The quality of care and professionalism at this hospital is absolutely horrific. I sincerely apologize to anyone who has the misfortune of finding themselves or their loved ones at Mt Auburn Hospital. The staff are completely rude and unprofessional, their bedside manner is unacceptable and their incompetence is evident for all to witness. When asked by a patient about their condition, they never seem to have an answer. When asked why certain procedures or measures are being taken in a patient's care, they respond with hostility to being questioned. When loved ones inquire about a patients condition, the staff treat them like nuisances at best and criminals at worst. I have never been treated so terribly at any medical facility. If I were to describe this hospital with two words it would be unprofessional and incompetent. The management needs to conduct a complete investigation into their staff, this hospital should not be allowed to treat their already stressed and upset patients in this manner. As I write this, we are watching two other visitors being interrogated and asked to leave the hospital by a public safety officer for "harassing" the front desk at the emergency room. We have been with these two visitors the entire visit as they have anxiously waited for their friend and been denied both answers to all of their questions and the right to visitation. I would like to reiterate, a public safety officer was called on two visitors for making multiple inquiries about their friend. Multiple inquiries that would not have had to have been made if the staff had given an answer to any of their questions. We received similar treatment when we tried to ask for the name of the nurse who was treating our friend. Everything was secretive and the treatment we received for asking questions felt vindictive. This hospital needs to be investigated, they should not be allowed to treat any person this way. read more

The worst hospital, staff and ER ever. I was taken there with ambulance with 120 and 160 blood pressure. I explained the doctor/nurse that I didn't take my medication because I didn't have it that moment. But because they didn't find my info in their database system they didn't help me at all. I wasn't accepted to the hospital by a man who told that he can't find my SSN number in the hospital system. I am going to sue them. read more

I've had a few meals here now and overall recommend it. The standout is the Mount Auburn Breakfast Sandwich, which is an excellent example of a classic sausage egg and cheese, with perfectly melted American cheese. The cheeseburger is also solid and comes with your choice of sides and drink included, a great deal! Service was great, with food arriving quickly, delivered by friendly servers. You also have the option to eat in bed, a luxury no other restaurant I know of offers. I wouldn't go out of my way for a meal here, but if you're in the building already, it's a solid choice. read more

I had the great misfortune of arriving at the Mount Auburn Hospital emergency room on May 9 (2025). The horror of the experience I had there almost defies language. From start to finish, all the personnel, without exception, treated me like an inmate in the basement of some supermax prison who had to be shut up, shut in, and shut down. They showed the most astounding incompetence and medical incaution I have ever seen. I knew it was going to be awful when they got my name and date of birth wrong after I was stretchered in, and they failed repeatedly to change this information when I specifically tried to correct it. Of course, they later accused me of "lying" when the wrong information caused the very problems I told them it would. They did the opposite of what my out-patient provider instructed them to do. They eventually injected me with drugs to which I'm allergic, despite the clear and stern warning my provider made to them in real time (not to mention my own), and that were totally irrelevant to and ineffective for the reason I was in the emergency room. Every time I tried to seek attention and explain my urgent needs, they shooed me away like an animal and, near midnight, called in "security" needlessly to have me violently forced onto the bed, injected with contraindicated drugs, and locked overnight in the room without water and without any means of communication, even though my emergency had not been addressed at all (in fact, their actions, and inactions, had made it vastly more acute). Worst of all, I had Nurse Marianne Bonanno assigned to me, and she behaved towards me, from the first word, with more contempt, rage, and medical disregard than I have ever known from any supposed professional in my life. Right before she had me drugged and locked in the room overnight, she mocked me in front of the other staff, laughed at me, screamed at me, and then snarled, "Unfortunately, we have to deal with you until the morning!" As they forced me onto the bed, they scraped my arm, leaving me bleeding without bandages for many hours. Their thuggish bouncer, technically a "security guard," earlier had decided to snatch away the stool in the room they'd put me in because, in his words, "this ain't no hotel, man." I hadn't even been using it, but by then I'd wanted to and had every right to do so under their own policies and noticed that all the other rooms had stools, some of them in use. He did it purely to intimidate me and to make me less inclined to assert my critical care needs. This place should be investigated and cleaned out. They should assemble and train a new emergency room crew and then disband the current one. I'm utterly appalled by what they did to me. Do everything possible to avoid ending up at Mount Auburn Hospital. read more

