I'm 5 feet tall and most of my pants need to be altered. I found this place on yelp over a year ago and have been a loyal customer since. Prices have gone up but it's still worth it. I've tried yelping other great alteration places and end up costing me $14/jean and ready for pick up in one week. I pay $6 here now and my designer jeans are super happy and look almost identical to the ones that aren't altered. Not to shabby for the price, time, and quality. Ladies working are super nice. I recently had the skirt to my suit hemmed I wasn't sure exactly how short I wanted it so I just hopped into the fitting room and she measured it for me with no problem. Days later, I got it back and saw that they even got the slit in back of my skirt perfect. These ladies know what they're doing! My whole family and most of my friends come here to get their clothes altered. Consistent and flawless. read more

cannot believe I've never yelped this place for all this time!!! Sure, it's quite a trek for me to go all the way to chinatown to alter something, so I usually save it up until I have a nice pile before driving down there (and paying for parking). The little ladies there only speak chinese, so it's a must if you're going to attempt to bargain or explain to them exactly what you want to be done to your clothing. It's a little hole in the wall shop that has 2 tiny dressing rooms covered with a small curtains, so beware if you're shy or claustrophobic. I personally am willing to endure that for quick and dirt cheap alterations. Hemming jeans with original hem will run you $6 (!!!) and if you don't care about the original hem it will probably be $3 max. For other items, it depends on the fabrics and the amount of work they would have to put in. These women can do wonders! I've taken everything here from gowns, designer jeans, dresses, and (wool) coats! There is nothing they can't take in or alter in less than a week! Sometimes they can have it back to you on the same day if it's something simple and it's not too busy. Super nice ladies and if your Cantonese is good, bargain her down! Also, if you leave your pile of clothes with them in a bag, don't expect to get it back when you pick up. They don't usually leave your things in the bags during and after the alterations. Got my $60 chinos hemmed for only $4. It took them less than an hour, and it looks really good. Don't think you can get a better deal than that. Looks like alot of other reviews are complaining about shoddy jobs, but I mean you get what you pay for. If your valuable designer suit needs to be tailored spend the extra cash and find a high quality tailor, not a small shop in Chinatown. P.S, speaking Chinese definitely helps. read more

I was wondering how Mrs. Ma got so popular on Yelp. She was a hidden secret. Well I guess it's because she has moved to a new space out front on Stockton. Same ladies, same speediness, same great prices and quality of work. Except they now have more room and more light, which I can only imagine makes the ladies happy, which can only make them even speedier and better if that's possible. Plus there are now 2 fitting rooms. Yes I said rooms. I have to get suit pants hemmed before I hop on a plane in a couple of hours. No problem, I'm collecting them in 2 hours. This place is the best. I didn't know about this place but I walked in during a shopping trip to Chinatown today and asked them to fix my jacket. One of the outer side pockets had stitching that was unraveling and I kept avoiding wearing that jacket bc it looked so janky. Anyway, the alterations team here sewed it for me for $7, it took like 15 minutes, and they literally did it on the spot. Lol and the stitch work is hella nice too, I think they even chose a colored string that matches the coat. I want to bring all my other clothes here for alterations now, the prices are so reasonable and the work is great. I'm on the petite side and I'd been looking for a reliable place to hem all my clothes... this place is it. read more

I've had multiple alterations done here in the past few months. I love how efficient and well priced the services are. Yes they are not exactly the most friendly people. Even knowing some mandarin does not help their attitude. But they do get the job done! Can't beat the 5 dollar pant alterations, simple tear repairs, and missing button repairs. Best part is same day pickup (usually within 1 or 2 hours) with no extra fees, which can be well spent by having lunch nearby. I haven't had them do a more extravagant alteration before though, so cannot comment on that. read more

Had a great experience here. I don't speak Cantonese as many of the reviewers do and had no issues getting my clothes altered. I had three pairs of pants and two jackets altered. Great price, turn around time was going to be 5 days. Paid an extra 15$ and was able to get it sooner. read more

