I wanted to have a jersey-knit dress with a built-in slip taken up 6" and I called in advance to get an estimate on the cost, but was told she needed to look at it to know. Fine. I said I needed it by Saturday in the morning. No problem. When I walked in, she was busy taking measurements on a customer, while another waited. I asked if she wanted me to come back since she was busy. Yes. So, I ran errands for about an hour and went back. I showed the seamstress my dress and told her I just wanted the dress taken up to the slip. She protested and said she would need to take up the slip as well because it would show. (Not if she hemmed it a 1/2 inch below the slip) I asked how much for both. I heard $17 and thought, "Great!" But, when I repeated 17, she corrected me and said $70!!! What? It's just a simple jersey-knit. No beads or lace or anything. A plain, simple dress that didn't even cost that much. I went to Kyoto Cleaners located right across from them and she charged only $20 for both. read more

They run some pretty shady business here. Always pushing their customers to pay with cash because their credit card machine is "broken." Well they've been saying it's "broken" since last year... If you aren't going to let your customers pay by card, you should mark your business as cash only. By the way, there were customers that paid with a card even though they kept pushing for cash. Also, there's been a big price hike in the past two months. It costs $25 to hem pants and $45 to take in the waist. If you compare prices with other tailor shops in the area, you'd notice that their service is overpriced. read more

I overall had an ok experience here. I had a bridesmaid dress I needed altered so trekked here from the Inner Sunset given the excellent reviews. The dress was a bit long and to take about 1.5-2 inches off the bottom was $70-80 which I thought was a bit steep... I had previously had a different bridesmaid dress altered elsewhere (which required that the entire length of the dress from the waist down be taken in so that it was more "form-fitting") and that was only $100 in comparison. When I finally picked it up, it was about an inch too short despite the fact that we had taken measurements. In terms of timeline, I was not in a rush so picked up the dress about 2 weeks after I dropped it off. The final thing I was a bit annoyed about - when I first came to drop off the dress, I knocked on the door and was made to wait outside for about 15 minutes. The space isn't big inside but it was big enough that I could have safely waited inside (I was masked too) while following COVID precautions. There was also nowhere to sit outside. Overall, not sure I will be back given the steep prices and mediocre outcomes. read more

I have 2 pairs of thrifted Levi's 501 jean shorts that were too large in the waist. I brought them in and had a really great experience. I was welcomed to try them on and the tailor made sure I was happy with the size/pinning. I got a reasonable and flexible time estimate for when the alterations would be done, and the price was decent. When I picked the shorts up they fit well and looked just like they originally did! I was very disappointed with the service here. I had two dresses I needed taken in for events for my wedding. This place had amazing reviews and was a block from my apartment. The woman who helped me was very nice, she pinned the dresses to fit my figure and things looked promising. But when she quoted me $110 I should've walked away. I didn't have time to shop around so I proceeded. I received my dresses two weeks later and they were not as form-fitting as she had pinned and were loose all over. I honestly didn't have the time or energy to complain but was just shocked that steep price didn't come with impeccable quality. I also let a bridesmaid know I went here (before picking up my garments) and she got her dress altered here. They completely ruined her dress so she had to overnight a new dress for the wedding. TLDR: Great service for alterations I couldn't get done elsewhere! Quick turnaround time and they were able to get me exactly what I wanted. I had a pair of leather pants that I needed hemmed by about 2 inches. I took it to another place first, where they originally told me they could hem my pants, but upon actually hemming it, they realized they couldn't do glued hems. When I took my pants into HK Alterations, however, they recognized the special hemming and said they'd be able to do it! They were really friendly and helped me measure out my pants to the desired length. My pants were ready for pick up just 4 days later, during the holiday season! They were exactly as I asked, with exactly 2 inches cut off and the hem mirrored the originally hemming. I was just glad they were able to alter my pants because a lot of other places immediately said they weren't able to do glued hems or leather material. Overall, it was $50 (a bit pricier than normal hemming due to the special material and hem), but I was pretty pleased with the work. Hong Kong Alterations is a no frills shop, but one that is very good at what they do. When I was looking for places to get my wedding dress altered, I was absolutely floored by the estimates I had received from other shops. Most of the estimates I got were about the same cost as the dress itself! When I contacted HK Alterations, however, they were accommodating and quick. I was able to come in the same day for a fitting and it cost about of the price of other bridal alteration estimates I had received. When I got my dress back, it was hemmed perfectly. The only problem that I had was that the bustle that was added had come come loose from the lace overlay and so it was very difficult to bustle up my dress. When it came down to it, however, the end result was good and it was a great value for the quality of work that was done. Definitely would recommend! read more

And of course, for a price quote. Shirley made two subsequent alterations on my 2nd and 3rd visits. Shirley is really nice and patient. She does a great job at measuring and providing her suggestion on how to make the dress fit me better. The ladies at HKA have made multiple pillow covers and hemmed dresses and pants for me over the past 10 years. (Upholstery fabric, jeans, silks). They always do a great job and are usually more affordable than most places in the city. I recently went to another place that is closer to me to get 2 pillow covers made: $40 later I had two bags with no zippers or buttons? I didn't think it was that hard to make a pillow cover - but never again .. I'll go to HKA as long as we are both in SF! read more

I have brought a pair of pants and a jacket to alter. The current owner did not follow the pattern of my original pants/jacket design and just do a horizontal straight cut across to hem it. I lost the border detail, despite it is not highly noticeable. The past owner would not have done that. The quality of the alternation has truly changed ever since the business has changed ownership. 2 things stand out. Had a jacket from Muji to alter. Particularly tricky fabric to sew, soft, textured fabric. They did a wonderful job. Second, brought a custom tailored suit in for a slight alteration in the pants. After she reviewed the tailoring, she suggested that to tear down the pants and restitch them would probably not deliver better results. Honest folks, good work... Can't ask for anything more. They know their stuff. Had a conversation with them today about the three industrial Juki sewing machines they keep in house to use for different types of fabric for best results.
