When I asked why they didn't announce themselves they got offended and gave me a really hard time, getting very upset with me, even after simply explaining why I was uncomfortable. This happened 2 different nights. After this they then called my wife while we were on a hike very upset with me for questioning why their staff members came into out site 2 different nights unannounced. I thought, in reality, if I pay $500 for a few nights in the woods I had the right, as a customer, to ask simply why they kept coming into my campsite; but apparently I was wrong when it came to this campground. If you like paying tons of money for campsites to have staff come into your site to bother you in the late hours of the night this is the campground for you.

The Bar Harbor Islander bus picks up right out front and takes you all over the island. On the backside of the property over by the pool, there are trails to walk your dog on and blueberry bushes that are chalk full of blueberries. We picked a few and ate them. It's way way way to overpriced isn't child friendly with only one playground that's not that nice. The maintenance staff is very nice and help in anyway. Not to mention Bar Harbor itself although beautiful downtown restaurants food is awful and with only t-shirt shops or ice cream stores so if you're looking for some shopping you'll only get t-shirts. So all and all I'd skip Bar Harbor and go to Candem Maine but if you go definitely ski the KOA.

For years my wife has wanted to stay at this campground and when we finally made it happen it was such a disappointment. We booked our stay in March 2025, and reserved an ocean front back in site water electric. We arrive and they have is in a pull through across from the Ocean Front site we booked water and electric. My wife called the office to see if a mistake was make and Brenda at the office implied that my wife had no idea what she had reserved even though we had an email confirmation showing we had reserved an ocean front site. Brenda then completely dismissed my wife saying well we don't have any available anyway. There was no attempt to make this right whatsoever. We understand booking issues arise but for no communication prior to our arrival of the change was frustrating especially since we would have chosen a full hookup site had we been informed of the unavailability of an ocean front site. Our site was incredibly unleveled causing us to be unable to use the main entrance to our camper requiring our guests to walk through our bedroom to gain access to the bathroom and living room of our camper. We had emailed the campground about the experience as their handout requested to contact them before writing a bad review. Well it's over two weeks later and no one has responded to my wife's email. I would strongly recommend you skip this KOA they certainly do not care about your experience just your money!

Told Shirley (the owner) I would be back "next year" to help out, and here I am, Aug. 8th, 2019, sad to leave after spending 4 weeks in the grand teepee, helping out around the camp. Off route 1, into the woods, to grandmama's RV we go! But it is so much more... tent sites, group sites, great trails, and great vibe from the surrounding community. But what you really want to know is; this is a great base for exploring coastal Maine & Downeast. Now understand 2 things... Downeast is on the coast, but when the term 'downeast' is used, it is very much a reference to the culture of the folk who grew up and live here and have also known it through the generations of their family. Once you get here, you're in the thick of what "coastal Maine" really is without the crowds of Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, etc.. from Cottonwood you will find within 20 mins. Never crowded beaches with all the beauty of those other places... and you can also make a day trip of getting to Easport or Calaise and just breath in New Brunswick! Oh yeah, bring your passport... One of the other things I love about camping here, are the various small sites that are suitable for bicyclers and bikers who travel with minimal gear and need to stop for short stays. Even though its right off the road, once in, you're cast into the woods! Oh yeah, and I can't think of another camp with such a great bath house along this route... Cottonwood Camping is truly a great experience and my pick as a base for exploring Downeast, Coastal Maine, the far north on the east side of the U.S. Shirley Cotton makes it happen! She is the BOMB!!