I came here to alter a dress. Their communication skill is terrible. What's worse is that everything is clearly overpriced. They wanted to charge me $50 for a dress alteration and I told them I don't want to do it. And then they drop the price to $40. I told them never mind because I don't want to do business with them anymore. And then they asked how much would I agree to do it. ‍ The whole experience just made me feel very uncomfortable because they are obviously not honest/professional at all. I had a hole and rip in my jeans and needed to get them fixed ASAP. Most places usually take about 3-4 days to turn things around but Ma's was able to do it in less than 24 hours and at a good quality! This is definitely one of the best deals in town. If you happen to work or live in the area, $6 alterations are about as good as it gets. I went to a place locally and it was more than twice the amount for the same service. Most people that work here don't speak English, but one of the ladies does. There's a place to try your items on so that they can pin it yourself or you can pin it before you go in. It's $6 for original stitching. They take a few days for them to be ready and they're open on weekends. I happened to be in the area for a few days so I brought all of my pants that needed altering here based on my sister's recommendation. It's totally worth it. I'm not sure why this place has so many high reviews. I took a very simple dress in to get it hemmed and the result is nothing short of a fudged up job. How hard is it to sew in a straight line? Apparently impossible if the length spans more than an arms length. They don't seem to do quality check either because if they did they would see that what they did was utter trash. Back again with another review! I was still a little upset about them closing before their actual closing time, but I really can't say no to her prices! I brought in 4 pants to be hemmed on a Thursday afternoon around 1ish and surprisingly it was quiet there. Mrs. Ma asked me when I wanted to pick them up; I asked her if the next day by 3pm would be possible and she said it was not a problem at all! She quoted me $18.50 - the only price difference from before is the regular hem increased from $2 to $2.50 (but I'm not really breaking my wallet here). And I thought there would be an extra fee for "expediting" the work to be completed the next day and there wasn't. I was a little hesitant about picking my pants up the next day cuz I really wasn't sure if they were gonna be ready in 24 hrs, but I walked in at 3:15pm the next day and my pants were all ready for me! (It was chaotically busy that day with a lot of people dropping off clothes to get altered, so politely get the attention of one of Mrs. Ma's ladies by showing/waving your receipt and they'll assist you right away). Update: I needed to shorten a pair of Figs scrub pants that have the side-slit hem. Unfortunately they told me I couldn't keep the side slit and would have to settle for a regular hem. I had a tulle dress taken in and steamed for $20, and back to me in under 24 hours. Panic attack avoided. Some will find the ladies rude...but I said not. Measly and half-assed craftsmanship. They like to rush getting through tailoring your items. I brought in a maxi dress that I was to wear to a wedding, a beautiful chiffon one with multiple layers. When she measured the cut, she hastily and aggressively stuck safety pins into the dress (*cringe*) without consideration of the heels I would wear to the event. I emphasized that this was a very important article of clothing, and that I was wearing it to a wedding, so I was relying on her and please no rush in the tailoring. She then hustled me and asked for an extra $10 for her staff to work on it diligently. ... What? Would you not have put in your 100% otherwise? Regardless, I paid her extra. When I received the dress, the stitching was STILL botched up and uneven. Super disappointed. Mrs. Ma is a nice lady, and perhaps she wasn't the one who botched up the stitching. Either way, I don't trust the work among her staff and wouldn't gamble on an expensive item of clothing next time. Perhaps would only come here for quick fixes on straps of tops or whatnot. Mrs. Ma's rocks! Their price and timeliness has already been mentioned many times. What blows me away is that they can keep the original hem for only a few bucks more. They don't just duplicate it...not possible nor do you want some random ladies with a sewing machine attempting to replicate fashion. Instead, they shorten your pants by cutting the original hem off of your designer jeans, and sew the hem back on at the thread line. read more

