When we picked Chinese for dinner tonight, we weren't expecting it to have such a western ambiance to it. When we walked in Bridge Lane, I didn't think this restaurant would have a line outside. To be honest, I was expecting a hole in a wall, casual vibe. It turned out to be a huge place with a bar, an open kitchen, and plenty of space where ducks hang dry ready for Peking Duck. We sat by the bar as we didn't have a reservation. The menu items were not extraordinary, I mean, items were common like Kung Pao Chicken, dimsum items but they were cooked well and presented very well. Quite impressive. We ordered 3 items between two of us and we were so full.
Lunar New Year means Chinese food at a restaurant recommended by so many friends - Mr Wong. Arrived at 12 for lunch and was able to walk in with no reservation. This restaurant was very large -2 floors - we were seated in the basement which was a very cool ambiance- loved the decor. Ordered hot and sour soup, roasted duck pancakes, fried salt and pepper tofu, egg noodles with mushrooms and scallions. All delicious and very tasty. Service - prompt. I highly recommend.
Mr Wong is a popular Cantonese style cuisine restaurant located in Sydney CBD. It is hidden in a back alley. I recommend making a reservation as the place is often packed. The restaurant itself is large and occupies two floors, is nicely decorated, and has high energy vibe. We ordered the Peking Duck Pancakes, King Crab Fried Rice, and King Prawns, Scallops, and Calamari wok fried with XO sauce and glass noodles. The Peking Duck Pancakes comes with 8 pancakes and some scallions and hoisin sauce to be wrapped. I would say this is a 3 out of 5. The duck is more a traditional roast duck than a Peking duck. In a traditional Peking duck, the crispy duck skin is served separate from the duck meat. In this case, they just cut up pieces of roast duck to you to be wrapped. The duck skin wasn't particularly crispy. The King crab fried rice is served typhoon style which includes a healthy topping of crispy garlic and chili. It is only mildly spicy and the crispy garlic offers a unique texture to the crab fried rice. Decent portion of the crab in the fried rice. I would rate this a 4 out of 5. The King prawns, scallops, and calamari wok fried with XO sauce is our favorite. I would score if a 5 out of 5. The dish is served in a clay pot so it is piping out. Generous amount of seafood and the glass noodles soaks up all the sauce so is quite tasty. The drinks are also unique here and worth checking out.
We came before dinner opening to line up for a chance to try this place. It was walking distance from our hotel so we wanted to check it out. The place is pretty dark but the Chinese food was good. The peking duck was great and tasty. The fried rice was a bit salty for me and the wonton soup was okay. I would recommend to try if you're in Sydney!
This restaurant was mentioned several times in conversations about where to eat in Sydney so we had to try it. You must make a reservation. You will not get a table without one. Our reservation was at 5:30pm which is when it opened. There was a mob of people outside waiting for it to open. It was well managed when the crowd started filing in. Our waiter (Ben) was great. He walked us through the menu and size of options to help us create a perfect meal. We started with dim sum. We got the steamed option and customized it to be 6 pieces instead of 8. Lots of seafood. It was so good. While the duck pancakes were a signature item, we skipped them so we could try some other options. The pancakes are really more like make your own spring rolls or like an Asian soft shell taco. Looked fun but ok that we skipped. Next was steamed prawns. This was a fav choice. The prawns were cooked perfectly and the ginger and cilantro worked well with the taste and texture of the prawns. Finally, we had pork and shrimp fried rice. Again, very good. The restaurant is in a building that looks like a refurbished warehouse. The exposed brick and unfinished ceiling give it a cozy, authentic vibe. It's super busy and, therefore, quite loud. While we were there with only two people, I can see this being a great place with a bigger group to be able to share and try more dishes. Great experience. So glad we were able to eat here.
Perfect ambiance like a movie. What a hidden gem. Found it as we looked for another establishment and noted the big lines. So we figured food is probably worth it it. And much to our surprise everything we ordered was amazing. Including the green beans. This cannot be replicated @ home. Then infected friend in Hong Kong who is a foodie and confirmed that he visits whe he is in town! Great dimsum !!! Big lines to get in ,though we were able to snag bar seats. Overall the staff very attentive as usual for Sydney standards. Now comes the food. quality was above average and memorable to come back a second time.
Lovely ambiance, polite service, but okay food. Mr. Wong is a very popular restaurant in Sydney and requires a substantial deposit. The restaurant itself is located in an alley off bridge street. It has a nice vibe. But for the price I was expecting the food to be of much higher quality. The dimsum was overcooked. The Peking Duck was solid but definitely not elite. The stir fried mushrooms were tasty but a bit on the greasy side. The cocktails were quite good. The review is a reflection of what one would expect from a high quality restaurant.
