This place is a rip off. I wouldn't recommend anyone to come here, especially not for a wok. I see other reviewers getting their woks here for 10 bucks, we got ours for 40, and it's not even a good one. The wok sucks, is a hassle to take care of, and the staffs are dishonest. We came here to buy a wok. They introduced us the cast iron wok, 34cm (13.4 inches), for $40. Both the lady and the guy who works here were hard-selling the wok. The lady says this wok is out of stock, it's very popular, it doesn't rust, and it's very good for your health. The guy says the more you use it the better it gets. We bought it. We used it once and only to steam fa gao. It rusted right away. We took pictures of it and went back to tell them in hope for an exchange. When they were selling us the wok, the lady said nobody complaint. Perhaps she was telling the truth, Chinese people find it a hassle to go back and complain. But now I did so she can't say that anymore otherwise she would be lying. Also, before we bought it, I asked if we can refund or exchange if it's not good. The lady says no refund but we can exchange for something else. Hence, we went back for an exchange. Both of the staffs were there. The guy says we can only exchange if we didn't use it. Dude, how do we know it's bad if we didn't use it? Why would we buy it, not use it, and exchange it? That makes no sense at all! Might as well say no exchange from the beginning. The guy says that because we used it, he cannot resell it, that's why they can't allow an exchange. Nonsense! It is not my fault you can't resell it. And we didn't really use it, we tried it. We didn't even cook with it. I've worked in a retail before, if a customer wants to return an item because it is bad, we give them back their money. If we cannot resell the item because it is bad, we dispose it right away. Don't force your customers to keep a bad item they bought from you! Give them their money back and you deal with the item, the customer shouldn't have to! This kind of business mindset that they possess is unfair, selfish, and very stupid. In addition, this time when we went back she says cast iron will rust. We were looking for one that doesn't rust so before we bought it we asked her and she promised it won't rust. This time she's telling us something different. She also made it sound like it's our fault, as if we didn't know how to use the wok that's why it rust. My mom's been using woks her whole life. If the wok is good it shouldn't give people so much trouble. It's also heavy to maneuver, and the lid is bad too. I'm pretty sure this wok will crack after a few uses, even though I deliberately asked before purchase and they promise it won't. I will update with a picture if it does. But I hope it won't because this will be a complete waste of money! We bought it because it's almost Chinese New Year, and we need one. read more

Yes, It's me...reviewing a Chinatown business, AGAIN. This time I found a sure thing in Hung Chong Imports. It has practically everything you're looking for in Asian kitchen supplies. The staff is quite helpful and friendly as well. I wanted to replace a 14" stainless steel wok. After using it for over 6 weeks, it truly sucks. The reason is because I have an electric stove. Even though my burner is always piping hot and having the use of a wok ring, the stainless steel WILL NOT effectively retain heat for functional stir frying. At first, it's good but once more than a bowl's worth of food goes in, the temperature plummets like the credibility of Slash during the half-time show at Super Bowl. After explaining my situation to the staff and not wanting a true cast iron wok (much too big for my stove), they recommended a 16" carbon steel flat bottom for $17.50. It was hard to turn down at that price and I also picked up 12" steel tongs. I was in a hurry so I didn't really have time to actually "shop" here. If I didn't have a 2 hour drive back home, I could've spent at least 40 mins. here assessing my hardware; what I needed and so forth. They do NOT take the plastic but anyone who knows Chinatown should not be startled by this fact. 8 of 10 businesses here take cash only. Hung Chong is now on my list of frequent stops. I was looking for a specific Chinese cooking utensil, and I stumbled across this place in my travels. The staff was unusually polite and helpful. This is (according to my shopping bag) a wholesale distributor and resale store with a complete line of kitchen utensils. Google tells me that what I was looking for was a spider skimmer. I didn't know its name then, but I found it and I bought it, and I love it. I even love the sticker that was on the handle that said "Double Happiness Brand". Google also tells me that this thing runs about $7 online without shipping... I got mine here for $1.95. 5 stars. read more

BEWARE!!! The people working here are scam artists. Bought a Myland ceramic pot here that was marked $30. Walked down a few blocks to the Hong Kong Supermarket for groceries, unbeknownst saw the same EXACT pot for $9.99. Furious at the $20 price difference, I walked back over to this place to get a refund. After arguing and going back and forth to no avail; with petty excuses like the boss is unreachable, I had no choice but to take the pot since I needed it. With this place being a wholesale distributor you would think the prices would reflect and be fair, not $20 more than a local supermarket. I will never come back here for kitchenware again. I learned my lesson and I hope you would adhere to my warning too. BAD POLICIES, BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE, HORRIBLE PRICES. Love this place. It seems like many restaurant owners come here for industrial grade cooking tools, but it's also very consumer-friendly. Pots, pans, woks, knives, steaming/dim sum tools... you name it, they sell it. The people are also nice, though I have reservations about most of the staff's ability to hold a conversation in English. If you're looking for a tea set for yourself or as a gift, they sell a porcelain set that's buy-one-get-one-free for under $20. Can't beat that! read more

Prices are on par with all the other restaurant supplies places in Chinatown. If you are buying a lot and pay with cash, they will give you a discount (we got 10%). Quality of their stuff varies - the stainless carbon steel wok and pot are well made and sturdy, but the wooden bamboo chopping boards are rubbish. We bought a brand new one, went home and washed it before use, and the thing warped and cracked in half on both sides. It's now been donated to be a stage prop for a theatre production since it is useless for anything else and can't be salvaged or repaired. Rated 2 stars because of the terrible customer service - even with a receipt and showing them the damaged product, they will refuse to give replacement or refund, and will also claim that they can't do anything because the "boss" is elsewhere and not contactable at all. Given the number of other places around with comparable prices, you're better off saving yourself a headache in the event anything goes wrong and spend your money elsewhere. read more

