On Sept 03/2024 my son and I went to Moynihan Lumber in Beverly to inquire about ordering an exterior door, custom sized, to fit a [mobile] home. We tried Home Depot and Lowes, and we were told we needed to go to a place that makes doors. My son and I sat with a sales rep at Moynihan Lumber named Corey. Corey spent about 15-20 minutes searching their database using the measurements I gave him, looking for a door to fit 33" x 75" rough, at one point Corey spoke on the phone with the contractor to make certain of the rough opening size for the door. After an extensive search Corey said he found a door in the size I needed, however I was limited to a very basic door. I placed an order with Corey for 2 doors, I paid $2,400, using my credit card, the doors arrived 2-weeks later and they were not the "custom size" I gave him... I emailed Moynihan's on Saturday 09/28, they are not open on Saturday, informing them that the doors are not the correct size. My son followed up at Moynihan's, in person, on Monday 09/30. The manager was rude telling my son they don't make doors the size we ordered. He told my son we have to eat the doors, nothing can be done. I went to Moynihan Lumber to purchase a CUSTOM size door, if they could not order or make a door in the size I needed, then they should not have placed an order for the doors.. Moynihan's told my son to tell the contractor to make the doors work. Moynihan's is not a reputable company. Their attitude is unacceptable. I am a 67 year old woman, I went to Moynihan Lumber to purchase a specific size door, Corey said he found a door that could be ordered in the rough opening size I needed...Now Moynihan said I can eat the doors. I have filed a complaint with the Attorney General's office for Unfair Business Practice and with the BBB. read more

Ordered windows here by email and phone after connecting with them via Andersen's web site sales lead generator. The rep I dealt with was awesome. Very good, prompt communications, plus help planning purchase timing so the supplies would arrive when my GC needed them, and not too soon before. Delivery was free and they helped by adjusting to a new date even after arrival here on the first delivery date didn't pan out on my end. read more

Yeah . . . I have been here about 20 times for small project supplies, but I'm done now. The customer service is AWFUL. In fact, I wouldn't even say "customer service" . . . instead I'd just say they have a mixed assortment of surly, rude, people. They're routinely rude and disinterested in helping you. The people at the register rarely even respond if you say "thanks" or "have a good one." Most of the older employees act like you're torturing them by even asking a question. It is the least welcoming place to shop in Beverly. There are two older employees who are *sometimes* nice, but all of the other employees are just unbelievable jerks. read more

One thing that people may not realize is the difference between a lumber yard and a hardware store. Moynihan is very much a lumber yard with an attached hardware store. The vast majority of their business is to contractors. Their wood products are very high quality. They have a wide selection of specialty wood products that just aren't available at Home Depot, and if they are, they're better at Moynihan. I'm impressed with the selection of hardware they cram into their small store as well. Just keep in mind, they're not set up to help someone who doesn't have at least some knowledge of building trades. If you go in knowing what you need, they'll be very helpful. If you go looking for someone to walk you through a project you've got sketched out on the back of an envelope and you don't know what materials you want to use or what tools you'll need, this isn't the place to go. Again, bottom line, high quality product and a helpful staff for people who know what they need. read more

I think Moynihan Lumber is fantastic! I went there for bi-fold closet doors, shutters and a vanity. The sales rep could not have been more helpful! Less than a week later, he priced all items and I took delivery! I visited the kitchen department for a vanity with a similar experience, then the paint department where the rep went out of his was to help me find a color. (well, at least for the deck railing we were purchasing) We ended up buying a product that was VERY difficult to install based on wrong advice - then they would not take it back on return. ML renovated our kitchen. In hindsight, wish we would have looked at more reviews and asked for more referrals before we went ahead. The project took way longer than expected, with many issues along the way. Cabinets arrived damaged, errant cabinets, etc. Though they re-ordered, each error slowed down the process. The crew that did the work were pleasant, but not as proficient as we expected. My husband had to act as general contractor, keep an eye on them, and have them change a bunch of things. ML recommended people for flooring, electric and plumbing, and we had some issues with each. We had to re-hire a floorer to fix the issues of the 1st floorer, who know one could even locate after he messed up the job. Despite hearing good things, we were very disappointed with ML. We found a tiler and painter on our own, and they did great jobs! read more

I've been renovating my house - and regrettably, I've given these clowns way too much business because they're closer than HD. I won't be giving them more business, because they do everything they can to prove they don't deserve it. Some highlights: - overcharging me several times - rushing to help women (who aren't asking for their help) in a very skeevy way. Then, making lamely veiled sexual suggestions behind women's backs. On separate occasions, I've witnessed these creeps talking about women's bodies after they've left. Crazily unprofessional. What are you guys, eleven? - I was in today and while I waited to check out, one jerk texted on his phone while another went off on some ignorant rant about "f-ing Mexicans f-ing up a roof." - consistently acting condescending and bothered if I have a simple question. The product selection is decent but the customer service needs improvement. It is so difficult to get help when buying products here. It doesn't matter what department.. the mouldings/lumber in the yard, paint or even decking. I've shopped in all three and would have bought here if I could have gotten some help. I live in Ryal Side, which makes Moynahan's my closest hardware store. However, based upon the deplorable level of customer service, I routinely drive across town to the Aubuchon in North Beverly. If you haven't been to the Aubuchon, it's great! It's well organized, staffed by friendly people, and they even have toys there which makes it far easier to get the kids to go with me. There's another one in Ipswich on Rte 1A that is equally nice. The TruValue in Danvers is also a great spot. But stay away from Moynahan's, nothing but a bunch of sour townies from Beverly's yesteryear. read more

