The entry fee is a reasonable $4 per person, and they shuttle you over to the ripe berry bushes via golf cart, at least on the weekdays when I've been there. (I suspect this may be a way to keep people from just wandering to other areas, but the Emery's folks are just so plain nice that you can't refuse to take their offer of a ride.) The driver also makes sweeps through the picking area from time to time to pick you back up once you've finished harvesting and ready for weigh-in. Blueberries are $3/pound. The farm store has a nice assortment of baked goods and jams, plus my favorite post-picking treat: blueberry ice cream pops dipped in Belgian chocolate.

I have an individual farm share at Katona's neighbor, Honey Brook Organic Farm and I retrieve my produce (and pick my berries and flowers) on Thursdays. So, I've been passing Katona for the last 3 months, telling myself each time I should stop in. Honey Brook planted corn this year, as an add-on crop, so you can purchase some each week for an additional fee (members otherwise pay in advance for the rest of the produce for the whole season), but I've been put off by the price - $1 an ear. This is my only complaint about Honey Brook - and it's minor. I did try two ears of their organic corn last week, and it was, like everything else grown there, amazing. But we are at the height of New Jersey's corn season; and I am in corn country. I knew I could do at least just as well, cornwise, elsewhere. I like organic food, and philosophically, prefer it, but I can't always justify it financially. Maybe that's shortsighted of me - I am a big fan of bees, and the earth's other little critters that suffer under non-organic practices. But now the corn is already grown AND ISN'T GOING TO EAT ITSELF! So I stopped in at Katona. They've got a NJ Preserved Farm designation, so even though they're not organic, at least they're not condos now. Or a freakin' golf course. Or a parking lot. Or strip mall. The market is way in the back, behind some buildings. It isn't hard to find, but I had that "where the heck is this place?" feeling the whole time I was driving around back there. The staff was very nice. Despite the sign, "Corn: $5 a dozen," they told me it was $4 a dozen today, and they'd give me a baker's dozen -- and, as it turns out, a baker's half dozen, if I wanted less corn. So I got 7 ears of corn for $2. I haven't had a proper NJ tomato all season, and saw that Katona had some, so I grabbed 3 medium-sized babies. And a cucumber. With the corn, the whole bag of produce was $3.50. My farm share included 2 melons, a pile of potatoes, and a bunch of very large beets, in addition to flowers, and herbs. So between that, my work bag, and, oh, the two loaves of bread I picked up at the local IPB (BOGO day today), and Katona's produce, I had a hell of a time unloading my car tonight! But I ate really well, Katona providing the bulk of the meal. The corn was every bit as good as the organic stuff down the street, and the bonus was that I had a tomato to go with it. I ripped up a couple of basil leaves and threw them on top. That first bite of tomato was eyes-rolled-back-in-my-head joy. Pure joy. How I've missed you Jersey tomatoes! I roasted my Honey Brook zucchini in rounds, after brushing them with pesto, and topping them with just a little bit of Romano and mozzarella. I may never eat zucchini any other way. While my experience at IPB was not quite stellar, the bread was such a nice addition to the meal. I just finished it off with a glass of cabernet. It is summer, and I am happy.

Walking in the smell of heaven just slapped me in my face and I was transported back in time to what I say was a perfect little bakery .... every where you turned there was a new and exciting piece of deliciousness to drool over. They offered free chocolate cherry butter cookies which were divine!!!!! I didn't purchase any because my focus was on the cake (& on the donuts and dog treats that mysteriously were in my hands when I left lol). There were so many options for cake that in order to wind my decision down I asked the employee what their top cakes were and based on his reply I decided to go with the Strawberry Shortcake ... which was hands down the best I've ever had! It had those delightful "crunchies" the Good Humor strawberry shortcake ice cream bars have which made the cake out of this world! The donuts were massive and so fun! I've both picked my own and bought pre-picked berries, but regardless of how you get them the fruit is fresh and delicious. They're great for eating on their own, but I can tell you they also make a mean blueberry cobbler or really any baked good. At only around 2 dollars for a pound, you can get huge quantities that are unheard of in retail. It's a great bargain, but get it quickly, since blueberry season is only a few short weeks in the summer. I've been told this place usually shuts down after the first weekend in August. Keep in mind this farm is organic and they don't use pesticides. While you can rest assured your produce isn't covered in poison, you might get bit up by bugs when you go picking. I know I did. Learn from my mistakes, take your bug spray! (Side note: two dollars a pound for organic fruit is an amazing deal. I can't get over how much of a bargain it is.) I love this place for having super cheap and super tasty blueberries. If you're free in the summer and like convening with nature, I totally recommend you go blueberry picking here; and even if you don't want to pick your own, there's usually some you can purchase labor free anyway. Blueberries from the grocery store will never be the same after you experience them here.

They have several local farms selling produce represented, Stace of Cakes, Big Matt's Burritos, homemade pastries, a local soapmaker with a "canine rehydration station" and some kind of entertainment going on. I've stopped by early on 2 occasions and liked what I saw. I try to buy my produce "locally" and farmers market like this one are some of the best ways to accomplish this. Yes, most of the produce and the prices are the same at the vegetable purveyors, but the variety is increasing as the growing season progresses. I was a little disappointed that local crafts did not have much of a showing, but may as this farmer's market grows, there'll be more craftspeople with their wares.

Making matters worse it may be called and known as Carslake to locals, etc (and I now guess may be the name of the building)- but - the sign at the street says something else. (Maybe the name of the park or open area?) I strongly suggest that the organizers correct this everyplace possible and even put some sign up identifying entrance to market.

If she has something at the stand that didn't come from her home, it's from someone in the family or local. Her baked goods are great, and her produce does not disappoint. I was sad to see the review down below because I've never had bad produce. Maybe something is bruised but she gives a deal on it not just "here have this less-than-perfect produce for the same price." That would be wild. Anyway, highly recommend her baked goods and the canned stuff. Fav farm stand to stop at.
