When we picked Chinese for dinner tonight, we weren't expecting it to have such a western ambiance to it. When we walked in Bridge Lane, I didn't think this restaurant would have a line outside. To be honest, I was expecting a hole in a wall, casual vibe. It turned out to be a huge place with a bar, an open kitchen, and plenty of space where ducks hang dry ready for Peking Duck. We sat by the bar as we didn't have a reservation. The menu items were not extraordinary, I mean, items were common like Kung Pao Chicken, dimsum items but they were cooked well and presented very well. Quite impressive. We ordered 3 items between two of us and we were so full.
We came before dinner opening to line up for a chance to try this place. It was walking distance from our hotel so we wanted to check it out. The place is pretty dark but the Chinese food was good. The peking duck was great and tasty. The fried rice was a bit salty for me and the wonton soup was okay. I would recommend to try if you're in Sydney!
Lunar New Year means Chinese food at a restaurant recommended by so many friends - Mr Wong. Arrived at 12 for lunch and was able to walk in with no reservation. This restaurant was very large -2 floors - we were seated in the basement which was a very cool ambiance- loved the decor. Ordered hot and sour soup, roasted duck pancakes, fried salt and pepper tofu, egg noodles with mushrooms and scallions. All delicious and very tasty. Service - prompt. I highly recommend.
Mr Wong is a popular Cantonese style cuisine restaurant located in Sydney CBD. It is hidden in a back alley. I recommend making a reservation as the place is often packed. The restaurant itself is large and occupies two floors, is nicely decorated, and has high energy vibe. We ordered the Peking Duck Pancakes, King Crab Fried Rice, and King Prawns, Scallops, and Calamari wok fried with XO sauce and glass noodles. The Peking Duck Pancakes comes with 8 pancakes and some scallions and hoisin sauce to be wrapped. I would say this is a 3 out of 5. The duck is more a traditional roast duck than a Peking duck. In a traditional Peking duck, the crispy duck skin is served separate from the duck meat. In this case, they just cut up pieces of roast duck to you to be wrapped. The duck skin wasn't particularly crispy. The King crab fried rice is served typhoon style which includes a healthy topping of crispy garlic and chili. It is only mildly spicy and the crispy garlic offers a unique texture to the crab fried rice. Decent portion of the crab in the fried rice. I would rate this a 4 out of 5. The King prawns, scallops, and calamari wok fried with XO sauce is our favorite. I would score if a 5 out of 5. The dish is served in a clay pot so it is piping out. Generous amount of seafood and the glass noodles soaks up all the sauce so is quite tasty. The drinks are also unique here and worth checking out.
This restaurant was mentioned several times in conversations about where to eat in Sydney so we had to try it. You must make a reservation. You will not get a table without one. Our reservation was at 5:30pm which is when it opened. There was a mob of people outside waiting for it to open. It was well managed when the crowd started filing in. Our waiter (Ben) was great. He walked us through the menu and size of options to help us create a perfect meal. We started with dim sum. We got the steamed option and customized it to be 6 pieces instead of 8. Lots of seafood. It was so good. While the duck pancakes were a signature item, we skipped them so we could try some other options. The pancakes are really more like make your own spring rolls or like an Asian soft shell taco. Looked fun but ok that we skipped. Next was steamed prawns. This was a fav choice. The prawns were cooked perfectly and the ginger and cilantro worked well with the taste and texture of the prawns. Finally, we had pork and shrimp fried rice. Again, very good. The restaurant is in a building that looks like a refurbished warehouse. The exposed brick and unfinished ceiling give it a cozy, authentic vibe. It's super busy and, therefore, quite loud. While we were there with only two people, I can see this being a great place with a bigger group to be able to share and try more dishes. Great experience. So glad we were able to eat here.
This is one of the most iconic restaurants in Sydney. Based on my research online and when asking a couple friends, everyone was raving about Mr. Wong, so we made reservations about 1.5 months in advance to secure a spot! Each reservation guarantees two hours and we made ours for 2:00P. Their lunch hour ends at 3:00P and the restaurant closes for a couple hours before dinner. When we arrived, it was completely packed, but started clearing out after 40 minutes, so for the second half of the reservation, we didn't have any other customers around us and could enjoy our meal in a quieter environment. The prices here are on the steeper end for Chinese and dim sum dishes, but the options are very diverse and unique. I'd consider their dim sum items elevated and with many that I've never seen anywhere else. + JADE DUMPLING, PRAWN & CHIVES w/ KING CRAB (A$24): The large snappy prawn in each dumpling was the focus, especially being encased within an ultra-thin wrapper. I didn't notice more than just a pinch of crab, so that was a little disappointing. If not for the menu, I probably wouldn't have even known there was crab in there. + PAN FRIED SICHUAN STYLE LAMB DUMPLING (A$24): Exactly how it sounds, the filling of this