Mr. Handyman is one of two companies in the St. Louis area that's certified to install Bilco steel doors. Here's the timeline for the engagement: July 22 or 23 - Handyman comes out to assess for quote. He said he'd have it done in 1-2 days. July 25 - I call and am told it can take up to a week for a quote. August 1 - I call back and I am told that Michelle, the office manager, is on vacation. No quotes processed without her. I wasn't told this when I called the previous week. August 7 - I get the quote. August 8 - I mail the check at my post office in Belleville. August 13 - Mr. Handyman confirms they received the check. August 16 - The Bilco door is ordered by Mr. Handyman. August 19 - Mr. Handyman cashes my deposit check for the door. August 23 - I call twice and leave messages. I am concerned that they received the check ten days previous, and they still don't know when the door will arrive. This is also a month after the handyman's visit. August 30 - The door is installed. I ordered a gray door. The door delivered to me was reddish-orange. The handyman told me that the Bilco factory didn't have gray in stock, so they ordered this color. Why did the back office at Mr. Handyman use my money to buy the wrong-colored doors without asking me, and then no one explains until they're in front of me and I asked? The handyman volunteered to paint the doors white to match my trim. I thought that was a nice customer service gesture. However, I bought the gray doors so that they wouldn't need to be painted and re-painted. The doors were hung with one a quarter-inch lower than the other. It's noticeable, especially when you see the handles. I politely asked the handyman why one door was lower than the other. He told me that he couldn't adjust them, which didn't answer my question. The problem with moving either door is that they're attached to a wooden frame under sheet metal. I think fixing it would require replacing the wood on that side. Anyway, I was presented the final bill. It was wrong. We had to call the office to verify and correct it. I waited five and a half weeks for new basement doors in the wrong color that aren't aligned right. I signed off and paid the balance. What a debacle. Next week I'll talk to someone else to see if there's any way to correct it. My handyman was a nice guy. He mentioned he has a heart condition, and I didn't want him out there in the hot weather any longer. I could've raised hell, but it had been such a bad engagement, and this guy looked beat. However, I felt that my overall experience was worth sharing. Earlier in all of this, I'd asked Mr. Handyman for a quote on other work. My handyman seemed to know his stuff and I had other small problems to fix. That quote took three weeks to receive. I actually forgot it. I had other people quote and do the work in that time. Unfortunately, the business was Mr. Handyman's to lose. In summary: I can't recommend this company in good conscience. They are on the less expensive size for mid-size jobs, but the organization lacks professionalism, and the work wasn't quite up to standard. Thank you. Edit: Reading the Bilco documentation, these doors are primed, but not painted. This is my mistake.
