It was not a good experience. Fortunately, that setback didn't stop me from pursuing my dream adventures--Everest Base Camp, Kilimanjaro, and the Inca Trail. That's when I discovered Ian Taylor Trekking (ITT), and everything changed. By chance, I learned that Ian lives near me. I picked up the phone, and to my surprise, Ian himself answered. We soon met for drinks, and after meeting Ian and Laura, I knew right away that these were people I could trust with something as important as a trek to Everest Base Camp. Everest Base Camp turned out to be unforgettable--the magic of the Sherpa culture, the breathtaking scenery, the friendships formed, and of course, Ian's presence on the trip. While ITT's guides, porters, and support staff are absolute professionals, what stood out most was Ian himself. On one trek with a different company, I fell acutely ill after five days of exhausting effort. My guide made the right call to turn us back, even though I was devastated at the time. That experience underscored the importance of choosing the right guide--and how grateful I am to have found Ian Taylor Trekking for my next expeditions. I've witnessed Ian and his team handle every type of situation with compassion, professionalism, and encouragement. Some clients arrive underprepared. Others, like me on Kilimanjaro, may doubt themselves at critical moments. At less than 100 meters from the summit, I was struggling silently. Ian didn't need me to say it--he noticed. Without turning around, he calmly reminded me of proper breathing technique. That simple guidance carried me to the summit at age 65. There were 8 of us on the hour and a half ride stopping about halfway to take pictures. I appreciate that they picked horses to match the riders and their different riding levels. For someone who does not ride often this ride was long enough to enjoy but not too long sitting in a saddle. Totally worth every penny.

But now, in reflection these questions were unfounded. BMR is a GREAT experience and fantastic way to get close to the majestic outdoors of Colorado. Most of all a week of understanding and playing the role of a cowboy...priceless. The crew of wranglers takes care to make sure you have a great time, the entire kitchen/dining staff provides all the awesome food for the week, housekeeping is on the spot and above all the service levels provided to guests is 100% focused and quality. My friend and I visited again this past week, for the 3rd time over the last several years. And we will certainly return! The scenery is gorgeous and the guest cabins are beautiful, clean, well kept and rustic. The food is delicious--3 excellent meals served each day. My first 14er!! And apparently it's a common gateway hike. Information on the website is clear that…read moreparking can be reserved two weeks in advance, which is what my friend and I did. We stayed overnight at an Airbnb in Breck to make a weekend trip out of the adventure, leaving at 6am to make it to the top of Quandary by early afternoon. There was a volunteer standing at the base of the ascent to warn everyone about clouds coming in. It did get chilly at the end of August and sprinkle quite heavily by the end of our hike. So glad my friend had hiking poles, because I wouldn't have survived without them. The views are beautiful at the top, and we even got to see adorable mountain goats!! Haven't decided whether or not I'll do another 14er, but at least I did one. Definitely consult friends or the internet for advice if this is your first. It's a struggle if you have weak knees like I do, but take your time and start early if you can. Then take a picture with the sign at the top so you can show off on social media afterwards, obviously.

My youngest is 7, and she was delighted to ride by herself on Gator. My oldest enjoyed riding Marley. Oliver was my horse, and he was great. Because it is less busy in late September, we got a private ride without paying extra...lucky us! Verna was very knowledgeable and patient with all of our questions about the horses, landscape, and wildlife in the area. She picked Gator for my 7 year old because he's slow and gentle, which was perfect for her first solo ride. It was such a peaceful time riding and we had such gorgeous weather, we will remember this forever. I highly recommend 4 Eagle Stables!

Take the 850 road which is unpaved to the 1st parking lot with a lake to the south side. Here you…read morecan see the waterfalls in the distance. You will have to cross the river which has no bridge. Either take off your shoes or skillfully traverse the river by rock hopping across. If you have poles you stand a better chance of not falling off the stepping stones. After the falls you can drive all the way up to the dam and park there. Mountain goats do walk about there to lick the dust off cars or lick the roads there for salt which was left over from the salting of the roads during winter. If you are lucky you will be able to see them up close. Apparently they are there frequently. The views are spectacular in this glacial valley.