Reserving this campground is tricky. Exactly 60 days in advance of your desired trip, you must be…read moreon recreation.gov at 6am (if you're in CA) and have in mind a handful of spots that you'd like to park your tent. In fact, it's a good idea to check online which spots might potentially be available a few days before you actually book. If you make a mistake while reserving, may the good Lord have mercy on you because corrections are more difficult than the reservation itself. Camping in Blackwoods is pleasant, clean, spacious, has respectful guests, and plenty of trees to tie up a canopy to protect from the sudden rain showers. With much to like, there's quite a bit of inconvenience. Having no showers on the premises is my biggest gripe. After hiking for most of the day, there's no getting around needing a shower. If you drive (that's right, drive) down the road a little ways outside the campground, there's a place that sells showers for $3 in quarters (that's 12 quarters) for 4 minutes. Apparently, you can obtain 12 quarters with a credit card, but reviewers warned that sometimes the machine is out of order so BYOQ. While Blackwoods asks that you only bring local wood for campfires (within a 50 mile radius), our party found the local firewood (which can be purchased at the shower place or across the street from the shower place) too wet from the frequent showers. Thus, making a campfire was challenging and frustrating even for our resident Eagle Scout. Undeniably, the restrooms are clean, but I found myself without toilet paper in some of the stalls. Luckily, a friend was able to hand me some TP. Speaking of paper, there are no hand towels or soap in the bathroom; however, I did see one outlet in the bathroom that some were using to charge their phones. Another inconvenience is that there is no dishwash station. In fact, not only do you wash your dishes at your camping site by walking to the spigot to get water (make your own hot water), but you have to walk to a different and farther station to dump your dishwater out so as to not clog the pipes with food. When it comes to dishwashing, there's a lot of walking back and forth. Get your 2 buckets. Get some water for washing and another for rinsing. Walk back to camp site. Heat up the water. Wash your dishes. Rinse your dishes. Walk to wash water disposal. Walk back to camp site. For entertainment, the amphitheater had nightly presentations. On one occasion, we attended one on animals in the park, but at the first sound of thunder, the ranger called it and we all had to go back to our camp sites. Surprisingly, our campground and Acadia NP in general was bereft of animals. Living in the suburbs of CA, one can see more wildlife than in Acadia NP. Before arriving at the NP, I had full intentions of using the free shuttles, but the shuttle schedules and transfers could cost you hours of time so we opted to drive our own car and brave the limited parking. Camping successfully at Blackwoods requires grit and determination. If you got it, go for it.

I could hear multiple crying children in the distance over the low volume of my tv but the staff didn't knock on their camper doors and tell them no crying after 10pm. Apparently adults can't be respectful adults and enjoy themselves for an hour when their kids go to bed. Will never come back to this place.

I'm no stranger to parks and beautiful natural places, but Acadia is like a dreamscape. There's…read morestunning ocean views from crumbling gorgeous cliff sides. There are lakes, streams, ponds, scenic lighthouses, boats, bikes, trails, gardens, crazy hikes with vertical iron rungs, rolling forest hikes, lighthouses, and more! The main issue you'll run into is crowds.. lots of people want to come here, especially in July and August. Best thing to do, go in as early as possible, do some things, take a break, go back again after 3. If you're early, you can get a parking spot then work from there. If you are flexible on time, take advantage of the shuttles, but be warned, they may be full, and they don't run every 10-15 minutes, so plan accordingly. I would be in the park by 7, have plans maybe on a tour in Bar Harbor late morning or early afternoon, then head back after 4, and I got to all the must-do's, ie hiked the Beehive, the Bubbles, Cadillac Mountain sunrise and sunset (reserve this early as spots sell out, I booked mine 3 months in advance the minute they released and they were sold out shortly later, especially sunrise tickets), Jordan Pond and popovers, Bass Harbor Lighthouse, as well as some boat tours in the area, including very successful whale and puffin watching. For more hints and tips, I watched some YouTube videos, there's great info out there, especially the videos from Ash, a former park ranger, who has loads of helpful tips to get around and not spend your trip sitting in traffic or waiting in a parking spot.

We had accidentally had 2 types of RVs listed under our reservation and so we were originally assigned a pull in site. We actually have a 40 ft Fifth wheel toy hauler so they easily made and adjustment and gave us a back-in WF site! We stayed here for the past 3 weeks and it has been great! We have nice shade trees, easy to access the dump station and bathhouse. The park is clean and everyone is so nice here! Great stay and only 7.5 miles from Acadia and tons of yummy food!!! Great location!!! Would definitely stay here again!!!
