    small folded chicken calzone
    DineoutGal A.

I don't think I'd ever notice a place like City Pizza, until a friend emphatically raved about this place's calzone. First of all, the name doesn't scream anything special and the restaurant's exterior isn't the most inviting either. But this little hole-in-the-wall eatery on Ellice Ave is worth checking out. Trust me, there is no décor to speak of here. The place has a few tables and an empty glass counter and quite honestly, looked a bit sad and quiet here. But you have to look past all these things and focus on the delicious food that will come out of that kitchen. This place is a Halal restaurant and yes, they serve pizza but they also serve calzones, fried chicken, lamb and chicken kebabs amongst other items. The folded chicken calzone here is great! It's filled with chicken tikka, salad, and this creamy sauce. A small calzone ($8.69) is quite large; it can probably serve 2 people for lunch, one person if you want to be in a post lunch coma. I ate half of mine and had the rest for dinner. I'll ask for less sauce next time but this is a really delicious calzone filled with really moist and flavourful chicken (all white meat). The chicken tikka is very addictive and is an Iraqi version, not Indian, though there are similarities. The chicken tikka comes as a pizza topping too so I had to try that on my next visit. The pizzas are between $7-$12 depending on the flavour and comes in three sizes (S/M/L), the small can easily feed two people. I tried the small chicken tikka pizza for $8.59; it's a thin to medium crust, with a good coverage of cheese with a decent amount of chicken. The 2 piece fried chicken and fries order was more of an impulse item. No one needed the fried chicken but we thought, for $2.99, how can you go wrong? Well, first of all, we didn't get any fries in our take out but whatever. The drumstick and thigh pieces were so brown and oh so deeply fried for about 5 mins too long. Luckily the meat wasn't super dry, thank goodness for the dark meat. But there wasn't much flavour to the chicken so suppress your urge to order fried chicken and stick with the other items. The "mixed grill" kebab meal ($16.69) comes with 2 chicken tikka skewers, 2 lamb kebabs, 2 naan bread, sauce (similar to a mayo) and what they refer to as a BBQ salad is really roasted tomatoes and onions. Once again, the portions in the mixed grill are large enough to share. The lamb kebabs are addicting! I don't know what kind of spices they mix in there but it's excellent! All the flavours meld perfectly when you assemble the lamb kebab in the naan with the roasted tomatoes and onions and the mayo like sauce. This is a definite winner, so if you like the Lebanese offerings from Shawarma Time and Baraka Pita, try City Pizza's Iraqi take on the lamb kebab!

13" Calzone, good for 1-3 People. Worth the $13.99

Good Food, If you judge this book by its cover it's your loss. Get a Calzone. Tip the cook. Well Done, City Pizza. Maybe change the name though to something else.

One of the best places for calzone. I've been to this place million times and will go another million times. Each time is the same taste and smell. Love each and every single bite of it. Les Saj restaurant (in Winnipeg) needs to learn from this restaurant in food quality, taste, and price.

Their pizza is HORRIBLE....the crust tastes like Cardboard. Save your money and go to Flying Pizza right in the same area.

Lots to say, but in short, try a different ramen restaurant. I sampled a ton thanks to their meal…read moreset and was VERY underwhelmed. The miso ramen is boring. The broth is thick hot water with almost literally no flavor, and there's definitely no harmony. It's like the broth was made using boxed stock/broth. They say there's a 12 hour in house broth cooked daily but it isn't working well. You know how many ramens and stews taste better as the flavors settle and sink in? That doesn't happen here. The chicken karage is solid but heavy on the breading. You get more crispy skin than chicken which isn't ideal if you're hungry. Or, you know, paying for chicken. The vegetarian gyoza are fine but nothing special. The bottoms look charred but taste soft, almost like the color was painted on - I know it's not, but it still looks that way. Then there's the vegetarian ramen... It's bad. It's bad enough that I can call it the worst vegetarian ramen I've tried. Truly no flavor and it's so unremarkable that I'm struggling to describe it. It's corn, chives, mushrooms, bean sprouts, and noodles floating in hot water. You will absolutely need to add salt and spice. You'll also notice that what you receive in both size and color doesn't match the menu photos. Look at the Monthly Combo in my menu photo. Best example is that the salad I was served was 1/4 the size and also missing tomato and cucumber as shown in the photo. Save your money, skip this spot.

The table service was good too, they brought the food right to our table once it was cooked. The Baba Ganesh was very sweet, maybe a bit too sweet, but I dipped my spinach and cheese pie in it and then it was such a delicious blend of creamy! Cheesy and creamy goes well together. Overall the food was great! And the large quantity of it is worth the amount it cost, plus it's fantastic.

The restaurant itself is not very bright inside, there's a few tables inside but it was full at lunch time. Take out works as the food holds up well to travel. The service is super friendly and warm. I ordered the beef shawarma platter with tabouli salad and hummus and pita for about $10 after tax. It's a massive lunch but I managed to finish the entire plate in 20 minute intervals. The meat was a bit dried out, guess it was roasting a little too long. And I didn't find the meat to be as flavourful as I had hoped. But it was still good. I LOVED the tabouli - I'd say the best one I've ever had. It is packed with flavours and the citrus helps cut out the heaviness of the meat and hummus. I'd go back and just order a plate of the tabouli. The hummus was garlicky and pureed very smoothly. I got two big pieces of pita bread to enjoy all that hummus. The kebab platter came with 6 kebabs, rice, tabouli, hummus and 2 pieces of pita bread. The rice is deliciously flavoured and the kebabs were a tad dry but had great flavour to it. I would've liked some hot sauce to go with it, it was take out so I added some sriracha from home which made it even more delicious! I like their falafels as well as it was a very generous sized ball (a little smaller than a baseball). Very light inside. The spinach pie is a pretty big enclosed pita with spinach and cheese inside for $3. Delicious and not greasy at all. The only con if you're not dining in, is finding parking on Ellice Ave during lunch time. Otherwise, great place for a very satisfying meal.