Horrible, almost deadly, experience with the Oncology/Hematology Department at Mount Auburn, I would strong urge everyone to seek medical treatment elsewhere rather than take your chances at this hospital. And if you are in need of cancer care/Hematology then definitely avoid this hospital, especially Dr. Prudence Lam. Go a few extra miles down the road to MGH or the Brigham. I arrived at 12 AM give or take for my son (4 years old) with a 104+ fever. I explained he'd been exposed to the flu and pneumonia. After an hour wait I heard people from the lobby complaining about waiting 6 hours. In my hour wait they did not even come check his temperature or vitals but I watched them take vitals of an addict going threw apparent withdrawals shortly after walking in and then called him to be seen before my child and countless other people there before us. In fear of him having a seizure I called Cambridge Hospital Emergency Room and explained to them the situation and they told me to come right over. Where he was seen immediately and cared for. I used to hold Mt Auburn to the highest regards but after tonight the care and prioritization is very questionable. read more

The Mecca of INCOMPETENCE and FRAUD. A brain MRI with contrast was prescribed and their incompetent technician could not inject the dye on FIVE attempts. All these years (17), never had a technician not able to inject the dye on the first attempt. What troubles me is the cover-up, lies and justification that followed. From the prescription did not call for contrast, (then why make five attempts to inject it, to I refused it) to the billing was correct. The latter is because I refused to pay the $650.00 co-pay. I thought their Patient Advocate office would be different, but I was naïve. I forgot their salary is paid by the hospital. They turned out to be more of an advocate for MAH radiology to justify the fraud and incompetence. I guess at the end they are all human. read more

Where do I start? I needed a simple blood test for college registration and I did not have a primary physician in the area so my university referred me to the clinic here. First, it was incredibly difficult to reach anyone by phone to schedule or confirm my appointment (it just rang and rang - no voicemail so I had to keep calling back at off intervals until I reached someone). When I was seen, it was very efficient for the blood draw itself but I had to go back and forth all over the hospital... first to see the physician for an office visit in the clinic where they literally did nothing other than look at the notes that said I needed a blood draw for school. They didn't even take vitals or anything. Just said, ok. You're good to go... now you have to go back to the main registration desk for the hospital to make a same day lab appointment and then go straight back to the lab area for the blood draw. A month later I'm in the middle of an insurance nightmare because Mt. Auburn Hospital submitted the claim as a "non-covered service" even though a basic office visit and lab test are absolutely covered under my plan and they are a preferred provider for my network. The billing department of Mt. Auburn Hospital was SUPER rude and could not care less about attempting to address the issue. DO NOT GO HERE. You will be charged 100% of the cost, which is inflated based on typical insurance reimbursement/coverage. read more

Rude, rude, rude. I wish the EMTs brought my mother to another hospital. The ER nurses and staff couldn't be ruder. I called to check on my mother and her nurse was busy so I asked the nurse who answered the phone and she snapped back, "I don't know, I'm not her nurse, how am I supposed to know.?" Then she hung up on me. The nurses behave as if we are supposed to know how the ER works and we have nerve checking in on our elderly parents. This was not the first time I've been with my mother in the ER, so I have witnessed this behavior before. read more

Waited half hour for my appointment at the Occupational Health Clinic. Staff chatted continuously about their spouses while I was left in the Waiting area with no updates. When I approached the desk to reschedule due to the delay, found myself the target of the physician there. He told me the staff belongs to him. Really, the staff "belongs" to him? I realized that I was seeing an outright display of old fashioned sexism and racism. (The woman at the desk was African American. My daughter is African American. The "ownership" comment really stung.) The clinic needs a business manager to review workflow and patient service. As an LGBTQ woman, I am just not interested in lectures from white male doctors. He said, "haven't you ever been to the doctor before?" Mt. Auburn is completely clueless about customer service. Plenty of other options out there. Avoid Mt. Auburn. read more

If you want to share your X-rays with an outside provider BEWARE. Mt. Auburn hospital is behind the times. You have to FAX your request to the Film Library, and either come in person to get the CD! or have them mail it to your provider. What if you have second and third providers out of network? Same thing. This restrictive and antiquated way of accessing your own X-rays is unfair and creates a hardship for the already-sick or impaired patient, who has to run around trying to find a way to scan the CD into somebody's computer so that she is able to email copies to out of network specialists. Is this Mt. Auburn's way of making it inconvenient for you to use outside providers? The effect it has on me is that I want to use only providers in the MGH Brigham system, since they have no problems sharing images with outside doctors. I just tried to read the CD with a portable reader on my Mac. On Mt. Auburn's disc is says "not compatible with MAC." Thanks again, Mt. Auburn, you really know how to create barriers. read more

