I was very nervous about looking for movers due to a bad experience with another moving company with a 4 star Yelp review. I was sure that everyone's experience would be different and something would go wrong. We moved from White Plains to Queens, and while Movers, Not Shaker was not the lowest quote we received, I am so glad that we used them for our move. They showed up on time, they were courteous, and they were efficient! We started at 9AM and ended around 2PM. Which included unassembly of furnitures, wrapping of mattresses and other large items, they also reassembled all the furnitures in their designated rooms. And pointed out the floor was not even, which was the result of a wobbly bed. I highly recommend these guys for your next move! read more

My movers were two hours late, arrived in a rented Ryder truck rather than the name brand (with the promised eco-friendly fueling), and arrived without face masks on. They then tried to charge me more than the price I had agreed on and I had to argue with Greg on the phone. They were off to a rough start. Despite this, Iskander, Firvz, and Zarshed did an excellent job. Once they got started, they were efficient and thorough movers and I trusted them with my stuff. They did use more boxes (by putting my duffle bags into boxes) and plastic than I expected from an eco-friendly moving company. Overall, the move itself went relatively smoothly, despite the initial issues. My biggest complaint is really with regards to the employee who I worked with in arranging the move, Greg. He was gruff, rude, and condescending for absolutely no reason. I was shocked by how rude he was to a customer just making an inquiry initially. He was repeatedly rude with every single phone and email interaction, including on the day of the move when he tried to price gauge me and called me in an accusatory disrespectful fashion. I actually tried to find another company just to avoid working with him, but ended up sticking with Movers Not Shakers because I liked what I thought was their eco-friendly ethos. All in all, I recommend Iskander (the foreman), Firvz, and Zarshed, but struggle to recommend this company due to their lack of follow-through on their eco-friendly promises, and because of Greg's horrible customer service. read more

They were really, really good. Super impressed. Greg was cool and gave great advice as I was figuring out how many crates/boxes I'd need and also quickly updated when I had some revisions later on. Good guy. Lizanne was awesome and took care of a last minute insurance requirement and just super nice on the phone. But, the applauds go to guys who did the moving. I wish I could name all 4 of them. Amazingly efficient and all really nice and polite guys. I thought there was no way we would get the move done in time but they were a well-oiled machine. I've a ton of respect for what they do and how hard they work. A buddy (who is a really demanding guy tbh) had used them and highly recommended them so I was confident they would be good but they really were above and beyond. I felt a little bad giving MnS 3 stars, but they earned it based on one thing: price. I moved from a basement level walk up, not more than ten feet from the truck, I had a bed, some tables, a tv, some boxes. I moved to an elevator building. The unit was two feet from the elevator. It was a move that would have taken my friends and I with a U-Haul about two hours. It took the movers two hours; they were great. Movers: 5 Stars The customer service dealt with my abrasive building manager to acquire proper paperwork for the move. Very friendly. Again, 5 Stars. The move took no more than two hours, with minimal labor. I paid $640 with tip (the movers did well). I was disappointed with the price but chalked it up as a moving expense. My brother (roommate) comes.several hours later with four times the pack-up, including a fifth floor east village walk up. I take that back - it was ten times the stuff. They paid $300 including tip to three very grateful moving professionals. I was irate. When you're moving, make sure the company has insurance, and before you sign any flat-rate fee, make sure it's not $300/hr. That's what lawyers make. Again, great moving and customer service, but the price continues to piss me off to this day. JUST based on how unbelievably rude Greg Gissen was during the first phone call I had with him - we decided not to go with this company. He kept cutting me off; acted extremely irritated that I had some questions about the quote (?); and was generally rude & abrasive. Movers Not Shakers lost a client based off of 1 single phone call with Greg Gissen. Based on other reviews below, the company may seriously want to train Greg in correct customer service ASAP. Really positive experience with Danny and the group from M,NS. Move out was a breeze; 2 hours to move a "large" studio, to include some furniture and item wrapping/boxing. Move-in was a bit more challenging due to pretty long runs for each trip, as well as some elevator limitations, but the guys rolled with it and got it done. At first it seemed like the price was pretty high to move a studio, but ultimately it was on par with the other quotes I received, and you have the benefit/cost-savings of having the packing crates included. And they send 4 guys, which makes for an extremely efficient process. No items lost/damaged, or otherwise. Highly recommend. read more