crispy fried dumpling consisted of shredded lamb with some spice. It was pretty gamey, but also bold, and any fans of lamb will enjoy it. + CRISPY BEAN CURD ROLL w/ WILD MUSHROOMS (A$21): These were so good, we ordered a second plate! Similar to an egg roll, crispy bean curd sheets were filled with a mix of wild mushrooms and shredded carrots. The rolls were served on top of a hoisin-like sauce that was both savory and sweet. This is a must! + ROAST DUCK & CHIVE DUMPLING (A$22): The chives were pretty potent but I could still taste the five spice of the tender duck. The meat was lean and surprisingly didn't contain any fat or gristle. I enjoyed how unique these were and could have eaten another order of them. + BBQ PORK RICE ROLL (A$24): The rice roll was silky and had a good portion of chopped BBQ pork. We also ordered two items from the regular menu. + TWICE COOKED GREEN BEANS (A$34): A solid vegetable dish! The beans were cooked nicely and still had a crunch. There was a generous amount of minced pork and the XO sauce had a mild enticing spice. + HONG KONG STYLE RICE NOODLES (A$42): This is their version of a beef chow fun. The noodles had a delicious char flavor and based on how tender the beef was, I could tell it was great quality. Bean sprouts and chives added some crunch and the dish had just the right amount of soy sauce. Service way surpassed our expectations. Our waiter was so friendly, had a great sense of humor and went above and beyond by changing out our plates three times during the meal. Additionally, most of the dim sum items include only three or four pieces, so for the ones that only included three, he suggested just adding one additional piece to the order (at the price of an extra piece), so that we didn't have to get two orders of all of them. 4.75 stars.
Lovely ambiance, polite service, but okay food. Mr. Wong is a very popular restaurant in Sydney and requires a substantial deposit. The restaurant itself is located in an alley off bridge street. It has a nice vibe. But for the price I was expecting the food to be of much higher quality. The dimsum was overcooked. The Peking Duck was solid but definitely not elite. The stir fried mushrooms were tasty but a bit on the greasy side. The cocktails were quite good. The review is a reflection of what one would expect from a high quality restaurant.
If you're looking for an excellent Chinese food, highly recommend this one. From the moment you walk up to this place, it looks like a dimly lit abandoned bodega and located in an inconspicuous alley that similarly feels out of place. The only that gives away that there's a business there is the long line that forms 15 to 20 mins before they open. But it's exactly what adds to the curiosity and ambiance of the place. It has 2 levels for dining and a bar on the bottom floor. Once you enter. The waiters are lined up behind the hostess ready to welcome and wait on the customers. They have an extensive menu that you can request to be half or small size as they come in big servings and is on the pricier side. Thanks to my server who volunteered that information and he also pointed out the dishes, especially the vegetable dishes, cannot be ordered in a smaller size.
The lively atmosphere made for a memorable birthday dinner in Sydney. I opted for bar seating which was perfect for my solo dining experience. The bartender was personable and offered a few menu items. I selected the Sydney rock oysters... they were super fresh. I prefer sweet oysters and these were not. I also ordered the crab fried rice. The half of the half order was enough for two people. What I most appreciate about Mr. Wong was that it seemed less touristy and looked like more of a local spot. If you ever find yourself in Sydney, give them a try. I promise you'll enjoy the experience.
Mr Wong is a modern take on the traditional and heartwarming Cantonese cuisine, with stars including dim sum and Peking duck. We came here as a walk in on a weekday night, and they were thankfully able to seat us. It seems that this place is always busy when we pass by, filled with people dressed to the nines for a night out or in casual garb looking for a good, hearty meal. Mr Wongs is best when shared, as most of the dishes are quite large and you can hardly stick to just one. We got the Peking duck, king crab fried rice, wonton soup, king Pao chicken, XLB, cod, and braised pork belly. It was definitely too much food for two people, but I can't think of a single dish that I would have forgone. My advice is to go with a big group so you can try everything. My personal favorite fish was the cod. It was perfectly sweet and melted in your mouth. The rice was a close second and was definitely very filling. Next time I'd love to also try a dessert!
Delicious tea. DELICIOUS dim sum. We did think the sides were portioned WAY too big. We were a party of 3 and got the crab fried rice, 9 dim sum, the prawns, and green beans and we barely ate half of the side dishes which made me feel really wasteful. But the dim sum was divine and the service was delightful! And I could've drank the liquid the prawns came in as a soup it was so tasty! Beautiful environment both upstairs and down.
The food here is the best Chinese I've ever had! Forget NYC OR SFO or anywhere else. I've been to 6 continents and I don't take this lightly Wow It's unfortunate that our server was rude and short with her responses. I cannot say that would deter me from revisiting this establishment prior to leaving Sydney. Yes, it's that good