Incompetent. Dr. Todd W. Thomsen orders xrays for excruciating knee injury. I cannot walk. He orders ibuprofen but nobody gives it to me. Xrays present no break or fracture. Yet instead of doing the 60 second simple exam to rule out muscular injury he sends me home to wait three more days until I can get an ortho to do the 60-second exam to rule out muscular injury. Whereupon I am told bc of the severe pain and inability to walk it must actually be an "occult" fracture--eg one not seen in Xrays but more present in MRIs. Eight hours later the MRI dept still does not have the MRI order so that they can then submit it to insurance so I can wait up to another week for their auth. They tell me that the ER doc could have ordered the MRI himself, on the spot, and saved me what may be up to 10 days of immobility, pain, potential complications due to other health conditions, and running back and forth to the hospital when I cannot walk. Totally incompetent. Years ago when I was scheduled to meet with a surgeon, the Radiology Dept lost my mammogram. They found it eventually after having misplaced it for a month. And more recently, I scheduled an apt. for a procedure to treat blood cancers. The Department jerked me around for days before telling me that you have to be a Mt. Auburn patient (whatever that means) to be treated there. If that is their policy fine, but state it upfront. That is simply not the way you treat someone with cancer. When I called another hospital, they they made it so easy. Shame on you Mt. Auburn!! Never again. read more

And yes, this review does contain "new experience" I have to leave one here to counter absolutely ridiculous and underserved slander of a really good hospital and awesome staff. Kat V., I am looking at you! Not only my baby was delivered at Mt. Auburn, but these people got me out of really bad pneumonia. And the specialist I came to see here are phenomenal doctors. Mt. Auburn is by far the best hospital in the area. Unlike several other famous hospitals, it is not a baby factory or silo for the sick. Staff cares about every person, they listen, they take care of you, and they do damn good job. And yes, I was in their ER, and these people deserve damn medals for how they handled probably the busiest it has ever been there. Don't like that parking costs - taking public transport! Go ahead, go park at Children's, MGH, or other hospitals and see how much you will pay there. Layout of the hospital confusing - it is a HOSPITAL! There are no hospitals with layout that make sense for non-doctors. Get over it! Staff will be more than happy to escort you anywhere. So stop your whining. read more