Wish we could give 0 stars. I caught a mistake and called Movers not Shakers (MNS) to cancel my move. I was transferred to Greg Gissen who proceeded to talk over me, yell, say disparaging things and then finally hang up, but not before he said he cancelled my move. To confirm the cancellation (because really, I don't need 2 separate companies showing up on the day of a big move), I sent an email to which Greg replied in all caps, "YOU ARE LYING" (about being hung up on). I forwarded that email to the owner of Movers not Shakers to ask, "When it is ever ok to yell at people, and how is this ever professional? Also, I know its not me, because yelp reviews here are filled with peopel saying Greg chewed them out on the phone." To his credit, he tried to get in touch with me right away, and we got on the phone. Then it was like a bad nightmare when you think you've finally reached safety but the place/person turns out to be worse. I apologized for my part in having to cancel a move the day before; but really I wanted to know under what circumstance its ok to ever yell at people. Then the Owner started to yell at me, say, "You have to understand this isn't like returning a pair of shoes at Zappos just because you changed your mind." Excuse me? This is irrelevant and stinks of sexism. Bottom line: - aren't clients in their rights to cancel a job? - when they do, isn't the best way to call to cancel a job? - then why is there a need to outright yell and say anything other than, "I'm sorry to hear this, I hope you consider us in the future" or, "I'm sorry to hear this. Let me remind you there is a cancellation fee of $X. I hope we can work together next time." The fact that Greg is on here with bad reviews of yelling at past people; and that the owner continues to employ him and also defend his behavior is disgusting. read more

I can't express how happy I am with MNS. Moving is such a pain and in NYC, it's even worse. Vanessa helped me from the start by replying to my Yelp message and was so responsive. I never had to follow up because she was attentive and punctual. The price here was so much cheaper and more reasonable than the other companies. My old building is small. Small hallways within the unit, somewhat obstructed bedroom door, which makes moving obscure. Small hallways and on the 5th floor on a walkup. Not easy at all. Ricardo, Atiba, and Mackay were absolutely amazing. When they arrived, they were so swift and started tackling everything that I asked myself why I was so stressed about moving. My bed frame is a pain in the ass that I regret purchasing. I've been dreading this move for months knowing how difficult this bed frame is but the team made it so simple. They even had boxes available for some spare items. If you need movers, call Movers, Not Shakers. You won't regret it. I got a great quote and paid what I was told upon making the reservation. DAMN. If I could give them 100 stars I would! Easiest move of my life After a terrible experience with another moving company, our research led us to Movers Not Shakers. We were looking for a flat rate since we have had issues in the past with movers hitting us with tons of additional charges for "extra" time, materials, credit card fees, traffic delays, etc. Movers Not Shakers quoted us a very reasonable flat rate, showed up an hour early (unheard of) and finished in less than 3 hours. The three gentleman helping with our move were very pleasant, fast and efficient. Nothing was broken, dropped or otherwise harmed. We have very very large plants that needed special care and the movers handled them carefully as well. There were no extra charges and no hassle with payment Honestly the best moving experience I have ever had. I referred them to a friend for her recent move and she also had a great experience with them, so I know it wasn't chance. I highly don't recommend using this company as a moving service. They barely give you a consultation and then when they arrive they give you another consultation where they jack up the price 70%. And only send three people to do a job that takes six people where then the job takes double amount of time to complete. There is absolutely no professionalism with this company as well while you're moving prior they're happy nice and great. However be aware that once you're in the moving process they become ruthless and blackmailers. Obviously they're aware that you need to move so they throw any price at you that they like with no real understanding of where the price came is coming from as well as scream at you. I moved last year and just realized I forgot to leave these guys a good review. I realize this now because I just referred my friend to them. After searching around, at that time, for an affordable mover I found these guys had the best rates. In a place like New York City, where the traffic alone can set you back hours, you really need to use a flat-rate moving service. This move easily would have costed me over a $1000 (for a tiny apartment) if I had paid by the hour. Also, knowing what you are going to pay up front alleviates a lot of stress. They were pretty