Recently, Mr. Dye's Pies launched housemade pasties! I tried the beef pasty, made with well-seasoned ground beef and potatoes, and the mushroom pasty, made with 3 types of mushrooms, celery, and carrots and seasoned with thyme and turmeric. All pasties are baked and heated in the oven when ordered. The beef pasty is finished with an egg wash before baking, which is where it gets it's sheen and crisp crust. They currently offer nacho cheese sauce, sour cream, and a creamy sausage gravy, but the pasties I tasted did not need gravy. Many eat their pasties with ketchup, and I prefer a beef gravy, but again, these did not need gravy. They were seasoned perfectly, and the crust was thin enough that I wasn't struggling to swallow it, like most other pasties that have thick or dense and dry crusts. I was told a third pasty is coming soon, featuring Maxwell Street Polish sausage and caramelized onions, and they plan to offer a gluten free option soon, as well. So now you can get dinner and dessert from Mr. Dye's Pies, and I highly recommend you try these pasties soon! For dessert, my favorites pies are the Wisconsin Old Fashioned Cherry, N'awlins Pecan, and Key Lime pies. They also make a delicious banana bread, too. read more

Pie connoisseurs must give this place a try...if you like thin, crispy pastry crusts, generous fillings, and fresh, warm pies when you walk up to the counter-this is the place for you! I came on a Tuesday evening around 7pm and they were sampling the Purple Monster (yams grown in Hawaii). It was delicious . I grudgingly shared 1 bite each with my son and husband. Yes, it was that good. I went back and asked if they were going to make the blueberry hill and the cherry sometime this week. Saw a story about this place on the news a while ago so I bookmarked it and planned on stoping in some day. Well today was the day, and it won't be the last! It is a little weird, very little signage on the road. Just a small sign that says PIES. Then when you park in the back of the building, there is no real direction as to where to go. But there is only one door, so I took a chance! Inside there was another sign that said "ring bell for Mr. Dye's Pies". A few steps further there was a billboard menu with their products. We ordered 2 half pies, one Key Lime and the other Blueberry to serve with Easter dinner tomorrow. Luckily I "checked in" on YELP! Because I got a free slice of pie! With the free piece I chose the Pecan Pie. Oh my god was that good! Easily the best Pecan Pie I've ever had! Not too sweet, yet so tasty. Full of toasted pecans and the crust was excellent. Maybe the weirdness of the place is it's charm. But the pie is legit. read more

The owner REALLY cares about his product and his customers. SO MANY FAVORITES! The cherry and the key lime are my faves for summer. And when I'm feeling down, the classic and the pecan. And when I'm EXTRA hungry, that peanut butter one hits the spot! lol Have it with a scoop of good vanilla ice cream of course :) And please do not sleep on the banana bread, it's the BEST IN THE CITY. I've enjoyed buying individual pie slices from Mr Dye's Pies when they're out selling at UWM or at the Farmer's Markets. Sweet Potato Pie and Purple Monster are two of my favorites. Pies are well made, tasty, aptly priced. I'll have to check out the brick and mortar shop sometime, but this is a solid hard working local business with tasty wares. read more

2016 was the year that I wanted to try to acquire a sweet tooth and try some of the sweet things that I don't usually order, i failed because I probably hit five sweet places so I will just go with the flow and if I end up at a sweet place cool, if not that's okay. I remember seeing this place in my Yelp feed a while back and didn't think that much of it except that it was cool to get good looking pie slices with out getting a whole pie. I couldn't remember the name and I knew it was like Mr D's or something but I found the correct place pretty easy and I wanted to have a good slice of pie so I went over. I went to the address and I found my self smack in the middle of an industrial park, WTF no pie store here so I called the number and and I was told there in the cash and carry catering building at the rear. I walked in to find what looked like a warehouse setting next to an office so I asked the office people if this was the pie place and they said yes and told me to come in and yelled for the pie maker. I remarked that this place was hard to find and the office guy laughed and said I have no problem finding the place, that's funny. The pie man was super nice and offered to give me samples of the pies and explain that slices are available and he would slice up any pie that he didn't have sliced up already if I wanted, I didn't take any samples because I said just by looking at them I already know that they will not disappoint me. I opted for the Pecan delight and the Key lime for my first samples. OMG the pecan delight was so decadent with tons of fresh pecans which was such so wonderful but not super sweet and just perfect. The key lime is like the road runner getting ready to run off with the legs winding up and shooting down the road, it starts out with a creamy taste and just explodes into the rich key lime flavor like on a delay, OMG once again and not super sweet with a nice thick creamy frosting texture. Wow if all sweets were executed to this level of quality I would have had a sweet tooth all along, man I'm so glad I took the drive to check them out because they rock. They get the fifth star here because they were super nice and did a great job at welcoming the first timer and taking the time and effort to do what ever it took to make sure I left completely satisfied and a new customer from now on. Found this gem in the MKE market and it was SOOO worth it! We got the blueberry pie - delicious and not overly sweet, the Purple Monster - tastes slightly like pumpkin pie and is smooth and well balanced, and the Carver. The Carver was our family's favorite since we're partial to peanut butter and it had great texture. The banana nut bread is also fantastic! We will be back when we're in the area again :) read more

Pretty good pies. Pre ordered to be sure I'd have pies for thanksgiving. Went at 2:30 pm to get them. We were told it'd be 90 min for cherry and that we should've picked a set time to pick up. No one mentioned that to me on the phone 8 days earlier and we're new customers. So they gave us 8 separately packaged slices of cherry which was very unwieldy and I paid full price. Better than no pie, for sure. No time to wait. Pecan pie taste was good. Pecan was as good as my homemade pie, but much too runny and gooey in the middle. It never set up in the center. Not gelatinous, just like melted caramel, runny and messy. Maybe that's by design or maybe because they were very busy and the pie was hot when I got it but had a lid on it. Cherry was overpowered by nutmeg and cinnamon. And bitters? Much too strong in the sweet slices for my taste. I'd prefer straight up tart cherry. Crumb topping didn't hold up well for the next day, but so it goes. Overall, pretty good pies. Pecan was a tasty winner but if I'm not feeling too lazy, I can make my own which tastes just as good and isn't so runny. read more

I like the Key Lime Pie. However, when I went to buy one this morning at 10:45 am, there was no one on site, all dark at their shop in the 3rd st market downtown. Let's get right to it. I've been hearing about this place for the past few weeks and I said today I was going to get 2 slices of pie. Hey I ended up buying 2 pies . I bought the Key Lime Pie and N'awlins Pecan pie. Anyone that knows me know that those are my two favorite pie flavors. Well they did not disappoint. The Key Lime was luscious, rich with a smooth graham cracker crust. So delightful, sweet, tart, and rich. It almost melted in my mouth. I had to still make room for the pecan pie too. A slice at least. That was delectable as well. Rick, crunchy and sweet but not too sweet. The crust was made with a good quality butter and with a crunchy but great texture. The pies were $22 each but it was well worth it. Quality over quantity. I will definitely be back again. Some of the best pies in the city for sure. The variety of pies available means you can find something for everyone. I love that they set up at events throughout the city and are always super friendly and encouraging samples. They know if you try the pie, you'll be hooked! Key lime is probably my favorite, though it's tough to choose. My husband loves pumpkin pie and thinks this is the best he's had. I also really love the cherry old fashioned.
