I stopped in to see if they would be interested in some old vinyl I had inherited...making money was really not an expectation. The owner took a look at what I had and he was pretty dismissive and rude. Didn't appreciate him throwing the albums around. Definitely thought he was doing me a favor...I was actually doing him the favor by allowing him to give 50 cents for each album he deemed acceptable. If you are looking to pick up some cheaper used cd/vinyl/video the store is worth a visit. If you are looking to see if they are interested in buying albums, I'd say save your time and aggravation and just give them to someone. read more

Was so happy to see Mr. Cheapo thriving during COVID! Staff was properly masked (they make their own Mr. Cheapo branded masks if you were so inclined). Great vintage selection as always; got a few cool 7"s and picked thru old RSD releases, including the Phillip Glass score to Koyaanisqatsi. My visits to Mr.Cheapo's are by far the biggest reason why I am always in debt and broke. Awesome selection of nearly every thing a music junkie could ask for from vinyls to cassettes to CDs. Additionally, there is an unfortunately small but nostalgic collection of old Xbox, play station and older console games. There is also a vast arsenal of movie and tv show DVDs and VHS tapes . Would totally recommend to anybody that lives in a hole and doesn't already know about the place. MY ONLY CRITICISM IS: you can't make much off selling used items but... Pretty much come here once a week. I've been to many record stores but nothing compares. Great atmosphere, great people and fantastic deals on anything from records to music books. I highly recommend going to Cheapo's if ur looking for a fun afternoon activity. I usually find myself browsing for about 30-45 mins even though I'm here every week. I had some old 60's and 70's 45 RPM records. I called Mr. Cheapos and gave them a description. I spoke to Josh. He told me that he would pay me $5.00 for one hundred records without the sleeves. I counted roughly 270 records, boxed them and drove them over. Before Josh even looked at the records, he offered $3.00 for all of them. I reminded him what he told me on the phone. I would not have even bothered taking the records to him for $3.00 and did so because he lied to me over the phone. He responded that he did not care so I took the records home. read more

Super well priced and full of hidden gems you could spend hours roaming the store finding. They have old vinyls and new editions of some classics, as well as a huge movie collection. If I lived in the area Id be there a lot more, highly recommend it to any music fans or hardcore vinyl collectors trying to grow their collection. read more

Well stocked and well organized. Great selection for rock genre, but not so for Hip-Hop and R&B. Although their price is somewhat uncompetitive comparing to Amazon. You can even get some brand new CDs in Walmart or Bestbuy for the same price comparing to their used ones. They definitely know the market price. If you are looking for a steal. Going to this store is like going back to my childhood. They have a great selection of music and movies. Anytime I am looking for a movie from my childhood that may be rare, this is the first place I think to go. My daily drive by or patronage at mr cheapos is one that I liken to direct contact and sad reminiscence of a species entering the latter stages of extinction by the hands of corporate iTunes and pirate media wrath. It's a reminder of times that passed less than a decade ago before The Machine as I call it began to make marketing a tangible album more difficult and begun to bring all the impishly mediocre and downright terrible "artists" to the mainstream that our ears are blessed with today, and left the hard working and talented musicians behind to eat the scraps. Pretty good selection of stuff (any type of music), however, mostly caters to rock fans. The best part about this place is the price...very inexpensive (and at the usual cost of CDs...thank goodness). You also can sell back your CDs and DVDs but do not expect a lot back for them. read more

Great place with a decent selection of jazz CD's and just about any DVD you can think of. The staff is helpful and very knowledgeable. They also have lots of rock memorabilia and a good amount of discounted items. My only nit is that at times it can be somewhat cramped, so it's best to drop in when it's not packed with customers, as it tends to be on weekends. Definitely worth a visit. read more

Well . . . they keep their records alphabetized, and there's a lot to be said about that. A lot to be said about THAT. Alphabetization is crucial! I mean, I'm looking for Spirit's self-titled debut, 'cause I need to listen to "Fresh-Garbage" NOW. They didn't have that. Or Sweet's "Fanny Adams" But they had a very reasonably priced Sisters of Mercy 12" (bought it!), and a Saints record that I might have to go back for. Yes, this review is about vinyl only. And, YES, I was only in the "S" section. Which was very well alphabetized. But, all that said, I remember the days when I scored a copy of Cro-Mags "the Age of Quarrel" for $0.99 and Throbbing Gristle's D.o.A. for under $10 . . . those days are gone. Whoever is pricing their vinyl must be checking Discogs.com, and so should you before you pull the trigger on that Septic Death record that you're not sure is worth what they're asking. Actually, I think it is. Actually, I'm not sure I saw a Septic Death record. EITHER WAY! I think their prices are reasonable. Not Cheapo. They should consider changing the name to Mr. Reasonable. They're not the cheapest place to pick up vinyl on the Island, but they're not the worst. Vinyl Bay 777 is the worst. No offense Vinyl Bay . . . but you're the worst. Mr. Cheapo?No! Look people... everyone that takes the time to go into a used a record store thinks they're cool. How many of these people are actually cool? Probably very, very few. Imagine having uncool people, trying to pretend that they aren't giant tools trying to talk to you all day. Sounds awful, doesn't it? I'm reading some of these reviews and I'm thinking... "it's definitely you, not them." Anyone that has bad things to say about this place or its staff is absolutely insane. It's my FAVORITE place on earth. Sure you can buy stuff in Amazon, but then you don't get that amazing early 90's smell OR the opportunity to prove to said employees that you are, in fact, worth speaking to. Let's face it, they are some how sustaining life by working in a used CD shop. That automatically makes them cooler than me, definitely cooler than you, and probably everyone you've ever met. If you want an experience to go along with your music purchasing (something that has become very rare nowadays), then take the time browse here. Buy something while you're at it, even if it is a dollar more than on Amazon. It'll be worth it. I swear. Make sure to breathe in deeply. It smells amazing in there. Also, never trust a review from someone that says "the MOVIE High Fidelity". I just can't even with that. read more