This is one of the most iconic restaurants in Sydney. Based on my research online and when asking a couple friends, everyone was raving about Mr. Wong, so we made reservations about 1.5 months in advance to secure a spot! Each reservation guarantees two hours and we made ours for 2:00P. Their lunch hour ends at 3:00P and the restaurant closes for a couple hours before dinner. When we arrived, it was completely packed, but started clearing out after 40 minutes, so for the second half of the reservation, we didn't have any other customers around us and could enjoy our meal in a quieter environment. The prices here are on the steeper end for Chinese and dim sum dishes, but the options are very diverse and unique. I'd consider their dim sum items elevated and with many that I've never seen anywhere else. + JADE DUMPLING, PRAWN & CHIVES w/ KING CRAB (A$24): The large snappy prawn in each dumpling was the focus, especially being encased within an ultra-thin wrapper. I didn't notice more than just a pinch of crab, so that was a little disappointing. If not for the menu, I probably wouldn't have even known there was crab in there. + PAN FRIED SICHUAN STYLE LAMB DUMPLING (A$24): Exactly how it sounds, the filling of this crispy fried dumpling consisted of shredded lamb with some spice. It was pretty gamey, but also bold, and any fans of lamb will enjoy it. + CRISPY BEAN CURD ROLL w/ WILD MUSHROOMS (A$21): These were so good, we ordered a second plate! Similar to an egg roll, crispy bean curd sheets were filled with a mix of wild mushrooms and shredded carrots. The rolls were served on top of a hoisin-like sauce that was both savory and sweet. This is a must! + ROAST DUCK & CHIVE DUMPLING (A$22): The chives were pretty potent but I could still taste the five spice of the tender duck. The meat was lean and surprisingly didn't contain any fat or gristle. I enjoyed how unique these were and could have eaten another order of them. + BBQ PORK RICE ROLL (A$24): The rice roll was silky and had a good portion of chopped BBQ pork. We also ordered two items from the regular menu. + TWICE COOKED GREEN BEANS (A$34): A solid vegetable dish! The beans were cooked nicely and still had a crunch. There was a generous amount of minced pork and the XO sauce had a mild enticing spice. + HONG KONG STYLE RICE NOODLES (A$42): This is their version of a beef chow fun. The noodles had a delicious char flavor and based on how tender the beef was, I could tell it was great quality. Bean sprouts and chives added some crunch and the dish had just the right amount of soy sauce. Service way surpassed our expectations. Our waiter was so friendly, had a great sense of humor and went above and beyond by changing out our plates three times during the meal. Additionally, most of the dim sum items include only three or four pieces, so for the ones that only included three, he suggested just adding one additional piece to the order (at the price of an extra piece), so that we didn't have to get two orders of all of them. 4.75 stars.
When in Sydney go to Mr Wong for a fabulous Cantonese dinner. A beautiful old, dark restaurant with wooden walls that is always crowded. We had the excellent Peking Duck and superb beef cheeks. Good service which was helpful and courteous. But go for the food. You won't regret it.
If you're looking for an excellent Chinese food, highly recommend this one. From the moment you walk up to this place, it looks like a dimly lit abandoned bodega and located in an inconspicuous alley that similarly feels out of place. The only that gives away that there's a business there is the long line that forms 15 to 20 mins before they open. But it's exactly what adds to the curiosity and ambiance of the place. It has 2 levels for dining and a bar on the bottom floor. Once you enter. The waiters are lined up behind the hostess ready to welcome and wait on the customers. They have an extensive menu that you can request to be half or small size as they come in big servings and is on the pricier side. Thanks to my server who volunteered that information and he also pointed out the dishes, especially the vegetable dishes, cannot be ordered in a smaller size.
The lively atmosphere made for a memorable birthday dinner in Sydney. I opted for bar seating which was perfect for my solo dining experience. The bartender was personable and offered a few menu items. I selected the Sydney rock oysters... they were super fresh. I prefer sweet oysters and these were not. I also ordered the crab fried rice. The half of the half order was enough for two people. What I most appreciate about Mr. Wong was that it seemed less touristy and looked like more of a local spot. If you ever find yourself in Sydney, give them a try. I promise you'll enjoy the experience.
Mr Wong is a modern take on the traditional and heartwarming Cantonese cuisine, with stars including dim sum and Peking duck. We came here as a walk in on a weekday night, and they were thankfully able to seat us. It seems that this place is always busy when we pass by, filled with people dressed to the nines for a night out or in casual garb looking for a good, hearty meal. Mr Wongs is best when shared, as most of the dishes are quite large and you can hardly stick to just one. We got the Peking duck, king crab fried rice, wonton soup, king Pao chicken, XLB, cod, and braised pork belly. It was definitely too much food for two people, but I can't think of a single dish that I would have forgone. My advice is to go with a big group so you can try everything. My personal favorite fish was the cod. It was perfectly sweet and melted in your mouth. The rice was a close second and was definitely very filling. Next time I'd love to also try a dessert!
Delicious tea. DELICIOUS dim sum. We did think the sides were portioned WAY too big. We were a party of 3 and got the crab fried rice, 9 dim sum, the prawns, and green beans and we barely ate half of the side dishes which made me feel really wasteful. But the dim sum was divine and the service was delightful! And I could've drank the liquid the prawns came in as a soup it was so tasty! Beautiful environment both upstairs and down.