I used Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge many times from the late 1980's till 2013. (Unfortunately this review posted to the Allston site.) This includes day surgery, a fractured femur, a few tests including blood tests, bone density, probably a mammogram, a few ER visits, doctor appointments in their facility, physical therapy for my feet, I had a primary care doctor there who isn't there anymore, and...let's see what else....various tests and xrays. Pros: The doctors I saw there on an outpatient level were very good. I saw an ear, nose, and throat specialist in 2011 who had the best bedside manner of almost any doctor I've ever seen. My first physical therapy experience there worked out fine and the foot problems I was having never returned, probably this was around 1991. The PCP I saw there was good too, but she's not there anymore. The blood lab people did their job fine. I had my tubes tied at Mount Auburn in 1995 and this went okay, too. I was given clear instructions before and after the surgery. There were no unexpected complications nor infection nor pain. I was back at work in a week. Cons' The ER. I don't remember ever having a positive experience in this ER. Once I was misdiagnosed with the common cold when what I was suffering from was a post-trauma reaction to having been assaulted. Another time I went there and was diagnosed with "anxiety," was told I had had a panic attack and that explained why I felt faint. I left there wondering if I was going to drop dead that night because this was NOT the problem. Another time I had cardiac symptoms and as I was wheeled in, the nurse said, "Oh, anxiety," and they wheeled me into a dark, empty psych room. I waited there alone for the first ten minutes with no call bell and no one even took my vitals. Okay.... Inpatient: I was sent there mid-August, via ambulance. From that very moment, everything that happened was all wrong. I was not informed fully about my condition. This was COVERUP. I was on Needham 4. The unit was so noisy due to the deafening sound of call bells ringing day and night and loudspeaker noise that the nurses had to shout to hear each other and the doctors couldn't stand it. We patients had to live with it 24/7. The doctor called me a liar and verbally abused me many times. A few personnel also physically abused me (shoving) and poked fun of me. They insisted on having male staff in my room when their raggedy johnies barely covered my body. Many personnel stared rudely, made rude comments, or grabbed the remote from me or the phone so they could use it themselves. The nurses would come in, ask a question, then leave when I was still mid-sentence. They spoke of other patients right in front of me, saying that those patients were a pain in the butt. I even heard them talking about me. Not nice stuff. Finally, I asked to leave, and the doctor in charge of my case said the following: "I'd let you go but if I were to do so and something terrible happened to you, it would be on me. Do you understand? I've got my reputation to worry about." I then knew these personnel thought of me as subhuman. Yes, not even human. They made medication errors. This was in part due to a name mixup. Also, someone there (I don't know who) ordered an illegal search of my apartment. I only knew this upon my arrival home when I saw the place torn apart. I don't know who did the search. I was also given a drug I had not taken in three years, and if I had actually swallowed this ridiculous dose of pills I would have died. I was terrified. They tried to give me drugs I'd had bad reactions to in the past. They took me off high doses of two anticonvulsants (one I had been taking for months, the other a number of years) cold turkey. They threatened me constantly, called me names, spoke of me like I wasn't there, and treated me like a three-year-old. They tried to transfer me to a psych unit , repeating over and over that I was a danger to myself. I knew I wasn't. They refused to believe me. They tried to force drug me. Finally, an outside agency said I didn't qualify for any psych unit because I wasn't a danger to myself. Guess what? They had no choice, they finally let me go. I came home and found the wreckage in my apartment. I was shocked. I was further shocked when I opened the paperwork someone had given me by accident and found out that I'd gone into full code in the ER and they never even told me. Afterward, my life was hell. I suffer from PTSD from the abuse to this day. I tried to get a lawyer to sue the place but I have no money. I cried every day for months, saying "Why did they abuse me?" I was alone with no one to answer my cries. I was scared of the sound of sirens, ambulances, police, anything resembling a doctor. Do these people realize that they did? Do they even realize the consequences of their actions? They got off scot free. As for me, I lived in terror till I moved out of town. Far away where they can no longer harm m read more

Traumatizing experience getting an arthrogram/MRI here. Obviously inexperienced "resident" doctors with minimal supervision. I reported my experience to the board of health and actually received a somewhat threatening letter from the so called "supervising doctor." I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy. read more

I went to the walk in clinic due to sprained back problem, and all I need is a referral to a chiropractor or physiotherapist as this has been the requirement of my insurance for reimbursement (I am travelling from outside US). The nurse said that the clinic does not offer referral forms but said that the doctor would write a letter certifying my condition, but the doctor just kept rejecting saying they don't do referrals at all. This is specifically written for the walk-in clinic. I called to ask about having a prescription written for me over the phone for a minor ear infection before I left for a trip out of the country because I only had a few hours until my flight departed. Not only was the nurse completely rude to me but she actually hung up on me when I asked her for advice on what to do when she said a doctor would not write a prescription over the phone. I can completely understand that a doctor would not be willing to do this but there is absolutely NO NEED to hang up on someone and be rude when explaining that. Unbelievable. read more

If you have an HSA - WATCH OUT!! Mt. Auburn pricing structure seems designed around HMO coverage which means that since the patient is only co-paying they suck up as much money as it can and send the provider thousands in bills. If you have an HSA you end up paying for it yourself & there is not much you can do. I brought my daughter in & they said they could not help her. They sent her to children's hospital. The bills from Children's were ONE THIRD the cost of Mt Auburn where we got no care! read more

I first went to the walk-in clinic because I didn't want to have to pay the high emergency room co-pay. I saw the intake nurse within 15 minutes of sitting down and she then referred me to the ER because of the pain I was having. The ER was great. It was a Thursday after work and they were so quick. I waited again for only 10-15 minutes before they called me back. Everyone was very friendly and in a good mood. It was a pleasant time and I was out in about 2 hours. I give them 4 stars because they said, (mostly in their words) "All the tests point to this one infection except for one thing. We're going to treat you for the infection; check up with your doctor once the antibiotics are done." It all turned out alright though. read more

