Honestly couldn't have picked a better campground for our stay. We had the most wonderful campground hosts who didn't hesitate to adjust our campsite to one that would better suit our equipment. They were extremely accommodating! And you can't beat the views!

Really nice campground very close to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. We had an ocean (bay) view and it was wonderful. Water and electric hookups were perfect and bathrooms and showered were clean and the water was hot. The campground is on the Island Explorer bus route and it's a perfect way to visit the park or downtown. Would happily stay here again in the future!

Beautiful camp ground with real friendly staff. Ignore the old reviews, this place is not like that. There are a lot of trees and shade but can make parking a challenge. The views are wonderful. Some spots are small, but the harder to get to and smaller spots are great. Bus picks up at the office so you save a fortune on parking.

My boyfriend and I had never been to ME prior to this, so we wanted to do a camping trip close to Acadia. We ran across this spot and thought it looked/sounded great. We reserved 2 nights on an "elevated" tent site. Upon arriving, we were extremely disappointed. Our spot was in between several RVs with no privacy at all. Because the site was elevated, it was on a wooden platform and therefore we had no room to actually tie down our tent. I realized that was my fault and decided to change our site. The next morning, I called in to change the site and the front desk said not a single tent site elsewhere was available. This perplexed me as it was a Wednesday and there appeared to be a ton of empty sites. I decided to stop at the front desk for face to face interaction. The two ladies were a lot more friendly and helpful than my interaction over the phone. They were able to find me a water-front tent site that had just cancelled and just charge me the difference. It was great! When we moved to the campsite, it was indeed better than the elevated site, but quite smaller and didn't have a path to the water like the surrounding sites. It was pretty disappointing for the price, but still better than the original site we had. We had a great time while there- beautiful sight of the water, quiet neighbors, and room for our 2 person tent and campfire. I then noticed in my invoice that when they changed my reservation, it charged me the water front price for both nights, instead of just the one night after we switched. I called the front desk and they fixed it immediately. I was very pleased! All in all, it's about a 15 minute drive from Acadia National Park and the staff is pretty friendly. Just make sure you know which spot you're getting!

We love this campground! The tent sites are well-spaced away from other sites. The facilities are clean and in good repair. The staff is very friendly.

The two staff encounters we had were friendly and the staff had a desire to please. The grounds were pleasant. We visited when there were not a lot of campers and the weather was dry. Two of the four clothes washers were inoperable. We did not use the washrooms or laundromat. Upon arrival we were advised that the recent hurricanes caused water issues, but that the water was tested daily and everything was ok. During our set up process the water that came out of the tap was terrible (see photo). We talked to the office and demanded bottled drinking water and that the poor water quality from the faucet be addressed. After 'checking with management', we were allocated two gallons of bottled water per day. Staff later stopped by in the process of flushing the water lines in our section of the campground and ran the water until it was acceptable (but not totally clear). Our water problem, was reportedly a new problem, not the hurricane problem. Bottom line after reading other reviews, some from a year or two ago, MT DESERT NARROWS CAMPGROUND HAS A DRINKING WATER PROBLEM and apparently, ownership has so far elected not to address the problem with a treatment system. Most frustrating - they were not entirely forthright about the issue.

Tent site

Staff are super friendly. We stayed in the acres camp sites which were under good coverage. The bath house was pretty clean and there were pretty many shower stalls. The bath house was a little far the tent camping though. Some of the streets could be better labeled back in the tending area as well. We were trying to figure out where to go for our tent site. The area is unmarked and you just kind of go where there is a table and fire ring. The bugs are Aw file. Be prepared for that. Its about 20-30 minutes from bar harbor so not too bad but still a drive. Nice spot and decent rates.

Just leaving after a great stay at Mr. Desert Narrows. Our kids really enjoyed the pool, we really enjoyed our walk down to the water. Our RV was unfortunately too big for an ocean view lot but if you fit definitely scoop one up, the view is breathtaking (I'm attaching a view that I took from the back of a vacant lot)! We would gladly stay again!