Step in the door and wham your transported into another era of Retail. One in which Rock Music plays and Old and New Vinyl and Cd's mix with Dvds. It's one of the nicest places to go and check out and buy. Like the "All American" Hamburger place in Massapequa, you don't need a lot of Money. They have Posters, CD Sets it is totally awesome. I don't know how this place stays in business. For starters, the staff is as nasty as can be. There is actually a sign that says customers are permitted two questions and then they must leave. The selection is impressive, but basic research will show you that they sell CDs and DVDs for $8.99 that you can get on Amazon for $0.01. There is also a selection of bootlegs, that are not labeled as bootlegs and are really poor quality. I bought one without realizing it and tried to get a refund and was told no returns, despite there being no sign. They also sell tee-shirts that are used and dirty and try to sell VHS tapes of concerts taped off the television for $40+. Finally, if you try to trade things in, they won't look anything up, and rarely will they offer more than $1 for anything. Places like this are the reason small businesses are losing out to internet shopping. They have no respect for customers and really don't deserve to be in business. read more

I have been going to Mr. Cheapos for years. I used to live in Roslyn and bought a house in Kings Park so I have been to both locations more times than I can count. I always loved the selection and would go quite often and even enjoyed many conversations with Mr. Cheapo about various bands. As my kids grew, I used to take them to the one in Commack. Then Mrs Cheapo started working more and more at the Commack location. She was always so nasty and rude that I stopped going for a while. We went back as my kids wanted to get cd's and photos for my birthday. Mrs Cheapo was in her usual nasty mood. I had picked up a double cd and some pics and placed them on the counter. Mrs Cheapo looked at me as if I had just kicked her dog and said "Are you going to buy these"? I said yes please. She did not move an inch to get the cd's (Jewel cases are empty) from the lower storage bins. I started to look at other cd's since she was not moving when my youngest son went to pay for his cd and photos. Mrs Cheapo: "Are you finally ready"? she asked my son & he replied yes and looked at her quizically as he was only in the store for 10 minutes. My son had 3 16" x 14" photos & a cd and had asked for a bag. "Sorry, we don't have any bags" My youngest son walked out of the store. My oldest son then went to the counter with his purchases 2 cd's and 3 14" x 16" photos. Mrs Cheapo: "Was that your brother"? My son answered yes. Mrs Cheapo: "Well why didn't you both bring them up at the same time"? I was dying for my son to say none of your business but, I had raised him right, unlike Mrs Cheapo. my son said, because this is my purchase and one of these is a gift for my brother. Mrs Cheapo: "Oh HUFFFFF!!!! - Tommy, can you ring this young man up" She was exasperated by one sale and nobody else in the store except for Tommy and Mr Cheapo suspiciously leering at us from behind the LP's. The other worker was very helpful and asked my son if he wanted a bag since the photos were large. 2nd purchase done. I had then walked the 3 feet from where I was standing and said "I'm taking these" and pointed to the cd and photos I had placed roughly 10 minutes before on the counter. I told Tommy that I put the cd there a while ago and I think Mrs Cheapo already pulled the cd's. Tommy: "No, she didn't pull the cd's, she just asked me to do it" Me: "Really, I put them down there over 10 mins ago. Do you also have bags"? Tommy: "Sure we have plenty" Me:"So how come she said she didn't have any when my son asked her for one"? Tommy: "Ummm - I don't know" Me:"You know tommy, every time I come here, I have nothing but trouble with Mrs Cheapo. Whether it is just nasty comments, complaints or just plain being a rude person. Don't bother looking for the cd's - I am done with this place" Waved goodbye to Mrs Cheapo forever. Such a nasty person. Normally store owners WANT customers and attempt to be pleasant. Not this witch. Oh and I have seen people come in with their albums for sale numerous times. They offer NOTHING and will turn around and chrge $4 - $15 for those same records. I actually saw one guy get an offer for $15 for his whole collection and I heard the line "Take it or leave it" I walked over and asked if I could look at them and ended up giving the guy $40 for his stash, which I thought was a great deal for me as they were in good shape. I only go to LOONEY TUNES now. They at least know how to treat a customer right. read more

Bought Tool 10,000 days from their used section a week ago. When I played it there's a lot of excess noise, disc 1 was warped. Now, after some online research I found I had paid $39.99 for a BOOTLEG copy, I took a closer look and there is no barcode to be found. Brought it back to them and told them it was a bootleg and that they charged full price for a bootleg, and asked for a discount towards another purchase and they refused, saying they can only do a full exchange. Do not shop here. They're crooks. Self and customer respecting business people don't charge full price for a bootleg. Learned my lesson. read more

They would not give me a full refund. He treated me like I was trading in old music. I explained they are only one week old from this store. I've been going to Mr. Cheapo for years now and every damn time I walk in the place, I always come out with something. Despite what some people say, he actually lives up to his name. I've gotten amazing stuff in this place for under $10. Stuff that would of been much more had I bought it off eBay. Everything is well organized and their vinyl is always in VG to Mint condition. This is one of the last true record stores left on LI and the fact they've been in business for as long as they had, should be enough of a clue as to how good they are. read more