much on time (I was their first appointment-be the first appointment) and moved everything from my fourth floor walk-up to my new apartment without a hitch. The guys who move you are courteous, efficient and very respectful. The day I moved was difficult for me emotionally and they could not have been nicer. Kater was the person I communicated with and she is responsive, calming, committed and a caring person. Im not saying stuff didn't come up it did but moving is complex and stressful and you are paying for a excellent service. I love that they are green, there may be cheaper companies but these guys are paid a living wage and its a hard physical job. It seems to me that the negative reviews are mostly from people who got irritated at the quote stage. Many people call and have no idea on how much stuff they have and I'm sure perhaps this aspect of the service perhaps a great website with more of a visual check list would aid this part of the job. The most important thing is they take good care of you when you move and in that respect -they are excellent! What an awesome experience from start to finish. The reasonable quote and thorough planning from the sales team was great reassurance that the job will be completed in a professional manner. Moving day arrived and the two day move began with the first day loading the truck and the second day driving from Brooklyn to Boston and unloading. This clearly was no small task. The team that loaded everything made the 100+ boxes and 2 bedrooms worth of furniture and some last minute packing look like a breeze. They handled everything with the utmost of care. Prior to the move: The management office was very responsive and informative throughout the process. They provided me with a certificate of insurance in less than 48 hours and there were no hidden fees in my quote. During the move: Danny, Ralph and Curtis showed up EARLY. The moving team was pretty good and I would definitely hire them again. They moved me from BK to NJ on a rainy Saturday morning, and they were nothing but nice and professional the entire time. They asked clarifying questions throughout (which is really important to me) and moved my items quickly and carefully. I can only give them 4 stars though because a glass lamp broke in the move--not exactly sure how it happened because they wrapped it with bubble wrap & tape and put it inside of an empty box. Flawless move last week and have already recommended them to other friends. I was moving from NYC to Maryland and they planned to pick up my items on a Thursday afternoon and deliver the next afternoon. The guys called Thursday morning to see if they could come earlier which I welcomed because it let me get on the road sooner. Four guys came - they were extremely efficient and quick and they were all very friendly. They also asked if they could deliver earlier the next morning which I was also very happy to let them do. Two guys came the next morning, also had everything off the truck in what seemed like minutes! Generally speaking - very communicative, friendly, and fairly priced. I've debated for awhile writing this review as I don't like posting negative reviews about businesses, but that being said, I know I would never use them again and wouldn't recommend them to a friend. I've used them 2x in the past. The first move went smoothly. They were close to punctual and moved me out incredibly quickly. The movers were great and I had no issues. The second move didn't go as well. I liked that they gave me a flat rate and the guy when he arrived (more than 30 minutes late) gave me a hard time that they might need to charge me more as I hadn't listed all my furniture -- please note I not only listed all the items correctly on the online form but had also confirmed the total with the owner prior. Based on reading other reviews and what happened later on, I'm guessing it was to get a bigger tip. The guys did the move pretty quickly however I didn't like that one of the guys left a jacket that wreaked of cigarettes on top of my cream couch which left a nice stench of smoke. What really bothered me about the move though was when I went to tip them. I tipped about 18% which I had been assured was more than generous. However, when I handed it to the foreman (or leader?) he got upset and demanded to know if I couldn't "do better" than that. I felt incredibly harrassed and threated by his pushiness for more money and a bigger tip. It left me feeling very uncomfortable to the point that I would never use these guys again. read more