Wow the interior here is amazing! Beautiful street good feeling oh and Yum! The steamed dumplings platter was absolutely delicious and so was the Peking duck with pancakes. I would 100% recommend ordering both of them. We also ordered the fried scampi with chilli which was tasty but not as good as the other two. I would probably swap that out for another dish if I came again. Overall a really great night though! read more

My second time to Mr. Wong and is t gets even better... as I am from California I can't visit here regularly however it is a must every time you Come To Sydney. We ordered the short ribs, the honey chicken the butter and garlic Shrimp and the fried rice. I suggest not to get the shrimp as they are good but bland but everything else was amazing. Our cocktails were mediocre so stay away and stick to beer and wine.... read more

The best dim sum I've ever had, and dim sum is one of my favorite foods so I have tried many. What I really liked about Mr Wong was that it was creative but still traditional, small twists that made it better and more interesting without being creative for creative's sake. One of my favorites was crab dumplings in soup, fantastic, especially the soup with crabmeat in it. Also loved the pork long bad, juicy and flavorful. Pork turnovers were fantastic (I forgot the official name), with a lot of meat and not greasy. Duck spring rolls may have been the best spring rolls I ever had. I wasn't as crazy about the lobster dumplings, not bad but not particularly lobstery. Dying to go again to try other items on the menu. read more

If you have an expense account this is your place; enjoy your Power Lunch. Was in Sydney for holiday and decided to have lunch here as it was on many best of Sydney lists. What we got was the most overpriced subpar lunch. It began with a waiter who went on about their Dom special. When we didn't order Dom he asked if we wanted tea. Turns out that tea was $4 a person and there was a bunch of tea options he didn't explain nor show us. Instead we got yellow water, it was so weak. We didn't complain as we assumed it was complementary. Our bad. We did order a cocktail and it was the best part of the meal. We spent $60 for 12 dumplings. At $5 on avg you expect amazing. What we got were soup dumplings with no soup and shrimp and scallop dumplings, that while fresh, were bland, with wrappers that we mushy. It's very rare that I find Chinese food in need of more seasoning but it did. Next was the duck and fried rice. Everyone ordered the duck so we did too. But why? Not impressed. If you live in an area with a good Chinese deli you could get better duck. The fried rice was the same as the dumplings, fresh but bland. ~$150 of regret later we left full but unsatisfied. Just go to Din Tai Fung and gorge on dumplings. read more

