I really like wanted to like this place. I have visited more than 10 times over the last 8 years. Staff is non existent, never asks if you need help and seems annoyed when you ask questions. Was looking g for a Deba and the woman there said "this is only for cutting fish heads!". Not sure why, but she seemed to be disgusted with me even though I know very well what a Deba is used for. Steer clear of this place if you need help or want to understand anything. Also steer clear if you just expect staff that want to sell goods. I have never experienced a situation in North America where the company was not interested in selling anything.... Poor situation. read more

Great selection of items to stock your restaurant or home kitchen. I came in prepared to shop for a a few sets of ramen bowls, chopsticks, and spoons and found a great variety to bring home and surprise my husband for Christmas. In addition when I went to the counter the salesman/owner let me know that there was a special and I just needed to pick out $10 more to get 20% of my kitchenware order. So I picked up a great plate. There is a large selection but a fairly small store, so be careful when maneuvering around aisles. And shout out to the great staff at the store! Because of my additional purchases I didn't bring enough bags, I asked if I can pay and pick up my items when a few hours later when I leave work and they were totally okay with it. Tempting, tempting store full of Japanese cookware and gadgets. I want everything I saw in there! Such beautifully made goods! We were looking for lidded donburi bowls and dipping bowls and MTC had the styles and decorations that pleased us - and at quite reasonable prices (we were even happier when we were told there was a 20% discount due to an after-Christmas sale!). They also have a large selection of Japanese knives as well as knife repair and sharpening. It looked like a lot of professional chefs frequent this shop as well - we noted a patron coming in with a large selection of knives for sharpening (which required a deep serious discussion with the MTC staff). FYI- if you're looking to get your Japanese knives sharpened, this place will only do it for you if you bought them here (or you're a restaurant). When asked, they recommended Henry Westpfal, but Korin is probably a better bet for Japanese knives specifically. The store has a good selection of most Japanese kitchenware; e.g. for sake cups, there are probably 8-10 different options ranging from ~$2-$9 each. Nothing terribly high-end or one-of-a-kind out of these. Knives are more unique (and accordingly more expensive). Service was polite but not proactive; no one offered help while I was browsing. This in addition to their sharpening policy (which excludes potential customers for knives and could've been easily excepted) definitely makes Korin my preferred store for Japanese kitchenware, knives, sharpening and customer service. read more

I recently wrote a review on their website about one of their tamagoyaki pans. It wasn't a great review, but rather than try to fix a problem with a customer, they decided to just remove the review off their website instead. The Tamagoyaki pan: (https://www.mtckitchen.com/copper-tamagoyaki-pan-medium-8-25-x-8-25/) The pan costed $80 and after one use, oil was really stuck onto it. Even after many attempts from using soap, baking soda, vinegar, and even cleansing/degreaser formulas like Barkeeper's friend, the pan is still very dirty and the non-stick film is probably heavily damaged by now. The MTC representative was respectful but ultimately the advice didn't help and now I'm down $80 for nothing. It's very upsetting because I used to make Tamagoyaki at an omakase sushi restaurant in NYC using iron pans, and I really wish I could give copper pans another try, but I think maybe it's best to go elsewhere instead. I would suggest people be very careful going here. There are a lot of instances when poorly-made products from Japan are labeled more expensive because they are "authentic". Unfortunately, the tamagoyaki pan I bought is definitely one of those. I wouldn't be surprised if other products were like that too. And if you post a non-perfect review, they will just remove it instead of fixing the problem. #customerservice! read more

The staff are super kind and resourceful. Went in to buy a sushi knife for my mom. Found the place online because I was searching for a specific knife. So happy I finally tracked it down. Got the last one. Thank the Lord! I was told that they have a warehouse in Jersey, which is super good to know. FYI: they have a nice selection of Japanese culinary equipment as well as a superior range of knives. Love this place. Seriously. I've got 2 knives purchased here (in addition to some other stuff) and have had them sharpened here several times, despite now living out of state. Trust me, it's worth it. I'm still working on my sharpening skills and I definitely have limits. These guys are experts. I recently worked with them to coordinate sharpening of my 2 Japanese knives and dropped them off last week on a Friday afternoon. I was happy to see that they are requiring masks, limiting the number of people in the store, and requiring hand sanitizer. My knives were sharpened to an incredible edge and mailed back to me in less than a week (I was asked to provide a package and label, easy peasy). I'd chipped the tip of one of them and you'd never know to look at it now. If you are in the market for new knives, need your knives sharpened, or are in the market for a variety of kitchen and dining essentials, definitely check them out. My family's a big fan of Korin downtown but one day, we were in the area and needed some last minute Japanese dishes for a dinner party. MTC Kitchen's prices are definitely more competitive than Korin's and their selection is pretty well curated. Service was pretty cold though, which makes me not really want to return. I'm guessing that these guys source so many restaurants that they don't really care about making individual customers happy. Also, since they typically take wholesale orders, their in-shop selection for immediate purchase is pretty sparse. We had a dinner party with 10 people and had to mismatch the style of dishes since the shop didn't have enough of each in stock. read more