Spectacular traditional Cantonese in downtown Sydney. Reservations are mandatory. Started with the steamed dim sum platter. Had Singapore wok fried noodles, char sui pork, fish, snow peas and broccoli. The highlight was the Peking Duck pancakes. Served with mushrooms and hou sin sauce. Soooo Gooood. Service was extraordinary!! Kitchen is open for all to see the sights, sounds and smells. read more

Why does this place have such high ratings?! What's all the fuss about?! At the prices you pay to dine here the food should be amazing, but IMHO it isn't...not even close. Maybe we didn't get the right dishes...I'm really not sure. My guess is one comes here for the allure of the ambiance and the service...the food is definitely edible, but mediocre at these prices. Mr. Wong does Cantonese-style food in a larger than life way. Seating 240 people over two levels and serving a selection of up to 80 dishes, it's a big affair. Yet somehow the restaurant still manages to feel intimate, with nooks for two, dim lighting and moody jazz. (from the website) ~ Deep-fried dim sum platter - 4/5 I do like the fried dim sums. Just not at these prices...I've never ate or saw a place with dim sum at such prices...and while it was good, not astounding or unforgettable. ~ Steamed dim sum platter - 3.5/5 This was OK. The Veggie ones were not good and the meat ones were decent...once again...the price tag...yikes! ~ Crispy Fried Balmain Bugs - 3/5 We couldn't figure out what this was at first. One of the ladies working here told us what it was, but it was fairly loud and I think we might have misunderstood her or didn't hear her correctly. It tasted like fish, but a it chewier, took us a few bites to figure out it wasn't fish, but the "bugs." ~ Honey glazed Kurobuta " char siu" pork - 4/5 Not bad, good flavor, decent portion, but it doesn't melt in your mouth. Probably the best dish of the evening. ~ Steam fish fillets - 3.5/5 Typical steamed fish fillets. Light flaky white fish, but very bland, no flavor to it... ~ Angus Beef Cubes - 3/5 Looks like it was dipped in BBQ sauce. Dark pieces of meat. I'm not sure what the goal was...flavor was OK, nothing to brag about and once again not all that tender. ~ Stir fried flowering gai lan - 2/5 Ummm...NO. Skip this. Looks and tasted like watered down Bok Choy. Definitely not worth ordering. ~ Mr. Wong's special fried rice (Vegetarian) - 2/5 Yikes! I can do this better! umm...pass, bland no flavor, the most disappointing thing on the table. Definitely edible, but not at $25 The table service is fantastic, best I experienced in Sydney so far, very attentive and helpful. The ambiance is also very nice, the set up is very nice, the place looks like elegant and classy...but that's about it. I don't see myself returning here...unless I'm with some large group or company that insists on coming here and drags me along. read more
Wow -- So tasty!! I didn't expect to find such a place in Australia, but I was so glad I gave this place a try! Every dish was amazing, and my only regret is that I didn't order more! With the USD exchange rate the way it is, the meal here was a steal! Less than $20 USD/person for Peking Duck, Beef, Pork, and rice. I only wish I were able to try the seafood, but alas, some in my party were seafood adverse. I would love to come back one day!!! read more

