I have been taking my clothes to SF Tailors for years -- they are the best! Through all the changing denim trends, various formal wear for weddings and parties, and those incredible second-hand clothing finds that need to be tweaked to fit, they do it all. I just took two pairs of wide leg jeans to be hemmed -- they can mimic the "original hem" which if you are shorter than 5' 9'', you know that's so much of the charm of the pant. If you lose that, your jeans look like you sewed them yourself. Go to the professionals. :) PS -- They actually have very good hours of operation, for the record. They are open during the week, and you can easily call and make an appointment to fit your schedule. Remember, these are expert tailors that are spending most of their time in front of sewing machines and garments that they are paid to reimagine -- they are not standing idly in front of a cash register. read more

TLDR; Go to other places that are A LOT cheaper, won't screw with your clothes and has an owner with a friendlier personality. I'm right next door at MuleSoft, so when coworkers asked about good tailors in SF, I knew that this place was just one block away. However, I actually came here for the first time myself and was met with an inexperienced & nasty owner. I thought it was a great place since my friends have had no complaints. Well, my jeans came back like gun barrels, not tapered at all. I tried to understand how she screwed up since she's been in the industry for so long and how charging an additional $35 to fix her mistake on top of the $60 is unreasonable. She didn't even remember how much she charged me throwing random figures around like $40. Her defense was that they only cut the jean from the single stitching side (aka easy & lazy) and didn't know that the other side would need to be cut too. read more

I usually do my own adjustments to clothes - hence why my pants are hemmed with Yelp pins and why I always have a slew of safety pins lying around. But if you want a real professional to transform a too big coat into a form fitting fashionista find - then just take your ware over to SFT. San Francisco Tailors knows what's up when it comes to preserving the integrity of your clothes, while at the same time - fitting them to your body. I took a red wool pea-coat here awhile back and they did a masterful job on it. I also appreciate how honest this place this. I came in here the other day - carting a gorgeous Pendelton patterned coat that I had purchased on Ebay. The coat was obviously waaaay too big (despite being advertised as a small) in the shoulders, the sides, and looked ridiculous on. I quickly hauled it on over to San Francisco tailors. The main guy who works there took a look at it and said that he could definitely take it in - but that it would cost about $150 dollars (more than what I paid for the coat) - and that it may not be worth the changes. I appreciated his honesty and carted that oversized masterpiece home with me. Though alterations aren't always cheap here - the folks at San Francisco Tailors know what they're doing and their turn-around time is applaud-able as well. Trust. read more

After calling countless tailors in SF who can taper my selvedge jeans, I settled on SF Tailors. Self Edge (the raw denim shop that recommended me) highly recommended SF tailor. Since I spent an ungodly amount on these jeans, I might as well spend another $55 to taper them. Selvedge denim is a bit different from regular denim. You need to taper from the inseam and most tailors don't know about this. Tailors also need to have a chainstitched machine. I was quite reluctant going in but the owner reassured me that he's worked with many many selvedge denim. I put my trust in him and came back a week later extremely impressed and satisfied! The thread color never changed colors and they used the same chainstitched method on my jeans. You can barely tell it was altered. I had another pair of regular jeans hemmed and i didn't have any complaints about that either. I highly recommend this place if you have complicated and expensive denim to alter. Looking to get a bridesmaid dress tailored? I was and decided to give San Francisco Tailors a chance because of their location and good reviews on Yelp. The bridesmaid dress was $130 and I paid $90 to get it altered (trust me, I'm never going to wear this dress again). For $90, oscar took in the bust area and tapered the aline of the dress. He also shortened the length for me. Pros: ready in a week; quick and fast results Cons: *cash only *during the wedding I noticed the a little part of the seam was coming out from under my dress....(yes to my chagrin, i was unraveling!) i just cut that part off but i was definitely thinking it shouldn't be unraveling if I paid $90 to get it altered. *I arrived at 9:00am and waited until 9:20am but they were still not there so I ended up having to come by during my lunch break which was a little inconvenient read more

