My son and I had lunch here last week, and it was a bit of a mixed bag. Walking in, I wasn't entirely sure what I was looking at. I liked the rustic seating area and the numerous cookbooks lining the counter space, but there were a series of what were former convenience store-style refrigerators that simply had their glass blacked out against the back wall (turns out this spot was a deli for a number of years?), and the case where the baked goods were displayed looked barren and slapdash. We were promptly greeted and invited to have a seat. As we looked over the menus, we ordered a coffee and a Thai Iced Tea which appeared after five or so minutes. The coffee was fine, and I loved the huge, chunky cup it was served in, although the sugar bowl was oddly missing a spoon. The Thai Iced Tea was a very unusual rendition of the drink, with VERY ginger and turmeric forward flavors. I ended up ordering Chicken and Waffles, and it was very disappointing. The waffles were generic Eggo-style waffles, and while the spicy maple topping was wonderful, the boneless fried chicken thigh was burnt terribly around the edges and was dry throughout. My son enjoyed his breakfast ramen, but the broth was very salty. Both dishes took a significant amount of time to come out despite the fact that we were the only guests present. Did we just catch them on a bad day? Possibly, but inconsistency does seem to be a common theme in some other reviews, so maybe this is par for the course. I know for the price point, I expected better, and with the competition within walking distance in Farnsworth Street, it will probably be a while before I give HoopHouse another shot.

We came from Chesterfield, NJ and passed by this Cafe and Bakery in Bordentown City. NJ. I ordered Chicken and Waffle and my wife ordered Chicken Congee. The fried chicken is out of this world, Chicken thigh was buttermilk brined, it's juicy and a bit of Korean fried chicken taste. The sourdough scallion waffle is well cooked with mild thingy spicy maple syrup, taste delicious. The Chicken Congee's rice porridge is well cooked. The poached egg is well matched with the salty chicken tasted like Spanish dried ham. My wife loved and finished the whole meal. We also tried their sage scone, apple cider doughnut and the almond baked dessert. They were baked fresh and all of it are delicious. I considered this place a hidden gem in Bordentown City, near Princeton. Lots of millennials are hanging out here. Sadly they closed at 2pm on Sundays. They open from Wednesday to Sunday, 8 am-2pm. Closed at 7 pm, on Friday and Saturday. Only curbside parking and $$ price rated menu.

The historic burg of Bordentown, NJ, has yet another excellent kitchen worthy of your tastebuds and time. HoopHouse is owned and run by Chef Christine in a semi-renovated storefront on Farnsworth Avenue. The large room is divided by refrigerated display case and counter between dining area for about a dozen people and an open bakery/cookery that specializes in breakfast and lunch, using homemade breads and desserts as the star attractions. I walked in around 9:00 a.m. one morning last week and was carried away by the time warp created by the cozy atmosphere of large multi pane windows, large old light fixtures, antique furniture and the wonderful aroma of baking bread. I sat at a small table in the rear of the dining room facing the display case and kitchen. The menu is small but interesting. I opted for the Loaded Hash Brown Bowl (well roasted taters, onion, green pepper, red hot pepper flakes and melted cheese under two runny fried eggs), and strong hot house coffee courtesy of Starbucks/Costco. As I waited, I walked closer to the display case and spied a large bowl of plump bagels, also produced in their oven. I ordered one with butter to take to the office for lunch. Christine was my server, and she was obviously very proud of her shop and loved talking about it. I was happy to listen and learn about her American Woman Success Story. And, the meal she delivered was delicious and filling. The combination of lightly spiced hash browns, dripping fried egg, melted cheese was a total joy to eat slowly, and wash down with the refilled mugga joe. Consuming this idyllic grub in this storybook world created by Christina made for a near magical experience. It was classic, aged and warmly inviting a la 1910. I really didn't want to head to work after this, but all good things must come to an end, so I paid the tab and slowly got into my car trying to take as much of this moment with me. One of the most enjoyable breakfasts of 2022!