Just want to start by saying that the food was absolutely amazing, would rate the meal 15-stars if I could. This place has been recommended to us by everyone we know from and around the area, and the food did not disappoint by any means. That being said, for a weeknight evening (albeit relatively busy and would understandably come with a few delays), our service was one of the slowest experiences we have encountered. We arrived 10 minutes early to our reservation time, but didn't receive water or have a waiter to ask us our drink selection for 30 minutes, and then had another 30+ minute delay between asking for the dessert menu and seeing our waiter again. We are normally low-maintenance patrons and don't truly complain about these kinds of things, but what would have otherwise been a 1.5 hour dinner turned into an over 3-hour meal, and both tables next to us had their desserts comped on the house in front of us as this happened (but not ours). We likely would have ordered another bottle of wine if given the opportunity before we were falling asleep having been forgotten by the staff! Overall, great food, great ambiance, but the slow service and observing multiple tables turned over around us (a nearby table we watched turned over twice during our meal) was upsetting. Just something to keep in mind if you're on a tight schedule or have plans following your meal! read more

Mr Wong is very pop and great atmosphere. Service, wine list, atmosphere is 5/5 stars. Chinese / Cantonese food is good. I went with local group I was visiting and went back with my family couple days later. Good enough to come back during short trip. Saying service is 5/5 is understatement. Great staff! Both nights did shared plates. First time did won tons, Duck pancakes, and mixed seafood. Next night did fried won tons (liked the steamed better), Duck pancakes, noodles, shrimp and chicken. Both nights had beautiful Can Sav blend Amy's from Margret River that was 4.5/5 and delish but has to open up and connect with the food ($85). Good on ya Mr Wong read more

This place is definitely an experience. First its a bit hard to find as its down a back alley. I think that just adds to the mystery of it. Even though the place was busy, we were able to get a table in the lower level. The lower level is a big open space decorated to look like an old warehouse. Overall the food was really good. Service was a bit slow but overall we enjoyed it. We shared a variety of food and had a good time. I had a nice Little Creatures hard cider from a local producer. It had a nice apple flavor but was very strong. I had to drink it slowly. We started with the Peking duck pancakes. The duck had a nice flavor, not too chewy as duck sometimes can be. Homemade wrappers. Flavorful duck sauce. We also had the PIPPIES wok fried with XO sauce. I am not a big shellfish person but I tried one. Too chewy for my but the rest of the group liked them. You order them by weight. For entrees, we had the Prawns, sea scallops and calamari wok fried with ginger and spring onions. The seafood had a nice flavor, tender and cooked well. Nice light sauce. We also had the King crab fried rice. This was really tasty. Lots of crab and loved the crunchies on top. Very filling but not super heavy. Overall a fun place especially the unisex bathrooms. They are very dark and mysterious and you get to walk by all the ducks hung up in the kitchen. Definitely an experience. read more