There slogan should be "half of what you really need part of the time". I haven't been there in two years and had forgotten how apathetic and unhelpful the staff is. I am not a huge Home Depot fan but would love to see them drive this place out of business. DO NOT DO A KITCHEN ORDER HERE. We purchased the top of the line, custom cabinetry line from Omega/Dynasty. The kitchen designer made some serious mistakes ordering cabinets and panels and shelving the wrong size, wrong color, wrong pieces and styles all together - not once, but multiple times. After each re-order it takes another month to receive. It cost us a lot of extra money and time. After nearly 5 months the kitchen is not complete yet. The Omega Reps had to be involved and they screwed up so bad, too, resulting in cabinets that were spray painted on site with the wrong paint. Very disappointed given that we've used them before for other kitchens. When Webb, the kitchen designer retired some years ago, he apparently left an incompetent and less than responsive or caring team. We will not recommend them nor use them again for any other project, big or small. read more

Ordered lumber and hardware to complete a pergola in backyard. Did not arrive in the morning as scheduled. Sent all the wrong sizes of hardwood and wood. Wood in awful shape. Would have been better picking from the bottom of the stack at home depot. They can't exchange or drop off correct size wood for 6 days. Real disappointment. Wish i would have read the reviews on this place before i ordered. Not the guy to ever complain or write a review online but i felt the need to open a yelp account after this terrible experience. It was 4:48 pm on Wednesday 9/30/09 and I was pulling in to the store parking lot. I made a special trip to come to Moynihan's because I knew they had the item I needed. Some guy was standing in the doorway smoking and talking to other man. As I pulled in he told me they were closed. I told him it wasn't 5pm (they close at 5pm). He repeated he was closed. He obviously didn't give a rat's fanny. He just stood there talking and smoking - ignoring me. I have purchased a ton of stuff there but I will not be going back. In my business the customer is King. Sadly I agree with all these reviewers. I just attempted to buy two doors from these guys. Oh my God....I was stunned by the blatant lack of customer service. I went upstairs and walked around without any one making an attempt to help me. One man, severely over weight and just sitting at his desk having a personal conversation with someone. He not only didn't attempt stop his conversation, after 15 minutes the other guy was feeling uncomfortable for me and stopped talking to him. Finally he granted me an audience. I had done research on their website but this guy had no clue ....nor did he make any attempt to try to find the vendor that is on their website that says they do business with. He basically just dismissed me. Folks ...I was talking about a 6k door! Guess Moynihan is doing so well they don't need my business or that's the way it seems. So much for shopping with the local guy. I went home contacted the door manufacturer, ordered it and got a 10 % discount. And the other door, different manufacturer, I did the same thing and ordered it online...$1,600 (no sales tax and a discount that covered the shipping) Why they have a retail division beats me.....they don't care about the consumer. Went to the Beverly store yesterday looking for some deck options with my wife. One of the guys answered a few questions but it seemed as though I was "bothering" him and the other customer service guy behind the counter. They were watching a hockey video of some type and the video had their full attention, not the customers, (my wife and I ) looking for pricing comparisons and product details on expensive decking. Like so many others who "attempt" to spend their money here, we left with some deck brochures. Our money will be spent elsewhere. I own a business and our customers are our life blood and we do our best to cater to every request. Moynihan Lumber must not care that they seem to be hemorrhaging customers. read more

My experience is similar to Kathy's. Most of the time it is hard to get someone to help or even care that you are there. One time I ordered a bunch of cedar clapboard, I asked for a specific long length, because that is what I needed, instead they sent a bunch of different lengths that I did not ask for or could use. The problem was that it was a repair job and not new construction, so given the lengths they sent, i would have been discarding 30-40% of the stock. They did not seem to care about what I ordered, just that they sent the right number of linear feet. I am not a fan - the selection is fair and prices are a little high, and despite being a minute away, I do not shop there much. read more

I've read some of the other reviews and I would have to agree that i've experienced similar issues with customer service in the past. It wasn't up to par. I must report that i've noticed positive changes recently. I went into find a hard to find specialty rosette block. They hired some new additional people behind the counter who are more attentive to customer's needs. The new person was able to locate the rossete block that a few other box stores were not able to help me with. He was clearly knowledgeable and I appreciate that they went out of the way for me. Improvement definitely noted. Like one of the other reviews mentioned - it's a better option than home depot. read more