Been here a couple times but only to get pants hemmed and I'm always impressed. Let me tell you this is the CHEAPEST place in the city to get your pants hemmed. I had two pairs hemmed for 8 bucks, EIGHT DOLLARS. I don't know which one is Mrs. Ma but they are quick. They had my pants done the next day! I will say it's nice to be able to understand Cantonese because they automatically assume you speak it, luckily for me I got away with my Chinglish. Ok I have read a lot of bad reviews but I really don't get it. People really bring their designer pieces here? I mean when you walk up to this place it looks like a Mom and Pop spot, a bunch of old Chinese ladies sewing, they don't know the difference between a $1200 Balenciaga sweater or a $12 one from Old Navy. You can't expect designer expertise for $20. I like them here but I'm not gonna bring anything expensive up in here. Quick and cheap and gets the job done. The actual hemming job they did was very good. However, one of the ladies got pen on my dress and didn't realize until I pointed it out and then they sort of got the stain out when I returned. It's not noticeable so it's okay but really not ideal. They charged me a total of $80 to hem two formal dresses - one bridesmaid dress was $50 because it was 2 layers at the bottom and the other was $30. What can you buy for $2 these days? Almost nothing. An adventure-filled ride on Muni, I suppose. $2 at Mrs. Ma gets your jeans hemmed. This in itself is pretty great. I took 10 pairs of pants here. 9 out of 10 came back just fine. They matched the thread to the color of the pants, and the workmanship seemed alright. The last pair, a maroon pair of jeans, came back with thread in black, but just in one area. It's like they ran out of maroon thread in the middle of the job. It's noticeable if someone is really scrutinizing the end of your pant leg. But for $2, I'm not complaining. Don't bring your complicated requests here. (I asked her to make a lining for a shirt and she basically said it would be a pain and declined.) And don't take your fancy stuff here. Do bring her your simple hemming needs. read more

Located across from Walgreens with inexpensive and efficient pant/jean hemming. The ladies here communicate mostly in Cantonese and can be brief with you as they mean business. A few years ago, this place use to be $4 for regular hem $5 for original hem. Now the price is $6 for blind stitch. I can't complain as they completed my blind stitch within the hour and the price hasn't changed significantly. I would not recommend bringing expensive items here that require extensive alterations but a pant hem or a simple one layer sleeve /skirt hem should be easy for them. read more

They do a good job with basic alterations and patching up old clothes(my hundsband rather pay $$$ to get his favorite old shirts patched up over and over than to buy new ones....and he's not the only guy I know who is like that!) But as far as politeness and patience go with those Cantonese ladies, they can't be bothered. I had a very well broken in vest from Mervyns that I couldn't bear the thought of parting with, the zipper was toast. Madame Ma's shop sewed in a brand new zipper that was an exact match, i can't imagine where she found it, for all of twelve dollars. To say that I was pleased is an understatement. FYI: Everything took place in Cantonese, but I'm also the type that doesn't like to bargain. I took my dress here, put it on to show her how it was a bit too large/loose in the torso, and asked her what type of alterations, if any, she can do. The owner, Mrs. Ma, helped me and told me it would be $25 and ready the next day. Keep in mind this is 10 minutes before closing time... She let me know she'd bring in the sides for a better fit, and I asked her if that was all that needed to be done. She said it was easy, nothing else needed. It's a strapped high-low dress, so indeed I didn't think the waist needed any taking in and trusted her opinion. I needed to hit up the atm first, and one of the ladies said I could just pay when I pick up, but Mrs. Ma said, "I want that $25 today." I told her I'm not in a rush, but that didn't change the price. No biggie, I ran to the atm and got her the money. I returned a week later to pick up my dress and there's a huge gap around the chest. I pointed out the problem to her. She told me, "it isn't because of my alteration, and you just wanted the sides taken in." She also said that maybe I just didn't notice the gap before. I was semi-mad and went to change. She started to say she could alter it again and said, "if you had put it on for me before, we could have seen the issue then." Seriously? I told her, "well, I DID put it on for you, remember the part where you pinned me in the dress last week?" Look, I'll blame my own inexperience on this one. This lady may be good for quick "alterations" like hemming pants for a cheap price, but definitely don't bother bringing in anything else. She probably over-quoted me because it looks like a wedding gown too. It was like reading money signs in her eyes. My mom got her pants hemmed like 4 inches, she's a small petite woman. And she said $2. I was like whoa what?! I didn't believe her. 2 weeks later, the FIRST TIME I ever needed my jeans hemmed. She said. $4 for both pairs of jeans. One word: MIND-BLOWNED. Given, they specialized in speedy alterations, and their quality are impressive. Small and tight stitching and the thread matching is pretty exact. Given, I got khakis and green jeans hemmed, the inside stitching of my khakis were lime green. I have searched long and hard for a good place to get my work pants altered for a reasonable price - DING DING DING!!!! Found it here at Mrs. Ma! I was starting to lose hope because every place I called, it ranged from $10-15 per pair! That is ridiculous!!! (I'm comparing it to my San Diego standards where it was $5 per). Luckily, I heard about this place from my mom's co-worker, and it's really a little diamond in the rough. For a nicer hem, they charge $4 a piece for professional attire. I'm not sure what the prices are for jeans and other articles of clothing, but I'm sure they are still pretty decent. I dropped them off, walked to Union Square and shopped for about an hour, and my pants were ready. They are fast, efficient, and do a great job. I must warn you though, it's in Chinatown, so don't expect it to be a 5 star institution. It's in the back of a little shop with two fitting rooms and a large alterations table... there's really not much to it. Parking can be a pain, but we always just park in the structure a block away from the store. Park in the structure on the side of the police station! The one across the street is more expensive and the spots are also a lot smaller - horrible architectural planning. read more