    Bread and jarred foods

This new casual spot in Btown escaped my radar somehow. But thanks to old school social media( ie a hyper local newspaper write up) I was alerted to its existence. I tried to order a few items from the dinner portion of the menu last week, but it was way too early for the chef to whip them up while still serving lunch items. Instead I planned on a lunch visit that occurred a few days ago, and was quite pleased with the food. I ordered curd your enthusiasm and the farmhouse sandwich, and an as yet to be named dessert. The chicken sandwich was good, 2 large thighs that were crispy from the oven, not a deep fryer. Served on house made sourdough with a mustard aioli and a few pickles. I do like thighs in some dishes, but I would have preferred a breast in this situation. I liked the bread too, but a roll or biscuit might be a better fit ? The Mac n cheese was very good , orecchiette pasta perfectly al dente in a rich sauce with thick bacon. I'd get that anytime. The dessert case held many options on this rainy weekday. But tops among them were the sandwich cookies, an oatmeal raisin one and also a choc chip. The choc chip won out mainly based on size, this thing was huge. But the scones looked great too. There was also a fancier pastry like choc cake, donuts, cake pops and a few other things. Anyway, that big cookie weighed in at 13.5 ozs, it barely fit inside the clamshell. It turned out to be about 3 servings, dense and tasty choc chip cookie dough with a dark chocolate ganache cream. Definitely a must get. Also available are their house baked breads, I almost bought the cranberry pecan but will use that as an excuse to return. There are also some jarred and bottled offerings from local purveyors that looked interesting. The inside of this ex deli is very cute and casual, and smelled amazing walking into. Onions, mushrooms and thyme hit me like a waft of a country French kitchen. There were 2 employees at the front of house while the chef/owner was behind them in the exposed kitchen cooking like a maniac. They were both helpful and friendly. I'm looking forward to timing my next visit so I can eat in and sample the dinner items. But I'd be just as happy with a brunch visit too, the breakfast items sound yummy. Great new addition to this town that I hope becomes more than a local's secret spot.

Eggs Benedict with pastrami and sauerkraut

I planned on visiting this restaurant because it was a locally owned place and the reviews seem to be very good. Upon entering the restaurant, I gave them my name as I had reservations. Unfortunately, they did not have my name on the list which I found very disconcerting, however, they seated my party shortly. We were still waiting for the fourth member of our party, but ordered drinks. I ordered a coffee which was presented in a huge mug, greatly appreciated. When the fourth member of our party showed up, she ordered a coffee as well. However, it took her a good, 20 minutes to get her coffee. Upon ordering, I ordered the eggs Benedict and they said they were out of ham. They told me I could substitute for the ham, so I decided on pastrami. Other orders were chicken and waffles and pancakes with fruit on top. The eggs Benedict came out with sauerkraut included, which was very surprising. Not a big fan of sauerkraut with eggs and hollandaise sauce, but I must admit that hollandaise sauce was spot on. The pastrami which was on the bottom of the eggs Benedict tasted like brisket, not pastrami. My friend said that the chicken and waffles were delicious and the other party who ordered the pancakes, said they were bulky, and that the whip cream topping was more of a soup topping. The wait time, for the items was longer than I would have liked. And no coffee refills were offered at all. Needless to say, service is not that great. I can't say that I'll be back to this place anytime soon, but I will continue to try to support local places.

Hands down the best food in Bordentown city. The breakfast/brunch is phenomenal, and the seasonal dinner menu never fails to impress. The service is also incredibly attentive and the decore is really cute too. We got the twice cooked potatoes as a starter, which was so good that now I need to figure how to make them myself.

Chicken overcooked Chicken & Waffles Chicken & Waffles

We have been eating at HoopHouse with generally good results but today's lunch was truly awful. We ordered chicken with waffles and a farmhouse chicken sandwich both of which we ordered before. My chicken was burned black and my husband's was over cooked and inedible but he never returns food no matter what. When I returned my food and got a replacement, the waiter said he wouldn't charge me for the burned chicken (!) then he explained after I showed him my husband's plate which looked like dog food, he said, "Sometimes our frier runs hot, which is no excuse. We also waited 15 minutes for our beverages and he apologized saying he "got involved in a conversation", which had been obvious to us. Sadly, we won't be back. It is a real violation of trust of a good customer. Roberta

This business is small but cozy, about 8 tables or so, the server was such a doll very sweet and helpful, even offered to warm up my coffee. I came in about lunch time and ordered the chicken and waffles which was recommended the waffles was super fluffy with bits of scallion in the batter had a great flavor. The chicken was crispy with good seasoning, wish they had given an extra piece. I also ordered some macaroons they had described as key lime with guava, I tasted the lime-ish flavor couldn't tell there was guava but the cookie it self was fresh and perfectly baked.

I HAVE DIED AND GONE TO HEAVEN IN BORDENTOWN. Chef Christine's HoopHouse is as delicious as it is eclectic. Where else can you have a seat in a cute cozy cafe to sip on a French roast coffee, nibble on a scone, devour the best Chicken and Waffle you've ever had, and taste the unique flavors of a Japanese Breakfast (check the description in my Menu pic). And that's just what we ordered for breakfast this time! We've also ordered catering for the holidays from Christine a bunch of times through the years and never disappoints. Our food today was made fresh to order from scratch and served fast, with smiles all around. Nestled in the heart of Bordentown City, you can enjoy some amazing eats, a unique collection of locally sourced packaged goods and Chef's homemade breads and bakery items to go, acting as both a cafe and shop for to-go items. Christine and the team puts their heart in this place and it shows.