I decided to try them out based on Yelp reviews. Sadly, the bad reviews that they did receive were not done so in vain. Customer service is significantly better with regular customers than with those who are new to their business. It is almost as if you must pass a period of time before you are deemed worthy of their friendship. That aside, the main reason I WILL NOT make use of their services in the future is their less than mediocre workmanship. I ordered 3 pants to be hemmed and all 3 ended up the same way. The stitching inside was CRUDE and equal to the skills of a 7th grader in home economics. The thread from the previous stitching was NOT entirely cleared out. The seams were misaligned. There were places where the fabric was cut, and LEFT unsecured, leaving those places to fray and unravel over time. Lastly - and this I COULDN'T believe -, there was a piece of fabric that they seemed to have forgotten to press down before stitching it - essentially leaving the fold permanently stitched in place. All in all, this place was cheap and quite quick. And while the final results looked good on the outside, closer inspection unveiled a different story. They may have well have ironed my pants to where I needed them hemmed, and secured the fabric with a stapler and a glue gun. San Francisco Tailors's star rating on Yelp is NOT enough to convince me of their reliability. However, you may want to figure this out on your own, as I did, and will NEVER do so again with San Francisco Tailors. read more

If there's anything I cannot stand, it's a business that isn't honest with their pricing. Went into San Francisco Tailors to get a pair of new, selvedge APC tapered. I originally tried going to Self Edge (who has a great reputation in the denim industry), but they don't taper and referred me to SF Tailors due to the "quality of work". Stopped by the store, measurements were taken, and I was quoted $75. Seriously? Without thinking much, I took the return slip and left the shop, only to learn later that other patrons were charged $55 for the exact service. On my return pick-up day, I commented on the found prices and was told that $75 was actually a discounted price. They now charge $85 for tapering. You've GOT to be kidding me... Overall, the entire experience just felt very shady... never again. read more

I was being a delinquent bridesmaid! I needed to order my BM dress but delayed in doing so because I didn't have my measurements. I found SF tailors and popped in (after finding them on yelp) to ask if they could take my measurements. I met Sally. She was so extremely nice and graciously took them and recorded them for me. I can't review them on alterations just yet, but I do plan on coming back. $15 for original hem on jeans and $10 for trousers without a lining. Very convenient location that's close to work! I would like to share my recent experience with you about SF Tailors. Many of us who buy and wear high end designer clothing will surely understand and relate with me on this subject. Generally, when we purchase clothes of the rack, it will require some type of alteration whether it be shortening a hem or taking in or letting out a seam. Therefore, it is crucial that it is in the hands of a qualified, skilled and experienced person who specializes in all aspects of tailoring and alterations. I purchased a new Dior Homme black blazer in a lightweight wool suiting. It is a classic tailored blazer - single breast, notch collar and fully lined. It required some minor alterations, the sleeves needed to be shortened 1/4" and the blazer length by 5/8" I called upon my tailor-alteration specialists who works at a reputable retail establishment only to discover that he had retired. He is in my opinion, the last of dying breed in this industry. He took pride in his work and it showed in his workmanship. So now the process of finding a new tailor of the same caliber becomes a challenging situation. Where does one begin? As referred by a friend, I decided to take it to SF Tailors located in Union Square. I brought my blazer in and introduced myself to a woman named Sally, (co-owner) and told her that she was highly recommended. She was busy with a customer who was being fitted for shortening a pair of jeans. I sat and watched Sally work on the customer, she seemed self-assured and efficient. She made me put on my blazer and we both agreed that the sleeve and the blazer lengths needed to be shortened. She pinned, marked and noted the adjustments and wrote up the invoice and told me when it would be ready. As scheduled, I picked up the blazer, paid Sally the 105.00 and said I would like to try it on. My immediate reaction was satisfying, the changes were subtle but it made a difference. I thanked her and left. That evening, as I was dressing for a casual night out in jeans and a tee, I slipped my arms into the blazer and immediately felt something awkward rubbing against my forearms. I turned the sleeves inside out and was dismayed at the crude and amateur method they had used to finish the garment. One each sleeve lining, the forearm seam from the wrist to the elbow level, the seam allowances were folded together and machine stitched from the outside forming a stiff ridge. I checked the finishing on the jacket hem and it too was poorly executed. The hem of the jacket was not finished by hand as it was originally, instead it was sewn by machine except for the small opening which was sloppily tacked together. The next day, I called Sally to express my dissatisfaction with the finishing of my blazer and that the sleeve lining seams felt uncomfortable on. She made a cynical comment about why I didn't wear a shirt with a jacket. I explained to her that the workmanship was not up to the original production standard and that she took short cuts to eliminate any type of hand work and had no regard for maintaining the original construction. It was not up to par for the amount she charged me and I wanted it repaired. Her response was I should have specified what I wanted and that is considered extra custom work. I told her it was not my position to tell her how to do her job. It goes without saying, that you don't make critical changes to a garment and it should have been sewn and finished like the original. I told her that I had similar work done before and it was perfect just like the way it was intended to be. Her voice became increasingly louder and telling me that I did not know what I was talking about and that in the 15 years of business no one has ever complained about them. (please refer to past reviews) Little did she know that I am a pattern maker by profession with 25 years experience. She began verbally berating me, repeating louder and louder that this is how its done, there is nothing they can do about it and that was it. I responded by telling her that her behavior was unprofessional and the next thing I realized, she hung up on me! The purpose of a lined garment serves several purpose. First, it visually looks good from the inside out and it conceals all the seams and inner construction. Second, it should feel smooth and comfortable to the wearer. My main complaint is the shoddy workmanship and little regard for the integrity of the original construction that one expects from a well made expensive garment. They compromised the quality, while deceiving the customer to make a quick buck. This is unconscionable trade practice. Therefore, my only recourse here is to post this review on Yelp. They are incapable of detailed work that requires true tailoring. Please reconsider doing business here. read more