This was the view out of the window where my bed was :)

We stayed July 4th weekend and when we booked in January this was one of the last tent sites available. Granted it was July 4th, but still something to think about. There are a few lucky tent sites that overlook the water which would be incredible. Maybe next time we can book earlier and snag one. Each site has everything you will need -- a platform for your tent (perfect incase it rains), an electrical outlet, running water, a picnic table and a firepit. It is clean and well-kept, and you are never too far from a bathroom / shower facility. Just note that the shower is $1 for 5 minutes and you'll need quarters. There is a main house where you can buy wood and other supplies. During non-covid times they also have a gathering place where you can buy snacks. I believe the rate is around $50 dollars a night but I'm not sure if the rate changes depending on the weekend, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was higher than normal over July 4th. This is a wonderful campsite and I'd happily return. In comparison, I've also camped at the Oceanside KOA in Bar Harbor and this campsite is way better. Be sure to check it out!

Tried it under new corporate run in 2025 for first time & had to pre-select our site but then with the old system, once you were on your site, it was yours. You pulled in and chose whatever open available site & then went to the office to register. Now you also have to choose ahead of time how many days. With this being said we wanted to stay an extra night. But, now we had to pack everything up & move the RV to another site (of their choice) for just 1 extra night because someone was coming in for the site we were already on for the past 5 days,... (that they also were forced to choose ahead of time). ‍ The old original system worked beautifully! Do not like the new requirements or the new jacked up prices. Miss the Robbin's family owning & running the CG.

It was a last minute booking and the campgrounds in Acadia were all booked out for the nights I wanted. Happened to find this spot, and it was a great decision. The bathrooms are very very clean. They have hot and cold water sinks, paper towels, flush toilets, and outlets. They are individual rooms. There is also wifi in some spots of the campground, there is laundry available. I didn't shower at this campground, but there are also quarter operated showers. I think it 50 cents for 7 mins. I could be wrong though. There water spots where you can wash your dishes too. They ask you don't do it in the bathroom. The camp store/ front office also seemed to have a lot of amenities too and they do sell ice if you need it. There is also a free bus that picks up at the campground and goes to Acadia and also Bar Harbor. Parking can be kind of tough at Acadia and Bar Harbor (more so Bar Harbor then Acadia), so it's a good option. The only downside is the tent campsites felt awfully close to each other. Plenty of shade in the tent campsites, but not a lot of privacy besides behind your car which you'll park in front of your tent campsite. I would definitely stay here again purely because the bathrooms were so clean and felt new.

For years my wife has wanted to stay at this campground and when we finally made it happen it was such a disappointment. We booked our stay in March 2025, and reserved an ocean front back in site water electric. We arrive and they have is in a pull through across from the Ocean Front site we booked water and electric. My wife called the office to see if a mistake was make and Brenda at the office implied that my wife had no idea what she had reserved even though we had an email confirmation showing we had reserved an ocean front site. Brenda then completely dismissed my wife saying well we don't have any available anyway. There was no attempt to make this right whatsoever. We understand booking issues arise but for no communication prior to our arrival of the change was frustrating especially since we would have chosen a full hookup site had we been informed of the unavailability of an ocean front site. Our site was incredibly unleveled causing us to be unable to use the main entrance to our camper requiring our guests to walk through our bedroom to gain access to the bathroom and living room of our camper. We had emailed the campground about the experience as their handout requested to contact them before writing a bad review. Well it's over two weeks later and no one has responded to my wife's email. I would strongly recommend you skip this KOA they certainly do not care about your experience just your money!

Folks, I don't really know what to say other than 'you just gotta come here!'…read moreI love this place! I came through on a hum last year, stayed for 2 nights and 3 days. Told Shirley (the owner) I would be back "next year" to help out, and here I am, Aug. 8th, 2019, sad to leave after spending 4 weeks in the grand teepee, helping out around the camp. Off route 1, into the woods, to grandmama's RV we go! But it is so much more... tent sites, group sites, great trails, and great vibe from the surrounding community. But what you really want to know is; this is a great base for exploring coastal Maine & Downeast. Now understand 2 things... Downeast is on the coast, but when the term 'downeast' is used, it is very much a reference to the culture of the folk who grew up and live here and have also known it through the generations of their family. Once you get here, you're in the thick of what "coastal Maine" really is without the crowds of Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, etc.. from Cottonwood you will find within 20 mins. Never crowded beaches with all the beauty of those other places... and you can also make a day trip of getting to Easport or Calaise and just breath in New Brunswick! Oh yeah, bring your passport... One of the other things I love about camping here, are the various small sites that are suitable for bicyclers and bikers who travel with minimal gear and need to stop for short stays. Even though its right off the road, once in, you're cast into the woods! Oh yeah, and I can't think of another camp with such a great bath house along this route... Cottonwood Camping is truly a great experience and my pick as a base for exploring Downeast, Coastal Maine, the far north on the east side of the U.S. Shirley Cotton makes it happen! She is the BOMB!!

