groups. As this was important to us when we did look at new gyms our daughter tried out at Mountain West and has never looked back. The level of individual attention and development as young gymnasts and people has been fantastic. When COVID suddenly ended last season Mountain West was great about finding how to safely re-open as soon as they could and for months the only place the kids could go. The challenges of the last year brought ups and downs but the teams got through it together and had a great season. We have been a competitive gymnastics family for over a decade now with 2 gymnasts one boy a Level 10 and one girl Level 7 (retired) both trained separately. Years back our son was so highly accomplished, we had decided to have our daughter train at Mountain West so she could get top notch training that she just wasn't getting in the girls program before Mountain West. After a season of observation we choose Mountain West. And over time it was obvious the owners choose the coaches carefully and it was a good fit for her. Equipment and safety protocols have always been Rick's top priority. After a series of medical issues unrelated to gymnastics, my daughter decided to take a year off to rest, and heal in hopes of returning to the sport she loves at the gym she loves. We have been apart of the Mountain West family for almost 2 years now. We have 2 competitive gymnasts at the gym and spend a lot of hours there! The owners do a beautiful job of keeping the gym clean and family friendly. Rick and Heidi both are so sweet to take the time to explain things to us as parents. The coaching staff there goes above and beyond every practice!! You can see their love for the sport and their dedication to the girls.