I am a procrastinator. I got an extension for my taxes and still waited until October 15th to get them done. I stay up all night before I go on vacation because I am doing laundry and packing and cleaning. I also bought a ton of expensive jeans last year and never had them hemmed. Which means they haven't been worn. In a year. And I wear the same two pairs of jeans all the time - and they have holes in them now. They didn't come that way - they're actually worn through. So I finally got around to getting the others hemmed. I was torn between these guys and Cable Car Tailors - but reading how gruff Cable Car is with customers really turned me off. Last week was a week where every man I've been involved with recently crawled out of the woodwork to tell me how terrible I am, so I wasn't really in the mood for any more mean men. So I went to San Francisco Tailors. I was very pleased with them - I thought they were nice and professional and very reasonably priced. But one thing I don't get - why is everyone so obsessed with the original hem of their jeans? Seriously, mine are going to get that 'perfectly worn' look on their own soon enough, why do I need to get the originals sewn on? They fuck up the way your pants lay anyway - don't you realize that? I love designer jeans, but hate the fact that I always need to get them altered (thanks to being asian, not super short, but even with heels I need them altered). I was hesitant to try this place at first, because I had a bad experience with jean alterations at another place. Of all the times that I've been here, I couldn't be happier with their work. They do a great job with original hems when I brought Joes, Sevens, and True Religions. When I gave them a pick up date, they always made it and alternations can be completed quicker for a little more $. They even provide shoes for you to wear if you forgot your pair at home. The only complaint is parking is hard to find unless you plan to park in the garages and do some shopping. Other than that, I would recommend this place for jean alternations. P.S. It's a little hard to find this place while driving, but make sure you pay attention to the signs and go up the elevator, because they are located right next to another tailor shop. read more

They did a good job for me on several pairs of pants. But then I brought in a dress...and now I won't go back. I had asked them to take in the waist on a dress that had a back zipper and two back darts, one on either side of the zipper. Perhaps it was a difficult job, I don't know. When I got it back, the darts were unevenly spaced around the zipper. One of the seams was farther out from the middle of the dress, essentially -- really obvious. But when I pointed out the unevenness, the guy behind the counter 1. Denied it 2. Whipped out a ruler and measured it (verifying that it was, in fact, uneven.) 3. Suggested that the dress was already crooked, and I should have measured the spacing of the darts before I brought it in. I said, "Do people usually do that?" read more

