For years my wife has wanted to stay at this campground and when we finally made it happen it was such a disappointment. We booked our stay in March 2025, and reserved an ocean front back in site water electric. We arrive and they have is in a pull through across from the Ocean Front site we booked water and electric. My wife called the office to see if a mistake was make and Brenda at the office implied that my wife had no idea what she had reserved even though we had an email confirmation showing we had reserved an ocean front site. Brenda then completely dismissed my wife saying well we don't have any available anyway. There was no attempt to make this right whatsoever. We understand booking issues arise but for no communication prior to our arrival of the change was frustrating especially since we would have chosen a full hookup site had we been informed of the unavailability of an ocean front site. Our site was incredibly unleveled causing us to be unable to use the main entrance to our camper requiring our guests to walk through our bedroom to gain access to the bathroom and living room of our camper. We had emailed the campground about the experience as their handout requested to contact them before writing a bad review. Well it's over two weeks later and no one has responded to my wife's email. I would strongly recommend you skip this KOA they certainly do not care about your experience just your money!

I grew up at this CG then took my family. After the Robbin's sold out to "corporate run" ,…read morerequiring reservations instead of "first come first served", (& the CG was always filled peak season!), it is not the same. Tried it under new corporate run in 2025 for first time & had to pre-select our site but then with the old system, once you were on your site, it was yours. You pulled in and chose whatever open available site & then went to the office to register. Now you also have to choose ahead of time how many days. With this being said we wanted to stay an extra night. But, now we had to pack everything up & move the RV to another site (of their choice) for just 1 extra night because someone was coming in for the site we were already on for the past 5 days,... (that they also were forced to choose ahead of time). ‍ The old original system worked beautifully! Do not like the new requirements or the new jacked up prices. Miss the Robbin's family owning & running the CG.

It was a last minute booking and the campgrounds in Acadia were all booked out for the nights I wanted. Happened to find this spot, and it was a great decision. The bathrooms are very very clean. They have hot and cold water sinks, paper towels, flush toilets, and outlets. They are individual rooms. There is also wifi in some spots of the campground, there is laundry available. I didn't shower at this campground, but there are also quarter operated showers. I think it 50 cents for 7 mins. I could be wrong though. There water spots where you can wash your dishes too. They ask you don't do it in the bathroom. The camp store/ front office also seemed to have a lot of amenities too and they do sell ice if you need it. There is also a free bus that picks up at the campground and goes to Acadia and also Bar Harbor. Parking can be kind of tough at Acadia and Bar Harbor (more so Bar Harbor then Acadia), so it's a good option. The only downside is the tent campsites felt awfully close to each other. Plenty of shade in the tent campsites, but not a lot of privacy besides behind your car which you'll park in front of your tent campsite. I would definitely stay here again purely because the bathrooms were so clean and felt new.

My kids loved the pool which proved to be stiff competition to all the hiking and site seeing in Acadia. Smuggler's is very dog friendly to those dogs on a leash. They give you lobster, pot, salt, shell crackers and plenty of advice if you've never cooked a lobster before. You just need your own butter. All for $7 a pound! (August 2018) In all a really great place to make memories. As I write this, I think they're even having some sort of entertainment tonight with hot dogs and music. I can hear some trumpet player warming up! Very cool. We'll be back here for sure!

Bad Experience: Prior to booking our reservation, we called and spoke with someone about our specific gear needs and they recommended a few sites that we should request in order to fit and feel comfortable. While there was an additional fee to reserve a specific site, we were told to book online and enter the range of sites we preferred and one of those would be reserved. You can imagine our frustration and panic when we arrived to what I would call one of the smallest tent sites in the campground - one that wouldn't fit our 6 person tent, let alone our second tent, our screen house, and leave space for a car. We expressed our frustration with the woman at the counter who apologized for the misinformation we were given. She then explained that for an additional charge, we could upgrade to an RV site because all of the large tent sites were reserved. Mind you, we just drove 2.5 hours and it's now dinner time so driving back home wasn't quite an option. I was not impressed to find out that as a result of one of their employees providing us misinformation, we could pay even more for a larger site. I would have just paid the small fee to book a specific site had I been told this was going to happen to us. People make mistakes, that's understandable - though it's frustrating to leave us in a position to be forced to pay more as a result. After further negotiations, the woman at the counter did upgrade us and provided us a small discount - resulting in us paying an additional $15 above the original reservation. Note: this experience won't prevent us from visiting again in the future. We've just learned that we are better off booking over the phone and paying the fee to reserve a specific site. The Good: - the campground and facilities are clean and well kept - the staff are friendly - the pool is nice, clean, and kept at a nice warm temp on cooler days - the campground offers fun activities to entertain families - the Island Explorer is a free shuttle bus that will bring you into town so you don't have to compete for parking - it's located about 20 minutes from Acadia NP and from Bar Harbor with plenty of stores in either direction for all of your forgotten items

But on the other hand there is typically always a wait because in Bathroom area only has 8 and if people aren't going in with there significant others it fills up fast. There is also free WiFi which is nice. The amenities were great The camping site was extremely small. We could barely fit our small 3 person tent. The fire ring was only steps from the area we could put the tent. And then there was the opening to the field that we could see other tents as well as the play area for people. It was hard to get any privacy, I could clearly hear my neighbor tenters, and we didn't have many trees so it made it hard to hang things. We made the most of our site but the next morning when our neighbors left we asked if we could switch to that site because it was more secluded and they wouldn't let us which was a little disappointing. The pool was closed the whole time for some reason (I didn't know why). The place is pretty nice, the people are nice, but I was hoping for a better site. I am used to camping deep in the woods so this is just a personal opinion but I prefer more privacy but I didn't know!