We came back in 2022 and the duck is still dry but some of the other dishes, like the Lobster and scallop dumpling and Prawn toast, were good. read more
Our first time visiting Sydney and we needed some comfort food - aka Asian food. We tried to make reservations beforehand but we couldn't find anything before 10pm. Our 2nd day in town, we decided to walk over as soon as it opened. The restaurant is tucked away in an alley. Unexpectedly, the restaurant is fairly large with 2 floors. The decor is not your typical Chinese restaurant - dim, modern, with a touch of regal-ness. As for the dim sum, it was so good, we came back another night for dinner. =) Dinner menu had a lot of choices and each dish we ordered was deliciously made. Authentic, fresh, and well prepared. It is pricey but you're paying for quality and ambiance - it's worth it! Definitely a place to visit! read more
Everyone raved about this place, so my roommate and I decided to give it a try. Reservations are required for groups larger than 6, but since it was just the two of us, we decided to walk in at an off hour. Luckily, we were able to get a table as soon as we arrived. I ordered the king crab fried rice and the vegetarian salad, I also tried a bit of my roommate's kung pao chicken. The flavors were surprisingly authentic for what seems like a very...inauthentic Chinese restaurant. I particularly enjoyed the salad! My only real gripe was with the huge serving of fried garlic on top of the fried rice - it was not only overpowering, but the pieces of garlic were so hard I definitely thought I broke a molar at some point during the meal (still concerned, will definitely get it checked at my next dental appointment). I'm still unsure whether the meal was worth the value though.. Service was mediocre. I got the feeling that we weren't being taken very seriously as we were the youngest patrons in the section that we were sitting in and had not ordered a particularly large amount of food. This is a great date spot if you're looking to impress, but this is not the place I would take my Chinese parents to. Take that as you will. read more

The food was fabulous - deliciously prepared and arrived in a timely manner. Our server was attentive and very helpful. The restaurant was hopping! We ate lunch and all the tables were busy but it didn't detract from the charming atmosphere of this vintage location. read more

This was recommended in our Lonely Planet book guide (which, I imagine, brings a lot of visitors in) and it did not disappoint! It was the perfect place to end a great week-long vacation in Sydney. I had the steamed Dim Sum dinner special and we split the duck pancakes & crispy eggplant - all amazing. Had a tiny space for dessert so we ordered the green tea tres leches cake; I don't regret ordering it but it's certainly a distinctive taste - you better like green tea The restaurant entrance is tucked away in one of the side alleys off of Pitt St. It was packed, even on a Thursday night but we had no problem finding a place at the bar, where they serve a full menu. Have no idea about parking since we walked here. And there were plenty of cabs off of Pitt for our return trip back. They also took extra special care of my friend, who had a peanut allergy. Overall, highly recommend! read more

What a sensational experience at Mr Wong! As a solo diner I felt comfortable and welcomed! The food was dynamite, service was great and the vibe was truly fantastic! Best dim sum I've ever had and the roast duck is devine! Highly recommend when you're in Sydney! read more