If I were to compare MTC Kitchen (AKA Japanese Culinary Center) to Korin, I would say they are the opposite. Not in terms of their products, but in term of service style. Why do I say so? I would describe Korin as formal and professional. MTC would be intimate and friendly. Today is my first time here in MTC. It was empty besides the 2 people at the desk. The lady approached me with a very friendly greeting and smile. At once I felt comfortable. The knife collection may not be as large as Korins, but it is of quality. I purchased a takamura petty knife. The core of this knife is a high powder steel, clad with stainless steel on both sides. The lady left me with the knife and she went to find a cutting board with a carrot to let me test it. She also brought a gyuto over just so I can get a feel of how the full length knife is. When I purchased the petty knife, I also asked if they have a saya for this size knife. They said no, but she offered to give me a plastic knife guard as a compliment. I had to gracefully decline it since I won't be using it. But that generosity is just amazing! I will definitely be coming back here to feed my knife curiosity! I stumbled upon this store randomly, and I am so glad that I did! They offer a wide selection of ceramics - cookware, servingware, sake and tea - and cooking supplies, and a small selection of teas and food items. The ceramic designs are mostly minimal, with some traditional patterns. We bought an elevated plate with a small divot in the middle and we use it for potstickers and sauce. We also bought a few small bowls, and I had to resist buying a collection of tea cups. Most items are reasonably priced, with the full sake and tea sets being more expensive. Our big purchase was a gorgeous ceramic hot pot - I don't know what it is called is Japanese. It was $50 but absolutely worth it. I wish they sold more Lupicia tea flavors! read more

I exercised some restraint and bought two gorgeous plates... they were so reasonable, I couldn't resist, but they look like they are worth more than I paid for them. Because they are handmade, no two are exactly alike and there's beauty in that, it's called wabi sabi: the art of imperfection. The Japanese are so perfect, they even mastered imperfection. it's crazy. buy their plates! their knives are the best around, as well. if you don't want to invest in a giant overpriced stockpot, buy a nabe (here) instead, they do the same kind of thing, in a smaller vessel, for a fourth of the price. love this place. read more

I got some reusable saran wrap here. A pack of 2 round pieces for $16. In retrospect, I wish the pieces were bigger, because it is really when recipes call for things to be covered and chilled that I use saran wrap. But this could be used for leftovers. I don't remember how I heard of this place, but during the course of my wanderings around NYC doing my once-a-year shopping for my place in New Zealand, I decided to go a few blocks out of my way to pop in here. What a worthwhile expedition it turned out to be! This place has everything for the Japanese kitchen, much of which also has uses in a Western kitchen. The prices are reasonable (especially with the 15% discount that they offered me when they learned I'm in the business) and the service is very friendly and helpful. The range of ceramics is extensive, and they have a vast assortment of knives, from consumer-grade Shun and Global to the more esoteric and specialist (and expensive) Japanese brands. I highly recommend this store if you are a fan of minimalist aesthetic. You can find some really affordable tea ware here. Some places sell them for tea cups $6-20/each, but I managed to find two really pretty Celadon ones for about $3/each. They also sell a small selection of Lupicia teas. If I hadn't packed a small suitcase, I probably would have purchased much more to add to my tea cup collection. read more

So yes for those who want to cook with Japanese machinery, whether for the home or for a restaurant, this store imports the machinery. On the other hand, there are Japanese spices or sauces that one can find at a Japanese grocery can find here as well. There is a selection of Japanese glassware such as serving dishes, bowls, plates, tea pots/cups for sale as well. There is some stationary items. My wife and I have been shopping at Mtc Kitchen for several years now, to date we have bought several knives including a Takamura, Misono UX10, and 2 Sakai Takayuki knives which make great all purpose knives. The service is pretty personable and they generally are very professional as well so we don't have any complaints regarding that. However I just say I am currently pretty disappointed with the knive sharpening service, it's just inconsistent. I had one knife sharpened about 4 times now and the first time the sharpener has made several scratches in the blade the second time was absolutely perfect, the third time was alright but then this last time the blade looks burned with a rainbow like glare in the blade. For those who are new to knive sharpening, it's not usual at all to see that kind of burn coming from a wet stone. Along with that the piece of the bottom part of the blade was tipped/bent a little bit so that metal wasn't sharpened on an even angle from my understanding, not to mention that their price went up from $15 to $20 dollars. Pretty disappointing, as these knives are special for us and we would simply like the knives sharpened professionally and in a consistent manor. Moving forward, I think we will be going elsewhere for our sharpening needs. read more

I've been coming to this store when I had time and in the area. I collect ceramics, and this store never ceases to feed my collection. I had just picked up a set of glass dishes (ones that invoke ice, for summer time eating) and was pleased with the price and the choices. They have dishes that run from $3-$100 so you can find anything that fits what you are looking for. Also check out the 50% off section where you can get some real steals. This place is pretty amazing. Their knife selection is pretty insane. My sole purpose of coming here was to find the awesome ramen spoons with a divet on it so it can hang on the bowl which they had! Also bought some japanese chopsticks which are different from the chinese ones in that they have grippy tips to make it easier to grab stuff. Also got a donburi bowl which Im going to use as my ramen bowl. They also have sake glass sets, various dishes, japanese hot pots, japanese cook book. They cater more to wholesale distributers and those in the industry, but they are open to the public. Im sure if they dont have something they'll prolly work with you to get it. read more

Went here for a Japanese beer tasting (real japanese beer brewed in japan, not, the typical fake japanese beers). Really well done event, even though the space is more set up as a store than as an event space. The store itself seems to sell very high end Japanese cookware (if I cooked at all, I assume that the knives on the wall would've been some form of food porn), but the space seems to be used pretty frequently for japanese food-type events. Also, proximity to sakagura is good if you want to continue your japanese evening.. Note that the entry is on the side street, not on the avenue. read more

I have not had great success with their online business. I have not gone to the store. They charge quite a bit for shipping. Two pieces came in unacceptable condition. One piece was sent in the wrong size. Some pieces were not sent at all. No one picks up the phone. No one calls back.