At the recommendation of a local business, my husband and I took our suits here to get tailored before our east-coast wedding. The gentleman who helped us seemed to know what he was doing, marked our jackets, vests, and slacks. When I picked up the clothing my pants fit fine, but my jacket didn't fit as well as I had hoped. No biggie, I thought, perhaps my expectations were unrealistic. My husbands jacket did not fit well. One side draped much lower then the other. We asked the tailor to fix this. He immediately became aggressive and informed us he would fix his work for an extra price only. I didn't think that was fair, since his work didn't pan out the first time, but we finally agreed. After coming back in two more times to get the jacket tailored, it still never fit. The tailors attitude throughout this experience was combative, and condescending. We called it a loss, and went to the east-coast for our wedding. On a whim we stopped by an east-coast tailor, and asked him to take a look. he opened both of our jackets from a small side seam and (drum roll) he said that our jackets had NEVER been tailored! The buttons had been moved around many times, but there had NEVER been any tailoring on the inside of the jacket. He showed us some technical stitches, and various things that he said proved that no hands had ever touched this jacket after the machines sewed it up. When we came back from our wedding we went into the shop and very calmly told the tailor we would like a refund for the jacket tailoring only. He became wildly aggressive, told us to get out, and we eventually left calling it a loss on our part. The business is CASH ONLY, so we weren't able to dispute this with our credit card unfortunately. He did a good job on our pants, but he charged us for work he never did on our suit jackets, and was very difficult to deal with when we needed his work revised. Thank you Becky, for being the most amazing bride ever who was awesome enough to choose a bridesmaid dress one can wear over and over again. After reading up on multiple alteration spots in the downtown area, I finally decided that SF Tailors was the one. Originally, the dress was knee length and I basically wanted to make it into an LBD (a short one). The sweet woman behind the counter was very friendly and patient with me when I brought it in last week and decided to try it on with two different pairs of shoes while she was pinning it up. We decided on a short (yet, still classy) length and I couldn't have been happier when I picked it up today! No uneven seams or jagged hems/edges. My dress is 100% perfect and doesn't even look like it's undergone surgery! So why only 3.5 stars instead of 4 or 5? Because it cost me $30 AAAAND, they're CASH ONLY. Seeing this guy tucked in between Paul Smith & Neiman Marcus, around the corner from the Goorin Brothers, Jack London may as well be on the stoop south of the slot, when I turned into the tiny door for this tailor. I had a little too much fun at the designer jean warehouse sale. It was all the therapy i needed that day though, and four pairs later I felt great!! One pair i found fit me like a glove. I had actually owned the same Diesel jeans before, in a different wash, but lost them, so imagine my joy when i found them again, and they fit just as nice! Problem lies here. I'm short. Not tragically short, but short enough that most jeans i buy need to be altered, so after getting advice from yelpers, (yup that's right, used the site again), I went to the San Francisco Tailors today with the three other pairs. I was in and out in 15 minutes. $10 to keep the original hem on two of the pairs, and $15 on the third, but only because its flared. He even let me choose my pick up date! They will be ready on Thursday at lunch! That is some quick turnaround. So far for customer service alone, they get 5 stars. Why is it that all designer jeans are made for super tall people?? I'm Asian, and 5'5"...not super short, but I still have to chop a few inches off my jeans even though I wear them with 3 inch heels. I brought in a suit that another tailor nearby had pretty much messed up. Based on the Yelp reviews, I thought I'd be in good hands. (I should have read more carefully - most of the positive reviews seem to be people who have had jeans hemmed here, not suit alterations.) On the positive side, the lady who I think owns the shop with her husband, fixed the pants. The previous tailor had sewn part of the lining and caused it to pull and distort the fit in the crotch. She also reduced the material in the hip so the pants fit smoothly. Unfortunately, the jacket gave her more problems. She didn't get body of the jacket to fit smoothly. She also couldn't fix the roll in the upper back, despite several attempts. After my third visit, I finally told her that I decided to give up. She blamed the previous tailor (of course). She also didn't offer to do it right or to discount the work ($135) since I wasn't satisfied. I might have argued about the bill but at that point I just wanted to get away from these people. This place is fine for basic work but are definitely not master tailors. I might have given three stars but knocked off a star due to poor customer service. read more

