First of all, the service here is something else. It is remarkable. We were seated by the bar, which actually meant by the kitchen and I really recommend it. It was so fun to watch the chefs and they were in such good moods, interacting with us all night. Our waiter, can't remember his name but he was Lebanese, also super friendly and helpful. The ambiance too, was incredible. The food was good but somehow did not live up to the place itself, nor the price. However, it was among the best foods we had in Australia. I thought Asian food was going to be bomb down there because it's closer to Asian countries, and perhaps authentic food items are easier to reach. But that wasn't how it went. Wow the interior here is amazing! Beautiful street good feeling oh and Yum! The steamed dumplings platter was absolutely delicious and so was the Peking duck with pancakes. I would 100% recommend ordering both of them. We also ordered the fried scampi with chilli which was tasty but not as good as the other two. My husband and I a here in Sydney from Laguna California for a few days prior to our cruise . My husband been to Mr Wongs many times and wanted to show me the resturaunt. As we walked in we were greeted by a hostess who was so rude . My husband is a little hard of hearing so he walked passed her to just look around. She then asked me in the rudest way possible what it is that we needed. She was very hostile . I was shocked only because Sydney has been such a lovely experience due to how kind, friendly and respectful everyone is. It was honestly the worst I have ever been treated in a restaurant in my entire life and as the wife of an airline Captain, we travel to some beautiful cities throughout the world. I have been a Flight Attendant, and am now a registered Nurse. I understand how difficult people can be at times but we were innocently looking at the established and deciding if we wanted to stay. I told the hostess she was being rude and she told me I was very Brave slang, for being dumb. I have never been told in my entire life I was dumb by a hostess. She looked at her friend (a waitress) and they looked at each other and laughed when she said it again. She actually looked me up and down then laughed. I don't think I have experienced that type of behavior since I was a teenager in high school. She had blond hair pulled back into a right bun, a narrow chin, and large nose. Someone like that should not be in the hospitality business. I was very insulted. Many ways she could have handled this situation and addressing a possible guest as brave is not one of them. read more

My second time to Mr. Wong and is t gets even better... as I am from California I can't visit here regularly however it is a must every time you Come To Sydney. We ordered the short ribs, the honey chicken the butter and garlic Shrimp and the fried rice. I suggest not to get the shrimp as they are good but bland but everything else was amazing. The best dim sum I've ever had, and dim sum is one of my favorite foods so I have tried many. What I really liked about Mr Wong was that it was creative but still traditional, small twists that made it better and more interesting without being creative for creative's sake. One of my favorites was crab dumplings in soup, fantastic, especially the soup with crabmeat in it. Also loved the pork long bad, juicy and flavorful. Pork turnovers were fantastic (I forgot the official name), with a lot of meat and not greasy. Duck spring rolls may have been the best spring rolls I ever had. I wasn't as crazy about the lobster dumplings, not bad but not particularly lobstery. Dying to go again to try other items on the menu. read more

Superb, superb, superb. Across 20 years that I have been going to Mr. Wong's, I have never had a bad meal or bad service. I took my flight crew there on the last trip and they seated 10 of us at 530p. Hostess, waiters, cooks, everyone very friendly and customer orientated. Cocktails were cold and excellent pours (reasonably priced too). Many different food items ordered to share amongst 10 people. EVERYTHING was superb ! If you have an expense account this is your place; enjoy your Power Lunch. Was in Sydney for holiday and decided to have lunch here as it was on many best of Sydney lists. What we got was the most overpriced subpar lunch. It began with a waiter who went on about their Dom special. When we didn't order Dom he asked if we wanted tea. Turns out that tea was $4 a person and there was a bunch of tea options he didn't explain nor show us. Instead we got yellow water, it was so weak. We didn't complain as we assumed it was complementary. Our bad. We did order a cocktail and it was the best part of the meal. We spent $60 for 12 dumplings. At $5 on avg you expect amazing. What we got were soup dumplings with no soup and shrimp and scallop dumplings, that while fresh, were bland, with wrappers that we mushy. It's very rare that I find Chinese food in need of more seasoning but it did. Next was the duck and fried rice. Everyone ordered the duck so we did too. But why? Not impressed. If you live in an area with a good Chinese deli you could get better duck. The fried rice was the same as the dumplings, fresh but bland. ~$150 of regret later we left full but unsatisfied. The location is intimate and has low lighting. Though a tad crowded, it is lovely. Despite being decent, the food is overpriced for what it is. I place an order for the Peking duck, the crab fried rice, and the prawn wontons in supreme broth. Although the quantity size is limited, the prawn wontons were wonderful and came with a flavorful soup. The Peking duck's skin wasn't crispy enough, and the wraps were easily torn. An elastic wrap should make the skin crispier. Overly salty fried rice was served. It is dusted with fried garlic and seasoning that you must add yourself to the rice. The delicate crab, which ought to be the star of the dish, was overshadowed by the spice, and there is barely any crab flavour left. read more