Such a treat! I love supporting small businesses that support local farmers. I got the Wild Pancakes, It was delicious. The side of egg was good too! The staff was simply amazing and kind. I definitely will be coming back for their other foods.

Awesome! I recently hotel'd around the corner and free breakfast was so unappealing I had to find something else. Hoop house food was varied and our orders (chicken and waffles and smore French toast) were really delicious. The atmosphere was comfortable and sociable. Service was perfect, kind and responsive.

HoopHouse is great for a casual but quality bite. You can order pastries to-go at the counter or sit down for table service. It's right in the middle of downtown Bordentown if you wanted a bite while you walk around. It was surprisingly all but empty at 5:30pm on a Saturday night so I had no trouble grabbing a quick table for one. I ordered The Jeffrey, a yummy vegetarian sandwich with grilled veggies, hummus, and avocado. I loved it all, including the fries, but the homemade BBQ sauce on the sandwich really sealed the deal. One of the women at the front of house offered to whip me up a honey mustard when I asked if they had any and there wasn't any prepared already. Incredible service. Would gladly return!

Short version: Mouth-watering fresh stimulating dishes, inviting & relaxed modern country atmosphere. Elite customer service and fair prices (quality harvested ingredients) create a space and place to have a savory meal served up by people who appear to genuinely enjoy the craft of creating meals that fuel the body and stir up the spirit. MUST TRY THIS PLACE! If you have time to read: I'm a foodie! This place blew my mind! This place is not only a haven of fresh, clean, made to order dishes but it has an incredible atmosphere! The food was more than delicious it was healing. I felt the love in every bite. As a full-time government employee, mom, and investor I don't have the time to make the best meals and I eat poorly due to the "grind-all day culture of life. When I came here I felt more than welcomed, I felt valued. The customer service was superb. I requested a specific style of coffee with whipped cream. They did not have the cream on hand but they responded by making the whipped cream from scratch! I couldn't believe that 1 customer mattered that much to step aside and create a food item from scratch to satisfy the craving! I was so humbled and touched by the grace and love they poured into their craft. We ordered the loaded home fries, biscuits and gravy, and 4 of their pastry items. Just wow! This place is so unassuming and just shocks you with quality and precise flavor! There's something wholesome about watching your meal be prepared from raw ingredients (observed dough preparation) ! Thank you guys for making my morning bright! Definitely will be visiting again!

Decided on under the moon cafe and loved the atmosphere and ambiance when we first walked in. Different mix matched tables, glasses and plates. Loved the ceiling tiles and comfy looking benches. I love duck and when I read duck Mac and cheese with cherries I was lost in wonder of the combination of flavors so of course I had to order it. Surprisingly it was very enjoyable. The Mac and cheese was nicely made cheesy, noodles weren't over cooked and over all had good flavor with pieces of duck and a few cherries mixed in. I also ordered the burger which was cooked as requested medium rare and was topped with bacon and an onion ring. I upgrade to the Parmesan truffle fries.which I was slightly disappointed in. I didn't see or taste the Parmesan but there was a slight truffle flavor. The fish tacos I heard were good but not really blacked and the vodka sauce was just okay according to others at the table.

I will say, even the bathroom was decorated to instill a sense of nostalgia. We went for brunch and started with a duck mac and cheese. As you'd expect it was a bit lighter on the duck than one would like, but was ultimately well worth trying. I'd say this goes even moreso if you're a fan of duck, as that's not the mac and cheese pairing you see most often. Beyond that, I got the fish tacos. I'm typically afraid of ordering tacos out due to portion size, and while you do only get two tacos, they are rather large, and come with a side of truffle fries which were exceptional. The tacos themselves were also fantastic and filled with the flavor you'd want and expect from the dish. While we were too full to engage with a dessert, I will say our server was nothing short of delightful and we had a wonderful time. The restaurant is in a great location in downtown Bordentown and we will certainly be revisiting when we are back in the area.