Things seem to be much better as of late. I had a problem with an exterior door and the guys at Moynihan got me a new door from the manufacturer. My previous review was 1 star but Moynihan solved my door problem and saw it through to the end, and must be commended. Definitely much better then the big box stores. The counter staff in Beverly are real helpful and knowledgable. They had no trouble pointing me in the right direction. No need for Home Dep or Lowes. Moynihan has everything I need for building materials and tools. Easy in and out and back to the job site. read more

I worked here for 5 months and the only reason I left was due to my living situation and I had to move out of state. I worked in the Accounts payable and receivable department, I came through a temp agency and had no prior experience with either departments so I was nervous that I wouldn't be able pick it up. But thanks to the amazing training I received and with the help of my managers and coworkers, I was able to pick it up quickly! But my favorite part about the company is the management. If I saw something that I thought could be an easier process or something that should be changed completely, I was never ignored. This can be hard to come by in companies so I never took that for granted. The overwhelming negative reviews surprise me because based off of my experience working there, my coworkers are very knowledgeable with the work they do and are happy to help customers when they need it. This company is run like the mafia. I am not one to complain but I have run into problems more than once. I am a single father and a local carpentry business owner. About three years ago I went to pick up a load of lumber and given Moynihan is conveniently close and I'm a huge supporter of local business I had no problem using them. I was moving older dried out lumber that was stacked to sell over so I could get some choice boards when a yard attendant/ delivery driver ran up to me screaming and yelling obscenities at me. Now given I am familiar with lumberyards I knew exactly what I was doing. But I thought crap imagine if I was just a customer trying to get some not twisted and cracked lumber. I clearly spoke up for me and any other patron that may just want some quality out of there products. After realizing that his rage and anger was not subsiding I decided to take the matter inside to management. I stated my complaint to the front desk where I didn't even get an apology. Come to find out the entitled delivery driver is a relative of the family owned company. So fast forward about three years and hundreds of thousands spent at other local competing lumberyards I decided to give them another try. So just yesterday I purchased about $450 dollars worth of lumber and amongst some confusion I ordered 4-8' expensive fur boards.(approximately 5.01 a foot. After getting home and jumping from my work truck to the car to go look at a job I didn't get the time to unpack the lumber until later that evening. I had a few sheets of plywood over the 2x6 fur and after I removed them I realized I only had three out of the four boards. I called the desk and was told to come down and aske the gate attendant and the lumber yard worker for what I'm not sure other than the fact I was shorted a 40 dollar piece of wood. I drove all the way there to get pretty much ignored and when confronted the lack of concern was apparent in every employee. Funny part is I'm still out a board and the big tough delivery driver was still walking around with his chest out unscathed. Well Moynihan I'd hate to say it but a big shout out goes to timberline enterprises which is literally a mile and a half down the street. Both my husband and i have gone to Moynihan lumber on several occasions. On every visit we have been greeted with very friendly and professional staff. The staff is very knowledgeable and always around and always ready to answer any questions you have. They have a wide selection for everything!! and if they don't have something they can most likely order it for you. The last time we were in there we went with our 2 year old son looking at flooring and items to re-do our stairs. they were very helpful, never pushed or forced anything on us to purchase and gave our son some stickers, so in his book they were pretty cool! i am also pretty indecisive and they never once rushed me or shrugged me off. Went there for my first to get some T&G boards for a ceiling project. I went into the main building talked with someone who told me to drive down into the yard I'll find what I'm looking for back there. After wandering around trying to find all the options they have I see the guy who runs their forklift about to pick up my truck from the back because he didn't like where it was parked. Customer service is absolutely horrible I was there to get a hand full of items which on a average day would be painless not only was I there for a hour and forty five minutes but the kid behind the desk had no idea about the products they sell and made me pay for the wrong stuff I had to go back in 5 times for credits and to pay because every time I went to leave the gate keeper who reeked of alcohol !!!!!! Told me the order didn't match the slip ! So the final time I went in to make heads or tales of what I just paid for as the salesman is sifting throu 6 lumber slips then tells me I owe another dollar and change which I told him I was not paying because I have already wasted hours of my life ill never get back then he threatens me that I'm not leaving without paying the dollar what a absolute joke I am not done with them yet and of course when I called to talk to a owner or manager they are all in a meeting how convenient ! read more

I have been going to Moynihan RELUCTANTLY for over ten years. I have NEVER had a satisfying experience. Why go back? Two reasons--neither of them good ones. One, most contractors tell you to go there. Two, they do tend to have the products. However, I have NEVER had a satisfying experience. No one in that store seems to care ANYTHING about you. You get lousy attitude at the counter, on the phone, in the yard, in kitchens/doors/and windows. I have NEVER come away from an interaction with Moynihan and thought "that was pleasant." But I am almost always satisfied leaving Home Depot. I would RATHER support a local business, but after my last recent experience, I WILL NOT shop at Moynihan again. Deplorable business. I have had very good service here. I ordered a storm door through them, which they installed. When I discovered a problem with the door screen, they came back & replaced it with no charge. And at that point I had not even paid for the door! Now it is months later, and we're having trouble with the door closing mechanism, and when I called a few minutes ago, Dale said 'no problem', and he'll be by today or tomorrow to work on it. read more