So I am not convinced this place is worth the ridiculous wait, but I decided to still give this place 5 stars because the food is definitely solid, presentation is beautiful, and I really did enjoy my meal. Steamed dim sum: I love the assortment and perfect for a party of 2 because we each got to try one of each. This selection is seafood heavy and fancy! Fried dim sum: loved the fried assortment as well and the selection was pork heavy. We also enjoyed this selection just as much! While I am not generally a large fan of this type of food I was pleasantley suprised by this food. I went to Mr Wong's on 2nd of April 2023 (6pm - 8pm) during dinner time. Even though the resteraunt was very busy, service was fast and the waiters were nice and always happy to answer any questions about the food. I had the Garlic Butter Prawns and Kung Pao Chicken which was both amazing. The seafood was perfectly seasoned and the chicken was succulent and juicy. The highly anticipated Mr Wong ended up meeting my expectations - the venue is fun, the vibe is energetic, and the food and service was quite good. We made reservations during the holiday week of NYE, so naturally, the restaurant was busy. After being seated, we were quickly greeted by the server and eventually, the manager, who was very friendly and welcoming. To begin, we ordered the steamed dim sum platter - the mix of prawn, crab, mushroom, and beef was perfect. The texture was great and flavors were bold. Then we ordered the king crab fried rice which was a great standalone but even better complement to our other entrees (garlic and chili go a long way in this dish). For our two additional entrees, we had the highly recommended kung pao chicken, and the roasted angus beef short rib. For two people (my wife and I), the serving sizes and quantity were more than enough (we had leftovers). To end, we had a delicious dessert - mango pudding with coconut tapioca, lychee granita and mango pearls. This was the show stopped for the night. I still speak to my wife about this dessert because it hit all the right taste points - ice cream, mango, and the creamy mix of it all. In A Nutshell: -Mr. Wong is quite a find! -It's hidden in an obscure alley, where you'll walk by Sidneysiders possibly smoking cigs or in a group of 2-3 chit-chatting. -After a few minutes of using Google Maps, you see a faded "Mr. Wong " sign. -Around the corner on the left, then see into the many windows into the LARGE restaurant. -Once inside you immediately feel transported to what I imagine to be 1800's Shanghai, China. -The ambience, staff dress, vibe, decor...everything feels classic China. -The service was 100% excellent, I think I interacted w/ atleast 6 different staff including the evening shift manager. -The drinks & food were all superb (look at the photos below). -This place feels like you would get "Shanghai'd", for you history buffs, you know exactly what I'm talking about ;) Overall, please take the time to excuse yourself & wander around towards the main bar & use the classically designed restrooms, while admiring the artwork/photos, duck room & open kitchen. read more

Once inside you will feel transported back to what seems like an elegant Chinese restaurant from a century or more ago. I'm very disspointed with this place. I'm here on vacation and I have read great reviews about this place. The service was HORRIBLE. the hostess was extremely passive aggressive. They put me at the bar next to the hanging uncooked duck. I asked for a table. She rolled her eyes and said she could get a table for me but I would have to leave in an hour and 15 minutes. Possibly one of the best Chinese meals I've ever had and, full disclosure, I'm not a major fan of Chinese cuisine in the first place. Anyway, we made the journey to Mr Wong's expecting to wait at least an hour for a table as that was the expectation set and they don't take reservations. 'Come an hour before you want to eat' they said. So we did. And they seated us in 10 minutes. Go figure. However, the food was superb. There were three of us and we shared everything - the crab fried rice was sublime, the deep fried eggplant was very good and the crispy pork excellent. Undoubtedly the best meal I've had. It was amazing. We went at on a Friday night around 8pm. We had to wait for a table for an hour. They took my number and text when a table is ready, we had heard great reviews about Mr Wong's so we're happy to wait. Once we were seated we ordered our meals and enjoyed a wine. There was a bit of a wait for the food to come out but considering how busy the place was it wasn't an unreasonable time. The staff were very friendly and helpful and had a rustic and trendy atmosphere. The size of the dishes was pleasantly surprising and we had enough to keep us well and truly satisfied. We started with the duck pancakes to share, these were delicious considering I've only had duck a few time. The duck had crispy skin and was so moist and paired with cucumber and soft tortilla like wrap and a sauce was a great start to the meal. A short time later we got our mains and with each dish we were amazed and delighted. We had Crispy Pork Spare Ribs, Salt and pepper Lamb Cutlets, Crispy Eggplant and King Crab Fried Rice. They were all outstanding with different spices and flavors. My favorite being the Crispy Eggplant as it ticked a number or boxes, it was crispy but soft in the middle had some chili, sesame seeds, shallots and fish sauce. It was a real surprise and could've just eaten it as the meal. The spare ribs and cutlets were also very nice and by the time we had gotten to the crab rice we were full but didn't want to waste this amazing food. I WILL BE RETURNING HERE. NO DOUBT.