This response is for the Prevention Center in the Clark Building. This building is meant to specialize in people with mental disorders that need psychiatry and consoling and for those that need to take drug/alcohol/gambling classes. I have recently needed the services of this clinic so I am able to take DUI classes. As this is my first offense I am brand new to these classes and this set up. Before I even made arrangements for my first appointment, every time I have called I have spoken to the rudest receptionists and staff that I have ever spoken with. All of the receptionists have this "your bothering me by asking me so many questions" attitude when I have called with simple questions and just basic information I needed. When I made my initial appointment, I sat down and met with someone to sign up for classes, she didn't smile, didn't say anything to me except to "read and sign". I read and signed everything she asked me to and although I wasn't the most pleasant I beat her attitude by FAR. I then had an intake appointment with an intake consoler who was not the best to deal with and not the worst. I also met with the class instructor and she was the ONLY one there who smiled and had anything positive to say. In order to get anywhere in this office you have to break down and cry when they talk to you or they won't take you seriously. The intake consoler told me that I refused to sign the rules at the initial appointment and because of that I would be not allowed to attend the class that night and also I would be paying a fee of 82$. I immediately informed her I didn't refuse to sign anything and that I was not told anything of the "rules" for the classes before this meeting. So in my initial appointment the woman I met with didn't give me the paper and then tried to play it off like I was the one being difficult and refusing to sign important paperwork. I then showed up the following week for my first class to be told that the class is now full and I wouldn't be able to go into it. Now because of a DUI I don't drive...clearly, but I was never called or informed that the class was full and I'd have to change it so after trucking over an hour to get there via public transportation, I had to truck it all the way home that night with no classes even started. Unfortunately, I have no other options for these classes anywhere else cause this location is the closest and still extremely out of my way. I would advise anyone to try not to attend this location for any classes they need. Your nothing but an inconvenience to anyone there and everyone there is miserable to deal with. read more

I had good experiences at MAH as an outpatient after surgery, but very mixed during a four day stay after major surgery in early Sept. I think it may be true that whenever you're in any hospital, you need an advocate because you're too weak and drugged up to do it yourself. Some murses were wonderful, most I would say, but the nurses aides were another story. I couldn't move because I was in so much pain. I needed to be turned. This prompted one to prop a pillow under one shoulder, as though that helped. I kept asking for help to get up. Aides would say, we have to ask your nurse, then no one would return. I would buzz and buzz and buzz to no avail. Finally my Dad went to complain, then response was qucik, but there were some mursing staff and aides put out at me the whole rest of my stay because of it. My experience at Beth Israel was far worse - that was outpatient surgery. They didn't eve give me a drink when I woke up after not having liquids for the last 13 hours! I would still recommend MAH, but I think nursing staffs are overworked everywhere, and nurses aides are not always what they ought to be. I agree with the comments below about the food. Excellent! My mom enjoyed eating at MAH so much I think she would regularly if she lived in the area. read more

Do not use ER. Nine hours in ER listening to them crack jokes about me and other patients and at the end asked for my test results so I could bring them to provider as they weren't on my discharge paperwork -- 2am and they told me I have to go to medical records: print off a form, sign it, mail it, and pay a fee to medical records?! Signed up for their online portal but there's no test results posted there -- The attendant PA had excellent people skills but gave me a "guess" rather than a diagnosis that didn't address all symptoms. Saw the doctor for a total of five minutes. Was recommended to go to a gastro but the name of their recommendation is booked for months. The recommended solution on the outtake paperwork was something that was not at all applicable - laughably so. Two rather than one star because nurses and hospital staff very nice. Radiologist tech and triage nurse also excellent. read more

the emergency admitting and the waiting is horrible . we were there today with my father 81 with cancer neeeded to be seen for an infection we were there for 3 hours without being seen , always telling us you will be 3rd or the second then next all this took three hours and we had to walk out because my father was not feeling good and in pain from a tumor in his back from sitting that long it caused him a lot of pain, and you know what they did not give a damm a lot of people that came in after us did not look like an emergency went in before us. unless you are coming with an ambulance is the only way to be seen faster . It was freezing cold every elder person was complaining and asking for blanket in the waiting room. I am so upset that after 3 hours we had to walk out. something hould be done specially for the elders to be seen and be respected. I hope tomorrow I will see a doctors instead and hopefully the infection did not get worse til then. they wil have a lawsuit in their hands read more