My husband and I were visiting Sydney and were looking for a nice restaurant for dinner. I came across Mr. Wong and was so excited to dine here since the dishes looked unique and delectable. Plus, we are always down for Cantonese! We ordered the following dishes: 1) Steamed dim sum platter (A selection of the day's specialties) - Nice presentation, but the dim sum did not taste unique. I was expecting a WOW factor, but this did not happen. 2) Roasted Angus beef shortrib ("Shandong style", soy, chilli & shallot dressing) - My husband ordered this and said it was actually well cooked, very juicy and savory. 3) White Tasmanian Sea Urchin/Uni Lo Mein - I was SO excited to order this, the pictures of this dish looked outrageously delicious, but upon first bite the dish tasted so bland. On top of that, the sea urchin was not buttery and was in fact a bit bitter. Disappointed in this dish. Service was amazing, but overall the food was quite underwhelming. And not sure if this is "normal" pricing for Oz, but in the U.S. these dishes would be considered way overpriced! Sadly, we wouldn't recommend Mr. Wong to any of our family/friends. read more

I was not expecting to like this place based on how it looked on the outside. You have to go down a sketchy alley and it seems very small and uninviting until you open the door. It's beautiful, and gives off a bomb shelter/speakeasy vibe. The staff was so friendly, and the food plus drinks were a hit. We got more duck pancakes since that was such a hit from the last restaurant, and they did not disappoint. Then we had the fried rice and Maryland chicken for our entrees. Overall good food and ambiance. service friendly enough. The dim sum and duck pancakes were flavorful and star of the meal. Could have done without the lo mein or fried rice. The fried rice was more like white rice with vegetables mix d together. Pretty sure there was no wok frying in the process. Flavorless and missing the crunch appeal. Would skip the cocktails next time. The Wu Tang clan cocktail was small and the Mulan Rouge cocktail was undrinkable. Pretty sure it was just a shot of straight up regular campari with a giant ice cube in the middle. Not coconut and no apple. Smelled and tasted like floor cleaner. Overall would recommend the restaurant otherwise. read more

We were in Sydney on vacation and wanted Chinese food. After a quick search we found Mr Wong. There was a 45 min wait so we went to a bar down the street and waited. The meal was one of the best meals I have ever had. We started with the Deep-fried dim sum platter. 4 were amazing, the last 2 which I do not remember what it was was okay. The main course was beef noodles which were perfect. Great dish. The wife had the honey ginger chicken and she liked it a lot. The restaurant gets busy so there will probably be a long wait if you do not have reservations. It is well worth it. If you can, make reservations. HIGHLY RECOMMEND read more

Way overpriced! Not sure why it has high ratings and why it's so expensive! Too many why's and not enough answers. Service was very poor. Server had an attitude. After the server cleaned our table he left and never came back. We waited for the tab for about 10 minutes until we flagged him down. Once he finally came to our table, he rudely dropped the tab on the table and walked away. The poor service made the whole experience worse. Food ordered was bland, the only plate that had a hint of flavor was the crab fried rice. Total spent was about $183 AUD. /: read more
Mr Wong is a high end Chinese restaurant in Sydney's Central Business District. It serves a wide range of Asian dishes and Dim Sum. The restaurant is in high demand, and waiting times can be high. When 2 of us came in 2015, we had to wait about 90 minutes for a table. This time I called ahead and was told it might take 60 minutes for a table for 1, but in fact I was immediately seated at the bar, where there was still great service. The environment is very modern and attractive. The space is dark (too dark, really), with attractive décor and tables that avoids Asian restaurant clichés. Service is very prompt, helpful, thoughtful and detailed, as you would expect from the highest quality environment. The menu selection is not huge, and each dish is portioned large enough for sharing. This is a much better place to come with 4 people than with 1. I ordered too much food and had leftovers as I wanted to sample more dishes than was rational. The food is amazing. I have been to a few other high end Chinese restaurants, and this is on par with them. Every dish is exquisitely flavoured and prepared. The Dim Sum were diverse and delicious, and each main dish stood well on its own or with others. This experience is not cheap, and the food totally justifies the cost. When I knew I was returning to Sydney, this was the only restaurant I knew I had to come back to, and I do not regret that. Highly recommended. read more