** In Short ** We weren't sure whether to love or hate these guys. In the end, they did a nice job at a fair price, but not without some headaches. There were some down points to dealing with MNS, but we'd probably use them again. They gave us the best rate, by far, of any of the movers we contacted and stuck to the rate even though we had more stuff than anticipated. They showed up on time and gave us a relatively hassle-free move. If they could work out their 'tude issues -- both in the office and out -- they'd be the best gig in town. ** Kinda Dicks, Kinda Not ** At first we were put off. They quoted us a price and we turned it down. Then, after calling around, we realized the error of our ways and called back to say yes please! The price had gone up, considerably. 3 days of indecision cost us nearly 20% more than the initial price, which seemed shady. But they were still cheaper than the rest. The guys on the phone were at first very personable, and then reverted to speaking to us like we were jerks who were only wasting their time. They vacillated between super professional and courteous, and then irritated and disinterested. Mark, the owner, was no exception. I only felt like I was bothering him when we spoke. ** The Actual Move ** We unknowingly underestimated our load, and we weren't as ready for them as we should have been -- our fault. After some initial back and forth with the driver/manager for the day, he agreed to charge us only the quoted rate, which was great. But. The dialog at that point seemed disingenuous -- like a lot of bellyaching just to convince us to overtip at the end of the day. But we signed on the quote, the guys moved us, and we paid only what we were quoted plus a 20% tip (which the movers made very clear -- a little too clear -- was standard, if not expected. Though I guess not everyone knows good tipping is essential to being a good citizen of the world, so I get their insistence on that). They handled our things very nicely. They wrapped our valuable pieces well, which I was glad about. They also helped me wrap and pack an oddly shaped large format printer I had no idea how to handle, which was above the call of duty. ** The Movers ** The movers themselves seemed to have some kind of turf war going on. They argued with one another. Two of our five guys were friendly and sweet, the other three were grumpy and hateful. Then when it came to tip-time, Grumpy McRuderson was all hand-over-heart mawkish as he asked me to write kind words on the final receipt. (Ask for Chai on your move. He's the sweetest. Maybe not the best at lifting the biggest stuff, but if all of them were as nice as him this review would be a 5 star glow.) read more

I moved from a 1 bed to a 2 bed in Brooklyn for $900 (this was in June 2012). It was more expensive than other quotes but I was guaranteed a flat rate and stress free experience which was my priority, since I was 9 months pregnant. Our agreement was to get a few guys for the whole day, so no rushing. However on the day of the move, 8 men showed up an hour early while we were still trying to pack a few last minute items. I was taken aback because I was expecting 3 men and a slower pace, but apparently they had another job in the afternoon, so it was chaos and rushing without a heads up. We had an extra piece of furniture that we were unable to sell, and the foreman added $100 off the top of his head just to move the one piece of furniture. When I complained to the manager at the company on the phone, he agreed to take away the $100, mainly because I was unhappy about the 8 man setup. This left me relieved that I didn't have to pay another $100 and I accepted that this would be chaotic. We get to the new apartment and the team was doing ok. Until I saw one of the men in the room upstairs rooting through a plastic bin that had electronics. When I told the foreman, the mover denied looking through the box. I felt super violated. That same guy put our bed frame together incorrectly and it's wobbly to this day (I shake my fist at that dude almost every night!) I wouldn't work with them again mainly because they had employed a thief. Unfortunately one bad apple spoiled the bunch for me. read more

Today was my second time moving with this company. The first time was fairly stress-free and the crew was professional, so I figured I couldn't go wrong. Wrong. First of all, I called weeks before my move and was told by Bri that Mark would get back to me. I never heard back. I called again the week before my move and by the end of the day was set up with Bill to confirm my move. Bill's service was awful. Nice guy, but he kept forgetting/confusing all the details of my move including inventory, price, and address. The day before my move he asked if he could come by "tomorrow" for an on-site estimate. I was like- "Tomorrow, like when I'm moving!?" Then, of course my 'flat rate' went up $200 from $1950 for extra boxes. The foreman said it would have been more, but he was eating a few boxes so that I would take care of the crew with a nice tip. So I tipped $200 and he strongly implied it wasn't enough. I gave an extra $60- all the rest of my cash besides a few singles- and he still acted like it wasn't that much. It wasn't a difficult move, besides the rain. An elevator building to a house. Other stresses: I had Dr. Sofa take apart my couch and put it back together for $375, however the people from Dr Sofa and the moving crew fought over who would carry the sofa down. It was unpleasant. Dr Sofa's people eventually carried it down. The foreman said it was Dr Sofa's responsibility because I was paying them $375, but after the tipping situation at the end, I feel like they could have stepped up to carry the couch if they had such high compensation expectations. I really wish it was set in stone and listed by the company what a fair tip is for bad, fair, or good service. That way expectations can be properly met and no one is taken advantage of. I m really not sure if I was