Hit or miss with this place. Mine not so expensive pants, they did an ok job but I recently bought a really nice suit and brought the pants to get hemmed. Ok, I figured how can anyone messed up on hemming...they did. There were little dots running around the hemmed area and they are not even straight dots.The worst part is they pressed the pants to the point where the pants has artificial embroided lines. My brand new pants now has lines all over...and it's 3/4 inch shorter than what was measured before. It's just amazing how they could destroy an exciting feeling I had when I just bought the suit...and now, a frustrating feeling. Allow me to tell you a story from days of yore. Once upon a time, I lived in a dorm. There were many girls named Katie in my building, hence the need for nicknames/ specifications. Due to the caliber of the creative minds at my institution of higher learning, last initials simply would not do! No, people needed something descriptive! No, I was not known as "Crazy" Katie. Alas, not "Hot" Katie either. (But it wasn't so bad, as there was no "Hot" Katie, at least to my knowledge. Those 18 year old boys are sly, I tell you.) No. I was Katie "Paltrow." Because they thought I looked like Gwyneth. Mostly I guess because of my long blond hair and relatively tall stature. Anyway, it was eventually shortened to "Paltrow" or "Katie P", and once senior year they put me on the guest list for a club as Katie Paltrow, it was TRES embarassing... but I digress. Remember in like 2000 or something when Gwyneth Paltrow wore that big pink dress when she won her Oscar, and her straps kept falling down? I allude to this incident to illustrate something else I have in common with Miss Gwynnie... a short shoulder-to-boob height. Hence the need for an awesome tailor. To avoid the saggy strap, ill- fitted look of the Pink Dress, Gwynnie and I require the services of an awesome tailor. And thanks to Yelp, I found Isaac at SF Tailors! He knew exactly what to do with my dress without me even needing to really explain, and I can't even tell it's been altered except for the now- perfect fit. My half- inch hem is also PERFECTLY even. And, when I asked, he steamed my dress into fluffy, flowing perfection. All for $45, in a 4 day turn around in December. If that's not service I don't know what is! In a large city like NYC, you would think there would be tailors everywhere but unfortunately, the best ones cost a fortune or I'm not impressed to just going to a dry cleaner. Anyway, I lucked out with SF Tailors when I was living in SF. I bought a really nice Ann Taylor suit at Westfield Shopping Center and I asked the sales associate if she had any recommendations on where I can get this suit tailored. She handed me the SF Tailor business card and reassured me that they are the best. So the next week, I go over to Geary street and make it over to their cozy shop on the second floor. I come in with my suit and tell them exactly what I want with my blazer: Shorten the sleeves, take in 2 inches at the waist. For the pants, I needed it hemmed and since I hate how those pants have the bubble sides at the thighs (I have no hips), I asked them to give it a straight cut as well. Without blinking an eye, he marked up the suit and asked me when I wanted it ready. I told them I wanted it ready next week. The overall cost of the two piece suit was $50 (2006 prices) and I've gotten so many compliments on the suit. Not only did I have a suit tailored, I've had several pants and jeans hemmed as well. This was the first time I've heard about jeans keeping the original stitching and it costs about $10 more but worth it to keep the design. I recently purchased a couple of new Zegna suits and dropped them of to Isaac for a more fitted look. Although Zegna suits are already fairly fitted, I like them extra, extra fitted......because I have a bod that is just so ripped, defined and toned..........I really do:) Well, Bottom line is that a great tailor like Isaac at SF Tailors is able to tailor the suit excatly to my liking. I am very particular about my suit cut and fit and SF Tailors never disappoints. A $1,300 Zegna suit only looks as good as it is tailored! read more