I passed it on the way to my hotel and immediately decided it was a place I wanted to check out. I'll admit I was a little alarmed when I walked in and realized it was giving neighborhood bar energy instead of the chic bistro vibes is expecting. I happened to arrive during trivia night, and most of the patrons seemed really into it so it was much louder and rowdier than I anticipated. So much for a quiet dinner. I asked the hostess if I could be seated in a booth away from the activity, but even in a less crowded section, the atmosphere remained pretty overstimulating. In addition to the enthusiastic trivia-playing patrons, there were loud, animated conversations among various staff members, music playing from staff member's phone while music was already playing throughout the restaurant, and just a lot of competing noise. After a three-hour drive, I was really hoping for a glass of wine, a nice meal, and a more relaxed environment. That said, the staff were all incredibly friendly and pleasant. You could tell that they genuinely enjoy working there and enjoy each other's company, which made it difficult to be too annoyed. Eventually, I popped in my AirPods and dissociated so that I could focus on enjoying my meal. For dinner, the Chicken Francaise with a glass of the Italian Pinot Grigio (The name escapes me at the moment). The wine paired beautifully with the meal. The chicken itself was a fairly thick cut and cooked perfectly, but it could have used a bit more seasoning. I also would have loved to see some of the risotto sauce drizzled over the chicken because, while the texture was spot on, the flavor was a little underwhelming on its own. The green beans were excellent. Perfectly cooked with just the right amount of crunch and lightly seasoned. But the real star of the show was the Parmesan lemon risotto. That risotto is easily among the top three best risottos I've ever had. The brightness of the lemon combined with the creamy parmesan made for an absolutely unforgettable dish. I was genuinely disappointed that I couldn't finish it because every bite was fantastic. Honestly, I could have ordered a plate of that risotto by itself and left completely satisfied. While the atmosphere wasn't quite what I was looking for, the friendly service and that unforgettable delectable risotto made the visit worthwhile.

As a hint, I pointed to the Mother's Day reservations as this is definitely the place to take a special someone for a special occasion. All of the specials - drink and otherwise - are beautifully drawn on a big chalkboard at the entrance, so if you like to explore cocktails and mocktails, they're inventive here. Counter to some of the reviews here, we experienced attentive service with our tie dye hobbyist server Zach. He's so friendly and gets that New Orleans version of hospitality that gets to know the customer and tell a little bit about himself - hence the tie dye convo! I'm a beer girl and ordered the Spellbound Coffee porter from an extensive beer list (draft and bottles) and my husband and his friend appreciated the whiskey choices. Menu offers a little something for everyone without being overwhelming. Sandwiches, pizza, pasta, steaks, sushi and Mex - but it does really all make sense (and our friend tells us the Philly sushi roll is great)! Kids have decent choices too and I have to say that the fries that accompany the grilled cheese are probably in my top 5 of all time - crispy with visible salt flakes and peppers. I would also count my apple walnut salad as crave-worthy and one of my top salads of all time - a perfect bite of lettuce, blue cheese, dried fruit and walnut every time - I am not sure that I can try anything else on the menu when I go back (and I had a hard time choosing, as there were many vegetarian options!). Mac and cheese short rib sando makes a statement upon delivery and was delicious according to our friend. Not pictured, but chicken parm was also perfectly crispy and delicious. Caesar salad was a winner and my selective husband told me it was very good, along with his high marks for atmosphere, drinks and service. Definitely a five star experience!

We arrived at Old Town Pub on a weekday at that strange and tender hour between the end of work and…read morethe beginning of evening, when the sunlight looks tired but not yet ready to quit. There were eight of us, a band of aging birthday revelers, unsure whether we were still young enough to be loud or too old to be noticed. The staff didn't seem to mind either way. They smiled, rearranged some tables upstairs in a corner just for us, and let us take our time as the rest of the party wandered in, one by one, like characters from eight different novels who'd lost their place in the story. The upstairs room was empty when we arrived, echoing pleasantly with the sound of our indecision. By the time we left, it was humming with life. The bartender, whose name I did not catch but whose pour I will remember, mixed me an Apple Jack from the fall cocktail list. I had planned to explore their beer selection, which is said to be quite good, but the apple and Tito's combination called out to me like an old American folk song. It was crisp and strong and made me grateful for my liver's enduring patience. For dinner, I ordered the fish and chips. The fish was good but too greasy, even for a dish whose main promise is grease. The plate looked like an oil field after a minor accident, and the poor chips had to make do with swimming lessons they hadn't asked for. Still, the fish itself was solid and flaky, and I ate most of it while pretending not to notice the puddles. Around the table there were burgers, salads, sandwiches and tacos. Everyone ate. Everyone was fine. No one wept with joy. Our server, though, deserves an entire paragraph. He was the sort of person you wish the world had more of. He was patient, kind, and surprisingly cheerful for someone who had to answer seven variations of "What's good here?" He took special care with our friend who has celiac disease, making several trips to confirm that her meal would be safe. He handled it with both professionalism and genuine concern. It was one of those rare moments when good service feels less like customer care and more like small-scale heroism. Everything was very good; although the quesadillas had bacon in there which I didn't like but my fault for not paying attention to the menu description. Our server was very nice & efficient.