cheap or taken advantage of. Do people really tip movers hundreds of dollars? The foreman also asked me to write any comments on my bill such as 'good service'. So I wrote 'good service.' That was weird. Other than the above, the crew was nice and professional and seemed to take care with my items. They made good time and finished promptly. I called to ask for day-of priority moving help to move a very large appliance up a flight a steps. I was given the number of a mover named Kirk. Kirk gave me a quote of $130 but later said he didn't have the right appliance hand truck. I offered to rent the equipment from HD if he could just send his people as I was in a dire position and my move was just one item up a flight of steps. He agreed and then RAISED the price 35% to $175. Since I was in a bad spot--and he knew this--I agreed after telling him that wasn't right to take advantage of ppl like that. This was my mistake for not walking away here with his first signs of shadiness and moral turpitude. He then postponed til the next morning and failed to get me an invoice by the time he said he would. Then the next morning--1.5 hrs before he said the move would happen at my house--he asked for payment via PayPal! Can you believe how much a classic scam this seems? His business has no name "DBA" (doing business as?) save his name, Kirk Thomas, and used gmail accounts! I told him absolutely not, to expect a bad yelp review, and it seemed like a scam. (Also, he said he would only send 2 guys after I told him the weight & dimensions of the thing and asked for and he agreed to 3. Ultimately, the item needed 4 strong ppl to get it upstairs. Just a note that he completely underestimated and misjudged his supposed trade and area of supposed expertise.) THEN, after some back and forth where he insinuated I was a scam (?? not sure how that could possibly happen...??), he said: "Just remember this write a bad review for anyone over on the moving side and I will take you to court. We have the money to play games and your address for the lawyers to contact you. First and last name so, play with my business if you want to. You got [that] Lida" " When I told him to stop the threats and harassment, this is what he said: "Those are not criminal threats you idiot so fuck you. Let me see a bad review and your ass is in court. That's my final text. Also it can't be harrassment when your the one begging for someone to move your fridge. Good Day. And we a lots of cops so fuck you again" Pls pass for your own safety and well-being!! Do NOT give your address nor belongings to this monster! Shame on Movers Not Shakers for recommending such types too. Very scary. If anything happens to me, let the public know where the threat comes from! *7/10/15 (post conversation/comments by owner): Mistaken identity is bad for business definitely however I have cell phone records showing I called this company's number. Perhaps an interval review is a good idea. Names can be changed but phone number and a third party cell phone company? Also, those dates weren't the dates of the exchange; it took me a few days to decide to post this considering the threats and belligerence surrounding posting this. I couldn't imagine this having gone any better, and I actually ended up tipping the guys 10% EACH (there were four of them). Because I was working with about a five day turnaround, MNS couldn't drop off my boxes until 8am the morning of the move, and then they'd be back around 2:30pm to move the stuff I'd packed. Well, as it turns out, they had some slight scheduling changes that day, and I got a call around 9:45am asking if they could come early. "How early?" I asked. Sure enough, four guys showed up 45 minutes later, packed everything I owned into the boxes in about 20 minutes (it would have taken me hours), took apart all my furniture (bed, couch, bookshelves, etc) and got me moved in in less than two hours (and yes, they insisted on reassembling the furniture despite my assurances that I could do it). They were literally gone from my new apartment at 12:30pm. The $425 I was quoted included the moving, the boxes, and because of the changes, the packing. To top it all off, they were really polite and friendly. All in all, it was an incredibly hassle-free experience, which is a rarity in Manhattan. read more

My experience with this company was mixed. The office was very nice and friendly, and after a discussion of my inventory quoted me a price that seemed comparable to other companies we looked at. I was told that dis/reassembly of all of my furniture was included in the price, and I talked about my concern with my Ikea furniture since I wasn't sure it would survive the move. I was told not to worry, they deal with that all the time and it's usually fine. Day of the move, the movers were a little late, which was concerning because we had a specific window of time we could move into our building. They crew was friendly enough, although they informed both me and my husband separately that they didn't know there would be furniture to dis/reassemble, and if he had known, he would have brought a different crew that would have been more efficient, so to keep that in mind when we tipped. I said I had informed the office of the inventory and he claimed the office was not good at communicating. I did not appreciate being pushed into giving a bigger tip because the office failed to inform them of my inventory, when I know we discussed it. I emailed the office to inform them of this miscommunication to prevent it from happening to anyone else, and as of now they have not responded, which shows me they don't care. Overall, everything was moved and there was no damage and everything was reassembled, but I felt VERY uncomfortable with the pressing for a bigger tip. I tipped over the recommended amount for my quote, and I should not be made to feel guilty when the office failed to do their job. read more

