    Empanadas

Cute little place with a great menu! I chose this place because I knew my Dad would love the selection and he wasn't disappointed! There's definitely something for everyone. Guacamole was delicious, and so are the chips! So hard not to fill up on those! I ordered the empanadas as an appetizer as well but they are really stuffed! Ended up taking most home. The burrito was decent. The horchata was a little cinnamon heavy to me. Chicken quesadilla was yummy. Best of all was a tres leches dessert that I just couldn't pass up. Divine! Service was quick and friendly. Will definitely be back when in the area.

    Tour for Mexico

This was a small location with a few tables, but it seemed like most orders were being taken out. The menu was much larger than I expected with lots of choices. The service was patient and friendly as it took us some time to order. The meal was started with their chips and green salsa. This was good. The salsa was flavorful with the slightest of kicks, but nothing too overpowerful. It was a nice start to the meal. For an appetizer, the tour for Mexico ($14.99) was ordered. It had mini tacos, mini nachos, flautas, wings, chorizo dip, plantains, and guacamole. This was a bunch of food, and all was solid. My only issue was with the wings. They did not come with a sauce, but they were extremely crispy. I actually dipped them in the green salsa! The tacos had just protein present but was solid. The nachos had a bunch of toppings, while the plantains were crispy and sweet. The chorizo dip had a good balance of cheese and chorizo. It did taste like canned cheese sauce to me, but still tasty. The flautas I believe just had cheese present. For an entrée, I had the carne asada. ($13.95). It came with two sides and a Mexican salad. I opted for the beans and rice, which went well together. Regarding the carne asada, it was very thin, but plenty of flavor. I thought it would be cooked a little too much based on the look of it, but that was not the case at all. It was appetizing. Will I go back? Yup.

Mr. Cactus in Branchburg is hands down my go to place for a casual meal with friends. Whether it's lunch or dinner, I'm always warmly greeted and served a meal that's both delicious and very reasonably priced. The restaurant is located in a fairly obscure location in a strip mall but once you walk through the door it's like a little slice of Mexico. My favorite server is Moni who always welcomes my party with a smile & a desire to give us a good experience. I have yet to have nothing but and I eat there quite often. The fish tacos are very good. My friend enjoys the burrito bowl. We've tried a number of dishes and have not been disappointed yet. I highly recommend Mr. Cactus for lunch or a casual dinner that won't put a hole in your wallet. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Yummy Mexican/Latin food in the area. Probably one of the best places for food in the area period. If I was in the Branchburg area again I'd definitely stop by again. There's a quirk however. The lady at the front/ordering table speaks no word of English and that is probably why most of the customers are Spanish speaking. There's a guy sometimes that is able to help that is fluent in both English and Spanish. But if it's just the lady, you might be really frustrated. It really helped that I'm half fluent in Spanish and was able to singlehandedly communicate my needs on the day where the bilingual dude wasn't there and she was handling everything herself.

My granddaughter and I went to Mr Cactus and thought the food was good. Several tables were there if you wanted to eat there, which we did. It was very clean. There were brightly colored flags strung across the top of the walls as you would do for a party. The fixtures were colorful too and added to the festive feel. Our server was very polite. He handed us tablets that had the menus and photos of some of the dishes. For an appetizer we shared an order of elites orden(corn on a stick) . It was good but would have been better if it was warmer. My granddaughter had an order of flutes (corn tortillas with chicken) that she liked and I had Mi Pueblo ( chicken enchiladas) that was delicious! Both meals included rice, about of a salad and a lovely little orchid. I had limeade and I loved it! This would be terrific in the summer!! We shared a piece of tres leches cake. Sooo good!! We will return again, maybe order take out. If you enjoy Mexican for you will enjoy, or just try it!!

Located in a strip mall but a diamond in the rough, great service and clean spot that sells low cost good food. First time eating cactus that was grilled, kind of taste like a better okra, had a lime taste, not sure if that natural or the soaked it in lime but it worked for me. Tortillas were impressive, I got one of each only thing missing was a margarita but they don't serve alcohol. Enchiladas was also 9 /10, actually enjoyed the food here & will return if visiting this side of Jersey.