The highly anticipated Mr Wong ended up meeting my expectations - the venue is fun, the vibe is energetic, and the food and service was quite good. We made reservations during the holiday week of NYE, so naturally, the restaurant was busy. After being seated, we were quickly greeted by the server and eventually, the manager, who was very friendly and welcoming. To begin, we ordered the steamed dim sum platter - the mix of prawn, crab, mushroom, and beef was perfect. The texture was great and flavors were bold. Then we ordered the king crab fried rice which was a great standalone but even better complement to our other entrees (garlic and chili go a long way in this dish). For our two additional entrees, we had the highly recommended kung pao chicken, and the roasted angus beef short rib. For two people (my wife and I), the serving sizes and quantity were more than enough (we had leftovers). To end, we had a delicious dessert - mango pudding with coconut tapioca, lychee granita and mango pearls. This was the show stopped for the night. I still speak to my wife about this dessert because it hit all the right taste points - ice cream, mango, and the creamy mix of it all. I definitely recommend Mr Wong and was happy that we had a chance to try it out despite the busy week. read more

I was headed to another eatery until they ticked me off so I bailed and came here instead. It was so good I came back twice.. The staff here is great very friendly and professional they have awesome service. Let's get to the part we all really care about, the FOOD!! I ordered the Dim Sum and the King Crab Fried rice.... The Dim Sum was so fresh and perfectly cooked (steamed) the roe on top was fresh, clean, and crunch.. I loved it... King Crab Fried rice was perfectly cooked, wasn't scorched, or overcooked. The veggies were perfect and fresh. They use real King Crab btw... None of that fake B.S. that they'd use in the states... The portions were a great size and I walked out full as a tick... I ventured to this restaurant for my birthday. The ambience was really nice. It is a large restaurant with a secret lounge connected to downstairs. I ordered the seafood steamed dumplings, a seafood dish and the fried ice cream. The dumplings were a little too salty. But the fried ice cream was to die for; and I don't usually like butterscotch. This place is great for groups. Would definitely return! read more
Came here for a work celebration lunch and we had the set menu. It was an interesting modern take on Cantonese food. The restaurant is also huge and the decor was very cool. My fave dish was the sweet and sour crispy pork hock! A couple dishes felt a bit too salty though. I don't think the dumplings were that special and you could get the same dumplings elsewhere for cheaper. read more
In A Nutshell: -Mr. Wong is quite a find! -It's hidden in an obscure alley, where you'll walk by Sidneysiders possibly smoking cigs or in a group of 2-3 chit-chatting. -After a few minutes of using Google Maps, you see a faded "Mr. Wong " sign. -Around the corner on the left, then see into the many windows into the LARGE restaurant. -Once inside you immediately feel transported to what I imagine to be 1800's Shanghai, China. -The ambience, staff dress, vibe, decor...everything feels classic China. -The service was 100% excellent, I think I interacted w/ atleast 6 different staff including the evening shift manager. -The drinks & food were all superb (look at the photos below). -This place feels like you would get "Shanghai'd", for you history buffs, you know exactly what I'm talking about ;) Overall, please take the time to excuse yourself & wander around towards the main bar & use the classically designed restrooms, while admiring the artwork/photos, duck room & open kitchen. read more