I can honestly say this place was easy to find and very photogenic. Easy to recommend.read more

Reserving this campground is tricky. In fact, it's a good idea to check online which spots might potentially be available a few days before you actually book. If you make a mistake while reserving, may the good Lord have mercy on you because corrections are more difficult than the reservation itself. Camping in Blackwoods is pleasant, clean, spacious, has respectful guests, and plenty of trees to tie up a canopy to protect from the sudden rain showers. With much to like, there's quite a bit of inconvenience. Having no showers on the premises is my biggest gripe. After hiking for most of the day, there's no getting around needing a shower. If you drive (that's right, drive) down the road a little ways outside the campground, there's a place that sells showers for $3 in quarters (that's 12 quarters) for 4 minutes. Apparently, you can obtain 12 quarters with a credit card, but reviewers warned that sometimes the machine is out of order so BYOQ. While Blackwoods asks that you only bring local wood for campfires (within a 50 mile radius), our party found the local firewood (which can be purchased at the shower place or across the street from the shower place) too wet from the frequent showers. Thus, making a campfire was challenging and frustrating even for our resident Eagle Scout. Undeniably, the restrooms are clean, but I found myself without toilet paper in some of the stalls. Luckily, a friend was able to hand me some TP. Speaking of paper, there are no hand towels or soap in the bathroom; however, I did see one outlet in the bathroom that some were using to charge their phones. Another inconvenience is that there is no dishwash station. In fact, not only do you wash your dishes at your camping site by walking to the spigot to get water (make your own hot water), but you have to walk to a different and farther station to dump your dishwater out so as to not clog the pipes with food. When it comes to dishwashing, there's a lot of walking back and forth. Get your 2 buckets. Get some water for washing and another for rinsing. Walk back to camp site. Heat up the water. Wash your dishes. Rinse your dishes. Walk to wash water disposal. Walk back to camp site. For entertainment, the amphitheater had nightly presentations. On one occasion, we attended one on animals in the park, but at the first sound of thunder, the ranger called it and we all had to go back to our camp sites. Surprisingly, our campground and Acadia NP in general was bereft of animals. Living in the suburbs of CA, one can see more wildlife than in Acadia NP. Before arriving at the NP, I had full intentions of using the free shuttles, but the shuttle schedules and transfers could cost you hours of time so we opted to drive our own car and brave the limited parking. Camping successfully at Blackwoods requires grit and determination. If you got it, go for it.

Acadia National Park is one of those places that genuinely lives up to everything said about it,…read moreand it stands apart from the big western parks in a way that makes it its own distinct experience. I found the combination of rocky coastline, dense evergreen forests, and mountain summits accessible within a relatively compact area meant there was always something worth stopping for. The scenery shifted constantly as I moved through the park, and keeping a camera within reach at all times was not an exaggeration. Cadillac Mountain is the natural anchor of my visit. The drive to the summit is worth doing on its own, but I chose to hike the Gorge Trail leading up to it on foot. It was a serious undertaking that included real rock climbing sections and rewarded me with views that felt genuinely earned. I budgeted a full half day for the hike rather than driving. The summit itself has a gift shop, and the views from the top looked out in every direction with nothing obstructing them. A reservation for the Cadillac summit road costs a few dollars and needs to be booked online in advance, so I handled that before I arrived. The Beehive Trail is another strong option for hikers who want something with more exposure and elevation gain than a standard walk. I also built Sand Beach and Thunder Hole into my loop drive, and the carriage roads offered a different pace entirely, peaceful and scenic with no vehicle traffic to contend with, making them ideal for biking if I had access to wheels. Parking was a genuine challenge during peak season and on weekends in particular. Arriving early in the morning was the only reliable way to secure a spot at the popular stops without waiting an hour or more. A late fall visit would hit a sweet spot where crowds thin out considerably, the air is crisp, and the park takes on a quieter quality that peak season cannot offer. I made sure to buy my park pass at the visitor center and did my research on seasonal hours before I went, as services and shuttles wind down toward the end of October.