Summary: we will not be staying at this campground again, nor will the friends we were camping…read morewith, and we will be recommending AGAINST this place to anyone that's interested or that we think might be interested in traveling to this fantastic part of the country. Mirroring comments from other users, we were packed in to campsites barely wider than our rigs with awning nearly touching the rig in the next site. We also really enjoyed tripping over the neighbors sewer connection - as an added benefit. There are ZERO activities, nothing for kids - this is the first campground I've been to that has no playground. Nothing. That might be intentional based on the staff interactions - my take is that they are not kid people. Or people people, in some cases. The pool was OK, but we were concerned about the contradicting pool rules that were posted so were quite on edge. As other commenters have stated, the staff seem to arbitrarily enforce non-existent or non-posted rules. We were harassed by one staff member for driving near an area that was posted 'No Parking'. I spent some time with that person trying to understand the connection but gave up. Note that vehicles were accessing this area during our entire stay. This resulted in a smug manager visiting our site - and under implied threat of getting kicked out, we offered an apology for the interaction. If we had been camping alone, I would have left that moment and enjoyed one of the many other campgrounds in the area. This was an absolutely HORRIBLE experience that we will not experience again. At least they made some effort to change their signage while we were there, I assume, as a result of our wonderful interaction, but it's still unclear and does not convey their ambiguous intention. Or maybe that's what they intend. Oh, and the dog park - here's another Narrows too rule - dogs MUST be restrained on a 6' leash while in the dog park. Despite the absolutely beautiful surroundings, this site is a NO GO for us. We chose this place because it was the cheapest. Don't do it. Advise against it. Spend another $20/day elsewhere and you will likely get some positive customer service, among other standard campground amenities. Thank you.

Our neighbors hook ups were literally under our awning. I tripped over them and the black rubber pieces that lay under the very sparse gravel constantly. Literally fell down on both knees tripping over this black rubber and going home with bruises. The site we were on, although the view was pretty if you looked straight ahead, was so tight that we couldn't use our awnings and one poor couple couldn't even extend all of their slides. For 4 nights we had a couple next door whose dog barked and wailed every night while they were out. There was no cable hook up at all although we paid for it, the internet was completely unreliable and often non existent, the laundry was filthy as were the bathrooms and the pool fencing in very poor condition. This is by no means a camping resort, it's a campground that I would describe as bare bones. Of all the "social events" they listed such as lobster bakes and ice cream socials etc....... None ever happened. For $150.00 a night? Definitely not worth it. They did refund one nights stay after we complained. But if I'm honest I'd say the sites are worth maybe half of that. Unfortunately, what we thought was our go to place in Bar Harbor has become our where not to go place. We will not return. And according to several of our fellow campers, neither will they.

Folks, I don't really know what to say other than 'you just gotta come here!'…read moreI love this place! I came through on a hum last year, stayed for 2 nights and 3 days. Told Shirley (the owner) I would be back "next year" to help out, and here I am, Aug. 8th, 2019, sad to leave after spending 4 weeks in the grand teepee, helping out around the camp. Off route 1, into the woods, to grandmama's RV we go! But it is so much more... tent sites, group sites, great trails, and great vibe from the surrounding community. But what you really want to know is; this is a great base for exploring coastal Maine & Downeast. Now understand 2 things... Downeast is on the coast, but when the term 'downeast' is used, it is very much a reference to the culture of the folk who grew up and live here and have also known it through the generations of their family. Once you get here, you're in the thick of what "coastal Maine" really is without the crowds of Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, etc.. from Cottonwood you will find within 20 mins. Never crowded beaches with all the beauty of those other places... and you can also make a day trip of getting to Easport or Calaise and just breath in New Brunswick! Oh yeah, bring your passport... One of the other things I love about camping here, are the various small sites that are suitable for bicyclers and bikers who travel with minimal gear and need to stop for short stays. Even though its right off the road, once in, you're cast into the woods! Oh yeah, and I can't think of another camp with such a great bath house along this route... Cottonwood Camping is truly a great experience and my pick as a base for exploring Downeast, Coastal Maine, the far north on the east side of the U.S. Shirley Cotton makes it happen! She is the BOMB!!

I can honestly say this place was easy to find and very photogenic. Easy to recommend.read more

We stayed July 4th weekend and when we booked in January this was one of the last tent sites available. Granted it was July 4th, but still something to think about. There are a few lucky tent sites that overlook the water which would be incredible. Maybe next time we can book earlier and snag one. Each site has everything you will need -- a platform for your tent (perfect incase it rains), an electrical outlet, running water, a picnic table and a firepit. It is clean and well-kept, and you are never too far from a bathroom / shower facility. Just note that the shower is $1 for 5 minutes and you'll need quarters. There is a main house where you can buy wood and other supplies. During non-covid times they also have a gathering place where you can buy snacks. I believe the rate is around $50 dollars a night but I'm not sure if the rate changes depending on the weekend, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was higher than normal over July 4th. This is a wonderful campsite and I'd happily return. In comparison, I've also camped at the Oceanside KOA in Bar Harbor and this campsite is way better. Be sure to check it out!