I was weary about hiring this company in the first place based on the mixed reviews and I can tell you that I 100% regret using them, regardless of their low cost. I would have preferred to pay more for a company that was reliable and decent. They showed up late, broke and lost some of my furniture, refused to remove a couch from the first apartment (so I had to hire another moving company to do so. See review on L&L). They complained the entire time and the guy in charge of the job was brash to not only his employees, but to my roommate and me as well. Overall, terrible experience. read more

Immediately decided not to go with this company after speaking with Greg. I am scheduling a last-minute move; not ideal, but unfortunately those are the circumstances. I reached out to a few companies to get quotes, and all have happily and kindly obliged. Greg left me a voicemail, then sent me an email telling me to call him but that he would only be in the office until 3:30 (it was already past 4 when he called). I called back and he said we could schedule a time to speak the next day, and I said that was fine, figuring we would end the call there. Instead, he proceeded to ask me more questions about my move and say they only had one time slot available for my date, so if that time slot didn't work, they weren't the company for me. Understandable! I asked if I could get a general ballpark of price at this point in time or if they only give out specific quotes and we could do that tomorrow. He then went on a bit of a rant: "We don't give ballparks, but it would be $750-$800. Beggars can't be choosers, so if you want a cheaper company, we're not for you. If you're gonna call last minute, you have to just jump the gun and take whatever we give you because we're not some man with a van." I do not appreciate being spoken down to - I understand that it's a last minute move and understand the price of a last-minute move. I still would like to compare quotes. Also, why would he give me a ballpark price right after saying they don't give ballparks? It really seemed like Greg didn't want me to use this company's services. I was happy to continue the conversation the next day and book the slot at the given price, but Greg spoke down to me and said they weren't the company for me, without even giving me the chance to say I was okay with the price and time. I'm not one to write Yelp reviews, but after seeing that Greg has numerous poor reviews, I thought I would add to it in hopes that management can have a conversation with him about appropriate customer service. I owe these guys a review --- and I appreciate them so much that I am getting to it now, even months later. They were great. I have moved in NYC many times (this was the 4th in NYC - and my 5th, a long story by we moved in Jan and then again in Feb) and never been particularly satisfied. I have found my moving company and will use them again. Matt was friendly and helpful and we set up the timing. We were moving a 3 bedroom, so he came to the apartment to make sure the quote was accurate. Out of all the movers I talked to, they were not the cheapest, but close. I chose them ultimately because of the option to have re-useable bins rather than disposable boxes (even recycling the boxes or even giving them to someone else to re-use doesn't satisfy my desire to be eco-friendly. Re-useable boxes does. Thank you for that option!!!) Jay and his team moved us BOTH times and were really great. They were so attentive to details, checked in with me regularly to make sure I was okay with what they were doing (ie, we are planning to pack the picture like this okay? (yes) Do you want us to move the shower caddy? (no) etc) and we were a team to figure out getting the dining room table out of the apartment (I had hired a separate furniture specialist to get it in, but with these guys and some brainstorming, we got it out.) And did I mention the first move was out of a 5th floor walk up? Their energy and good spirits, willingness to work with us to get it right -- even at the end of a very long day, was very appreciated. So that is why I called them back a month later to help me move to the next apartment. And again, I was beyond satisfied. These guys are good and I recommend them without reservation. Do not use these guys. Greg, their sales rep is the most obnoxious and rude sales person I've ever come across, with a foul client service attitude to match. 2mins with him on the phone made me decide to take my business elsewhere, and that was before even getting a quote or reading the rest of the reviews on this site about him specifically.