Got a great 16" carbon-steel wok here for only $10. Metal handle (honestly a better idea long term; my dad's wooden handle is a burnt-out husk of wood right now from all the time he's used it.) They have a great supply of other kitchenwares. If you are looking to load up your kitchen Asian style these guys will hook you up. They have tons of restaurant-grade equipment - pots, pans, knives, etc. - but they are open to the public. I did see one other market with rambutans before I left Chinatown, but I stopped at Hung Chong first and have no complaints. So I think that the inside of Hong Chong may be kitchen supply, but I didn't go inside...I was all about the food stall on the sidewalk (which was pressed against the window and didn't appear to be independently operated). If you need kitchen/dining supplies, this is *the* place to go first. The workers know their store in and out and can help you find what you're looking for, even if you have just a vague notion of what to get. And don't worry, they speak English well! I was in and out of the store in less than 5 minutes, with a $10 carbon steel 16" wok and wok-ring in hand. It's top quality and seasoned extremely nicely - another bonus at this store was, the cashier will give you a paper on how to season and care for your new wok, the traditional Chinese way (written in English). This store has been around for years; I remember passing it by as a child yet this is the first time I went inside...and I don't know why I haven't gone sooner. read more

This is a great store if you're looking for inexpensive, good quality cookware and dinnerware. Although their assortment of woks has dwindled down to four varieties, you can still find hand made, 16" thin iron woks for around $16. Stiff brushes, spoons, strainers, bamboo steamers, scissors, heavy duty carbon, and iron meat cleavers, non sticks, the list goes on. This is a great place to buy all your kitchen gear and gadgets. The staff was very helpful and polite. I have been looking for a large, well made, pressure cooker for my family of 4 for over a year now. The big box stores just don't make them as sturdy as they used to. Now days they are thin walled with inadequate seals. Which is extremely dangerous. I am so happy I stumbled upon the Hung Chong Imports. Do not shop here if you don't like be fooled! I was looking for a cast iron/stainless steel wok when I walked in this store. Since I was concerned about the carcinogens in Teflon, I was determined to get a wok without any coating on it. I saw a wok with the size and shape I wanted. But it was a non-stick wok, so I hesitated for fear of the coating. A sales person walked over. He promised that there was no coating on the wok and I should buy it. Since I considered him to be the expert, I trusted what he said and accepted his recommendation. After I got home, I read the product description. It was very clear there was a non-stick coating inside of the wok. I felt being tricked. I braved the cold and went back to the store the day after my purchase, hoping they would give back my money since what the salesperson told me was inconsistent with the reality. (a.k.a., he was lying). Not only the store did not give back my money, they were also very rude. Now I understand why they want everybody to pay cash - once they've got your cash, they can screw you. They issued me store credit, which I considered to be worthless. After this time, I do not think I would go back to that store ever again. BUYER BEWARE!!!! If you return it, unused in pristine condition they will change you a 20% fee. I guess it's a restocking fee but my item was clearly 15 feet from the check out counter so how you can justify that is? Rude, no .... just persistent on penalizing you by taking 20% from your purchase price. I would rather keep it and make do, give it away or throw it away before giving them the fee. They will not budge from the 20%. First and last time I will be shopping there. They may think they have the market cornered but there are always better if you care to look. I would gladly pay a bit more @ another shop. They obviously don't care whether you come back or not. Is this policy posted? Yes, it is, so shame on me that the sign is on a 8x11 sheet of paper written in Chinese and English. If you ever have a problem with anything you buy here don't bother trying to get any satisfaction from them. Bought a "stainless steel" cleaver. The firest time I used it on small pork bones, on a wooden chopping block, it chipped and every successive chop the blade bent. Brought it back and told them I just wanted a discount off of a better cleaver and all they said was that they don't guarantee any of the products they sell. So there was no language I brough a chinese speaking colleague who has been a long-time patron of the store was also throughly frustrated with their attitude. read more

This is the worst store ever!!! I spent $50 for a chopping board on 12/02. After opening the plastic wrap/packaging, the board had a very strong chemical odor. I washed the board with dish detergent several times for two days and left it air dried, but the odor wouldn't go away. I was very concerned about the material of the board that's causing such a smell, so this afternoon I went to the store and asked for refund. The store staff told me that they wouldn't accept refund, but they could do exchange. Immediately after I agreed to exchange, the store staff said they needed to check with their manager. The manager refused to exchange for full $50 and said they would deduct $10 for opening up the packaging of the board. I disputed that it's impossible to discover that the board had such odor unless the packaging was opened. In addition, the packaging was just a plastic wrap, not even in boxes. After some disputes, I made a comprise for the store and agreed that the store could deduct $5, but the store manager insisted on deducting $10 for the packaging. As a Chinese, I would like to support Chinese businesses. Unfortunately, Hung Chong Imports really disappoints me. The store is selling such a problem merchandise, and they not only refuse to refund the customer they even deduct $$ for a plastic wrap packaging. This clearly demonstrates the ethics of this store. I have to at least give one star to post my comments here. If there is a negative rating system, this store surely will receive a very "high" rating from me. read more

it is a really nice kitchenware shop with everything you need. the staff are super nice and helpful. i wished i knew about it sooner, foudn it on yelp so it all worked out. i got a nice steel dumpling steamer. price is decent and good quality. i didn't want to buy something like that online and just wanted to get it from a real asian place. i heard that bamboo steamers get old and worn out soon. read more