At first I had my doubts about this "Mrs. Ma", despite her excellent reviews. I was apprehensive about other reviewers claiming these seamstresses do not speak much English. The thought of handing over a $150 pair of jeans made me a little nervous. I was afraid that my hand gestures and pointing would not suffice, and I'd end up with a pair of really expensive capris. BUT: nothing ventured, nothing gained, right? I've been looking for my "dreamstress" for years due to several bad hem/alteration experiences...So I went for it and dropped a couple of pairs of jeans off during my lunch break (btw, I didn't hand over any $150 pair of jeans; I handed over some bitchin' $15 ones I got from a thrift shop that make me look hella skinny...so they're basically *worth* $150, right?). I walked in and took my jeans out of my bag, they said to try the jeans on (in English). They pinned the hems, I paid them $12 (total!) and they said to be by a few hours later to pick them up. There was some pointing and hand-gesturing, but they totally got it and definitely understood the words "longer", "shorter" and "original hem". My jeans turned out great! Being 5'2", I've pretty much accepted pants that drag the ground as an unavoidable fact of life, and I don't think I've ever even owned a pair of pants that weren't too long. However...I recently decided to up my professional game by purchasing a new suit and some slacks, and I was not about to risk murdering the bottoms of my fly new [and extremely expensive] business suit by dragging them along the filthy streets of SF. Soooo I went in search of hemming services. After Nordstrom quoted me something approaching 40 bucks--per pair--I consulted Yelp to see where I could go that wouldn't leave me defaulting on next month's rent, and I ended up in Chinatown at Mrs. Ma's cute little alterations shop. Best. Decision. Ever. I walked in and was greeted enthusiastically. I brought in 2 pairs of slacks to be hemmed ($4 each), a dress to be taken in ($15) and a blazer that needed a button reattached (she laughed in my face and did it for free lol). There are 2 tiny dressing rooms and I was promptly herded into one. Each time I came out, someone was waiting to pin my items. You pay when you drop it off, and they only take cash, but there's a Chase across the street (which was excellent since that's who I bank with). In the time it took to dash across the street and back, the button on my blazer had already been fixed. I was given a receipt and my blazer and was told that my stuff would be ready the next day. Mind you, this was a Sunday afternoon. When I got my stuff back, everything was great. The hems were the appropriate length (I walked around all week super happy at the novelty of owning pants that aren't too long), and you can barely see the stitching. My dress looks like I bought it that way and they did a great job matching threads. My only minor complaint is that some of the stitching on one of the hems are slightly crooked on the inside...but you can't actually see it when wearing them and I'd never have noticed had I not been closely inspecting it. Honestly, for $4 I'd say who really cares. Now I can take all my pants there, my wallet will be thrilled, and I can join the ranks of San Francisco peeps with awesome non-dragging pants :-) Winning at life! I just hope they don't realize how much they could actually be charging anytime soon. Oh, and don't take them your super nice Caché shopping bag because it WILL disappear into the abyss. read more

