The oldest working hatchery west of the Mississippi! There's a private lot with public restrooms. The museum near the entrance is only open on weekends so be aware of that. You can also feed the fish (not an option for us because when we came on Christmas Eve it was all locked up).

I spent the best summer of my life working as a wrangler/horse trainer at Coffee Creek Ranch and…read morewas also lucky enough to come back as a paying guest twice since! It is one of the only authentic guest ranches on the West Coast (I have worked at others since that claimed 5 stars and never once had as much fun as I did at CCR). The trails and mountains are beautiful, the horses well behaved and healthy, the food is AMAZING, and the cabins are adorable! I was even able to be there recently for the Thanksgiving holiday to reunite with or meet just about every member of the Hartman family! It was pretty incredible to get to enjoy the ranch and the gorgeous Trinity Alps in the winter for the first time too. I cannot even believe some of these scathing reviews I just read! I can understand frustration if you feel like your expectations weren't met in a situation where you paid money, but this particular experience was such an isolated one that it simply doesn't speak for the ranch/accommodations/etc. quality as a whole. Coffee Creek Ranch is a family-owned, family-friendly mountain resort where people go to get away from the chaos of their daily lives and spend a few days (at least) and try out some of the many unique activities offered. It's not a place to travel all the way too if you are going to rush or try to fit too much into only a few hours. In the entire time I worked there I don't remember seeing one guests leave dissatisfied - except perhaps if they didn't catch a fish, or over-slept for the Breakfast Ride, or ran out of time to do karaoke on their last night or something like that! I just reached out to Ruth again last week to schedule a romantic weekend getaway for myself and my boyfriend in May and I absolutely can't wait!!

Just got back from an incredible fishing trip with guide Jack Trout on the Upper Sacramento River,…read moreand I can't say enough good things about the experience. I brought my 8-year-old son Brandon along for his first real fly fishing adventure, and Jack made it a day we'll both remember forever. From the moment we hit the water, Jack was patient, knowledgeable, and great with my son. The float down the river was absolutely stunning, and the fishing action was steady throughout the day. Jack knew exactly where to go, and we hooked into some beautiful rainbows... 12 strikes and 9 landed, some north of 18 inches. Jack grilled up a hot ribeye steak lunch riverside--seriously next level. It felt more like a gourmet adventure than a fishing trip at times. Spotting wildlife along the river including deer and a bald eagle as we tackled the mild rapids was awesome! I've fished this river from the banks for years, but the float trip really gets you to locations that you can't otherwise access. If you're looking for an experienced, fun, and family-friendly guide on the Upper Sac, Jack Trout is your guy. We'll be back for sure.

My cousin and I found the honey hole on the Sacramento Point that Bob told us about. We slayed them just like he told us we would. Trolling for trout has never been so much fun for me or my cousin. We know how to use our down riggers. We know how to set up the lines. We didn't know where the fish were. That was until we met Bob Telles of The Reel Thing. I came across The Reel Thing July 27, 2016. My cousin and I had just pulled the boat up into the shade so we could start prepping it for the week ahead of fishing. Shortly after we began our setup a gentleman came down the hill in a golf cart. He circled around the boat and asked, "Are you guys going to be here long?" We replied with a friendly no. The next thing you know this gentleman introduced himself as Bob and began telling us about the fish. Bob gave my cousin and I so much detailed information our brains almost exploded. Bob then let it be known he is a guide on Shasta and has many years on Shasta and other lakes. Bob's friendly demeanor and willingness to provide so much information to non paying people was so amazing. He was not trying to sell us a guided trip. He didn't tell us to get off his lake. He told us that he loves giving out the information because it is what he loves to do. Put people on the fish! Bob Telles put us on the fish alright. So if you want to avoid slathering sunscreen on, the best bet is lightweight, light colored clothes that have some kind of built in SPF. Our fishing guide, who deserves his own non-5 star review (unless you count amount of marijuana smoked while supposedly working), recommended this place as I was suffering a bit from heat. From the outside, the shop doesn't look like much, but inside - wow. This small and neat shopped is like a fly fishing paradise. As I'm not a fly fisher and also not really knowledgeable about fishing, it was overwhelming. But cool to look around and see all the crazy things people use. Anyway, they had the sun shirt that I was looking for, and I found a nice hat. So overall, cool spot to visit, and great if you're into fly fishing. Parking is easy and they take credit cards too.

We stayed at Gordon's for three nights while visiting Lassen Volcanic National Park…read more The cabin was exactly what we needed after exploring the National park. We stayed in Cabin 4. It was outfitted with a Queen size bed, dining table, charcoal grill, oven and stove, refrigerator and some basic cooking utensils. There is also a small bathroom with a shower. The bed was comfortable and the entire cabin was clean. The shower was small, but the hot water was fantastic. This location is a short drive to several great locations including Lassen Volcanic National Park (15 minutes), Burney Falls State Park (30 minutes), and Subway Cave (5 minutes). There is a small store on the premises. We did not find it as well stocked as we had hoped. But there is Old Station Fill Up right up the road that has more variety. Or if you're looking to grocery shop, you can drive into Burney (30 minutes). We enjoyed that there wasn't any service on the property. It was nice to unplug. You could see inside the bathroom from the outside. The main door to get inside is easily opened without a key, which is not good at all. Also, the WiFi did not work during our time there. Not even in the areas we were told it would. Besides that, the area itself is nice. We enjoyed playing cornhole and badminton.