Ok so I held off on bringing in my designer jeans to get them hemmed. I was getting good at finding ways to fold them up and have it not appear obvious, but some of them were just TOO long. First, I was nervous about the whole alteration thing. I had never trusted anyone to cut up my clothes before. And two, I didn't know WHO to trust. Thanks to Yelp, I found SF Tailors! Nope, cheap Mrs. Ma's isn't gonna do it for me and apparently Andreas Gorges doesn't get things done on time. I dropped off 3 pairs of designers jeans to get hemmed and my favorite part about SF Tailors is that you can choose when you want to pick your stuff up!! I picked them up 3 days later and they did a better job on some pairs than others, but still, a great job. The stitching is very close to the original stitching. I'm picking up my Trues and Citizens today and I'm excited to get them back! read more

I bought an awesome pair of Citizens jeans when I was in Vegas. They fit perfectly except they were way too long. Now I've never had jeans altered, nor have I ever used Yelp for a service like alterations, but in this case I will do many more because of Yelp. I took my jeans to Isaac at SF Tailors and they did a great job. They're the perfect length and they kept the original cuffs too. $15. And they managed to get it back to me within four days, just in time for my birthday party. Nothin' but good things to say about these folks! read more

Did a decent job all things considered. However, there was so much he could not do to my coat. He couldn't move the buttons, couldn't fix the neck/shoulder effectively. Now, I understand that isn't as easy as bringing in the back or fixing the arm length. But, I was willing to pay for that. Oh well, we have a great tailor. Words can't express how grateful I am to the staff at SF Tailors for altering 2 obnoxiously long bridesmaid dresses for me in record time. I trust they do jeans well as every yelp review attests to that. My sister had 2 weddings. One in 2007 and one in 2008. (Same guy, different location weddings, don't ask why) I had 2 vastly different dresses and they worked wonders on both. I'm 4'11" most store bought dresses cater to the taller class of lady. The first dress I took here needed about a foot of fabric and tulle chopped off the bottom. It also needed some bust reinforcement as I was spilling out of the top. Sally picked up on this before I could say anything and pinned the front closed so I'd be decent. The second dress was less tulle, more chiffon and needed about a foot and a half removed. Do the guys here a favor and get your stuff here at the very least a week before you need to be anywhere so they can get it perfect. The first dress they needed to adjust a second time and I managed to pick it up right before my flight. And yeah, Cash Only. And be nice, because they are awesome. Thank you. read more

I was really excited to try this place after reading so many good reviews on here. I think the facts of what happened speak for themselves so I'll leave you to come to your own conclusion. I dropped off two shirts and a pair of jeans; the shorts were to be taken in on the sides and in the back, the jeans were to be hemmed. The woman was very friendly and nice and clearly knew what she was doing. When she handed me the claim ticket as I was leaving I learned that it was all going to be $120. This was slightly less than double what the same alterations would cost anywhere else. At that point everything was pinned and so I justified paying the higher price by the time it would take to undue it all and find somewhere else. Two weeks later I show up to pick everything up and the shirts are done as expected. The jeans though were hemmed with a brown instead of gold thread and were missing a red stitching detail I asked them to keep from the original hem. When I questioned the color of the thread the tailor quickly became less than friendly and told me that it's not possible to ever match the threads. She retrieved 5 different colors and told me that was all she had and I needed to pick one and she would change it but then it was on me to live with it. So I picked why matched the best in the light of the store and returned a week later to pick the jeans up. As soon as I got them outside in sunlight it was obvious that the color was very off from the rest of the stitching on the jeans. At this point I just ate my losses and went to Nordstroms. I had to pay a premium because it was not an item that was purchase at their store but figured with all the jeans they hemmed they would know what they were doing. Sure enough, they found an almost exact thread match within minutes and redid the jeans while I waited. When done they explained that there never should have been an issue as the correct way to hem jeans is to pull the thread from the original hem and reuse it.....this way you always have an exact match. Short of it is I learned my lesson and had to pay twice to have a simple job done. You can not charge a premium price and do lower quality work (and not matching the thread is lower quality work). read more