I love this place, the staff, and the owners. Generous Lunch specials, great prices, excellent good, and friendly service. What more can I ask for? 5 Stars!

This is ( I think) a branch of the same place in Hillsborough that used to be Mexican Family. I went for a Saturday lunch in bad weather. The service is friendly. Prices are reasonable. It's BYOB. We had tacos Al pastor, vegetarian tamales and grilled cactus. We had churro's and coffee for dessert.Thankfully the manager was willing to turn down the music. Restaurants seem to love overly loud music. The kind that renders conversation impossible and hurts your ears. I went to one place that wasn't crowded and asked the bar tender to turn down the ridiculously loud music. She wouldn't and I never went back. It closed soon after.Don't think it was because of me. Everything was good here. It's astonishing how much Mexican food there is in NJ and how good a lot of it is. This is an example of that. But you know what I can't find or don't know if , a place with good cabrito!

Only thing worse than the outrageously overpriced cold rice and flavorless beans is the inattentive service.

It took a while to track down the staff who seemed to be busy with take-out orders, so it took a while to order and track them down during the meal. We ordered tacquitos and the chicharron, both were ok. I think both could've used more flavor, as it felt a little underwhelming for my taste. The entrees we had were tortas and tacos and these were both a lot more flavorful. The only issue was with the steak, it was very tough. If I came again, it would be because it's a good-priced meal and I would try other tacos with different meat.

On one visit we ordered nachos as an appetizer, our entrees came out really quickly so we asked for it to be packed to go. The server misunderstood and disposed of the food. Food is inconsistent but spicy chicken is always delish. Also a big fan of their burgers. When done right it's the best burger in the neighborhood. Delivery is often incorrect, but I keep going back for the delicious tacos. Even when they send me the wrong protein and no salsa! Also be aware that if you order the guacamole, it doesn't mean they're gonna send you any chips. I learned that the hard way. The restaurant itself is cute. Doesn't look like anything special from the outside, but they have a huge bar and the seating area is comfortable.

I think we both agreed this is just Tex-Mex. She remembered it being really good, so we went. And…read moresince I used to go to Jose Tejas regularly when my workplace was across from one, I can offer the following comparisons: * Ambiance: Quieter here. More upscale. Instead of going for the festive angle of Mex, they go for the decor. * Service: Slower. I remember Jose Tejas always had someone come by your table to refill drinks, check on your order... not here. Ordering was awkward, although at least they got our orders right. We just got water - I would have loved to specify "lemon, no ice", but both waters arrived with lemon and ice. * Food: OK. Edit. I was going to say "smaller", but then I saw that Tejas' portions started downsizing around the time we left town. So maybe it's actually on par here. I really liked the taste of my barbacoa, but the barbacoa taco eater across from me was less impressed. The rice and beans were very m'eh; I think you get more flavor at Jose, but second edit - my other review said you get more salt, so that might again cancel the advantage. You do get a nice side of guac on your house specialty plate, which is rare to find for free (not even listed on the menu), but I paid more than my date for what might have even been less food. (She got three tortillas, I got two...) Finally, the meal started with smoky but rather flavorless salsa, no heat at all, that came with our thin opening chips - the salsa is hotter at Tejas, the chips are thicker, but much saltier. * Intangibles: This one's in a mall. Restaurant wasn't all that crowded, but parking isn't the easiest with all the other shops. Whereas Jose was standalone, but so crowded that parking wasn't the easiest either. Final edit. If you put the two restaurants side by side, I would pick the Jose I used to know by a nose, but Uncle Julio's wins over the last time I went to Jose. I would have to go back to compare. Caveat eator.

The sweet plantains were nicely caramelized and sweet without being cloying. The chips & guacamole came out fresh, the chips still warm, and the guac had a nice balance of creaminess and brightness. The Cuban quesadilla was hearty and satisfying with good melty cheese, with a nice touch from the fillings. Ambience is casual but lively, perfect for hanging with friends or a relaxed dinner. Staff were friendly and responsive. Portion sizes felt moderate (not huge) so if you're very hungry you might want to add another dish. Pricing leans a bit toward "mid‑upper" for this kind of food. The noise level at times crept up, though it never got excessive for conversation. All in all, a very enjoyable visit. I'd go back and try more of their menu.