Tucked away in what appears at first glance to be a back alley, this restaurant delivers innovative takes on classic Chinese dishes. It appears that there's always a long line but we managed to get a seat at the bar after a short wait. I got the dim sum which were enormous, delicious and vibrantly colored. My dining companion got the sweet and sour pork, which was good, but had a lot of fat. read more
-edit- their desserts are so good... The mango boba and the fried ice cream... I wasn't going to write a review, but after the final dish came I had to. My family friend booked a table on Saturday night, and we had a private alcove like seating area. The fried rice, mud crab, and the red meat were the best things I've had of those respective categories. The meat is so tender, and the flavour of the crab is so rich. Service is wonderful, the atmosphere and the ambiance is so unique and cheerful yet nostalgic. Would definitely come again! read more
I'm very disspointed with this place. I'm here on vacation and I have read great reviews about this place. The service was HORRIBLE. the hostess was extremely passive aggressive. They put me at the bar next to the hanging uncooked duck. I asked for a table. She rolled her eyes and said she could get a table for me but I would have to leave in an hour and 15 minutes. The food was midocre. The only pro I found was the cocktail. They want me to leave so quickly...but they won't come to my table and ask if I need anything. That's unprofessional. How rare is it to say "Hey let's meet in a alley!" Well you can say that if you want to meet at Mr Wong's What a strange location for me Came to line up and it didn't take long to be seated, interesting interior and design,I like it! When we sat down to read the menu we noticed we can't see it! The older people in the group gave up,the lighting was too dim The standout was the Sweet and Sour Crispy Pork Hock,love the taste of the glaze around it,if I came back I would reorder this The rest is what I could get at any good Cantonese restaurant The Braised Hokkaido Scallops: The pepper taste just went up my nose and the black bean was a seperate taste to the dish,it's didn't blend in The fungus has a vinegar taste to it The scallops themselves was lightly seared My wife says the scallops in tassie were better, this was my second best dish The Steamed Fish Fillet didn't have much taste The Kung Pao Chicken didn't have the strong taste I was expecting,at least it wasn't overly spicy but just right The Angus Beef Cubes was a little over cooked and you could taste it and a little bit fatty The Stir Fried Snowpeas didn't have much taste either unless the snowpeas are soaked in the sauce at the bottom of the dish Service was great,filled our water when needed and easy to get there attention. Suprisingly the prices you pay,the portion size for a upmarket restaurant is decent Nothing I ate was bad but with a reputation it has i was expecting a lot more. You can't go wrong at Mr Wong! This back alley eatery in the heart of Sydney is like something completely different than any other restaurant downunder. From it warehouse appearance with wooden beams and floors, to lazy susans where you can spin a duck round and round. Order up some dishes and share the love. read more

Undoubtedly the best meal I've had. It was amazing. We went at on a Friday night around 8pm. We had to wait for a table for an hour. They took my number and text when a table is ready, we had heard great reviews about Mr Wong's so we're happy to wait. Once we were seated we ordered our meals and enjoyed a wine. There was a bit of a wait for the food to come out but considering how busy the place was it wasn't an unreasonable time. The staff were very friendly and helpful and had a rustic and trendy atmosphere. The size of the dishes was pleasantly surprising and we had enough to keep us well and truly satisfied. We started with the duck pancakes to share, these were delicious considering I've only had duck a few time. The duck had crispy skin and was so moist and paired with cucumber and soft tortilla like wrap and a sauce was a great start to the meal. A short time later we got our mains and with each dish we were amazed and delighted. We had Crispy Pork Spare Ribs, Salt and pepper Lamb Cutlets, Crispy Eggplant and King Crab Fried Rice. They were all outstanding with different spices and flavors. My favorite being the Crispy Eggplant as it ticked a number or boxes, it was crispy but soft in the middle had some chili, sesame seeds, shallots and fish sauce. It was a real surprise and could've just eaten it as the meal. The spare ribs and cutlets were also very nice and by the time we had gotten to the crab rice we were full but didn't want to waste this amazing food. I WILL BE RETURNING HERE. NO DOUBT. I am looking for an excuse to go back to Sydney just so we can. Don't miss this lovely place you won't be disappointed. read more

The food here is very good! It reminded me of my visit to China. I found it very legitimate. The place is very busy and large. I love the open kitchen idea because you can see what's going on, but also, as I said, remind me of China. The service is good as well. My friend and I were fortunate to get a table quickly without prior reservations because we were a party of two. However, for larger parties I noticed it takes quite long. They do have two bars for the wait and if planned ahead, the wait can be handled. Definitely, a highlight on my visit to Sydney. read more