You get what you pay for. If I remember correctly, hemming work pants is $4 and tapering (taking in the sides) was $8. I dropped my pants off at lunch and picked them up the next day after work. I liked the job, but I decided to hold off reviewing: yep, the hem lasted only a few weeks. The finished hem is still there, but the single thread seam holding it up unraveled. Keep in mind, these pants haven't even been in the wash yet (I'm like a guy when it comes to laundry: I do it only when the "essentials" have run out). Since I usually hem my own pants and it takes forever with the pinning it on myself, taking it off, seeing if it's even, re-pinning, putting it back on etc, it was worth the $4 to have someone else do the cutting and the finished hem. I can sew up the hem easily now. If you don't sew, don't come here since the hem will need to be re-sewn. The other lesson learned: when buying on clearance, buy pants that are too long but not ones that are too wide. Hemming is cheaper, easier, and looks better than tapering here. The pants I got tapered were only tapered from hip to knee, so the line of my pants looks funny. I don't care too much since they were already baggy and made me feel like I was wearing jodhpurs; it's not like they look worse. read more

I'd rate 0 stars if I could. Where should I even begin? I brought in my prom dress here to get tailored for the length and the bust area. The bust area is covered in gems so yes I understand it's hard work to do so and that $20 is fine for the bust. But they charge me $30 for the length?! Are you kidding me. You cut 3 inches off then sew the bottom back together and they're going to charge me $30 for that?! That's ridiculous. It being more expensive than the bust area is just not logical. I was already iffy on willing to pay $50 all in total as i'm still a high schooler with no job so i try to bargain a little but they weren't willing to drop it so I just payed the $50 price because I trusted them to do a good job overall since I've brought in shirts here to be tailored in the past. I come in to pick it up today with my mom and she is furious that I even payed $50 for alterations because this price is off the scale. We come in, the length of the dress is perfectly touching the floor (how i wanted) but the back was about 1 inch shorter than the front! Nothing could've really been done and my mom complains to them about how they are going to charge me $50 and do such a bad job. And one of the workers implies that im stupid by saying "maybe you should teach your daughter to be smarter on what she spends her money on then." I was in disbelief...are you really going to say that about your customer?! I was furious! This isn't over just yet. My friends come over to my house to take a look at the dress and one of them points out the linings on the side of the busts, which I haven't noticed in the store! They were so crooked and the stitchings were so off, as if they were hand sewed on. The stitching wasn't even closed off all the way and one of the gems is actually right under the stitching all opened up still! My friends payed only $30 for their alterations somewhere else. Honestly, if they cannot work with gems on the bust area, they should've just told me instead of attempting to do so and ruining it. Overall, I payed $50 for a crap job and terrible service. These workers are so rude and I will not recommend this place for any type of alterations for anything besides basic shirts and pants! I plan to go back there and show exactly what a terrible job looks like that they're responsible for. ok, let me preface, this is a no frills Chinese seamstress place, so be forewarned....they have (2) dressing rooms with a flimsy curtain and the storefront doubles as a touristy chinatown clothing store. They say they speak english, but to be honest prb barely. Go here if you need to hem your pants, sew on some buttons, etc..BASIC ALTERATIONS. And here's what you've been waiting for the prices!! I brought in (1) pair of jeans and (2) pants to hem....they charged me $2 for the jeans and $4 each for the pants.....$10 total to hem (3) pairs of pants!! are you kidding me!! WOW, how the hell did Mrs. Ma's get on Yelp. I'm glad she did though cuz I LOVE this place! I've referred SOOO many people here for alterations. My crew is mostly Asian so you know our pants always need altering. Mrs. Ma, I'm not even sure which one she is or if she exists at all, has the best pricing and it hasn't changed the last 6+ years I've been coming here. It's $2 for alterating pant leg, $3 if it's slacks (more labor, yes $1's worth labor), and $6 for original hem. I feel guilty paying them so little, but hey, cost of living is cheap in Chinatown. They can buy lunch for $3. I've brought in a myriad of jobs to them like fixing a strap, putting on a new waistband, shortening jacket sleeves, etc. They really can do it all. I've entrusted to them all my designer jeans and I've always been satisfied. In fact, I just might bring my wedding gown here for alterations. Mrs. Ma better do it herself though!
